Hydraulic Cylinders: What You Need To Know (And Why!)
Hydraulic cylinders form the heart of a wide range of industrial applications, from driving heavy construction machinery to agricultural implements; they take one key role in transforming energy into force and motion. From the tie-rod hydraulic cylinders and welded hydrualic cyinders, to telesoping hydraulics cyliders — knowing what goes into these types of equipment is imperative for maintaining their functionality. The following article outlines how hydraulic cylinders work, detailing the important functions of each section to provide a basic understanding of these strong machines.
Hydraulic cylinders anatomyXSLHydraulics, XSL Hydraulic Cylinders, Custom Hydraulic Cylinder, Custom Hydraulic Cylinders
There are various types of hydraulic cylinders which have different components, and they all do work for making it functional. Knowing these pieces will give you a deeper understanding of the engineering involved in custom hydraulic cylinders, and enable you to choose or maintain those units without ignoring essential components.
Cylinder Barrel
The cylinder barrel is the body of a hydraulic cylinder, thus it is complete product material. This component contains the hydraulic pressure that is created in the cylinder and some internal parts. The durability and the precision machining of a barrel are essential to avoid premature failure in custom hydraulic cylinders via poor operation under high pressure.
Cylinder Base
The barrel of the hydraulic cylinder is closed on one end by a cap called a Cylinder base or Cap; this bounds as well. The base can be mounted on the barrel by welding, threading bolts or tie rods according to design. The base also acts as a mounting place for the hydraulic cylinder, locking it in to its machinery or equipment home. The cylinder base of tie-rod hydraulic cylinders and many others needs to be attached correctly inorder for it to work properly.
Cylinder Head
On the opposite end of that barrel is a cylinder head sealing off the barrel and containing ports for piston rod extension/retraction. The cylinder head is equipped to hold in the pressure of a piston and has seals that don't allow hydraulic fluid escape as it moves through its travel. The design of a cylinder head is one example: in welded hydraulic cylinders which require that the seal hold pressure, quality can be especially critical.
Piston
This piston is a very important member which moves inside the cylinder barrel at hydraulic pressures, to give force or power ot push he rod of the engine. The piston has grooves for seals, and the seals are what keep pressure while preventing fluid from bypassing around the outside of the piston. Using telescopic hydraulic cylinders is reliable and efficient, but the piston must be accurate enough for it to hold up against great or even high forces when working through hundreds of cycles.
Piston Rod
The piston rod is made from hard chrome-plated cold-rolled steel and extends all the way up through to the cylinder head. This is what attaches to the machinery like a plow or dump body that you are going to operate. Movements and the environment are two key factors that make a piston rod useful in its application, therefore a good quality must be expected by any manufacturer. Many times the manufacture of custom hydraulic cylinders focuses on improving the strength, and wear properties in a rod; which will increase overall performance.
The Role of Hydraulic Seals
Any hydraulic cylinder relies on the functionality of a number of hyrasulic seals to retain fluid and maintain smooth force transfer between piston and rod. Hydraulic cylinders are useful only if the seals in them are excellent and compatible with certain types of materials which include rubber-like nitrile, polyurethane based or Teflon®/fluorocarbon.
Primary and Secondary Seals
They are the primary seals against fluid leakage with secondary or buffer seal make up. These seals of course should be selected carefully depending on the cylinder's operating pressure, speed and temperature range. However, you might find that a hydraulic cylinders manufacturer suggests fluorocarbon seals for high-temperature applications or polyurethane seals in filthy environments; alternatives best suited to withstand harsh conditions.
Bearing Elements and Wipers
Bearings elements help to support the alignment of the piston rod and also reduces friction & wear due to different movements during working operation. They keep the rod clean by removing dirt, dust and moisture so that these contaminants cannot get into the cylinder to create harm. Despite what anybody may inform you of the contrary, suitable maintenance to your bearing elements and wipers is essential for extending the lifetime of welded (as well as other) hydraulic cylinders.
Quality Components for Impressive Performance
For the best performance of your hydraulic cylinders, you should use high standard replacement parts and components. That doesn´t encompass just the selection of appropriate seals, rods and other essential elements according to your specific application requirements. At XSLHydraulics.com, we hot sale trade from china hydraulic cylinder manufacturing and carving a wide range of cylinders for use in diverse industries around the globe.
