#673 Nostalgia...PRICELESS Moments .. :-)
Tumblr media
Changing school in XI standard can be risky. I took all the courage to change as I just couldn’t tolerate the school where I studied X standard. I made great friends in that school but just couldn’t tolerate the model in which that school was run. Gill Adarsh in Chennai was the school I joined in XI standard. It was pretty far off from home. I had to travel by bus for about an hour. Gill Adarsh used to run with the principle that students should be given freedom on learn how they want to. I enjoyed that as I never liked to be forced. Another aspect which was the reason to join this school was the facilities they had for sport and support they gave their students for the same.  Their cricket team was one of the best in Chennai along with SBOA.  Cricket coaching used to start early in the morning hours at 630 AM. Students had to invest in cricket set which I didn’t have the courage to ask dad. Deepak was one my friends in the class. He played for school and was a brilliant player. He was a Kannadiga too which helped. He called me to his house over weekends to play cricket in house in T nagar. He even told he is ready to share the kit if I am interested in joining the team. I hesitated and asked time to think through. Just when I was about to discuss with Dad, he looked tense. My sister was trying for medical seat in Karnataka and she didn’t get through in free seat category. She had all the bad luck. She studied XI and XII in Chennai. She got 94% marks but was not eligible to take entrance in TN as she didn’t study minimum 5 years needed. She took entrance in Karnataka but subjects/syllabus were different. Though she had her eyes in MBBS, she settled down for BSc.  Luck was not in her side. Dad felt he was partly responsible for this as he had accepted transfer to Chennai at critical stage of Seema’s education. Seema made a great career later in Marketing research and storytelling. She is making LANTERNs fly nowadays which is a great art. (Flying Lanterns is the banner under which she runs story telling sessions )
In midst of all this, me asking Dad’s permission to join cricket coaching would lead to more tension in the house. So I focused in studies instead. I was always an average student. I was lazy. I was a kind of student where in if effort is applied, I would do well but I hardly did that. I put all effort into my studies in next 2 years. I had barely got 80% marks in X standard. I needed minimum 93+ in PCM to get into good college via free seat category. In all my years of education 1993-95 was the period where I put effort to the fullest. I neither did before that nor did after that !!. I managed to get 91% in PCM in XI standard. XII standard classes started in Jan 1994 itself (6 months ahead of time !!) I joined tuitions in XII standard. Though I was average student, my parents never forced me to join tuition at any point of time. Thanks to a minor accident, I was barely able to go to tuition for 6 months. So I had to put all the effort on my own. Exams was in March 1995.  I prepared a full-fledged DAY-TO-DAY plan from Dec1994 -Feb 1995 for 5 AM to 11 PM. I had copies of that plan till 2 years back. It literally had when I had to take lunch and bath break as well. That helped a great extent in my exams. Plan makes me laugh even now when I think about it. On the day of the result, I first saw my full marks which was barely 88%. I was a bit shocked. That’s when Deepak grabbed my marks sheet to compare with his. He told I am the class topper in PCM !! I couldn’t believe it. When I had a closer look at my marks sheet,  I saw that I had got 196/200 in Mathematics, 195/200 in Chemistry and 190/200 in Physics.  96.75% in PCM was way beyond my dreams. Even in dreams, it never went beyond 92%. Mom and Dad also gave an expression as if to say “ Is this really your marks?? “ .
In midst of all this, I had literally sacrificed watching and playing sports. During my XII standard, I used to literally read in my bus travel to school as well.  I used to even read on my way from home to bus stop. There was a 70+ aged uncle (Mr Narayan as I found out later) who used to board the bus along with me. He was ex LIC manager who used to go to office daily to spend 2-3 hours with his colleagues. He apparently was doing this for last 12 since he retired. He was getting very curious as to why I was always reading. I just used to give a smile without responding to his question. We would literally sit next to each other almost every morning. He would read newspaper and I would read my boring subjects. As and when he would turn to sports section, my head would turn. He started noticing that.  He asked if I am interested in sports. I nodded with a huge grin. I didn’t have time to read newspaper those days.  He kept noticing that over a period of time.  He started conversing me on my studies as well. I somehow felt my stress level go down when I used to speak to him. He was rank holder in Bcom as well. It almost became a habit to spend time with him in the bus. If I used to miss the bus, he would wait for me in bus stop so that we would travel together. He in fact cut specific section of short where latest scores were provided and gave me to read so that I can be up to date in sports. That was wonderful gesture from him. This continued till I finished by XII. He was more thrilled with marks than I was. He asked for a treat. Mom and dad called him home for lunch. He loved the gesture. He moved to Madurai later that year as his son opted for transfer. I never interacted with him since then. But it was wonderful relationship which I had with him.  The more I recall these incidents now, I feel he was my mentor.  It’s been 24 years since I last met him.
Such relationships give spark of joy  when we go through it but the best phase is when we recall such nostalgic memories later in the life.  Just like VISA advertisement puts it “PRICELESS” !!!
