Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault says while Alberta is legally allowed to withdraw from the Canada Pension Plan, doing so would be a “one way ticket,” with no chance of return. Alberta’s UCP has been mulling the idea of leaving the CPP and forming its own pension plan since 2020, but Premier Danielle Smith recently took the next step by releasing a report about a plan to do so and saying public feedback would determine the need for a referendum. Boissonnault told CTV’s Question Period host Vassy Kapelos in an interview airing Sunday that once a province chooses to withdraw from the CPP, it kicks off a timeline laid out in the 1965 legislation and can’t be undone. “If Albertans decided a referendum to pull out of the CPP, they will be able to do that, but it's a one way ticket,” said Boissonnault, who is also an Alberta MP. “You don't get to come back, that's also very clear in this legislation,” he also said, adding he believes Alberta’s withdrawal would be “destabilizing.”

#ive done maybe 200 problems on cf maybe another 50 or so in lc which feels like a lot but also very little
This is a lot! At the end of the day a lot of it is a volume game and that's a very good start.
#also my friend's been telling me to ditch cpp and take up python for ages now#shes gonna be so smug about this 😔
First, disclaimer: you should interview in whatever language you're most comfortable with (unless the company tells you otherwise in advance, but that's pretty rare). If you spend some time with Python and decide you hate it, stick with C++.
Personally I like Python for interviewing for a few reasons - it's concise, there's very little syntax to make an embarrassing mistake about under pressure, and your interviewer will undoubtedly understand your code. If I whip out Rust and my interviewer has never seen it before, that's potentially going to get confusing, but Python is basically just pseudocode that runs.
Oh I guess my biggest question would be how do you do leetcode (824 problems ). like do you go by tags or one of those leetcode sheets.
Standard disclaimer that I'm a freak who got really into this after I finished interviewing and got my job offer, but I found the best method on Leetcode was just to do virtual contests (this is when you "replay" an old contest).
Contests on Leetcode are great - they have (typically) one easy question as a warmup, two mediums to toy with, and a hard to really mess with you. With your current rating I wouldn't fuck around with the hards until you feel like you're getting both mediums consistently, but it's still a nice difficulty progression, and virtual contests are recorded which lets you track your progress.
Back when I was in peak sicko grinding mode I would fully solve through 2-3 leetcode contests a day. This is wildly unnecessary and I would not recommend it.
However! If you want to specialize in interviews, forget all of that and just look at a list. Here's one I found that lists common Amazon interview questions. Similar lists exist for most other large companies (just google "[company] interview question list" and look through results on leetcode and reddit), and going through them will get you there.
It won't raise your rating as much as doing contests (contests and interviews are overlapping but ultimately different skillsets) but it will more reliably get you a job, and that matters a lot more than making a number go up online.
Real job interviews for new grads will very rarely ask you Hard leetcode questions. If you get to the point where you feel like you can get Mediums with some reliability, that's more than enough.
hey congrats on reaching CM (? wanted to find the post where you mention that to confirm but tumblr search misbehaves). was curious as to how many problems you've solved on cf? I primarily picked it up cause ik it helped friends with interview stuff but I'm 2 months in stuck at ~1200 so wondering if I should be doing things differently. on one hand most problems <1400 are greedy or math so I worry an actual interview will be more "algorithmic" and I'll be unprepared (maybe leetcode is better in this regard?). on the other hand it's soo much easier to fantasise about being good at cp than actually practicing. so. anyway wondering if you had any advice on this? CM in one year does not sound like the journey of your average cf-er. congrats again. cheers!
Thank you!
(full disclosure: I've kind of fallen off with competitive programming - I haven't competed on codechef since January and codeforces/leetcode since April)
My solving totals, ratings, and number of contests are:
Leetcode: 824 problems, 2571 rating, 41 contests
Codeforces: 69 problems, 2000 rating, 14 contests
Codechef: 32 problems, 2046 rating, 4 contests
If you're looking for interview prep I would skip codeforces. Leetcode problems are closer to what you'll get in interviews, and their contests are much less of a time commitment. I also code in Rust on CF/CC and Python on Leetcode, and I much prefer to take interviews in Python.
