Stanley DeWitt Gaines, 80, of Waldorf, Maryland passed away July 15, 2019 at the Charles County Hospice House in the aftermath of a devastating stroke suffered on June 27.
Stanley, born on June 17, 1939 to Alpha Cox and Henry DeWitt Gaines, spent a happy childhood in Memphis, Tennessee, surrounded by his older sisters and brother, enjoying his mother’s skillful cooking and working part-time in his father’s grocery store.
He met his wife of fifty-eight years, Colleen Caldwell Gaines, while they were both students at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina; they were married on June 16, 1961. Together, they settled in southern Maryland, raising a family of four children and eventually beginning the ministry that has come to be known as the Southern Maryland Fellowship Church and Christian Academy in White Plains.
With his Bachelor of Science degree in Business from BJU’s Class of 1965, Stanley worked for many years in insurance and real estate and — due to the needs of the aforementioned four children — held a night position at the Safeway of District Heights, Maryland. Additionally, he was a long time member of Riverdale Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School to fifth grade boys for a decade.
In his spare time, Stanley enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching classic movies, and in more recent years, spending time in Myrtle Beach.
Since its founding in 1985, Stanley has actively held leadership positions with the Southern Maryland Fellowship Church and Christian Academy, most recently as the organization’s President of the Board of Elders. He regularly participated in their weekly Awana program and was active in the Men’s Prayer Breakfast gatherings. In fact, many will most remember Stanley Gaines for his unwavering commitment to extended daily prayer — prayers that included each and every member of his growing family, as well as the many prayer requests sent to him through the church/school.
Stanley is survived by his wife, Colleen Caldwell Gaines, and children, Kathleen (Terry) Davis, Maureen (Randall) Gaines-Ramey, Matthew (Jennifer) Gaines, and Andrew Gaines. His legacy includes grandchildren: Emily (José) Pichardo, Victoria (Patrick) James, Olivia (Matthew) Hardwick, Susan Merkle, Caleb Merkle, Matthew Gaines, Zachary Gaines, Annie Gaines, and a great granddaughter, Kaylee Pichardo. His surviving relatives include his sister, Emily Worthy of Georgia, and a number of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Stanley’s other siblings, Addie Sue Sudduth, Martha Jean Whitington, and Edward Gaines, as well as his parents, all predeceased him.
A private funeral service for immediate family members will be held later this week. Other family, friends, and members of his church family are invited to a Memorial Service in Stanley’s honor to be held on Saturday, July 20 at Southern Maryland Fellowship Church, 9805 Faith Baptist Church Rd, White Plains, MD 20695. A receiving line will begin at noon with the service following at 2 p.m. Please call 301-870-2550 for more information.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Southern Maryland Fellowship Church (P.O. Box 1668, White Plains, MD 20695) or Hospice of Charles County (2505 Davis Road, Waldorf, MD 20603).
Three words that best characterize the life of this memorable man are faithful, prayerful, and strong.

“You bloody old towser-faced boot-faced totem-pole on a crap reservation.”
Yesterday I got the newspapers from the front yard, and all my plans for the day changed. It was so cold I decided to stay home. I had a wonderfully cozy day and an early nap. Today is a bit warmer so I’ll venture out bundled only a bit. I got a new vest for Christmas and it is just perfect for today. I would like to do bodily harm to Peter Pan from the Geico ad. Considering the reactions of Phil…

Trying To Stay Forever Young
Trying To Stay Forever Young
I’m sitting on the deck of our home at Rainbow Lake.  A lone chickadee hops from branch to branch and then vanishes into the thicket of trees.  I can see the shimmer of the setting sun reflecting from the water below us.  Only patches of the lake can be seen, we need to trim a few trees so I can watch the kayakers splash by on warm afternoons.
I hear the distinct honking of the Canadian Geese as…

Dr. James Vecent "Jim" Pertree was welcomed to his heavenly home on Aug. 17, 2018, after a three-year battle with an unknown disease. His strong will to live, God's providence over his life and the love and prayers of his many friends and family carried him through the last three years.
He was born on Feb. 22, 1946, and raised in Marietta, GA by parents Ralph and Ethel Pertree. He attended Bob Jones University in the 1964-65 school year and the North Georgia Military Academy. While serving 14 years as a captain in the U.S. Army, he toured in Vietnam.
After moving to OKC, he worked as an Undercover Agent for the OKC Police Department for five years while pursuing a master's degree at OCU. Upon graduation, he took a position with Federal Drug Enforcement Agency as a Undercover Federal Agent. But his true passion was being the owner of Complete Care Chiropractic where God used him to help many people. He never lost his passion for being a chiropractor, even giving his last adjustment to his son, Tyler, while seeking treatment at Mayo Clinic. He was a devoted Youth and Adult Sunday School Teacher for 20 years at First Baptist Church in Moore, OK.
Jim had an undeniable love for hunting and fishing and all things outdoors. He was an avid purchaser of hunting and fishing supplies and was known to have his very own "Bass Pro Shop" in his garage. If you've ever met Jim, you have probably been pranked by him. He had a love for all things funny and kept his family and friends anxiously awaiting the next time he would pull a practical joke on them.
He will be dearly missed by his loving son, Tyler Pertree and his wife Mollie; his daughter, Courtney Fisher and her husband Ryan; his precious friend, Charlotte MaGuire and her husband Gregg; his five grandkids who adored him, Jaiden, Brody, Christian, Baylor, and Jule; and his handpicked brother, Casey Valez.
Jim will be remembered by many extended family members and dear friends. A special time of Viewing will be held Aug. 21, 2018, 5-7 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 301 NE 27th Street, Moore, OK 73160. Services Celebrating the Life of Jim are scheduled at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22 at First Baptist Church of Moore. Burial will follow at Heritage Burial Park at South Lakes, 4000 SW 119th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73173.
The Pertree family would like to thank the Norman Veterans Center and Good Shepherd Hospice for their exceptional care of Jim over the past three years. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.tribute.care (405.292.4787).

Wait. Who is this BJU Bluegrass band again?
It’s the Blackberry Blossom Farm Bluegrass band with the Skillman family.
The man playing the bass in the Facebook videos is Jonathan Skillman, BJU Class of 1991 and a “Personality” that year.
Tumblr media
His wife, Angie Loucks Skillman, attended BJU through her Sophomore year also in 1991.
Tumblr media
Jonathan’s mother and father, Audrey and Del Skillman, both attended Bob Jones University. Del graduated in 1965.
Tumblr media
The BJU 2018 Vintage listed two Skillman ladies as current students: Madison and Mariah. They are both currently listed in the BJU Merit Pages as well.  There’s a third younger daughter playing in the band as well, but her enrollment at BJU is unknown.
So this is the “BJU Bluegrass band”? A single upperclassman Music major and a Sophomore Bible major? Does BJU teach bluegrass performance? Why are these ladies under another name now branded as “BJU Bluegrass” for Sunday morning services? If BJU doesn’t offer this as part of their curriculum, then how can they be advertising the school?
And remember again how Steve Pettit gutted the music department in the last year. He guts the music department and then takes another band brand and slaps a BJU label on it?
