At GSU we are committed to improving the quality of life and fitness for all of our students and community members by providing fitness, athletic, health and wellness programs and facilities. GSU’s Recreation and Fitness Center is easily accessible as it is located right on campus and is free to current GSU students with their MyOne Card.  We also offer memberships (many at a discounted rate) to the community, alumni, students at area community colleges, and senior citizens among others.

The Rec and Fitness Center’s extensive hours of operation accommodates most schedules and the wide variety of activities is sure to suit most styles.  Our facilities include an enormous 167,000 gallon Olympic-style lap pool along with a gymnasium that has a full-sized basketball court and racquetball court. We also have free weights, exercise machines and cardiovascular equipment as well as support team sports, special events and classes designed to meet all of our members’ interests and fitness levels. 

For an additional fee, we offer exceptional swim lessons for the area that are geared toward adult learners as well as for children.  We provide safety and rescue skill education at each level.  Our fitness classes include a water exercise class, Zumba, personal fitness training and other courses.  Personal training is done as a customized one-on-one fitness program with a certified personal trainer. GSU’s Exceptional Nursing Programs

When you are ready to take your career to the next level, Governors State invites you to  learn more about our Department of Nursing.  Whether you want to earn your BSN, MSN, FNP or DNP, we have excellent programs and a dedicated faculty to help you get there.

Our RN to BSN Completion Program is completely online.  It is designed for RNs with an Associate’s Degree or Diploma in Nursing and an active RN license.  The program incorporates the latest recommendations of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the national nursing organization whose exclusive purpose is to establish quality standards for baccalaureate and higher-degree nursing education programs.

GSU’s Master of Science in Nursing – Nursing Administration Concentration is offered to accommodate schedules of working nurses and is delivered in a blend of on-campus and online course work.  The program combines an established core curriculum in Nursing with an innovative specialty curriculum that covers all aspects of administration and leadership including marketing, negotiation strategies, informatics, outcomes management and innovation.

Another program from the department is our Master of Science in Nursing — Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Healthcare degree.  This advanced practice Clinical Nurse Specialist concentration prepares students to provide care to adults in a variety of settings and serve as expert educators and consultants to healthcare institutions.    

The M.S. in Nursing programs also offers a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Concentration that prepares students to provide primary care to patients across the lifespan and in a variety of primary care settings.  In addition, we have a Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate that prepares Advanced Practice Nurses who already have an MSN degree, to meet the requirements for licensure as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program focuses on one of the following advanced professional practice specialties: Community Behavior, Direct Practice, Leadership/Administration, and Practitioner/Educator.  The DNP has an emphasis on the care of vulnerable populations.

GSU’s Receives National Award

On March 15, 2015, Governors State University’s President, Elaine Maimon, received the 2015 American Council on Education/Fidelity Investments Award for Institutional Transformation on behalf of the university.  The award is given in recognition to universities and colleges, that in a “period of great change in higher education have, responded to challenges in innovative and creative ways that allows the institution to thrive.”  

The award has two categories, one for schools with a student population 5,000 and over, and one for those with a population below 5,000.  Governors State won for institutions under 5,000 students.  The award for over 5,000 students went to Georgia State University. Both winning schools will receive $10,000.

According to the American Council on Education (ACE), the Award for Institutional Transformation “recognizes a college or university that raised, rallied or repurposed its resources to achieve dramatic and successful changes that allowed it to fulfill its mission over a relatively brief period of time.”  They state that the changes can entail academic, cultural, financial, or teaching/learning.  In addition changes can be in response to threats to the schools viability and used as an opportunity to achieve a higher level of excellence.  

Recent changes at GSU that contributed to winning the award include adding a freshman class in 2014 and continuing to increase enrollment in our Dual Degree Program (DDP).  The DDP, a unique partnership between GSU and Chicagoland community colleges, now includes 17 area community colleges and provides full-time students with a way to earn quality, accessible, and affordable associate and bachelor's degrees.

