Expert: The media has focused on gay adoption for quite a while, perhaps because it is controversial and controversy – like sex – sells. So, it is little wonder the attention being given to gay rights advocates who are up in arms about laws they see as discriminating against them in the adoption arena based on religious beliefs of adoption agencies such as the law recently passed in Kansas granting legal protections for faith-based adoption agencies that refuse to place children in LGBTQ homes. LGBTQ activists have now been joined by “tech giants” Google and Apple lobbying against such laws that prevent the state from denying grants and contracts to faith-based agencies for refusing to place children into homes that don’t align with their religious beliefs. A similar bill passed the house in Oklahoma and heads for the Senate. South Dakota, Michigan, Alabama, and Texas have all passed similar legislation. It amazes [and offends] me that, of all the pressing issues in child adoption today, this is the one these mega corporations chose to take on and stand up for. Is this really the most pressing current wrong in adoption? What about child trafficking for adoption? What about pressure, coercion, exploitation to meet a demand for babies? What about rehoming? What about establishing a national child abuse registry so people cannot move state to state like the Hart family did to avoid detection of their abuses to the vulnerable children entrusted to them, and may possibly have prevented the murder of six adopted children? What about denial of adoptees right to access their own birth certificates? None of that matters? It is shocking that Apple and Google find the alleged rights of the LGBTQ community more important to take a stand on than all of these other issues facing adoption. Sadly, none of these issues which cause harm and suffering to innocent children ever garnered the attention that the issue of gay adoption has. They are just not popular or sexy. Sad realities don’t sell like warm fuzzy happily-ever-after – or even indignant – stories do. Let me be perfectly clear. Despite the recently freorted horrific abuse and murder of six children adopted by Jennifer and Sarah Hart, as a lifelong friend, ally, and supporter of LGBTQ rights to equality, to live free of harassment and violence perpetrated out of hate and discrimination and to marry whomever they choose, I know that same sex couples and gay individuals can and do make excellent care-takers and parents of children, of that I have no doubt or concern and plenty of hetero adopters have brutally abused, abandoned, and murdered children in their care (as have natural parents). At Issue The argument is that adoption agencies should not have the right to discriminate against same sex couples and gay individuals and that to do so causes suffering to children who need adopting by reducing their options for a loving home, a preposterous claim when demand for children to adopt greatly outweighs the “supply.” It’s also a deceptive argument inasmuch as neither state adoptions from foster care nor secular private adoptions are being challenged. These avenues remain open to people of all persuasions. No one is screening out potential families for these children based on religious beliefs or sexual preferences. Thus, it is patently untrue that LGBT people are discriminated against when it comes to adoption. Gay adoption – like international adoption – is masqueraded as being in the best interest of “unwanted” children who are “languishing” in foster care. It is true that there are approximately half a million children in state care in the United States. Many are awaiting reunification with their families. Others who can be adopted are, for the most part, ignored by those seeking to adopt because of the children’s age, because of their physical, emotional and educational abilities and limitations, or they are sibling groups. But there are still other paths to adoption open to same sex couples. As noted in The Nation’s recent article “The Left’s Assault on Adoption”: Same-sex couples have abundant options to foster and adopt. Every state in the country allows fostering or adoption by same-sex couples. As one LGBT advocacy group has documented, there are no states where same-sex couples face legal restrictions when petitioning for fostering, joint adoption, or stepparent or second-parent adoption. Most private adoption agencies, as well as all public agencies in America, are willing to place children in same-sex households. The number of adoptions by same-sex couples has more than tripled from 6,500 couples in 2000, to 22,000 in 2010. And almost 40 percent of all adoption agencies, and 83 percent of public agencies, report that they have made at least one adoption placement with an LGBT person. Same-sex couples adopt and foster and are not prevented from doing so by the continued existence of adoption agencies that prefer to place kids with married moms and dads. Anyone – regardless of their gender, marital status, or sexual preference – is perfectly able to adopt a child needing a family. The only restriction in question is one that pits the non-existent right to adopt against the right of faith-based adoption agencies – often funded by religious institutions – to operate in keeping with their religious beliefs and to provide services to specific communities that choices such religious based