Sword of Damocles
Did you know that the name of the Schneizel fortress belongs to a character from a mythology, although the narration for which it became famous is due to a legend spread by the philosopher Cicero?
"It is said that there was a courtier named Damocles who constantly flattered the tyrant. He spread that he was a great man and exalted his lifestyle. He assured that excesses in food and drink were natural to the greatness of the ruler.
Many thought that Damocles was actually envious of the tyrant. Once they met and the courtier showered the ruler with flattery. Fed up with his flattery, the sovereign offered him that they change places for a day, so that he could experience firsthand the weight of power and excess.
Damocles delightedly accepted and the next day he was very early in the government house to take the place of the tyrant. He sat on the throne and from then on was served by a host of servants who indulged his smallest whim.
Suddenly, Damocles looked up and saw that just above his head was a sharp sword, which was only supported by a horsehair. It was obvious that if that thin thread broke, his head would roll as well. Upon realizing it, he no longer enjoyed food, drink, and women. Soon after he asked to end the experiment."
There are several interpretations that can be applied to the legend of Damocles. We can think that it is a story that shows the ugly face of a life of luxury (Cicero was a Stoic philosopher and this current advocated a life free of excesses since these eventually produce suffering). We can also think that it is a criticism of the dictator who lives in constant fear of being betrayed. There are some who think that it is an allegory to death, which is always lurking and from which no one can escape. Stil, it is a story that gives us food for thought about the implications of power. In any case, today the expression "sword of Damocles" is used to designate situations in which an error can have very serious consequences or imminent dangers.
I find it curious because, back in the 20th century, John F. Kennedy said in one of his speeches: " Today, every inhabitant of this planet must contemplate the day when this planet may no longer be habitable. Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by accident or miscalculation or by madness. The weapons of war must be abolished before they abolish us." (In the fragment Kennedy refers to nuclear weapons).
It seems that Okouchi and Taniguchi took Kennedy's words at face value for their story since the Damocles is armed with several F.L.E.I.J.A warheads (which is a bomb) and is permanently hovering in the sky. Of course, here we find ourselves with the interpretation of the dictator because whoever controls Damocles controls the world based on fear, which is the essential component of dictatorships. Schneizel intended to use Damocles to achieve peace and happiness (ironic since true peace and happiness cannot be achieved through tyrannical rule and the constant threat of spaceborne weapons of mass destruction). In the end, Lelouch uses it to solidify his position and destroy any country that opposed him.
Did you already know the legend of Damocles?