If you snoop around a bit on reddit and the leetcode forums, you can often find lists of problems people have seen at a specific company's interviews to get a flavor of what you're up against. I really recommend this - the problem I struggled with the most in getting my current job was on one such list for my company and I wish I'd gone through the list. This was before I got really good, though.
I think my rapid growth was fueled by three things:
I did math competitions all the way through college that have a similar skillset
My college classes taught a lot of competitive programming concepts (I learned what a SegTree was in class!)
I had a period of 5 months between graduating and starting my job where I was unemployed and highly motivated, and I did a ton of grinding during that period. Most of my leetcode solves are from that time
If you're looking to improve but don't have a ton of time to burn, here's the regimen I recommended to another asker:

Instagram whistleblowers reveal California College Republican hate speech in chatroom
Screenshots from a Discord server attributed to a statewide California College Republicans (CCR) chat exposed misogynistic, racist, antisemitic comments and threats of violence from various CCR members, including members from Cal Poly Pomona’s chapter.
A fallout within California’s collegiate Republican Party due to differing opinions caused CCR chapters to de-charter and form a new organization in 2019, the California Federation of College Republicans (CFCR). The split came after CCR published a 10-page platform that attacked university funding of birth control and abortion, the legitimizing of transgender people, and institutional support of Mexican and Muslim student organizations. The extremist platform claimed that members of the LGBT+ community were “murderous and degenerate.”
This bled into CPP’s own College Republicans and in Spring 2020, Aaron Santana Ruiz, president of CPP’s College Republicans switched the campus’ charter from the CFCR to CCR.
Instagram user, “abusiveccr,” who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, reached out to The Poly Post on Feb. 4 with screenshots of messages including two accounts alleged to belong to Santana-Ruiz and fourth-year chemical engineering student, Baron Boghosian.
Many of the user “Boghosian’s” posts include selfies of Baron Boghosian.
The same account, under a revised name “Big Gorilla”, also posted a video with the accompanying comment, “watch this you Jews” to the Discord server.
The video shows Baron Boghosian and others driving around during Halloween 2020, including on the empty CPP campus, shouting statements supportive of former President Donald Trump and ending with the group eating pizza.
On Nov. 6, 2020, the same account, posted numerous comments inciting violence.
According to the CPP Republicans code of conduct, “Grounds for removal and/or suspension of an organization member(s) are appropriate if and only if student behavior is not consistent with the California Polytechnic University of Pomona student conduct and discipline code.”
When asked why more reports had not been made, user “disenchantedccrmember” said, “I don’t think anything through CCR would happen just because most of these guys are in their minds, at least, all on the same side. They all share similar beliefs. They don’t like Jews. They don’t like people of color. They think women need to just be at home in the kitchen, so I think if any sort of action was to come, it would come through the schools. Probably through a mission of conduct at the very least…People who have brought up concerns have either been kicked out or they’re blacklisted, and they basically cannot climb up the ladders.”
User “abusiveccr” responded similarly.
“I do want to have a career in politics, and they wouldn’t like this … a lot of the people have connections with all the offices so that could spread.”
Instagram user “_alxlcastilo” commented under every photo “abusiveccr” posted.
Alex Castillo, CPP student and alleged user of “_alxlcastilo”, did not respond to requests for comment.
CCR member, Stephen Miller, had multiple screenshots leaked with his name attached. Because of this, he reached out to user “abusiveccr”.
According to Miller, he was invited to join CCR by Loyola CCR president and CCR state chair, William Donahue.
Miller said that many of the screenshots are old and, at his request, the individuals were “purged from the chat” by William Donahue. He added that even though the messages were his, the photos of the chats are “taken out of context.”
“I know that a lot of things were recently deleted on our discord because a lot of people were scared that their comments were getting leaked out,” Miller said. “People started talking about it, and then other people started running to delete certain messages that they were afraid could be construed the wrong way. Some of them, I wouldn’t blame them. They had no context and they were 100% wrong.”
According to Miller, CCR holds individuals accountable and that a decision to remove someone from the Discord server depends “on the severity of the comments they made.”
