FireEye CEO Kevin Mandia is logging off from his Woodside, CA, mansion, which is now listed for $17.9 million.
The property has been the market for just over a week, but its prodigious price tag didn’t slow buyers on the hunt for an upscale home in Silicon Valley. The mansion is already in pending sale status.
Woodside is one of the wealthiest communities in the country, and its 48 active listings come with an eye-popping median home price of $3,795,000.
Mandia purchased the contemporary compound in 2014 for $16 million. He joined FireEye in December 2013, as the the cybersecurity company’s senior vice president and chief operating officer, and became its CEO in 2016.
The San Francisco Bay Area-based firm currently has a market cap of $2.5 billion, but its share price has gone down 70% in the past five years.
Located in desirable central Woodside at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, the home is within easy walking distance of town and the Woodside School.

Golf In Costa Rica Is ‘Pura Vida’
He saw me before I saw him. But then he had the edge — I was on his home turf, playing golf in Costa Rica. The biggest iguana I have ever seen sat motionless 25 yards to my left while I stood on the tee of the par-5 closing hole at Reserva Conchal Beach Resort, Golf & Spa.
If only I had mimicked the focus he exhibited while staring at me, my drive might have found the fairway. And that would have led to a better second. And maybe my approach would have landed on the green, rather than in a pond fronting the green (a shot that’s more uphill than you think). And then my scorecard might not have ended with a bogey.
Fortunately, by then I had embraced the country’s informal national motto : “Pura Vida,” or pure life. It’s only golf, after all.
The hole was a challenging ending to an enjoyable course in a country I knew little about prior to a trip there last year. I heard (but never actually saw) the famous howler monkeys singing their song from trees around the property, drank a new favorite beer (a lager called Imperial), fished in the Pacific thanks to Yellowfin Charters, rode a horse through the countryside and tasted the best fried chicken of my life. But more about that later. First, the golf.
Reserva Conchal has the only Robert Trent Jones II design in Central America, and it’s good enough to have hosted the PGA Tour Latinoamerica Costa Rica Classic the past two years. The inaugural tournament in 2017 — the country’s first PGA TOUR event in more than 30 years — was won by Jose Toledo of Guatemala, while Florida native Tyson Alexander eagled the fifth playoff hole to capture the title this past May.
Set on Costa Rica’s northwest coast in the Guanacaste Region, Reserva Conchal is an hour’s ride from the airport in Liberia (the country’s main airport, in the capital city of San Jose, is approximately five hours to the southeast). A variety of accommodations, ranging from villas, condos and vacation residences to the all-inclusive Westin Golf Resort & Spa Playa Conchal, are available. The latter comes with numerous themed restaurants (the Italian offerings at Faisanella were my favorite), multiple pools, fitness center, spa and beachfront access. Construction is also currently underway for a new W Costa Rica hotel expected to open late this year with 151 rooms and suites in multiple buildings.
Don’t be surprised to hear American accents down there either; the country is a favorite destination for retirees from the U.S. Approximately the size of West Virginia with a population of five million, Costa Rica has the highest literacy rate in Latin America. There’s no daylight savings time, the average temperature on the coast is 80 degrees and the Costa Rican colon (named after Christopher Columbus, who discovered Costa Rica in 1502) offers a good exchange rate.
Soccer remains the favorite sport in the country (the national team, which reached the World Cup quarterfinals in 2014, failed to advance out of their bracket in 2018) but the course at Reserva Conchal, built in 1996, goes a long way to making golf more visible.
“At that time there were no resorts in Costa Rica,” said Robert Trent Jones II, chairman and master architect at his namesake company. “It was known as an eco-tourism place, one of the first actually. It’s very peaceful, has no army, and a lovely climate. There’s fishing, golf, and friendly people.”
The layout he and his team created exhibits just the right degree of fun and challenge.
“One of the things I like most about the course is that it has a nice rhythm to it,” said Bruce Charlton, president and chief design officer for Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects. “They gave us a very nice canvas to create the best golf holes. We were able to route the course in the way we wanted to.”
A room at Roble Sabana
Unlike his father whose motto was easy bogeys and hard pars, Trent Jones II employs a different philosophy. “We’ve always used a ‘listen to the land’ golf architecture approach,” said Charlton, who noted the company’s design team first roamed the property on horseback. “That means listening to our clients and understanding who will be coming to play the course. You’re on vacation, so why not have some fun?”