In regard to the award, GSU’s Maimon said, “We're thrilled about this because it's national recognition for the fact that we have a good business plan and have been doing all the right things,"  She went on to say "It's good for Illinois and for all Illinois public universities."  Carol Schneider, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, said in a release, "This richly deserved award for Governors State recognizes the university's pace-setting success in creating an educationally meaningful pathway to student success (that) connects 17 two-year institutions with the university."

Helping Hand for Freshman at GSU

Before we know it, the 2015 Fall term will be here and will mark Governors State’s second year as a 4-year undergraduate university.  As such, we are continuing in our efforts to prepare GSU’s incoming freshman class to succeed in their new college life.  One quick and easy way we do this is through our information packed website that can help answer all kinds of questions or point you in the right direction to find someone who can.  

We know that it is important for freshman to get off to a good start and this is why we require them to attend a New Student Orientation session that is offered throughout the summer.  Many of our sessions consist of a full day program with an optional Early Arrival program for students and families that would like to join a fun filled evening before coming to orientation.

At orientation, you are given the chance to interact with other in-coming students, faculty members and administrators. While on campus, you will learn a lot more about our student organizations, activities, volunteer programs, residential housing and extensive student support services.  You and your family will tour our beautiful campus and get a good idea of what student life is like at Governors State.

Take Advantage of GSU’s Writing Center

Regardless of your major, the ability to write well is important for any college student’s academic success.  That is why GSU offers several different methods to help develop and improve your writing skills that include our resource links, which you will find on the website, as well as our in person and online Writing Center.  

GSU’s services help you to organize so you are able to get off to a good start on writing a paper.  Help is provided with research papers that require A.P.A. (American Psychological Association) document style writing and there is a template available to use for your research paper.  

If you are struggling with your writing skills, the Writing Center offers an online or in person forty-five minute, one-on-one appointment with a consultant.  During the private consultation, they do not edit or proofread papers, but rather supply helpful links for making revisions and proofreading a paper.  They do help with grammar.  The Center’s services are useful at any stage of writing from brainstorming ideas to reviewing a final draft.  Just keep in mind that it is the consultant’s intention is to help students become better writers, not to write for them.

When you send one of your papers to a Writing Center consultant for revision suggestions or to ask a question, you will receive a response within 24 hours, 7 days a week.  The consultant will suggest revisions for the top two or three problems with your paper and send it back to you to revise. You can then make the changes and send the paper back again for another review if you wish.  

The Center helps you find a focus statement that is appropriate for the writing situation and helps you organize a first draft to create a logical order for the paper.  You are taught how to recognize and identify aspects of your writing that need clarification and expansion, such as the need for additional supporting details, explanation, or definition for the reader to understand what the writer already knows.  In addition, you can learn how to format the writing in a style that is appropriate to your field of study, such as APA or MLA, and to properly incorporate outside sources in the text.

Are You Prepared to Take an Online Course?

Educators caution that if you are thinking about taking your first online course, you need to make sure you are serious about the commitment.  Online learning can be much different than courses taken in a traditional classroom setting and some students simply are not prepared to deal with an online environment.  

Study.com cites research that shows online learning requires a certain amount of self-discipline and motivation.  A person must be able to maintain a schedule and manage their time well. In addition students need to remember that they will be working without any face-to-face interaction from the teacher or fellow students.  To successfully participate in an online course, you will need to be comfortable doing most of your communication in writing.  Also be sure to read the syllabus carefully so you understand what the course work consists of and whether it meets your educational goals.

To get prepared, check with your school regarding the technical requirements for the online class and make sure you have the equipment you need.  Next, think about setting aside a dedicated place to study at home and get the supplies you need to help stay organized.  Furthermore, get familiar with your school’s website and virtual campus by taking the training or orientation for the online learning system.

We are living in an increasingly technological society, and as a result, the demand for computer scientists continues to grow.  According to a Motley Fool article regarding recent college graduates, it states, “If you are one of the lucky recipients of the nearly 146,000 computer science and engineering undergraduate degrees, you can rest assured that you will have a much higher success rate in your job search than some of your peers.”

