process - from learning to problem solving
(above is one of the many sites I used to try and gain more context about aspects of coding language I didn’t understand. More specifically is the ways cookies could be used to try and see if it was possible for me to use them.)
Though the more hands-on approach of codecacademy was easier for me to understand aspects of javascript than Jon Duckett’s book, it felt like I had a pile of puzzle pieces that could go together, but I had no idea where to start. I was also having a tough time figuring out what I could do locally, since I was not able to buy web space and utilize a server in that manner. After talking with Maurice about my coding troubles, he suggested to look at UX problems with food blogs to see what I could add to it. It also made more sense for me to look at it in that lens, because then I could figure out what I need to code and focus on those aspects. From there I analyzed as many food blogs as I could to figure out how they were organized and the positive and negative ways they function. I also wanted to get the opinion of people I know that frequent food blogs to get a semblance of some user testing or survey.

semester at a glance

With my background, I have a mixed bag of experiences when it comes to print and digital design. However, my skills in the digital world have a lot more shallow spots, so I want to be able to deepen those skills.
Project 1: Coding
Outcome: Recipe blog
The purpose of this project is so I can get reacquainted with code and brush up on the aspects I don’t know but will be useful to me. I want to utilize interactive aspects of code and to be able to have a printable version of each recipe. I will document by posting how the results of the lessons I complete go, post screenshots as things go right or wrong. If worse comes to worse, I’ll mock-up the website in XD to give the general idea of what I was going for.
Schedule:
Week 1: Lessons, lessons, and more lessons. Read from HTML + CSS and Javascript + jQuery by Jon Duckett.
2/10: Work on lessons from Codecacademy
2/12: Work on lessons from skillshare
Week 2: Test out code, make some wireframes
2/17: Have 3 directions of styles
2/19: Start building
Week 3: Build the website
2/24: Code and edit
2/26: Done
Project 2: E-pub design
Outcome: Cookbook
The purpose of this project is to get more acquainted with editorial design – especially in the digital format. I also want to be up-to-date on the current standards of epub design. To keep it related to the general topic of my thesis, I want to create a cookbook and potentially include the history of some of the types of foods and ingredients. I also want to take it as an opportunity to experiment with food photography. The primary goal is to learn how to use a liquid layout, but if that doesn’t work out, I’ll stick with creating the cookbook with a portrait orientation.
Schedule
Week 1: Research history of food, take some photos.
3/2: Research, write content
3/4: Sketch out photo ideas, over the weekend bake recipes and take photos
Week 2: Lessons on Skillshare/LinkedIn Learning, Start building
3/9: Have a few lessons done, practice different layouts
3/11: Sketch out layout, start building
Week 3: Finish building, have final product
3/30: Keep on working
4/1: Done
Project 3: Video Editing
Outcome: Interview about recipe/food
The purpose of this project is for me to get a firmer grasp of After Effects and Premiere Pro. I want to be more confident in my abilities to use them when I go back to the industry. I noticed that a lot of food publications and book publishers have a strong video presence, so I wanted to mix a bit of storytelling with food.
Schedule:
Week 1: Storyboard, record, lessons
4/6: Storyboard, work on lessons
4/8: Record over the weekend, more lessons
Week 2: Lessons, start editing title
4/13: Lessons, make some titles
4/15: have 3 ready to go
Week 3: Edit & finalize
4/20: have a rough edit
4/22: Done