“We try to be nonconfrontational and not hostile about it,” Miller said. “Often times you can tell when someone is joking about something. They wouldn’t joke about something that was serious, obviously.”
According to “abusiveccr”, on Nov. 10, the user “Boghosian” was removed from the server after disrespectful comments toward Arielle Spotswood, a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and current co-chair of CCR.
Spotswood did not respond to The Poly Post request for comment.
When asked for comment, Boghosian said he has “no connection with CCR at all,” and claimed to vote for the Democratic Party. He added that he never had a Discord account and the profile depicting his name, along with the chats, are “completely false and fraudulent.”
Additionally, sources say the account named “Chancellor Santana”, allegedly that of Santana Ruiz, frequently posted in Discord endorsing Nick Fuentes, a 22-year-old far-right podcaster known for pushing white nationalist and anti-Semitic views onto younger listeners. Followers of Fuentes and Patrick Casey, the leader of the United States neo-Nazi group American Identity Movement, are called “Groypers.”
In January 2019, Fuentes compared the Holocaust to a “cookie baking operation.” According to Instagram user “disenchantedccrmember”, the icon next to Santana’s name is in reference to these statements. When reprimanded for the action, Santana Ruiz changed the image to a pizza.
User “disenchatedccrmember” added that they felt the need to create the whistleblower account to shed light on the controversy.
“We’ve reported them to even their advisor. We’ve reported to Michael Donahue … who is their advisor at Cal Poly Pomona and he said nothing, he’s done nothing,” said “disenchantedccrmember.”
Initially, Michael Donahue agreed to meet with The Poly Post, but on Feb. 10 rescinded the interview in an emailed statement.
“Due to your inquiry, I have investigated this matter with the concerned Cal Poly students and state organization. I have spoken with the Cal Poly Pomona College Republicans President, Aaron, and Baron, (who is in my senior design class at Cal Poly). As it stands, both Baron and Aaron have categorically denied these allegations. Furthermore, Baron is not a member of CPP College Republicans, nor is he a member of CCR,” Donahue stated, “I have found no evidence to support the claims that you have purported. As you know, anyone can change their name and picture on Discord. Anyone can create a new account or server with any name associated to it. Due to this design, as I understand it, there is no way to determine the identity of the person(s) who authored these posts.”
In a Feb. 8 emailed statement to the Poly Post, Santana Ruiz wrote, “While I do have an Instagram, I do not have a Discord. When I looked into these supposed chats that were ‘leaked’ it appears that they come from some social media application called Discord. I have never used Discord and the account is obviously fraudulent. The images registered to the account are not me and it’s frustrating that someone would use my name and an image of a cookie to slander me. (I’m not sure if that’s an attack on me for being mixed race).”
According to Kyle Shulz, former president of CPP Republicans, during the end of his term and under the administration of Santana Ruiz, a mass email subject, “College Republicans at Cal Poly Pomona: Hangout Meeting (Fri. 1/29/21 @ 6-9PM)” was sent to all members with links to both a private CPP Republicans Discord as well as the CCR Discord.
The CPP Republican Bylaws’ article H states that the president, “Shall be the official representative of this organization at all club involved events and activities.” The bylaws have since been removed from CPP Republican’s MyBar, but can be found here.
The server violates Discord community guidelines. The comments may also violate the student code of conduct policy at CPP under item 7, “Conduct that threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person within or related to the University community, including physical abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, or sexual misconduct.”
In an emailed statement to The Poly Post on Feb. 9, CCR’s communication team wrote, “On behalf of the organization and alleged affected members, we can unequivocally say that these alleged Discord leaks are either doctored, edited, or manipulated. No records of these conversations or members exist, and there is no evidence they belong to CCR or any chapter. The alleged names/nicknames are not even in our Discord, and there is no evidence they ever existed. This is simply the nature of Discord.”
Before Feb. 9, the Discord’s link could be found publicly on the CCR web page masthead and included the lobby of members active within the attached server.
The link was pulled off its website on Feb. 8 for a short period of time, and then again permanently by the morning of Feb. 9.