The B.S. in Computer Science degree opens up many career doors and most of them come with a very good salary.  At the time of the article (June 2014), the job aggregator, Indeed.com, had 77,504, software developer jobs listed.  Also the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects another 222,600 software developer jobs will be added to the economy by 2022, which may actually be low if the current growth trends continue.   The median salary for software developers in 2012 was $93,000 according to the BLS. 

Computer software engineers are also in demand.  Indeed.com showed more than 31,000 vacancies posted with salaries that averaged around $99,000 annually.  Graduates will also find information security analyst jobs are growing very rapidly, and the BLS predicts a growth of 37% over the next eight years.

We are honored to be recent recipients of two prestigious national awards for our Dual Degree Program (DDP).  One of the awards was from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).   When handing out the award, the AASCU stated, "With degree completion a national priority, GSU has developed a comprehensive approach for transfer students with the Dual Degree Program that increases the number of students earning both an associate and a bachelor's degree.”   The National Resource Center for the First Year Experience and Students in Transition gave GSU the other award.  

So what is GSU’s Dual Degree Program?  The DDP is a partnership between GSU and twelve area Chicagoland community colleges that offer full-time students with an excellent opportunity to earn quality, accessible and affordable associate and bachelor’s degrees.  It is easy to enroll in the DDP and students are under no obligation to attend GSU nor will it limit future transfer options.  For those students who decide to go on to GSU, you are provided with many advantages that are not open to non-DDP students.

What are the advantages to being a DDP student?  To start with admission to GSU is guaranteed although keep in mind that some programs such as nursing, social work, and art have limited enrollment.  The next advantage is your GSU tuition rate in locked in when you enroll in the DDP and the rate is good for two years after you start at GSU (must be full-time and in good academic standing). 

There are several other advantages one of our Transfer Specialists can explain in more detail or see our website.  Once you are a part of the DDP, and want to apply to GSU, your Transfer Specialist can help you to develop a plan to complete your degrees as quickly as possible. 

So who is eligible to become a DDP student?  Any student who is attending one of our partner community colleges full-time and has already completed 12-45 credit hours.  Also we require that students be in good academic standing at their respective college and must complete their associate degree in five or fewer semesters (plus summers).   Furthermore you will have to enroll in the university to pursue your bachelor’s degree immediately after graduating from the DDP community college.

Over the last several years, Governors State has experienced some exciting changes.  Along with the new on-campus residence, Prairie Place, transitioning to a full four-year university, we also remodeled our science facilities recently.  GSU students are now learning in one of the most modern and advanced university science environments in the region. 

  The large 60,000 square foot, three-year renovation and redesign project was started in October of 2011 and the project cost $22.6 million.  The state-of-the-art classrooms and labs are used by our biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, nursing, communication disorders, occupational therapy, and physical therapy students. The new facilities allow us to better train students with the rigorous academics and extensive hands-on experiences they need to compete regionally as well as on a national and global scale.

  We also completely renovated the University Library and computer lab.  We encourage any new students to come take a look at The Cube (Computer Connection Central).  It is located within the library, and offers a large, beautiful space to read, study and conduct research.

  The scope of the renovations consisted of approximately 76,000 square feet (7,100 m2) of space.  Crews replaced HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and lighting systems.  Any outmoded infrastructure and equipment was replaced with up-to-the-date facilities and equipment that is more energy-efficient and meets current codes and regulations.  The renovation adheres to GSU’s commitment to continue to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and helps to move us forward in our goal of becoming Illinois’ "greenest" university.

  Our Division of Science is part of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and trains students with the scientific knowledge to develop innovative strategies to solve problems and cultivate a lifelong interest in science-related fields.  Our teaching strategies focus on field studies, laboratory methods, internships and joint projects with industries to create solutions to scientific and business challenges.