Conclusion
Knowing what you are dealing with in regards to hydraulic cylinders is important if you want them working as efficiently, and reliably, as possible. It does not matter if you deal with tie-rod hydraulic cylinders, welded hydraulic cylinders or telescopic units so tracked or mobile machinery; all of our parts can be inspected and in compliance which helps against breakdowns but also to extend the lifetime.

With a fully customized Glock easily hitting 4 figures, it just shows the confidence he has placed in our Custom Shop creations. Kate, our Custom Shop Manager, immediately sent out a request for suggestions for "cool" designs. Our employees from shipping and receiving, packaging, customer service and the retail trade threw all their contributions into the hat. Kate was literally inundated with color suggestions, slide cuts, sharing options and frame modifications
Glock 19 gen 5 slide
One suggestion stood out simply because we had never done it before. "How about tiger stripes on a chrome slide?" was an exciting proposal from one of the stock market makers. It was exciting because GlockStore has done many camouflage patterns in CeraKote paint as well as Hydro graphic prints, but never in the metal finish on the slide. Starting with Glock's flagship pistol, the Model 17, we sent it to our machine shop and had an RMR Red Dot sight mount cut into the slide. We chose to use the "co-witness" style so that the shooter could use iron sights if needed. Our gunsmiths then removed the original factory finish to reveal the bare stainless slide. One of the brush makers polished the slide to a mirror finish and then we sent it out for our Hard Chrome finish. I'd like to tell you the rest of the details of how we created the amazing finish, but I've been sworn to secrecy and I like my job. Many of our customers are competitive shooters who rely on our Pyramid Trigger to improve their speed and accuracy. Our adjustable Pyramid Trigger systems allow the shooter to choose the weight of their trigger pull, and the length of the trigger pull. This allows for faster follow-up shots as well as better accuracy because the shorter and shorter trigger pull will not "pull the pistol" off target.
Glock 19 slide kit
The 3.5 lb Double Diamond creates the lighter trigger pull. Binder and Competition Spring Kit, which are both included with the Complete and Ultimate trigger kits. Competition Springs include 2lb, 3lb, 4, and 6lb shock springs that allow the shooter to choose the pull weight from a factory 5.5-6lb down to a competition weight of 2lb. We finished our Tiger Stripe Show Shot pistol with a Chrome Metallic Control Kit & Pins. This 7-part kit consists of a factory extended slide stop lever and an extended slide lock. Also included, a stainless locking block pin, trigger pin, and trigger housing pin…including the Gen3 and the (Gen4 long housing pin). GlockStore offers this kit in our 8 CeraKote colors (Black, Chrome, Gold, Blue, Dull Dark World, OD Green, Pink and Red) as well as custom colors made to order on demand. We also added a Teardrop Extended Magazine Edition in Gold to match the finish. Read the full article

We Turned a United Pacific 1932 Ford Truck into our 2018 Road Tour Cruiser
This is the 23rd year of the STREET RODDER Road Tour. For 22 of those years, the diverse collection of purpose-built street rods that Road Tour leader Jerry Dixey has driven all over America has included Fords and Chevys in about a 3-to-1 ratio. We have built ’20s, ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s cars. We’ve built roadsters, coupes, sedans, phaetons, and convertibles. Ever single one of them has been innovative, eye-catchng, roadworthy, and cool. Not one of them has been a closed cab commercial truck.
That changed in 2018.
From a historical standpoint, our timing was perfect. The year 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the introduction of Ford Motor Company’s Model TT, the first Ford specifically built as a truck. Previous Ford trucks had essentially been converted cars with their rear sheetmetal removed and replaced by wooden wagon beds or aftermarket beds.
Last year also marked the introduction of United Pacific Industries’ steel ’32 Ford truck body, unveiled at the SEMA Show. UP had introduced its steel 1932 five-window coupe at SEMA in 2014. The coupe has validated the company’s place in the street rod market, and we had confidence that the truck would carry the same quality.
