…and that’s surely an undercount. It’s hard to overstate just how disastrous this has been for the workers who actually make games and for the health of the industry as a whole.

More layoffs means more competition for fewer open positions. More competition means lower wages and burnout. Burnout and lack of positions force workers out of the industry.

All that talent, gone. And those that remain still suffer! The work piles up in fewer desks, you don’t know if your next. These are poor conditions for working, let alone for the creativity and care needed to create games.

This year has been full of amazing games from Hi-Fi Rush to Armored Core VI.

Unfortunately, the workers creating these games have seen the worst layoffs in decades.

We’ve lost our livelihoods, our colleagues, and our passion. We’re forced to accept lower pay or leave the industry, joining an exodus of talent that grows by the day.

This year has been nothing less than a crisis for the industry.

But we can fight this. Over the last two years, workers have been organizing into unions to defend themselves, and building worker cooperatives to create the spaces we deserve.

We need to keep up the pressure to prevent the collapse of the real industry: the workers that make it.

Generative AI is built on the stolen art, writing, voices, and even bodies of artists and actors, and companies aim to use it to replace them.

Even programmers that work on AI aren’t safe. Code-generating AI is here, and threatens to make junior positions even scarcer.

And while these systems have been pushed to replace labor, workers have still needed to fix the generated material, because it’s not that good.

I have a confession; I am one of those people who loves to plan networking events but doesn’t love participating myself. After a visit to the Go West Conference in Edmonton for event professionals last month, I thought this week we could discuss how to make it a teeny bit easier at the next corporate event you attend. This will involve a combination of social skills, genuine interest, and strategic planning. Just like The Skills That Every Planner Needs to Succeed – Here are some tips to help you make the most of your networking experience:

Set clear goals:

Define your objectives for the event. Whether it’s making a certain number of new connections, finding potential clients, or learning about industry trends, having clear goals will give your networking purpose.

Research beforehand:

Learn about the event, its attendees, and speakers in advance. This will help you identify key people you want to connect with and topics of conversation.

Prepare an elevator pitch:

Craft a concise and engaging introduction that highlights who you are, what you do, and what makes you unique. This will make it easier for others to understand your background and interests.

Initiate conversations:

Don’t wait for others to approach you. Take the initiative to introduce yourself and start conversations. Approach small groups rather than larger ones to make interactions more personal.

Active listening / finding common ground:

Pay close attention to what others are saying. Show genuine interest by asking thoughtful questions and actively engaging in the conversation. This helps build stronger connections.

Klein (2017) explains how some scholars claim that "communication systems are based on profit-making and serve those in positions of power". This is aligned with how I feel about much of the media I consume, as I can often identify who may have influenced it without digging too deep. There are many obvious examples, such as product placements in film/television, repeated advertisements from Amazon in one sitting rather than more diverse commercials, and how the parties with the most money can spam the most political ads on Facebook, therefore influencing a bigger audience. When reading The Corporation by Joel Bakan (2004), I learned about how corporations manipulated holiday advertisements to target children into wearing their parents down to make purchases. But the most disturbing part of that chapter, was learning that corporations can start advertising through schools, by investing money into education and slowly influencing generations of consumers (Bakan, 2004).

I think about this a lot when I am consuming media, even something as simple as a new movie in the theatre. Who invested in the production of this film? Did they suggest cuts, or improvements, to drive a narrative they wish to promote onto our screens before the cameras even roll? I can't think of how many times I have seen a shocking headline only to find who published or sponsored the story, and realized the credibility was non-existent. Or to see a colourful, clean and appealing advertisement for clothes, appearing reputable and of quality, only to find in a few clicks that the brand is highly unethical and steals designs from minorities. I can't watch a movie, click an ad, read a story, or make a purchase without the knowledge that the more mainstream it is, the more unethical my consumption likely is. When my guard is down, how likely is it that those behind that specific media were just more successful in hiding their influence?

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been testing those traditional boundaries of Canadian politics, however — most notably with the Alberta Sovereignty Act, which was caused by many head explosions among the nation’s constitutional experts — to the point where some conservatives wish to disavow her. Conservatives understand and respect institutions and advance change incrementally within them, veteran conservative strategist Ken Boessenkool and the University of Alberta political scientist Jared Wesley wrote recently at The Line. Conservatives understand and respect institutions; they adhere to facts and expertise; they are “realists”; and they believe in limited government, both in size and in temperament. Boessenkool and Wesley argue that Smith, by contrast, “shows little understanding or respect for the rules and norms that guide our democracy”; nods to “health-care quackery,” “conspiracy theories” and “oddly Putinesque talking points on the invasion of Ukraine”; and has boosted spending and installed “the largest cabinet in the history of the province.” Edmonton lawyer and former UCP staffer Karamveer Lalh defended Smith’s defense, arguing that her “libertarian populism” is a perfectly good form of conservatism — and one Albertans should know from Ralph Klein's days. People could donate up to $5,000 to as many candidates as they want under changes proposed in a new municipal election financing bill introduced in the Alberta legislature Wednesday.

Bill 29, the Local Authorities Election Amendment Act, allows an individual with enough money to donate to as many municipal or school trustee candidates as they want in any jurisdiction across the province.

The bill proposes the removal of limits on spending by third-party advertisers outside the local elections campaign period that runs from May 1 to election day in October. The bill also proposes removing the requirement for candidates to disclose their donors prior to election day.

Existing legislation caps donations so one individual can donate only $4,000 in total during a campaign.

The bill still bans candidate donations from corporations and unions.