Beginning as early as Feb. 5, the Discord server was purged of chats by moderators, until on Feb. 7 when the server was completely wiped clean. Members within the server were not informed and questioned the removed messages and chatrooms. While it is unclear who is the official moderator, both William Donahue and Dylan Martin, communications director, responded to their complaints.
The CCR Discord server contained student members from universities across all of California and there is no record of action to regulate, prevent or discipline comments that could escalate to threats of violence like user “Boghosian’s” had.
Shortly after Santana Ruiz’s email to The Poly Post, the account “Chancellor Santana” changed its name to “Mad World Mad World” and left the CCR Discord server and used the same meme that the account claimed to use when its chapter departed from the CFCR charter.
New University, University of California, Irvine’s campus newspaper reported on similar allegations on Jan. 12.
Additionally, this is not the first time CPP Republicans have been accused of hate speech and discrimination. In fall 2020, popular Instagram account CPP Confessions, an account where the CPP community can anonymously submit community news, reposted several controversial CPP Republican posts for its followers to see.
“This chat is an echo chamber for these people to have these vile, sick beliefs and they hype each other up,” “disenchantedccrmember” added. “One of my biggest concerns is that if they hype each other up enough that they will actually go out and commit acts of violence.”
As of this report, both “disenchatedccrmember” and “abusiveccr” accounts have been terminated. “I plan to continue until the end of the Unity election,” disenchatedccrmember said.
This unity election between CCR and CFCR was dated for Feb. 20, but the results have not been announced nor any news on the election been disclosed. More can be found at https://www.americafirstcr.com. William Donahue is running for chairman.
User “abusiveccr” cited that they would continue the account “as long as it takes… for all of this to hopefully end soon.”
Additional screen grabs with corresponding documents can be found here.
If students are facing harassment, they can reach out to the Office of Equity and Compliance. For reports on threats of violence contact the University Police Department. If students need to report a breach of student conduct, the Office of Student Conduct and Integrity can be found at https://www.cpp.edu/studentconduct/staff.shtml.
Edit 4/6, 7 p.m.: The names of individuals within the screenshots that The Poly Post did not reach out to have been redacted for privacy.

Top Things to Watch for When Hiring a Marketing Agency
Questionable Tactics Choosing the right marketing agency for your business is a critical decision. Select the right one, and you may find your business reaching new heights. Pick the wrong one, and you may be living with regret for quite some time. Marketing is about more than merely a way to increase exposure, leads, and sales. The public reputation of your business is at stake. Choose poorly and, at best, you have wasted time, money, and opportunity. At worst, you may be cleaning up a giant marketing mess.
To help you avoid the nightmare of choosing the wrong firm, here are the top things to watch out for.
Limited or Poor Online Presence
Fortunately, a Google search can tell you a lot about any agency. In this digital age, an online presence is an essential part of a marketing plan. While the agency you choose doesn't necessarily need to have a massive digital footprint, they should demonstrate their marketing savvy through a modern, professional website and respectable search engine results. If you have trouble finding the agency online or the quality of their website leaves something to be desired, you may consider looking elsewhere.
Online reviews can also tell you a lot about a potential agency. Part of modern marketing is reputation management. By looking at online reviews, you can see how current and past clients have experienced the firm. You can also learn a lot by how the agency deals with the occasional negative review. Take a look at Yelp, Clutch.co, and other review sites to see how your potential hire stacks up. Otherwise, you may find yourself writing a negative review once you get yourself out of the mess your new agency has created.
One more thing to look for in your marketing agency is the availability of online content. If you are looking for a successful marketing strategy, you are looking for an agency that offers some amount of thought leadership. Whether they provide online material as a part of a content marketing strategy or simply to contribute to the ongoing conversation of best practices, great firms will offer blog posts, podcasts, white papers, or some other form of content. If you can't find anything written or produced by your potential agency, it might be worthwhile to ask why.