Carlos Rojas Soto has been watching guests do just that since taking the job as director of golf at Reserva Conchal in 2007. His favorite hole is the fourth, a 592-yard par-5 that climbs uphill to a green that offers Pacific Ocean views. But it’s not the hardest, especially for the pros.
“That would be the second, a 442-yard par-4,” said Rojas Soto. “The landing area is very narrow with hazards on both sides of the fairway, and the green is protected by a Guanacaste Tree and two deep send traps.”
I’d be happy enough just playing the five par 3s myself, especially the trio on the back nine, which is topped off by the 210-yard 17th requiring a carry over water to a wide but somewhat shallow and well-bunkered green. Speaking of the Bermuda Tifdwarf greens, take careful note of where you are in relation in to the Pacific Ocean to read those properly.
Reserva Conchal was the first course in Costa Rica bestowed certification by Audubon International. In fact, Charlton returned in recent years to focus on water conservation concepts by reducing turf and helping enhance the irrigation system. Various bunkers throughout the course have also been worked on as well.
As for that fried chicken? First my group of travelers took a quick shuttle to a nearby ranch where Casagua Horse Tours, run by an ex-pat American from Michigan, provides horseback rides. After moving slowly and carefully through the countryside and into a local village, we dismounted at a no-frills, town hall-type building without a hint of any restaurant.
A promise of delicious fried chicken sent quizzical looks throughout our group. Here, we wondered? No way. While we waited, a cold Imperial beer hit the spot. Then paper plates full of the promised meal were placed on the wooden picnic tables. One bite was enough to know this was a promise fulfilled, even in the most unlikely of places.
There were smiles all around, and still more golf to come at Reserva Conchal. Pura Vida indeed!

Carmody Groarke unveils plans to build transparent "shield" around Mackintosh's Hill House
Carmody Groarke has unveiled plans to erect a see-through hood over Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland, to help protect it from the elements during conservation works.
Mackintosh, a key figure in Britain's Arts and Crafts movement, designed and built Hill House as a home for the publisher Walter Blackie between 1902 and 1904.
Located around 40 kilometres outside Glasgow in the coastal town of Helensburgh, the house has been subjected to decades of exposure and its striking Portland cement render has suffered moisture damage.
The house was left in the care of the National Trust for Scotland in the 1980s and the preservation organisation is now undertaking work to restore the building that is described stylistically as a mixture of "Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Scottish Baronial and Japonisme".
London architects Carmody Groarke have been brought on board to create a weather-proof envelope to protect Hill House during these restoration works.
"The National Trust of Scotland is adopting a very bold approach to the conservation of the Hill House; one that is radical and experimentative in seeking new methods to extend the lifespan of our heritage, and one that invites public interaction and interpretation of these processes," said architect Andy Groarke, who described the restoration project as pioneering.
The transparency of Carmody Groarke's enclosure will mean the house remains on view and open throughout the restoration process. Stairs and gangways inside the see-through skin will permit visitors close-up views of the exterior of the house, and to watch the restoration work progress.
Dutch studio Oving Architecten employed a similar design to help protect the former home of an SS commander at the Nazi concentration camp Westerbork against the elements, preserving it as a memorial to the holocaust.
"We are building what amounts to a shield around and above the Hill House to keep wind and rain out and give the building a chance to dry," explained Simon Skinner, chief executive at National Trust for Scotland.
"The new structure is effectively a porous cage, albeit a beautifully designed one, that still allows some movement of air and a degree of moisture penetration."
The house also includes interiors – from furniture to textiles and artworks – designed by the architect and the artist Margaret Macdonald, Mackintosh's wife.
Mackintosh is perhaps best known for his Glasgow School of Art building, which – like Hill House – was commissioned as a complete design and features interiors by the architect. The building is also undergoing restoration works after a fire ravaged the building in 2014.
"Charles Rennie Mackintosh was in the vanguard of using the materials and creating the kinds of buildings that became the vernacular in the 20th century," said the trust's general manager Richard Williams.
"As the 21st century progresses, more effort is being made around the globe to preserve important structures from the preceding century and the lessons we learn can be applied by others."
National Trust for Scotland will be launching a fundraising drive in 2018 to help finance the restoration works, which will cost millions of pounds. A significant donation from the Getty Conservation Institute has already been secured.
Carmody Groake, which was founded by architects Kevin Carmody and Andy Groarke in 2006, is also currently working on plans for an art gallery and a suite of studios at the brutalist Park Hill estate in Sheffield, England, and a skyscraper in London's Paddington.

