Rondônia cocoa adopts first-ever production traceability platform in Brazil
Developed by the Cocoa Innovation Center and startup Trace Tech, the technology was tested in a pilot project in southern Bahia before reaching the north of the country

The Cocoa Innovation Center (CIC) has partnered with the startup Trace Tech to develop a pioneering traceability platform designed to bring greater transparency to Brazilian chocolate production. Known as the Brazilian Cocoa Traceability System (SBRC), the technology integrates georeferencing and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to monitor the supply chain and ensure that cocoa is not grown in areas affected by illegal deforestation.
Currently, 51 small family farmers in Rondônia are using the platform. Registration costs start at R$750 per producer but can reach up to R$4,280 depending on the size of the property.
An initiative of the Southern Bahia Science and Technology Park, the CIC analyzes cocoa beans to support market development. The rollout in Rondônia was made possible through a partnership with Dengo Chocolates—an early adopter of the tool since 2024—and Sebrae, the service for very small and small businesses.
According to Cristiano Villela, CIC’s scientific director, the next goal is to attract large-scale players to expand adoption. “We want to bring in companies like Cargill, Olam, and Barry Callebaut, which together process 95% of Brazil’s cocoa. If they see the value in this tool, we’ll be able to scale it significantly,” says Mr. Villela.