No Real References
Including words from happy clients on a website or in marketing materials is a smart marketing move. That kind of social proof may make you interested in learning more about an agency. However, before you sign a contract or write a check, you will want to go a bit deeper. We want to trust that all of those reviews are from real, happy customers, but that is a significant risk to take when your company's reputation is on the line. Ask for some names and contact information from real, paying customers. And then, contact them. If you are dealing with a reputable agency, they will be glad to share, and those references will be happy to sing their praises. If not, this firm might not be worth the risk.
Mystery Talent
Chances are if you are hiring a marketing agency for your business, you want to know the people who will be doing your work. More and more "agencies" are farming out the majority of their work to freelancers or overseas outsourcing firms. That's fine if that is what you are looking for, and the firm is upfront about it. But be aware that the person selling you the services may not be at all involved in delivering those services. So, ask to meet with, in person, or via video conference your actual marketing consultant, the person or people who will be working on your marketing. This will help you make a better decision. You will be able to tell if this individual or team speaks your language. There are plenty of jobs that can be done with excellence by overseas workers, but for the marketing of your company, you are likely looking for someone deeply immersed in your native language and culture.
Questionable Tactics
Beware of the firm that promises things that sound too good to be true. Some agencies will promise to get your website to the top of the search results in no time. However, when you dig a little bit, you will see that they are using "black hat" search engine optimization (SEO) strategies such as the use of hidden content, keyword stuffing, link farming, and other techniques. Sometimes these strategies can achieve fast results, but they quickly fall apart and cause more harm than good. Not only can they lead to harmful consequences, like search engines removing your site from their index and results pages, they may also demonstrate that the agency does not have the experience to get results the right way. When evaluating potential marketing firms, feel free to ask about their tactics and strategies to be sure they won't cause more harm than good.
Buzzwords
If you were already a marketing genius, you wouldn't be looking for a marketing consultant. So, when interviewing a potential marketing agency, if they are talking entirely over your head, maybe they don't know what they are talking about. Exceptional marketers know how to speak to people in a language they understand. So, while marketing buzzwords like omnichannel, CPP, CRM, SERPs, or other jargon might be helpful for internal marketing work, they can also mask a lack of depth. A great a marketing agency will skip the jargon and be sure you understand what they have to offer.
No Experience in Your Industry
There are many aspects of marketing that are true across all industries and niches. However, every type of business has its unique challenges and opportunities. If the agency you are looking at doesn't have experience with your type of business, you should ask some more questions. The right agency will either have the experience or be able to demonstrate their competency in moving into a new sector. Old dogs can learn new tricks, and great agencies can expand their knowledge base. Just be sure your agency is prepared for your specific needs.
No Questions for You
If you have a meeting with a marketing agency and they fail to ask any questions about your business, you might want to keep looking. A reputable firm will want to be sure that they are a good fit. They will not want to take on a client if they can't deliver. So, they should want to know about your company, your current marketing, and your goals. If an agency seems more interested in your money than your success, look for someone else.
Something Doesn't Feel Right
It may be a bad idea to pick an agency just based on your gut. That is why we have listed several red flags to keep in mind. However, before you sign on the dotted line, do a gut check. If something doesn't feel right, either ask more questions or keep looking. This agency is going to be partially responsible for the future success and reputation of your business. If it just doesn't feel like the right fit, it probably isn't.

‘We know who you are’, NICA to CPP-NPA supporters in gov’t
#PHnews: ‘We know who you are’, NICA to CPP-NPA supporters in gov’t
MANILA – The National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) on Thursday said several supporters of communist terrorist groups (CTGs) have infiltrated different government agencies, working as state employees across various offices.
In an interview over DZAR on Thursday, NICA Director-General Alex Paul Monteagudo said they know about the individuals who were able to infiltrate government agencies.
“We know who they are, that they are even party members, supporters of the CPP [Communist Party of the Philippines]. But pinapaalam din natin sa kanila na alam natin. Alam nila na alam namin, alam ng security forces, alam ng gobyerno kung sino sila at binabantayan natin sila (We have informed them that we know. They know that we know, the security forces know, the government knows them, and we are watching them),” Monteagudo said.