The new ’32 truck body is officially licensed by Ford. David Odegard of UP said that the company spent three years reverse-engineering the body to ensure that it conforms precisely to the originals and that UP parts (available separately) are compatible with factory parts. One difference is that the UP 18-gauge exterior panels are heavier than the 19-gauge steel used 86 years ago. The inner structure uses 14- and 16-gauge, the same as Ford did.
Choosing the new ’32 Ford pickup to lead the 2018 United Pacific/STREET RODDER Road Tour Presented by Ford Performance Parts was the easiest part of the project. For the build, STREET RODDER turned again to Hot Rods By Dean in Phoenix. STREET RODDER has worked with Dean Livermore at HRBD on three earlier Road Tour vehicles (’38 Ford coupe, ’59 Chevy Impala, and ’66 Ford Fairlane). He knows what we like and we like what he builds. We wanted the truck to reflect classic ’60s hot rod style and we needed it to withstand five months of virtually nonstop cross-country cruising. Designer Eric Black created some concept illustrations to get the style just right, and Livermore and the HRBD builders turned it into the real thing.
Like many of the recent Road Tour vehicles, the truck rides on chassis built at Roadster Shop in Mundelein, Illinois. Neal, Phil, and Jeremy Gerber started with a fully boxed repro Deuce frame, reinforced with a Model A–style front crossmember and X-member. Pete and Jakes is a great source for traditional suspension parts and supplied what we needed for our truck. The period frontend includes a drilled, dropped Super Bell I-beam axle, ’37-’41 style spindles, hairpins, tubular shocks, and a monoleaf spring reversed-eye spring—all chromed to shine like jewels. Flaming River provided the entire steering system from the Vega box and Pitman arm all the way up to the tilt column and Vette steering wheel. Roadster Shop added their Panhard bar to the Pete and Jakes rearend, featuring a polished Winters quick-change, heavy-duty four-bars, and a pair of AFCO adjustable coilover shocks. The whole chassis is a combination of traditional coolness and reliable performance.
UP provided the truck body, doors, fenders, hood, grille, cowl top, and sides with windshield pillars, fenders, firewall, floor, bumpers, LED turn-indicator spreader bar, handles, mirrors, and even the headlights and taillights. Two cowl tops are available with or without a vent; we chose a vent. Dan Fink Metalworks shipped one of their ’32 Ford grille inserts to complete the exterior. The fasteners for this project were provided by Automotive Racing Products (ARP).
All of the UP components are offered individually in their catalog. For the most part, HRBD left the sheetmetal just as Ford designed it and UP recreated it. One notable custom modification to the ’32 specs was with the bed. Dean and his fabricators shortened it 12 inches to even up the dimensions in front of and behind the rear wheels. There is still plenty of room for all of Jerry Dixey’s luggage plus the stainless fuel tank, custom built for the pickup by Rock Valley and equipped with a Holley in-take fuel pump. The inside of the bed is protected with bedliner coating from 3M.
One disadvantage of choosing a pickup truck as the Road Tour vehicle is that an open bed doesn’t provide any security or protection from the weather. The easy solution is a bed cover and we had many to choose from. We really like the retractable tonneau cover from Retrax. We needed our cover modified for the shortened bed and we wanted it to fit over the bedrails. Retrax was able to accommodate us in both cases and is now incorporating that design into their product line.
When choosing a paint color for an early Ford, it’s hard to beat Washington Blue, or any color in that neighborhood. The PPG Nantucket Blue used by HRBD on the Road Tour truck is a couple of shades lighter and is perfect for the early Ford look we were going for. Also in keeping with retro paint styling the fenders were sprayed black. Someday, when the truck slows down for a few days, some lowkey black pinstriping will be added to the beltline. There isn’t a lot of brightwork on the truck, but the parts and pieces that needed to be chromed were sent to Sherm’s Custom Plating in Sacramento. Perfect chrome is the finishing touch to a project, and we have used Sherm’s for many years.
As with paint choice, wheel and tire selection can be a make-it-or-break-it decision. In this case they had to be traditional. We knew just where to look: Coker Tire and Wheel Vintiques. Our Firestone Deluxe Champion bias-ply blackwall tires, now manufactured by Coker from Firestones molds, measure 5.60-15 in front and 7.00-16 in the rear. The 15×5 and 16×6 steel wheels are ’40-’48 Ford reproductions from Wheel Vintiques’ Gennie series, powdercoated black and dressed up with trim rings and ’41 Ford–style caps. The retro-style wheels and tires are paired with up-to-date front and rear disc brakes and master cylinder from Wilwood.