services. The Nation also recognizes: Faith-based adoption agencies that follow their religious beliefs have a high level of success in placing older and disabled children. They also provide services for vulnerable women seeking help with unplanned pregnancies. Moreover, some women facing an unplanned pregnancy want their child to be raised by a married man and woman. A birth mother should have the freedom to work with an agency that honors her preferences and shares her values. In general, I am opposed to businesses refusing to serve LGBTQ customers which can result in health professionals refusing to serve clients based on their religious beliefs. However, when it comes to adoption agencies, there are multiple clients served – those seeking to adopt , the families seeking placement, and the child. Adoption is not, or should not be, merely a business transaction. And herein lies the difference between adoption agencies and wedding photographers or bakeries who are serving a single client. This is nothing new. There have long been specifically Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and Evangelical adoption agencies that serve their communities, providing families the option of selecting who might or might not want to raise their child based on religious values and practices. Should that right be taken from families in need of finding alternative, extra-familial care for their child? It is, after all their child up until they relinquish their parental rights or have those rights terminated by the state. Families in crisis considering adoption have the same right to ensure their child is raised in the tradition of his or her family of birth and kin just as every parent does and thus have the right to choose a placing agency to act on their wishes and preferences. Religious and secular adoption agencies have many criteria such as age of those seeking to adopt, standards some may object to or call discriminatory. The alternative, however, is a society in which children are treated like cars that are sold to whomever has the ability to pay. Adoption agencies act on behalf of and represent families in need. We hope they are acting on good faith and using good judgment to do the best not for the paying client – those adopting – but for the silent client, the child. In that capacity, representing the most vulnerable among us, it is their duty to be selective and have criteria. As a society, we want potential adopters subjected to criminal background checks and home studies though many object to being scrutinized in ways that people who become parents naturally are not. But should the safety net for children in need be any less cautious? The powerful LGBTQ lobby I have long avoided writing about this aspect adoption knowing that unless I am totally in favor and supportive of the rights of the LGBTQ community to adopt, I would be seen as biased against gays and deemed homophobic. The rights of LGBTQ people to create anonymous offspring via genetic “donations”, to exploit women as surrogates, and their alleged right to adopt – a right no one has – become hands off, sacrosanct. Speak out against any of these practices that provide children for LGBTQs and you are labeled prejudiced against their sexual preferences, and silenced, despite speaking out against such practices for all. Out of more than 100 blog posts I wrote for Huffington Post, only two were rejected. One was this one, opposing the sale of anonymous genetic material because it stepped on the toes of the gay community, despite my objections being the practices themselves when utilized by anyone, gay or straight. No adoption policy should be formed without hearing and respecting the input of the lived experiences of adoptees. Anything less treats adopted persons as commodities. Yet, the voices of adult children of same-sex parents who dare to write or speak out about their personal experience in anything but glowing terms, are silenced, discounted as “ungrateful,” bitter, angry by powerful LGBTQ lobby. Those who are less than thrilled at having been raised by same-sex parents report having have great difficulty getting published despite glowing credentials, are labeled homophobes, and are harassed to the point that at least one woman known as Rivka Edelman had to go underground and write under a pseudonym. Gay men and women, like any group of people, are unique individuals and cannot be grouped together based on that one aspect of their lives. Not all women or even all feminists agree on everything any more than all left-handed people, or all Ohioans share similar opinions, or beliefs. Thus, not all members of the LGBTQ community are incensed or feel discriminated against by religious adoption agencies upholding their criteria. Bryan C. is a gay male adoptee and an adoptee rights advocate. He brings a unique perspective to this issue: My issue with same sex couples adopting a child is not dissimilar to my issue with any couple or individual legally and ethically adopt[ing], that being the primacy of the child’s well-being above and beyond any real or imagined “need” to parent where biological ability is absent. It is my sincere belief as an adoptee who struggled over years with my own sexuality (self-concept) issues, that a child at all cost, be allowed to thrive in the most stable environment possible. In some instances, single mothers and fathers . . . if assisted by