Earlier, the Social Welfare Employees Association of the Philippines (SWEAP), the employees’ union of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), decided to cut ties with labor group Confederation for Unity, Recognition and Advancement of Government Employees (COURAGE).
SWEAP moved to disassociate the union from COURAGE after 20 years, citing money issues and supposed “questionable” activities and service.
Monteagudo said SWEAP officials and members started to question COURAGE on how membership fees are spent, adding that they also noticed that the group puts forward agenda related to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).
He said SWEAP officials and members felt they are being exploited by COURAGE and decided to disaffiliate from the organization.
Not from NICA but Sison
Monteagudo, however, clarified that it was neither NICA nor the government which claimed that COURAGE is part of the CPP-NPA-NDF, but CPP founder Jose Maria Sison himself.
“Ang pagsasabi naman na terrorist organization ang COURAGE ay hindi kami, mismong si Joma Sison, sa video niya nung 1987 ay in-identify niya ang COURAGE as one of those front organization ng CPP (We were not the one who said that COURAGE is part of the terrorist organization but it was Joma Sison himself in a video in 1987. He identified COURAGE as one of the front organizations of the CPP),” he said.
He added that during the early part of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, the chief executive appointed several personalities whom he knows are part of left-leaning organizations, to show his sincerity that he is willing to accept and talk with them.
The appointees were assigned to different government agencies and brought their own people inside the agency.
Monteagudo said when the officials were removed from their posts, their people remained in the state agencies since they have security of tenure.
Reds infiltrated gov’t
He said even before President Duterte’s term, “Reds have already infiltrated the government with their 52 years of existence”.
“Halos lahat ng ahensya ng gobyerno ay napasukan na sa loob ng 52 years. They have all the time sa loob ng 50 taon na ma-infilitrate itong mga organizations natin (Almost all government agencies have been infiltrated in those 52 years. They had all the time infiltrating our organizations for more than 50 years),” he said.
Another mode of entering government service, Monteagudo explained, is through student leaders who were recruited to join different front organizations and later became members or supporters of the CPP-NPA-NDF.
He said students who decided to remain in the city but remained as CTG supporters were encouraged by the group to take civil service examinations.
After passing the examinations, Monteagudo said they enter government service and work in the agencies.
“Pero pag pumasok yun dun, ang part ng kanilang sweldo pupunta sa partido (When they enter the government, part of their salary goes to the party) but their primary function is to recruit more, to influence, to agitate and to indoctrinate and to act as eyes and ears of the CPP-NPA,” Monteagudo said.
He said NICA has been presenting special briefings in different government agencies on the extent of CTG infiltration on the bureaucracy.
As per NICA’s latest estimate, there are about 300,000 to 400,000 who are allies of different CPP-NPA-NDF front organizations.
However, Monteagudo clarified that being a member of these front organizations does not mean that they are terrorists.
He said many of these members from the government sector do not know that COURAGE is a front of the CPP-NPA-NDF.
The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines. (PNA)

Why Biden Accusations Are More Credible Than Those Against Kavanagh
Recently, there has been a great deal said about the discrepancy in media coverage between the allegations made by Dr. Christine Blasey Fordagainst Justice Brett Kavanaugh at the time of his confirmation hearings and Tara Reade's recent allegations against presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. For many, sexual assault allegations are emotional in nature.
However, to address the serious nature of the criminal behaviors alleged, it's important to look at them from the legal perspective used by the law enforcement community to determine their credibility.
In the Kavanaugh case, the primary accusation came from Blasey Ford, who claimed Kavanaugh pinned her down on a bed at a high school house party over 30 years before. There were no police reports filed nor or any corroborating witnesses to the assault that could place both of them together at the party in question. Furthermore, Blasey Ford never came forward with these allegations before Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, even when he was appointed to his position with prior presidential administrations and confirmed to the U.S. District Court.
In the Biden case, former Senate staffer Tara Reade accused Biden of sexual assault in the spring of 1993 when, while working as a Democratic staffer, Reade encountered Biden in the corner of a hallway in the Russell Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill. Reade said a manager had told her to bring Biden his bag, and when she went to bring it to him, Reade said that Biden had pressed her against the wall, kissed her, and had put one of his hands under her blouse and the other up her skirt, penetrating her with his fingers.