STREET RODDER has always promoted the idea of Ford in a Ford and have used the Road Tour cars to drive home the point—filling the engine compartments with a variety of Ford engines from Flatheads to 427 small-blocks, an EcoBoost, and Coyote modular engines. Ford Performance has been a valuable partner, signing on as a presenting sponsor and providing us with engines. The UP 1932 truck is our 13th Ford-powered Ford since we started doing the Road Tour in 1996. This time, the engine is a Ford Performance 347-inch small-block, which required some modification to the UP firewall to fit.
The 360-horse crate engine is built upon a Boss 302 block, bored 0.030-over, with Ford’s X-Head aluminum cylinder heads. The cylinders are loaded with Mahle forged pistons with I-beam rods connecting them to the Scat forged crank. HRBD topped the Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake with a Holley Terminator Stealth throttle body EFI system and aluminum air cleaner—modern electronic injection with the appearance of a traditional carburetor. The MSD ignition system includes a billet distributor and MSD6 EFI ignition control, with Ford Performance plug wires. Patriot Tri-Y headers draw out the exhaust gases. The serpentine drive system is a Vintage Air Front Runner, which includes the water pump, A/C compressor, and Powermaster alternator. Keeping things cool is not a problem with a U.S. Radiator, shroud, and electric pull fan.
The 4L60E transmission from Hughes Performance was delivered with a Ford small-block compatible bell housing for easy installation and is controlled by a US Shift Quick 4 transmission electronic controller from Baumann Electronic Controls. The custom Dynotech steel driveshaft connects the trans to the Winters Performance rearend. AMSOIL INC. has been a faithful Road Tour sponsor, providing engine oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, brake fluid, coolant, and chassis grease.
HRBD has used Hot Rod Interiors by Glenn on many projects, including previous Road Tour cars. The first step in completing the cab was a complete lining of Dynamat and Dynaliner to insulate against heat, noise, and vibration. Dakota Digital built an elliptical analog instrument cluster, mounted in the UP dash. The subdash was fabricated by HRBD for the Vintage Air vents and HBRD billet V-8 column drop. Power door glass and the windshield wipers from Specialty Power Windows are updated components. The leather-wrapped Classic Lowback seats from Procar by Scat suit the ’60s hot rod style we wanted for the truck. Dark gray German weave carpet surrounds the console, fabricated at Dean’s to house the head unit for the Custom Autosound stereo, Vintage Air A/C controls, power ports, and the Lokar shifter and boot. Lokar also contributed pedals and throttle linkage. Wiring the truck was easy with a Painless Performance Products kit.
The newly finished United Pacific/STREET RODDER Road Tour truck Presented by Ford Performance Parts was delivered to the 2018 Back To The 50’s car show in June, hit the road immediately, and won’t slow down until the end of October. By all measures, HRBD’s version of UP’s ’32 hauler is a huge success and a fitting way to celebrate 100 years of Ford trucks. Incidentally, 2017 was also the 100th anniversary of the Henry Ford & Son Company Fordson tractor. We could’ve decided to build our first Road Tour tractor—but we didn’t. Jerry Dixey, consider yourself lucky.

Mounting Tires on Wire Wheels
You simply can’t have a cool car without wheels. While you are all saying in unison “Thank you Captain Obvious,” I’ll go one step further: “You can’t have a cool hot rod with cool wheels.” Wheels and tires are one of the most important choices to be made when building a hot rod. They set the mood, the stance, the very spirit of every specialty car.
One might argue the wheels and tires should be the first choice and simply build the car around the wheels. From restorod to Pro Street, wheels and tires make the statement. The choices are many: steelies, chrome reverse, mag wheel, real magnesium wheels, wire wheels, front runners, Lancers, Sombreros, Moons, Baby Moons, spinner caps, spider caps, dog dish, glamour rings, beauty bands, Merc pancake caps, kidney beans, the list goes on. The trick is choosing the right wheel for your car.