Hyperallergic: Can Social Tagging Deepen the Museum Experience?
Social-tagging results in a museum visit (photo by the author for Hyperallergic)
Established art museums aren’t really known for responsiveness to the individual wants of visitors. Theoretically, the best art exhibitions respond to the emotional and conceptual requirements of their time, rather than to individual tastes. In practice, it is beholden to the Patron (the elite group of funders who underwrite museums) and not the patron (your everyday ticket-holding museum-goer). To understand how and why museums make decisions, it’s often most useful, as the evergreen adage goes, to follow the money. Instagram and Tumblr have filled in some of these gaps, while the rise of a “Spotify for art lovers” streams visual art by theme. Now, an initiative from SFMOMA has art lovers texting instead of scrolling. Since June, a text message to the museum phrased “Send me _____” returns a work from its permanent collection related to nearly any word — or even emoji. “Send Me SFMOMA” has received 4.3 million text messages.
This initiative may seem like a one-off bid for visitor attention, but it actually comes out of a decade of art museum technology and research. If art museums were machines, we’d say their user interface has improved greatly over the last ten years. As it turns out, we have Steve to thank — and not that Steve.
An interaction with “Send me SFMOMA” (photo by the author for Hyperallergic)
In 2004, an information architect named Thomas Vander Wal coined the term “folksonomy” to describe language that originates from the masses up. He and other information architects were observing this process on the internet through social tagging — users generating and pairing keywords to images to make them easier to find later. A folksonomy behaves like a taxonomy in that it is meant to assign meaning to things by classifying them. But while a taxonomy strives for scientific accuracy, a folksonomy is by nature imperfect. The internet has democratized cultural sectors whose vocabulary was defined by a small elite; the art museum community, inspired by Vander Wal, is one of them.
Susan Chun was on staff at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City when she read about Vander Wal’s work. At the time, the museum was aware that many people visiting its digital archives were struggling to find what they were looking for. It was a classic case of jargon vs. conventional language, Chun said. If the Met could just find a way to get the public to catalogue the archives themselves, then they would know that the system was user-friendly.
“Honestly, until tagging came along museums had so little access to how visitors understood works of art,” Chun says. Academically inclined by nature and training, staffers were insulated from the “glory, confusion, [and] distaste of the visitor.” In 2005, Chun banded with other like-minded museum professionals to found Steve: The Museum Social Tagging Project. Funded by grants from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, they eventually developed an open-source software to make tagging easy for any museums who wished to participate.
Take this painting, for example:
Winslow Homer, “The Gulf Stream” (1899), Oil on canvas 28 1/8 x 49 1/8 inches (photo by David Torcivia via Flickr)
Winslow Homer painted “The Gulf Stream” in 1899; it hangs in the Met. The team conducting The Steve Project was surprised when multiple people tagged the shark-laden painting with the word “dolphins.” Chun was fascinated by the “imperfect image” — the passing impression that a visitor gets of a painting. “The real goal is to bring people to works of art, however misremembered,” she says. Vander Wal explains that tagging is a means of retrieval. The way we store things to come back to them later is subjective. Often these associations are shared by others — hence why social tagging works. But museum professionals eventually arrived at the conclusion there is no point in using people to tag works for elements that computers can detect, like color. It is better to have people describe things computers can’t detect, like how does the piece make them feel?
By 2014, when I first visited the topic of social tagging, it was a buzzword out of vogue, and trying to motivate people to tag was just plain difficult, unless they were already art enthusiasts. The Brooklyn Museum turned tagging into a game called “Tag! You’re It” and another game called “Freeze Tag” to remove inaccurate or  inappropriate tags. Both games were discontinued due to low participation rates.
Museum studies scholar Ross Parry argues that the idea of a technological museum isn’t newsworthy. He says we are in a “postdigital” museum environment, in which museums will be judged not based on whether they have an app but on how well “digital thinking” is applied to all levels of the organization. We now visit museums to see works that are already available online. What happens when virtual reality can recreate the artwork in our home?
Sebastian Chan, formerly director of Digital & Emerging Technologies at Cooper Hewitt,  now works at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). It’s a question ACMI has already grappled with, as all of the films in their collection can be viewed in a visitor’s living room. Currently, the most important job of the museum is to provide critical context. While machines tag films frame by frame, the curators interrogate bias and find references between directors that a machine would miss. We’re “tagging the museum’s stuff as well as tagging the world,” says Chan. “The museum is now much bigger than what you see when you walk in the door,” because of the wealth of information that lives online. He compares it to the TARDIS, from Doctor Who: police telephone box on the outside, expansive spacecraft on the inside. The postdigital museum allows visitors to extract more data from the collection (and the collection to extract data from the visitors.)