family and professional help would be [able] to maintain an original nuclear family. In the absence of that possibility, a child placed for adoption for whatever reason, is immediately in a destabilized environment by the very nature of the process. When one compounds that destabilized situation, it is not, in my opinion, ameliorated by adding further to a [child] placement [with] a same sex couple by nature of it not being a societal ‘norm’ (tolerance or lack thereof ) is not itself necessarily a stable environment. A child already struggling with issues of adoption is then faced with the struggle of being raised in a created non-traditional family. There may be instances of success, but in light of what I have experienced as both a ‘successful adoptee’ who grew up and became an experienced gay man, I believe what I have written to be true from my experience. I do not think same sex parents ‘deserve’ to be parents more than stable single parents, it simply adds another potential layer of instability to a child of whom instability, in my honest opinion, is already a large portion of their lives. This is my opinion with the interest of all adopted or potentially adopted children, including those conceived in vitro as primary. My position on adoption As a lifetime advocate for children and families, I too view adoption through one narrow lens: the best interest of children, above and beyond the alleged “rights” of any of the adults involved (birth or adoptive parents) over those of the child, though I recognize the powerful bond created by the mother/child dyad and believe it detrimental to both mother and child to severe that without good cause. As such I do not give primacy for the needs, wants, desires or wishes of anyone seeking to create or enlarge their family through adoption. I believe adoption should always be about finding the best care for children not about filling longing arms. (I am equally disliked for this position in the infertility community which has accused me of being heartless and lacking compassion as in the LGBT community.) Apple and Google and any others who support adoption need to educate themselves and learn the facts. Adoption is glamorized, applauded, encouraged, and promoted as a win-win. It is not. Every adoption, in fact, begins with a loss that creates a lifetime trauma. Many – perhaps even most – adoptees cope well with the separation, loss, lies, and secrecy of the relinquishment at the foundation of every adoption. Their resilience and coping skills do not, however, eliminate struggles such as cultural identity and lack of medical history. Stranger adoption – by any non-related person or persons – should be a last resort turned to only when there are no extended family able or willing to parent. It should not be encouraged and fought for as a right. Viewing adoption from a child-centric perspective, we need to be less inclined to jump on the band-wagon of anything that increases the enormously high demand for sought-after babies – currently about 36 to 1. It is this demand and the tens of thousands of dollars those seeking children to adopt are willing and allowed to pay, that creates pressure, coercion, exploitation, corruption, and child trafficking. Thus, if one agency turns down one couple there are many other agencies and many others vying to adopt! No child has suffered. No adult’s “rights,” needs, desires, or feelings of entitlement should take precedent over the rights of children in need. http://clubof.info/

Dealer memberships show competence
It is a common occurrence that people come into possession of coins, paper money, precious metals and other related items from an inheritance, gift, or discovery. In many instances, these new owners do not have the ability to easily identify these items, or what potential value they might have.
In the store where I work, we assist many people every day who are in this situation. Several of them state that they have tried doing research on the Internet with either no satisfying result or perhaps noticing a similar item of great value and wondering if what they have might be a valuable treasure.
Those who hold themselves out to serve the public as coin dealers, either in stores, at shows, online, or however, have varying degrees of numismatic knowledge. Some are deeply experienced numismatists across a broad range of niches. Others are exceptionally knowledgeable on a narrow category of numismatics. Still others have limited knowledge or are not up to date on valuations. When members of the public seek out a dealer to check on what they now own, what can dealers do to reassure these customers of their competence and credibility?
It is not practically possible to obtain a college degree in numismatics. Also, governments do not require coin dealers to be licensed. So, what can coin dealers do to reassure people they can properly assist them?
One way to exemplify your professional status is through numismatic memberships. At the absolute minimum, anyone holding themselves out as a coin dealer in the United States, even if you are just a casual seller in Internet auctions and stores, should be a member of the American Numismatic Association (www.money.org). Being a life member of the ANA is more impressive than just an annual member. Once joining, make sure that you are listed in the ANA’s dealer directory so that those checking that website can find you.