The automobile wheel has seen interesting transformations over the years, from the early wood spoke wheels of the first automobiles to wire wheels, then solid and artillery-style steel wheels, and back to optional wire wheels on glamour cars like Cadillac, Chryslers, Packards, and the Buick Skylark, to name a few. Wire wheels would largely disappear from the scene by the mid ’50s to the early ’60s when once again wire wheels adorned some Thunderbirds that resurfaced in the ’60s.
While wire wheels aren’t right for every hot rod or custom, they are also the perfect wheel for other-style hot rods. If you are going for an early vintage hot rod look on a 1935 or earlier hot rod, a set of painted wires goes a long way to cementing the look. Building a ’50s custom? Chrome wires work there and often a vintage-styled restorod needs a little sparkle from a set of chrome Skylark wires. Now, we’re not going to get into the myriad of choices of wire wheels, be it 32-, 36-, 40-, or 56-spoke wheels, but we thought it might be interesting to follow along as a set of brand-new, chrome-plated Thunderbird wire wheels are mounted with new tires. These Thunderbird wire wheels feature 56 stainless steel spokes connecting a chrome center to the chrome outer band with a T-bird spinner hubcap in the center. As it turns out you can buy both the Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels (chrome or painted) and the correct vintage-style tires at Coker Tire. Coker Tire has a wide selection of different-style wire wheels.
If you buy the wheels only, be sure to find a quality tire store familiar with mounting wire wheels. We know all this because we recently toured the Coker Tire and Honest Charley facilities, and part of our “insider” tour by Corky Coker included the warehouses and the mounting and balancing shop. Tours of the Coker Tire and Honest Charley facilities are available daily showcasing a great selection of vintage cars and motorcycles (although the tour does not include warehouse access). If you are in or around Chattanooga, Tennessee, be sure to stop by Coker Tire; it is a tour worth taking.
Wire wheels require a little extra care when mounting tires. First, regardless of the type of tire you purchase, wire wheels require the use of an inner tube. For clarification, “tubeless tires” mean the tire bead is designed to provide an airtight seal against the rim. It does not mean you cannot use an inner tube. Of course tires produced prior to the tubeless technology will always require an inner tube as will any wire wheel. This may seem obvious, but whenever you are mounting new tires on wire wheels remember to use new inner tubes. Inner tubes will degrade over time just like tires, and while the tube may look good, you should still use new tubes.
The neat part about purchasing the tires, inner tubes, and wheels from Coker Tire is the wheels are delivered to your door with the tires mounted and balanced. Since the Coker team mounts only vintage wheels and tires, they are experts with wire wheels, ensuring a perfectly balanced set of wheels and tires every time. To complete the job simply open the box, mount the wheels, and apply your favorite tire dressing.
If you’re looking for brand-new, period-perfect tires for your latest hot rod, muscle car, or vintage restoration Coker Tire has one on the shelf for your application. This is just part of the vast inventory in the Coker warehouse.
Of course tires only work if you put a wheel inside it and once again Corky Coker took us for an inside look at the rows of wheels in the Coker Tire warehouse; the inventory is impressive.
Also stored in the warehouse are the molds for vintage tires. Many of the tires sold through Coker Tires are made from the original molds. After a manufacturing run of tires the molds are returned to the warehouse.
When most hot rodders think of Coker Tire they may be thinking street tires, but Coker Tire also manufactures an extensive line of race tires, such as these Phoenix racing slicks.
Taking the Coker tour means old cars and trucks of every description. Corky loves them all, from muscle cars to wood-wheeled, brass era cars. We found this 1914 American-LaFrance truck napping in the warehouse; just one of many future projects.
This is one of the tire mounting stations. State-of-the-art equipment like the touchless mounting machine and computerized spin-balancing ensure flawless mounting and precise balancing of every wheel and tire.
After our tour we made our way to the tire mounting and balancing service area to follow along with the proper mounting and balancing of wire wheels. We have a Thunderbird wire wheel, a radial tubeless whitewall tire, and a new inner tube. Together they will make a great vintage package.
First the tire is mounted on this simple examination rack and checked to be certain there are no foreign objects or sharp areas inside the tire that could potentially damage the inner tube.