The Steve project ignited a “radical shift toward how visitors saw things,” Chan says. Chan was part of the team that launched the Pen at Cooper Hewitt, the Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. Now, every visitor to the converted Upper East Side mansion is offered a rubber-tipped stylus the length of a toothbrush. By pressing the Pen to object labels, visitors can save the object to their personal collection, available online via the code on their museum ticket. (In the first 75 days of the Pen, it was used by 93% of visitors.) Cooper Hewitt offers info about the objects one engaged with — their colors, country of origin, and yes, their tags.
Folksonomy is far from a dead language. Social tagging proved a critical stepping stone for museums striving for Parry’s postdigital state. What was losing relevance in 2014, has shown by 2017 to be the germ of art museum democratization — whether through physical interventions like the Pen, or new iterations of the tagging system.
“We had experimented with Steve as a product suite and an idea, but we found that the ‘folksonomy’ didn’t provide the sort of connectivity and richness that you get from having a few dedicated staff [tagging],” says Keir Winesmith, Head of Web and Digital platforms at SFMOMA. The museum has been tagging its digital collection for internal purposes for nearly a decade, but a project as personal as the one just launched “wasn’t on the radar,” says Winesmith. The museum can only display 5% of its collection at a time, so “Send Me SFMOMA” was really more about “bringing to light the work in the collection that was largely hidden” than crowdsourcing a list of terms. However, Winesmith says they couldn’t have done it without the tags: “it would have been a non-starter.”
Of course, the museum is learning from the gaps between user desire and deliverability — and not just NSFW asks trying to trip the program up. 75% of the texts get a match. Subjective words, like beauty, have been hard to match —  as were emojis, initially. “We ran this pilot for four days in May and the first thing we learned was really we’re not very good at emojis and most of them didn’t match anything,” says Winesmith. “We actually gathered together a whole bunch of people that know more about emojis than I do and we kind of had an emoji workshop and they explained what all the hidden meanings were.” The museum now has 450 emojis in their system. About two thirds of users are sending words, and a third are using emojis.
Susan Chun can’t get away from tagging. Timed with the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, she implemented a program called Coyote at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago where she is currently Chief Content Officer. The museum staff committed to creating rich descriptions of every image on their website, as if they were describing them to a visually impaired friend. Chun was delighted to discover that the museum had some closet poets, but even moreso that visually impaired visitors weren’t the only ones to benefit. She calls Coyote a “powerful tool for people of all sorts who feel a little alienated in an art museum.” Language as emotional engagement and catharsis. As with Steve, Coyote is an open source tool.
The Brooklyn Museum, meanwhile, has shifted from the needs of the digital to the physical visitor. Sara Devine, the Manager of Audience Engagement & Interpretive Materials, is clear about this distinction. The biggest desire of museum visitors was to ask staff questions about what they were seeing, says Devine, so the museum launched the Ask app to allow them to do just that. There is no take-home component of the app, and users are anonymous. But while visitors can’t log in from home and continue to engage with the collection, their questions become a part of the museum’s metadata that informs how they organize the exhibits.
Economic restraints push museums to continuously re-evaluate their purpose, says Chan. “The business model of the museum has to include the public as well; technology is a means to deliver public value.” He echoes a thought he expressed when evaluating the initial success of Cooper Hewitt’s pen. “The Pen can only be seen as successful in so far as it enables the museum and its visitors to do more with our collection.” Even a physical intervention into the visitor experience ends with metadata about word association.
“There’s oftentimes language that is a barrier to people’s engagement with work,” says Winesmith. “That’s why [Send Me] is so ‘dumb.’. We didn’t want an expert way of using it, there’s just one way of using it.” The museum is in talks with half a dozen other museums around the world to adapt the program to their collections, including The Tate and the Auckland Art Gallery.
Writing for The Atlantic in 2015, amid buzz about the internet of things, Robinson Meyer deftly characterized Cooper Hewitt’s collection as things of the internet. The key to interpreting these objects or artworks lies not in the five senses, but in language. In this way, the pen is not mightier than the word. They need each other.

Inside Shanghai Tower: China’s tallest skyscraper claimed responsibility for world’s greenest
The Shanghai Tower is another in a long listing of ambitious skyscrapers competing ferociously for sustainability credentials as well as height. But how green are these builds and is environmentalism actually the motivation?