ANA membership is just the beginning of reassuring your potential customers of your credibility. You should also become a member of a local, state, and perhaps even regional numismatic organization, with life memberships being more impressive to the public. Beyond just being a member, consider serving as an officer or committee member. (For instance, when I recently testified before the State House of Representatives committee in Kansas that was considering a bill to exempt rare coins, precious metals and currency from that state’s sales tax, one of the local dealers had more credibility when he identified himself as the president of the Kansas Numismatic Association.)
If your business is focused on a particular numismatic niche, you should join organizations devoted to that sector. If you deal in paper money, as one example, consider becoming a member of the Professional Currency Dealers Association (http://www.pcdaonline.com/) and the Society of Paper Money Collectors (https://www.spmc.org/).
Another way to develop your credentials is to seek opportunities to speak about numismatics to school classes, service groups, scouting organizations, 4-H clubs, and the like. You can also write articles on subjects of special knowledge you possess that are published in a wide range of venues (some of which might pay you!).
The Numismatic Dealer Directory published by CDN Publishing (https://www.greysheet.com/DealerDirectory) lists more than 4,000 dealers online. Its 2015 printed edition listed more than 10,000 dealers. If your business is not listed there, you should contact them to be added, which may require a subscription to one or more of their products.
If a coin dealer becomes an authorized dealer for the major grading services, that business can be listed in their dealer directories.
In my mind, any coin dealership with a storefront or office to which the public can go should automatically become a member of the Industry Council for Tangible Assets (www.ictaonline.org). This is the national coin dealer trade association. At some coin shows in the past, an ICTA sticker has been attached to the dealer signs to signify ICTA membership. This gives those dealers more credibility to the public visiting such shows. Beyond just joining ICTA, a dealer should also support the Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force that is sponsored by ICTA.
Becoming a member of ICTA helps a coin dealer stick out from competitors. For example, the Numismatic Dealer Directory lists 44 dealers in Kansas. But there are only six Kansas dealers who are ICTA members. If you were a member of the Kansas public seeking a good coin dealer to patronize, ICTA members have a definite edge.
For those who have been in the coin business for a significant period of time, consider a membership in the Professional Numismatists Guild (https://pngdealers.org/). This is a more exclusive organization with higher membership costs. In Kansas, for example, there are only three PNG members.
In my public presentations on consumer protection issues when buying and selling rare coins, paper money and precious metals, I suggest that one way to vouch for the credibility of a dealer is to see if they are members of the ANA, ICTA and PNG. If they are not a member of any of these organizations, a member of the public might want to search for a different dealer. A better reassurance of a dealer’s credibility would be memberships in two or all three of these organizations.
In my opinion, it is not that important to become a member of the local Better Business Bureau. My experience has been that very few coin dealers become members. However, in the scandals of numismatic and precious metals businesses that have defrauded customers, it seems like a high percentage of these companies tout their BBB rating prominently in their online and printed materials. If I see a prominent reference by a dealer to the BBB rating, that actually diminishes a dealer’s credibility in my view.
The above list is not exhaustive of ways that coin dealers can build their credibility and distinguish their business from the competition in the eyes of the general public. For instance, non-numismatic memberships in local business or chamber of commerce organizations can be of value. Almost all of the above suggestions do involve spending money, but I think most or all of them will pay off in the long term with greater patronage from the public.

Will Your State Block Access to Natural Healthcare Choices or Supplements?
New bills introduced throughout the US. Will you and your family be affected? State-based action alerts!
It’s the beginning of many states’ legislative sessions, and there are a number of bills being considered that could affect your access to naturopaths, nutritionists, and supplements, as well as vaccine choice. Check below to see if your state is one of them, and click the link to take action!
Dietetics
ANH believes that the market for nutrition services should be open and transparent, where consumers can decide for themselves the level of education and experience, and the kind of training they prefer in a nutrition professional. Too often, particular trade associations, such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the trade association for Registered Dieticians, try to exclude other professionals from practicing and instead create a monopoly for one particular type of professional. In practice this often means that practitioners who don’t ascribe to a narrow set of conventional practices are unable to compete. ANH supports state bills that allow nutrition professionals to practice to the full extent of their knowledge and training. Click on your state to take action below.