If you are using an inner tube inside any tire it is important to remove any object that could be abrasive to the tube. This hard label is actually bonded to the inside of the tire and could be a problem for an inner tube.
A small air grinder removes the label and smooths the potential problem area. Very little rubber is actually removed in the process.
Here we can see the small area smoothed by the sanding disc. Talcum powder is sprinkled inside the tire prior to installing the tube to help prevent any potential chaffing of the tube.
The brand-new Thunderbird wire wheel is mounted to the tire-mounting machine, being careful not to damage any of the chrome plating in the process.
To get the tire started on the rim, the rear bead of the tire is worked over the rim by hand.
The tire machine will push the remainder of the back side of the tire over the rim.
Next the new tube is carefully installed inside the tire. The tube stem is installed in the rim hole and then the tube is worked around the rim. Wire wheels require a tube because generally air will find a way to leak around the spokes.
With the back bead over the rim some air is added to the tube to inflate it inside the tire. Just enough air pressure to make the tube round is used at this time. This will hold the tube in place on the rim.
Now it is time to press the front tire bead over the rim, but first the tire bead is lubricated so it will easily slip into place.
The touchless tire mounting machine makes quick work of slipping the front tire bead over the rim.
With both the front and rear beads of the tire over the rim we can inflate the inner tube with enough air to seat the tire beads against the rim.
After the tire beads are properly seated on the rim, the air pressure is adjusted to the proper level for the tire. With the tire at the proper pressure it is mounted to the tire-balancing machine.
The balancing machine arm detects any rim run out and that information will indicate how best to locate the tire on the rim.
The computerized balancing machine indicates for best balance this tire should be rotated on the rim.
A mark is made on the tire where the computer balancing machine indicates the tire should be rotated.
Guided by the computer, a second mark was made on the rim. The tire must be rotated on the rim to align with this mark on the rim with the mark on the tire.
The front and rear tire beads are broken free of the rim to permit rotating the tire on the rim. Some air remains in the tube to keep it lightly inflated during the rotation process.
The tire is lifted upward and gently rotated on the rim, taking special care not to allow the tube to be rotated.
Here we can see the two marks are aligned. This is the optimum location for balancing the wheel and tire. Once again the tire is inflated to seat the tire beads in the rim.
The tire pressure was then adjusted to the proper operating pressure and the wheel was mounted back on the computerized spin balancing machine.
The safety hood is pulled down and the tire is spun up to speed for balancing.
This time the balancing machine indicates where to place the wheel weights and the amount of weight required to properly balance the wheel.
Stick-on wheel weights are used to balance the wheel. The inside of the rim is wiped clean with wax and grease remover prior to affixing the weights to the inside of the rim.
With the proper amount of weight in place the wheel and tire once again spins up to speed. This time the computer screen indicates we have a perfectly balanced wheel and tire.
Of course Coker Tire has many different style wheels and tires, from wide whites the gold line tires and everything in between. In combination with their wide wheel choices you can find the perfect combination for virtually any vintage car.
Each wheel and tire is carefully packaged with a heavy protective cardboard disc banded in place.
After mounting the other three wire wheels and tires in the same manner as the first, they were sent down the rollers to be shipped to a happy Thunderbird owner.

A “Neu” Look at Throttle Safety
A speedy response from a throttle safety mechanism makes a huge difference.  Neuline’s new Throttle Safety is designed to work extremely fast. The Neuline Throttle Safety installs on the throttle rod and works with your carburetor’s return springs to mechanically monitor that the throttle can return to idle. The Throttle Safety plugs into the low voltage end of the ignition system so it will not interfere with ignition timing or spark. The wires come pre-twisted to reduce EMI interference and work with a variety of ignition systems and any engine size. The Throttle Safety will instantly shut the engine off if anything prevents the throttle from returning back to idle. No driver response is needed and it acts completely on its own bypassing driver reaction time.  Neuline’s Throtle Safety package has everything to make install fast and easy, including the required return springs, carburetor swivel mounts, insulated wire connectors, and all hardware. For more information call (704) 232-0919 or visit www.neulineco.com.