Twisting high above Shanghais financial district, Chinas tallest tower and the second tallest in the world is preparing to officially open its substantial doorways to the public next month. The Shanghai Tower, reaching 632 metres, is the third supertall tower on the citys iconic skyline. Looking out from the 119 th floor, the city lies below like a plaything model, a densely packed mass of streets and high-rise buildings.
China loves a world record, and its new build boastings plenty, including the worlds fastest elevators, highest hotel and eatery, and tallest viewing platform. Reassuringly, it also required the largest ever cement pouring for the foundations. But most importantly, the 128 -storey tower also claims to be the worlds greenest skyscraper. Awarded the top green rating, LEED Platinum, the government is hailing the tower as a sign of Chinas growing green credentials.
Chinas sustainability record in the past has been abysmal. The country burns 47% of the worlds coal, according to the US Energy Information Administration, and is facing the impact of decades of rapid deforestation and water pollution. With some of the most polluted air on countries around the world, killing as many as 4,000 people a day, an increasingly restive population is demanding more government action.
Nervous of the impact that smog-filled days and clogged roads could have on social stability, the government has begun tree planting programmes, ordered thousands of cars off the roads in cities such as Beijing, and is investing in green technology in a big route. China is now the biggest renewables marketplace in the world, more than double than in the US, and home to nearly one of every 3 wind turbines globally.
Green builds, however, make up a woefully small the members of the green industry, with most work focused on quick building and quicker sales. Calculates put the number of green builds on the two sides of the strait at less than 1 %, though a 2014 target by the State Council wants 30% of new construction projects to be green by 2020.

In Shanghai, technologist Shunfu Cha points to 200 wind turbines spinning at the top of the tower the worlds tallest turbines, naturally which generate around 10% of the buildings electricity. These are one of the most obvious green technologies, he says, gesturing upwards into the clouds. But merely one part of bringing down the energy use.
The build collects rainwater and re-uses waste water, has a combined cooling and heating power system and uses 40 other energy-saving measures that developers claim cut 34,000 metric tonnes from its annual carbon footprint. The build is wrap in two layers of glass for natural cooling and ventilation, and in total developers say a third of the site is green space, including 24 sky gardens sitting between the two skins.
At the moment, everyone is trying to achieve top green certification criteria, says Xiaomei Lee, managing director of Gensler Shanghai, the buildings architect. But nobody yet has achieved LEED Platinum for a supertall build. People assumed that a build of this sizing cant achieve such a high sustainability rating.
Shanghai Tower might be the only supertall tower to achieve LEED Platinum, but it is part of an increasing motion for towers to marketplace green credentials as the demand for more sustainable urban development is felt.
The worlds first Passivhaus-certified office tower a certification rating that considers ongoing annual energy use, considered more stringent than other energy codes was opened in Vienna two years ago, use 80% less heating and cooling energy than an equivalent tower through efficient power systems. Londons tallest build, the Shard, also has a raft of sustainability features which enable it to use 30% less energy than a conventionally designed skyscraper of the same height. Globally, 75 skyscrapers are LEED rated.

More builds are also turning green, literally. The Two World Trade Center development in New York has been designed to include a series of green terraces featuring different biozones. And in Milan, the Bosco Verticale is a pair of residential towers with 800 trees and thousands of plants on concrete balconies, maintained with recycled water. In Tel Aviv, plans for the Gran Mediterraneo towerinclude farms, horizontal gardens and a range of fauna.
Proponent say that far from their reputation as polluters, skyscrapers offer environmental benefits. Per capita, skyscrapers use less energy and water, make less trash and provide for a more engaged living experience, says Mahesh Ramanujam, chief operating officer at the US Green Building Council. When properly developed, they also preserve and protect precious green space in urban markets.
But the concept of green skyscrapers itself is controversial. Houses are the largest contributor to climate change through carbon emissions, and critics point out that logically, taller towers will need more resources both to runnings and to construct. So are we just seeing the latest version of greenwashing?
Environmental concerns include the fact that clusters of towers can stimulate the streets below darknes, trapping hot air and pollution at ground level. There is a knock-on impact in terms of carbon emissions, blocking illumination to surrounding properties, forcing the need for more electric lighting and eradicating the possibility of solar energy.
Tall towers also face charges of elitism. News that London has 260 new skyscrapers in the pipeline met with bitter oppositionfrom campaigners earlier this year, largely on the grounds that these towers will mostly offer luxury apartments that do little to help problems of affordable housing.