Oppose:
New York SB 2231 provides for licensure of dieticians and nutritionists but does not allow unlicensed practitioners to practice “medical nutrition therapy”—meaning that unlicensed individuals could not provide consumers with information related to specific conditions, which we believe is overly restrictive and does not allow all professionals to practice to the full extent of their education and training.
Florida SB 758/HB 561 restricts who can provide diabetes self-management training to someone who is registered and is a certified diabetes educator from the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). This unfairly restricts the market for diabetes education to those certified to the AADE. Patients should be afforded the choice to seek advice from the practitioner best suited to help them, and not have their choices arbitrarily limited by the state government. It is also not the government’s role to deliver business to the AADE, and help them win a monopoly over the diabetes education field.
Support:
Florida HB 1047 opens up the practice of nutrition in the state. The bill allows health coaches, holistic professionals, nutritional therapy practitioners, and others to provide nutrition services, advice, and recommendations without needing a license.
Naturopathic Licensure
ANH believes that naturopathic doctors (NDs) who have been educated at accredited naturopathic, four-year medical schools should be able to practice medicine consistent with that training. This involves a licensure program that provides a scope of practice similar to a conventional medical doctor, keeping in mind that NDs expertise is in natural approaches to health and healing. However, an ANH-supported licensure law for NDs would not exclude traditional naturopaths – those trained by other institutions – from practicing. Although they would not have the same scope as naturopathic doctors, they would be free to continue their current practices. ANH believes that natural health practitioners should be able to practice to the full extent of their training and experience, and consumers—not the government—should decide which credentials they prefer when seeking natural health services.

Pennsylvania SB 834 sets up a licensure program for naturopathic doctors and defines their scope of practice, while still allowing traditional naturopaths to continue to practice.
Minnesota HB 1138/SB 1514 sets up a licensure program for naturopathic doctors and defines their scope of practice, while still allowing traditional naturopaths to continue to practice.
Supplements
Supplements are a key component of natural medicine. ANH defends consumer access to quality dietary supplements and opposes state efforts to restrict consumer access.
Oppose:
Massachusetts HB 1195 would force retailers to place supplements marketed for weight-loss and muscle-building behind sales counters, accessible only by store managers or pharmacists, and available only to those who are 18 years of age and older. The major problem with this bill is that we just don’t know how many supplements will fall under its loosely defined categories. Will your protein powder suddenly become over the counter? Or consider weight-loss supplements: will they include natural laxatives? This law will force people into the embarrassing situation of having to announce needing a laxative for a health condition they have—some might even stop buying products they need to avoid this embarrassment. Will probiotics be considered “weight-loss” supplements? We just don’t know, which is why this bill must be opposed.
Vaccines
Many states will be considering bills that limit vaccine choice, whether by eliminating or restricting exemptions or mandating vaccines for children or certain workers. Patients deserve a right to decide which medical treatments to receive, especially when there are safety concerns. There is plenty of scientific data that throws the safety of vaccine ingredients into serious question.
