Most women want to appear beautiful in front of everyone, but if they can't be beautiful in real life, they can still live virtually online. With today's advanced technology, turning a woman into a completely different woman is an extremely simple task. Known as the first online beauty tools, Snapchat and Instagram have successfully created filters and now play a crucial role of popular culture that girls have come to rely on. According to a report, 76% of Snapchat users use AR filters daily, and 600 million people use them on Facebook or Instagram monthly (Bhatt, 2020).

These filters provide the function of changing one or more features of a person's body and face when they take a photo, it can make skin brighter, the face smaller, the eyes bigger, etc. In addition, some filters can also incorporate stickers or effects, such as dog face or flower wreath filters (once very popular among young people). Increasingly, filters are becoming more diverse and upgraded to make them look more natural and real. Therefore, this situation is increasingly increasing as young people become too virtual and always have to depend on filters, losing their true selves. Social networks have become so virtual that people easily get lost and don't know where to put their trust.

There is a girl shared "I remember the day the ‘beauty’ filter came out on Snapchat – the one that ever-so-slightly retouches skin, narrows noses, and gives doe eyes. The filter just barely changed my appearance, but changed it enough for me to notice that I looked ‘better’." She used the program differently after, like others, growing acclimated to the filtered snapshot of herself: "Gone were the days of using Snapchat to send ugly selfies." (Peres Martins 2017: 20). Therefore, it can be seen that next to the "beautiful side" that AR filter brings to users is still an "ugly side". Users' self-perception and, consequently, mental health can be affected by virtually altering their look (Javornik et al., 2021; Lee & Lee, 2021). "Selfie Hypomania" is a similar disorder where people feel physically disfigured when they take selfies that enhance their appearance and struggle with low self-esteem. (Maymone, Vashi, & Rajanala, 2018). AR filters may make this worse because they alter virtual objects in real time and with more realism. It is known to drive some individuals into cosmetic surgery in extreme circumstances (Hunt, 2019). However, social media may also have a good impact on mental health when used to express personal traits that are concealed or to help people figure out who they are (Choi & Sung, 2018; Yau, Marder, & O'Donohoe, 2020). As a result, there are several ways in which AR face filters may impact mental health.

Despite their playful appeal, some users express concerns about the implications of these virtual makeovers, which often feature elements such as contoured skin, plump lips slicked with a matte color, thick, flawless eyebrows, and cheekbones glowing with highlighter — it's that airbrushed look that seems to only exist online. Snapchat released Lenses in 2015 which began with goofy filters of dog ears and flower crowns but it has since introduced a way to see a different you with a slimmer nose, larger eyes or lips and a sharper jawline (Barker 2020, p. 207). These beautifying filters have since spread to every other social media platform. They have sparked controversy because the 'pretty' filter doesn't add anything new to your face, it just changes your features to fit the heteronormative standard of 'pretty' which is obviously very damaging to one's self-esteem. These filters produce unrealistic and skewed social expectations of women's bodies, which are impossible to naturally achieve in the first place (Coy-Dibley 2016). This has limited the ways people can authentically show themselves online.  It has also promoted the homogenous standards of feminine beauty that are created for a male and Western-dominated society, rolling back on any diversity that had previously been developed (Coy-Dibley 2016). Crawford (2023) discusses how filters have used people of colour's features as trends. She says that it's frustrating that the "exact features [she] sought to change growing up are features that white women appropriate now". Filters would make her nose and jaw smaller but make her lips bigger which she used to be made of fun for but the rise of lip filler has increasingly grown popular among white women. She worries that these Eurocentric beauty standards are going to make young girls of colour grow up insecure because of these filters as well as the lack of media representation already.

With a simple touch, users can "correct" (Barker 2020, p. 208)their faces and have been taking these new faces to cosmetic surgeons. Once upon a time patients would bring magazine covers to get procedures to look like the hottest celebrity at the time but they are now seeking consultations to "look like the filtered versions of themselves" (Rajanala, Maymone & Vashi 2018). This has been named 'Snapchat Dysmorphia' after multiple plastic surgeons had observed many clients "losing perspectives on what [they] actually look like" due to Snapchat and Instagram filters (Brucculieri 2018)

The Not So Fun Side of Face Filters ...
Instagram Filters also known as Augmented Reality Filters are defined as “an interactive experience that allows us to put digital objects into a real-world environment”. (Raffaelli, 2023). This has been a recent trend growing on different social medias, with now Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger and TikTok all having the filter option (Filterious, 2023). With Snapchat being the original platform for face filters and A/R, popularity surrounding these filters arose worldwide with their release in 2016. (Joanna, 2022). After the success of Snapchats implication of these filters, Instagram released similar filters however a year later midway through 2017. (Pepe, 2022).
The sociological impacts that Instagrams Augmented Reality Filters have on young women are evident. Beside there being the positives of having the ability to change hair colours or add tattoos without permanent consequences. The negatives outweigh these, with effects including an overall lower Mood, self-objectification, negative self comparison and trends in plastic surgery (Rivas, 2022).
A lot of users particularly on TikTok aren't wearing any makeup whilst filming their videos and are instead seen using filters. Author Jessica Barker mentions how “Snapchat filters have become the modern-age version of makeup”, (J.Barker, 2018 - Page 211). She also mentioned how “Sculpting the face with makeup provides a sense of security for those wishing to retain control over their image, especially in an age when it is possible for nearly anyone to take another’s photo, digitally manipulate it and publish it online”, (J.Barker, 2018 - page 211). This brings in the idea that it has become normalised to edit photos before posting them online, as a way to control the image.
An example of these filters creating serious effect on society, is Snapchat Dysmorphia Theory. This theory, involves patients of cosmetic surgeons, seeking out certain surgery's to look like filtered versions of themselves (Ranjanala, Maymore & Vashi, 2018). This shows the true impact that these filters are having and brings in the idea of 'ideal beauty' standards controlling some of society.