Jones’ Own
Jones Racing Products has invested years of research and development into perfecting their own brand of power steering fluid. This crystal clear, fully synthetic power steering fluid is capable of exceeding all others in overall performance. The steering system’s demands of the fluid with high pump flow rates and extreme temperatures make this fully synthetic a top choice to provide the driver with a confident and consistent feel from start to finish of a race. This fluid will not develop foam, causing cavitation of the pump nor will it break down during long green flag runs at full operating temperatures.
A major advantage of Jones Racing Products’ clear power steering fluid is that it helps the team to keep a watchful eye on the stability of the system with just a quick glance at the fluid itself.  Racers are able to spot any type of contamination in the fluid, helping to catch any problems with the rack, steering box or hoses. Catching one of these problems will protect the rest of the system and keep the car on the track and ultimately in Victory Lane.
The quart bottles are key to a quick and easy fluid change; two quarts of fluid changed out around 1,500 to 2,000 laps will keep the entire steering system working like new.
For more information call (610) 847-2028 or visit www.jonesracingproducts.com.

Stop Bad Heat
Do you need a shield from the heat of your exhaust?  Koolmat’s Heatmaster can be your solution!  The shield is textured and stops 2,500 degrees of radiant heat.  It is made to fit the top of exhaust pipes, catalytic converters, and mufflers – fitting both the width and length.  The Heatmaster has attached grommets on the edges for easy install with wire or straps and needs no air gap.  The shield is so effective you can touch it with bare hands while the car is running and not get burnt. There is a significant drop in temperature with the Heatmaster as shown by testing.  In tests without the shield exhaust temps were at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  With the shield the temperatures dropped to 136 degrees.  For more information call (877) 566-5369 or visit www.koolmat.com
The Strange Way of Torsion Bars
Designed to satisfy the most demanding Modified racer, Strange puts an emphasis on the manufacturing and process and innovation of all if its products, including the Strange Oval premium torsion bars.  The torsion bar rate (in lbs. per inch) depends on the effective length of the bar as well as the diameter of the bar. The rate of the given bar will also depend on whether the bar is solid or gun-drilled. Strange Oval torsion bars are gun-drilled with a 7/16-inch inner diameter hole. In order to achieve the same torsional rate as solid bars, the effective diameter is increased, which gives the bar higher mechanical strength compared to its solid counterpart. To further increase strength, Strange maximizes the effective length of their bars by shortening the splined end and bushing area to a combined length of two inches on each side. Maximizing the effective length allows for a slightly larger outer diameter, thus increasing the bar strength further. This coupled with Strange’s proprietary heat treat, straightening methods and shot peening makes for some of the top tier bars on the market. Strange Oval offers both solid and gun-drilled bars. For more information call (800) 653.1099 or visit www.racestrange.com
The High Caliber Caliper
PFC has continued to add to its arsenal of braking solutions for racers.  The Z94 monobloc four-piston caliper is one of the newest entrants in the asphalt Late Model racing market.  The caliper features a robust internal fluid cross over tube, adding strength and reducing weight.  The addition of the anti-rotation fluid inlet, increases rigidity and reduces the potential for interference.  A monobloc (one-piece) design offers increased stiffness for less pedal travel, improved response, and decreased drag.  It also has high tension seals for proper piston rollback to reduce drag.  The calipers are wide 5 and 5×5 compatible and accept 1.25-inch thick 11.75- to 12.7-inch diameter discs.  For more information call (800) 521-8874 or visit www.pfcbrakes.com
The Race Alternator
These Denso-style alternators are Powermaster’s smallest alternators.  They feature a true one-wire hookup and a maximum of 20,000 RPM.  The alternator has a 14.9 set voltage and has a high output-to-weight ratio.  Powermaster’s alternator feaures XS Volt – which is a powerful internal regulating system providing a great deal of control without adjustments.  Other features include digital control with response time in milliseconds, adjustable voltage between 13.5 and 18.5 volts, reliable internals with short-circuit protection and loss-of-ground protection, and one-wire operation making it easy to connect and turn on/off with the engine.  For more information call (630) 957-4019 or visit www.powermastermotorsports.com
Also, KRC Power Steering makes a bracket to hold these denso-style alternators.  They are aluminum and fit any small block Chevy.  For more information call (770) 422-5135 or visit www.krcpower.com