Florida: S 1558/HB 1343 adds HPV to the list of vaccines required for school. Hawaii: HB 779 would establish a philosophical belief exemption to vaccination. Iowa: HF 261 and SF 116 would restrict or eliminate the religious belief exemption for parents who don’t want their children to be vaccinated. Support HF 7, which would add a personal exemption to vaccination. Illinois: SB 741 and HB 2984 would require healthcare workers to get the flu shot and allow any facility licensed by the health dept. to mandate flu vaccines for health care personnel, respectively. Kansas: HB 2205 would mandate the meningitis vaccine for school children. Maine: LD 1664 and LD 272/HP 205 mandate the meningitis vaccine for school children. MN: HF 2379/SF 1994 and SF 1129/HF 2469 would allow minors to consent to HPV vaccination. Minnesota: SB 760 requires flu vaccines for healthcare workers. SB 741 creates a new law that no mercury-containing vaccines can be administered to children; and HB 1560 prohibits discrimination against unvaccinated children. Mississippi: SB 2059, HB 47, and HB 414 would establish religious and philosophical belief exemptions to vaccination, allow adults to deny vaccines, and prohibit Hep B vaccination at birth unless parents request it. New Hampshire: HB 1503 would allow minors to consent to all medical procedures, including vaccination. New Jersey: S941, A1847, and A3968/S2332 mandate the meningitis vaccine for college students, the HPV vaccine for sixth through twelfth graders, and mandate vaccines for healthcare workers. New York: S52/A1810, S3546, A2469, A1230, A933, A738, and S132 would eliminate or restrict the religious belief exemption for parents who don’t want their children to be vaccinated, mandate certain vaccines, including the incredibly dangerous HPV vaccine, and allow health care workers to administer the HPV/Hep B vaccine to minors without parental consent. S163 strengthens and expands the medical exemption to vaccination. Oklahoma: SB 1123 would eliminate all exemptions to vaccines except for an extremely restrictive medical exemption. There is also a resolution SJR 57, that would put a question on the next general election ballot about eliminating all non-medical exemptions to vaccines. Oregon: HB 4157 would mandate the meningitis vaccine for school children. Pennsylvania: SB 217 would eliminate the conscientious belief exemption, making it more difficult for concerned parents to protect their children. Rhode Island: H5681 would eliminate the religious belief exemption for parents who don’t want their children to be vaccinated. SB 47 adds a personal belief exemption to vaccines, and H5986 adds a personal belief and philosophical exemption. Virginia: HB 664 would mandate the meningitis vaccine for school children. West Virginia: SB 318 would require all healthcare workers to get the flu shot every year. HB 2945 and SB 330 would establish religious and conscientious belief exemptions to vaccination.

The mystery of a 1918 veteran and the flu pandemic

Vaccination is underway for the 2017-2018 seasonal flu, and next year will mark the 100-year anniversary of the 1918 flu pandemic, which killed roughly 40 million people. It is an opportune time to consider the possibility of pandemics – infections that go global and affect many people – and the importance of measures aimed at curbing them.
The 1918 pandemic was unusual in that it killed many healthy 20- to 40-year-olds, including millions of World War I soldiers. In contrast, people who die of the flu are usually under five years old or over 75.
The factors underlying the virulence of the 1918 flu are still unclear. Modern-day scientists sequenced the DNA of the 1918 virus from lung samples preserved from victims. However, this did not solve the mystery of why so many healthy young adults were killed.
I started investigating what happened to a young man who immigrated to the U.S. and was lost during World War I. Uncovering his story also brought me up to speed on hypotheses about why the immune systems of young adults in 1918 did not protect them from the flu.
The 1918 flu and World War I
Certificates picturing the goddess Columbia as a personification of the U.S. were awarded to men and women who died in service during World War I. One such certificate surfaced many decades later. This one honored Adolfo Sartini and was found by grandnephews who had never known him: Thomas, Richard and Robert Sartini.
The certificate was a message from the past. It called out to me, as I had just received the credential of certified genealogist and had spent most of my career as a scientist tracing a gene that regulates immune cells. What had happened to Adolfo?
A bit of sleuthing identified Adolfo’s ship listing, which showed that he was born in 1889 in Italy and immigrated to Boston in 1913. His draft card revealed that he worked at a country club in the Boston suburb of Newton. To learn more, Robert Sartini bought a 1930 book entitled “Newton War Memorial” on eBay. The book provided clues: Adolfo was drafted and ordered to report to Camp Devens, 35 miles from Boston, in March of 1918. He was later transferred to an engineer training regiment.
To follow up, I posted a query on the “U.S. Militaria Forum.” Here, military history enthusiasts explained that the Army Corps of Engineers had trained men at Camp A. A. Humphreys in Virginia. Perhaps Adolfo had gone to this camp?