To sum up this blog, I believe that face filters have reached a point of trends in beauty and plastic surgery and hopefully, as technology arises, these trends will too. Possibly A/R and face filters will be used for a better purpose in the future.

Week 7: Face Filters

It is no surprise that beauty or face filters have become a norm when scrolling through social media sites such as Instagram or Facebook, and with the pandemic lockdown in 2020, this has only amplified screen time online. Face filters apply “virtual accessories and modify facial features, enabling users to incorporate augmented reality into their daily practice” (Barker 2017). Although, many face filters can be fun and entertaining and used in a positive and comical sense, society is beginning to see more beautification edits using apps like Facetune, which are becoming detrimental to our self-confidence and mental health.
An interesting quote pulled from a Women’s Health article (Rodulfo 2020) by 21-year-old Alec Bayot stated that:
The ‘Instagram face’ def makes me think of getting lip fillers… it’s crazy how much it makes me rethink my appearance.
Bayot also used the words “digital Play-Doh” to describe how editing apps allow users to mold, pinch and add volume to wherever they desire, and this process, despite seeming harmless in the beginning, can easily spiral into obsessive tendencies. “Nowadays women not only feel pressured to compete with socially generated beauty standards, but to compete with their own image too…to attain the unattainable” (Coy-Dibley 2015, p. 2). According to Leon Festinger’s social comparison theory (1954), “when unable to evaluate ourselves directly, we seek to satisfy this need for self-evaluation through comparison with other people” (Grogan, 2008: 118) and this, paired with the heavy use of face filters may lead to the manifestation of digitised dysmorphia. Coy-Dibley (2015, p. 2) defines that digitised dysmorphia is “shaped collectively by societal pressures, constructs of beauty and the technology presently available to attain these standards.”
Whilst scrolling through Facebook this week, I came across a video uploaded by VICE Lifethat highlights this concept of digitised dysmorphia through face filters. I found it very interesting that “previously, patients would bring images of celebrities to their consultations... [however, now they are] seeking out cosmetic surgery to look like filtered versions of themselves” (Rajanala et al. 2018). Overall, beauty filters have contributed to digitised dysmorphia over time by placing an unattainable pressure upon society and particularly women, to look a certain way in order to conform to today’s beauty standards. Although, this is the sad reality, I don’t think face filters will be seeing a decline in user participation anytime soon.

week 7: Beauty Filters
If you were to log into Instagram or Snapchat today, there is a very high chance that you would see someone using a filter. It is a common practice, on these social media platforms especially, to use a face filter to change, alter or enhance features of the face by simply using this technology. Although filters may be seen as purely for entertainment and fun, they are actually causing harmful issues in regard to self-confidence and “digitised dysmorphia” (Coy-Dibley 2016). Digitised dysmorphia is a term used by Isabelle Coy-Dibley in her article “Digitized dysmorphia of the female body: The re/disfigurement of the image”, to describe a body dysmorphia that is “shaped collectively by societal pressures, constructs of beauty and the technology presently available to attain these standards” (Coy-Dibley 2016, p.2). A filter is an example of one of the technologies as it is available to attain and create the desired facial features that societal constructs have pressured females to appear with. Some of the most common changes a beauty filter makes to one’s face is blurring out pores, enlarging eyes, slimming nose, sharper jawline, longer eyelashes and bigger lips (Rodulfo 2020). This is clearly outlining the beauty standards that are placed on women today and how these filters are emphasising these standards further. 
This has even changed the process of getting plastic and cosmetic surgery. Before filters and beauty apps such as Facetune, patients seeking surgery “would bring images of celebrities to their consultations to emulate their attractive features…patients (are now) seeking out cosmetic surgery to look like filtered versions of themselves” (Rajanala, Maymone and Vashi 2018). Although this may be seen as beneficial for surgeons as they have a clearer image of what their patient wants, it has actually caused further issues with some patient requests simply being impossible, such as bigger eyes. Therefore, filters on social media have contributed to digitised dysmorphia, as people, in particular women, are compelled to look a certain why by society in which using these filters further articulates modern beauty standards.

BDD: What is it?
Society has always been fascinated with beauty standards. People’s perception of beauty is influenced by societal factors and also nature itself. This influence and fascination with beauty can lead to dissatisfaction with one’s appearance which is commonplace in contemporary society. It is possible for some people to rid themselves of these dissatisfactions through cosmetic surgery which can improve self-esteem and self-image. However, it is possible for someone to be too dissatisfied with their image that nothing they do will change that dissatisfaction. According to Dr. Neelam A. Vashi in his article, “Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)… is the impairing preoccupation with a nonexistent or minimal flaw in appearance” (2016). It is this obsession with a perceived flaw that can take control over an individual’s life which can have mental, sociological, and physical effects. There is not just one form of BDD either, there are multiple subgroups/types.
