The Benefits of Shopping at Chinese Meat Markets in Calgary
Tumblr media
In general, meat markets can offer a wide range of meat products that are often fresh and reasonably priced. Chinese meat markets, in particular, may offer a variety of cuts and types of meat that are not commonly found in mainstream grocery stores. Additionally, some people enjoy the cultural experience of shopping at these markets and the opportunity to try new types of cuisine.
However, it is important to note that some meat markets, including Chinese meat markets, have been associated with food safety issues. The handling and preparation of meat in these markets may not always meet Canadian food safety standards, which can increase the risk of foodborne illnesses. Additionally, some Chinese meat Shops have been criticized for selling exotic meats, such as pangolins and bats, which may increase the risk of zoonotic diseases.
Consuming meat, in general, carries health risks, including the potential for increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. Therefore, it is important to consume meat in moderation and to prioritize lean meats and plant-based protein sources in your diet.
Ultimately, it is up to individual consumers to weigh the potential benefits and risks of shopping at meat markets, including Chinese meat markets, and to make informed decisions about the foods they consume. It is always advisable to follow safe food handling practices, such as washing hands and cooking meat to appropriate temperatures, to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses.

Toronto ~ Montreal ~ Quebec
I was able to take a week off over the Canada Day long weekend so I used the time to take a quick trip out East and explore some other parts of Canada.
Toronto - 3 Days
We arrived in Toronto in the middle of a heatwave and faced 36 degree-plus days with high humidity. Oh well, we’re Australians. No big deal.
On our first day in Toronto, we escaped the heat by taking a bus tour to Niagara Falls. On the way we stopped at a winery where we tasted ice wine: wine that is made from grapes that freeze during winter. The grapes have to be picked by hand in the middle of the night to prevent them from thawing. The wine itself is very sweet and would go well with dessert or as an ice cream topping. We also enjoyed a brief shopping trip at Niagara-on-the-Lake and photo stops at the Whirlpool and the Flower Clock, but of course, the highlight was the Falls themselves.
Tumblr media
We went on the Hornblower cruise which took us right up to the falls to appreciate them in all their fullness (and splashiness).
Tumblr media
Us about to get very soggy
We stayed for the evening light show and fireworks, which were spectacular, before heading back to Toronto.
Tumblr media
Our second day in Toronto was July 1, Canada day. The Fort York National Historic Site was offering free admission to celebrate, so we took the opportunity to learn about some of the history of Toronto and various Canada vs US battles. The celebrations included some flashy artillery displays.
Tumblr media
In the afternoon we headed over to Toronto Island and enjoyed just walking around enjoying the view and the cooler weather by the lake.
We spent our last day in Toronto (the Canada day public holiday) at the Aquarium. It was packed with families and other tourists, but still very enjoyable. That afternoon we boarded a train which took us to Montreal.
Montreal -3 Days
Hands down my favourite thing about Montreal was THE FOOD. The cool buildings and history come a close second.
We spent our first day exploring the city. We climbed Mount Royal in the morning before the heat really set in.
Tumblr media
Then we took an *ahem* convoluted path down the mountain (Kieran let me navigate) to find lunch at Schwartz’s Deli. This is THE PLACE to go for Montreal smoked meat. It’s marinated and smoked over a period of about 2 weeks without using any chemicals to hasten the process. Tastes amazing with mustard.
Tumblr media
We also explored the Jean-Talon markets, bought some Montreal bagels, and took home some ravioli and sauce for dinner that night. It was nice to enjoy a home-cooked dinner.
On the second day, we made the trip up to St Joseph’s Oratory, which is huge and very specky. I especially liked their garden next to the church.
Tumblr media
In the afternoon we did some sightseeing around Old Montreal and the Old Port and tried a BeaverTail pastry. Delicious.
Tumblr media
Our last day in Montreal was still very hot so we took it easy and visited the Botanic Gardens and Insectarium. The Botanic Gardens are very well done, with separate exhibits like a fruit orchard and useful plants, and features an Indigenous Garden, a Japanese Garden, and a Chinese Garden. The Insectarium was also very cool!
Tumblr media
We then caught yet another train and travelled to Quebec City. I really like travelling by train actually, there’s a lot more leg room and it’s much more comfortable than flying.
Quebec City (2 days and a bit!)
The very first thing I wanted to do in Quebec city was to have a crepe breakfast. After brunching at a very nice little creperie in Old Quebec we spent a bit of time looking around before travelling to the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency (Montmorency falls). These falls are actually 30 m higher than Niagara Falls!
Tumblr media
On the second day, we spent some more time in Old Quebec and visited La Citadelle - the Brittish-built Fort in Quebec that is still an active military base. Afterwards, we spent more time looking around the Old Port and visited a market where I bought and ate a whole container of delicious Quebec strawberries before heading to the airport.
As we were sitting on the tarmac, halfway through the safety demonstration, it suddenly stopped and we were told there was a problem with the plane so we were towed back to the gate. At first they thought they could fix the problem but after waiting around for a while we were told the flight was cancelled and we would be re-scheduled to the next morning. It took a while but we did get meal vouchers, taxi vouchers and a hotel room from the airline. The hotel room was super nice - it had a king-sized bed, two TVs and a spa bath. Very different to the AirBnBs we had been staying in!
We made it back to Calgary safely mid-morning last Sunday in time to relax and enjoy the rest of our weekend. I am definitely going to miss all the delicious bagels, crepes and pastries Montreal and Quebec had to offer (but I have just found French market and a Montreal-style bagel shop near my house so all is not lost!).