While a mild flu circulated during the spring of 1918, the deadly strain appeared on U.S. soil on Tuesday, Aug. 27, when three Navy dockworkers at Commonwealth Pier in Boston fell ill. Within 48 hours, dozens more men were infected. Ten days later, the flu was decimating Camp Devens. A renowned pathologist from Johns Hopkins, William Welch, was brought in. He realized that “this must be some new kind of infection or plague.” Viruses, minuscule agents that can pass through fine filters, were poorly understood.
With men mobilizing for World War I, the flu spread to military installations throughout the U.S. and to the general population. It hit Camp Humphreys in mid-September and killed more than 400 men there over the next month. This included Adolfo Sartini, age 29½. Adolfo’s body was brought back to Boston.
His grave is marked by a sculpture of the lower half of a toppled column, epitomizing his premature death.
The legacy of victims of the 1918 flu
The quest to understand the 1918 flu fueled many scientific advances, including the discovery of the influenza virus. However, the virus itself did not cause most of the deaths. Instead, a fraction of individuals infected by the virus were susceptible to pneumonia due to secondary infection by bacteria. In an era before antibiotics, pneumonia could be fatal.
Recent analyses revealed that deaths in 1918 were highest among individuals born in the years around 1889, like Adolfo. An earlier flu pandemic emerged then, and involved a virus that was likely of a different subtype than the 1918 strain. These analyses engendered a novel hypothesis, discussed below, about the susceptibility of healthy young adults in 1918.
Exposure to an influenza virus at a young age increases resistance to a subsequent infection with the same or a similar virus. On the flip side, a person who is a child around the time of a pandemic may not be resistant to other, dissimilar viruses. Flu viruses fall into groups that are related evolutionarily. The virus that circulated when Adolfo was a baby was likely in what is called “Group 2,” whereas the 1918 virus was in “Group 1.” Adolfo would therefore not be expected to have a good ability to respond to this “Group 1” virus. In fact, exposure to the “Group 2” virus as a young child may have resulted in a dysfunctional response to the “Group 1” virus in 1918, exacerbating his condition.
Support for this hypothesis was seen with the emergence of the Hong Kong flu virus in 1968. It was in “Group 2” and had severe effects on people who had been children around the time of the 1918 “Group 1” flu.
To 2018 and beyond
What causes a common recurring illness to convert to a pandemic that is massively lethal to healthy individuals? Could it happen again? Until the reason for the death of young adults in 1918 is better understood, a similar scenario could reoccur. Experts fear that a new pandemic, of influenza or another infectious agent, could kill millions. Bill Gates is leading the funding effort to prevent this.
Flu vaccines are generated each year by monitoring the strains circulating months before flu season. A time lag of months allows for vaccine production. Unfortunately, because the influenza virus mutates rapidly, the lag also allows for the appearance of virus variants that are poorly targeted by the vaccine. In addition, flu pandemics often arise upon virus gene reassortment. This involves the joining together of genetic material from different viruses, which can occur suddenly and unpredictably.
An influenza virus is currently killing chickens in Asia, and has recently killed humans who had contact with chickens. This virus is of a subtype that has not been known to cause pandemics. It has not yet demonstrated the ability to be transmitted from person to person. However, whether this ability will arise during ongoing virus evolution cannot be predicted.
The chicken virus is in “Group 2.” Therefore, if it went pandemic, people who were children around the time of the 1968 “Group 2” Hong Kong flu might have some protection. I was born much earlier, and “Group 1” viruses were circulating when I was a child. If the next pandemic virus is in “Group 2,” I would probably not be resistant.
It’s early days for understanding how prior exposure affects flu susceptibility, especially for people born in the last three to four decades. Since 1977, viruses of both “Group 1” and “Group 2” have been in circulation. People born since then probably developed resistance to one or the other based on their initial virus exposures. This is good news for the near future since, if either a “Group 1” or a “Group 2” virus develops pandemic potential, some people should be protected. At the same time, if you are under 40 and another pandemic is identified, more information would be needed to hazard a guess as to whether you might be susceptible or resistant.