In 2014, two Russian free climbers reached the top of the Shanghai Tower in merely two hours.
And fund is surely to be made in green development. Investors and companies are increasingly looking to benefit from cost efficiencies, with maintenance bills around 20% less than typical commercial builds. While they cost more to build, the USGBC calculates most green projects pay for themselves in around seven years, especially as property agents say rents in LEED-certified builds can be up to 30% higher.
The UN expects two-thirds of the world to live in cities by 2050 the Chinese governments target is 60% by 2020 presenting challenges over how to provide sustainable builds in space-starved cities. Research has suggested that high-rise builds are the most sustainable form of urban development. A 2013 report by Terrapin Bright Green , commissioned by the New York government, recommended knocking down Manhattan towers that were too inefficient and replacing them with all the more important skyscrapers. Modern replacings could be 44% larger and still use 5% less energy, the study claimed.
While Terrapin acknowledged that demolishing and rebuilding wouldnt be appropriate or affordable in every suit, they found that even where builds were knocked down and replaced, the energy needed to dismantle the existing build and construct a new one would still be offset within 15 and 28 years.
Some people have opposed taller builds on the premise that they use more energy, but they have failed to consider the larger spillover effects of urban sustainability that come from a dense urban cloth, claims Sarene Marshall, executive director for the Center for Sustainability at the Urban Land Institute. While builds are the largest contributor to climate change through carbon emissions, transportation is a very close second. When you have a denser urban population, people are more likely to walk, bike or employ public transportation to get to work. So if you build taller builds, you have a denser urban fabric.
A 2013 report suggested knocking down inefficient skyscrapers in Manhattan and replacing them with taller ones. Photograph: Timothy A Clary/ AFP/ Getty Images
If you build lower builds and spread them out over a longer distance, what often happens is a much higher footprint in vehicle transportation.
A study by the New Climate Economy backs this up. Comparing the cities of Barcelona and Atlanta, with similar populations, Atlanta was found to have a much larger carbon footprint because people used automobiles to get around a large, sprawling urban area. The thinktank concluded that taller, denser builds can dramatically reduce a citys carbon impact.
However, green credentials and promises dont always stack up. Critics say that LEED criteria focuses too much on the development of the building, and not enough on how it is used afterwards. A New Republic report claimed that The Bank of America tower in New York, hailed as the worlds most environmentally responsible office build when it opened in 2010, actually renders more greenhouse gases and uses more energy per square foot than any comparably sized office building in Manhattan. In relying too much on LEED ratings, critics argue, developers and governments can get additional advertising without inevitably being energy efficient in the long run.
In many US countries, there are also tax breaks for energy-efficient builds, leading to claims that building designers target the easiest and cheapest green phases in order to qualify as LEED rated and gain tax exemptions.
And there are cases where the new technology disillusions. In London, the Strata Tower in Elephant and Castle, gratified criticism by residents when it opened as its in-built wind turbines designed for helping hot and cool the building properly werent turning. I feel like Im in an eco experimentation that has gone wrong at the design stage, one resident said. The promised new public garden at the Walkie Talkie tower in London also attracted criticism for being neither particularly green nor public enough.
For advocates of high-rise builds, horizontal development seems to be the future, and they remain convinced that green skyscrapers like the Shanghai Tower are the only sustainable way to do it. Sceptics will be watching closely for evidence that their optimism is not unfounded.

Definition of Cloud Computing
Is it realistic currently to run within the cloud all applications required by a business? Most cloud computing suppliers use of cloud computing elements throughout a hybrid combination of public and private cloud to lure customers in 2014.
Apart from the discussion on the management, control, governance and also the system among the cloud, massive firms like IBM, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Oracle et al. address a variety of problems just like the value of long operation, security, integration with different business applications and implications for the technical style and long information.
As we tend to area unit at dawn of the twelvemonth, we've got rounded up some high cloud computing news of the year 2014.
 Increased adoption of the cloud
As cloud technologies mature, additional organizations area unit deploying cloud services to chop IT costs and optimize operations. Public cloud services outlay was at $56.6 billion in 2014 and likely to grow $127 billion in 2018, consistent with IDC.
AWS features a larger partner system of SaaS applications, optimisation services and plug-ins that area unit designed to run seamlessly on AWS’s cloud. Microsoft remains building and increasing its Azure cloud platform and with SaaS applications in addition, its vision is world and it's sharply increasing into multiple international markets.