In sharp contrast to the allegations made against Kavanaugh, Reade's allegations were corroborated by two people who say she reported the incident to her managers in 1993, which is proved by a CNN video in which Reade's mother called into the Larry King show to publically discuss her daughter's assault in the 1990s.
This week, Reade demanded that Biden release Senate papers pertinent to her time serving as his staffer in 1993 which may also corroborate the means and opportunity for Biden to have been able to commit this crime. So far Biden denies the allegations.
Furthermore, Reade came forward with her allegations March 24 and on April 9 filed a police report with the D.C. Metropolitan police — a police report which is now inactive, most likely due to statute of limitations and evidence preservation issues for a 27-year-old allegation.
Elements of a crime
With certain exceptions, every crime has at least three elements:
Actus reus — the criminal act of sexual assault
Mens rea — the criminal intent to touch a woman without her consent
The means, motive and opportunity for the concurrence of the two
Blasey Ford's allegation, because no official report, statements or corroboration existed —lacked evidence of any Mens Rea or Acus Reus. Furthermore, since none of her friends could corroborate any interaction at the party together, no evidence exists proving means or opportunity for Kavanaugh to have committed the crime. Furthermore, when pressed for details in interviews and in congressional hearings, Blasey Ford's memory was "hazy," and lacked specific details regarding the incident as well as her actions before and afterward.
In contrast, Reade can account for her working in proximity of Biden at the time, and recalls specific details about the incident, telling The New York Times: "It happened at once. He's talking to me and his hands are everywhere and everything is happening very quickly. He was kissing me and he said, very low, 'Do you want to go somewhere else?'"
Reade also told The Intercept she thinks Biden was surprised when she rejected him and pushed him off. "There was no flirtation, he had no consent." she said, "He pointed his finger at me and he just goes: 'You're nothing to me. Nothing,'" Reade told The New York Times. "Then, he took my shoulders and said, 'You're OK, you're fine.'"
After Biden left, Reade told the Times, she cleaned herself up in a bathroom and went home sobbing. She called her mother who told her to file a police report immediately, she said. Reade said that instead, she complained to Biden staffers Marianne Baker, Dennis Toner and Ted Kaufman. When no action was taken, Reade said she filed a written complaint with a Senate personnel office; where she was told that someone would call her in for a full discussion and meeting — but "that never happened," she said.
After her complaint, Reade stated that Biden's staff took away most of her duties almost immediately after the alleged incident with Biden. While Biden denies these allegations, the specificity of the allegations with references to records that can be corroborated adds credibility to Reade's allegation in sharp contrast to Blasey Ford's.
Pattern of Behavior
At the time of his confirmation hearing, Justice Kavanaugh had already passed several FBI single source background investigations (SSBIs). He had never been accused of sexual misconduct and had numerous character witnesses. In contrast, Biden's history of overstepping boundaries with women has been a running joke in the media. Even the left-leaning New York Times acknowledged the "hugs, kisses and touching that women previously said made them uncomfortable," but the publication edited this line out following pushback from the Biden campaign, which New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet appears to have admitted April 13.
Lastly, the accuser's credibility has to be examined in these cases. With Kavanaugh, many were demonized for questioning the credibility of Blasey Ford, coining the phrase "believe all women." Meanwhile, statements of Blasey Ford's own attorney illustrated a possible motive for her allegations. This contrasts sharply with Reade, a lifelong Democrat who worked for Biden; sharing many of his political stances before and after the alleged assault.
Statute of Limitations
Reade's allegations come as another reminder of the importance of the rule of law regarding the reporting and investigation of sexual assaults. Whether it's Bill Cosby or Joe Biden, statutes of limitation are vital in to preserve a fair criminal justice system.
Sexual assault, as defined under D.C. Code 22-3002 sets a statute of limitation for first- and seconddegree offenses at 15 years, with a 10-year limit to prosecute third- and fourth-degree offenses. From a former police officer's perspective, the ability to preserve evidence more than 10 years old is nearly impossible.
