9 and 10 for the fandom asks!
hi!! thank you!! I apologize if the formatting is weird for this, I wrote half of it on my phone notes app the the rest on the Tumblr site and also I just generally don't know how to do things hahah
(i'm focussing on the sandman cuz I think that’s the biggest fandom we share!!)
9. a ship that isn't your OTP but that you enjoy
so dreamling is my ultimate sandman ship, BUT. two other ones I love are:
dream/hob/corinthian aka hobrintheus. everyone go read @softest-punk’s fic self-abandon, and the confounding effects thereof !! hob humanizing the corinthian (calling him cori), the corinthian being so genuinely in love with hob, dream being being so very dream about the situation… pure excellence. I have a handful of other fics I can rec for this ship, too!!
dream/hob/daniel. this is 10000000% @moorishflower’s fault because their Beautiful, Strange and New series is fucking unparalleled  (tbh everything they write is like a drug to me). the main fic was so incredibly fun to read while it was a wip!!! especially when the story gets to that part (ifkyk).
10. a blog (mutual or one you follow) that has made your fandom experience brighter
okay this question is so hard to answer because I’ve only got back into any fandom in 2022 (long and kinda sad story) and I haven’t quite gotten up the gumption to talk to many people outside of commenting on fics. so!! I’m just gonna shoutout some more fics I love from the people I talked about in the other answer!
here’s a few more @softest-punk fics that I recommend, especially if you like alternate universes, a hopelessly-in-love hob, and support the Trans Agenda:
Catching Up - human/no powers au with alternating pov. all that post-fishbowl trauma goodness with an incredibly sweet hob who just wants to take care of his dear friend (who he is also hopelessly in love with but that's nbd)
Falling - another human/no powers au! strangers to friends to lovers story with extremely hot sex. i'm remembering how much I love this one and I'm about to go reread it!!
Half sleep, half waking- this is one of their most recents fics and it's a rivers of london crossover!! 1989 fishbowl rescue au (alternating hob and nightingale pov) where hob enlists the help of his friend (and ex-lover) dci nightingale to figure out why his oldest friend (who he is hopelessly in love with) missed their centennial meeting. I love hob's whole "thing" in this one–I have a personal head canon that he would absolutely have all kinds of rizz with the potentially less than human and/or immortal components of the world.
here's some more @moorishflower fics I recommend, especially if you like alternate universes, delicious angst, and extremely well thought out world-building! I don't know the best way to word this (fiction writing isn't my strong suit), but the way that this author describes things makes me go insane. they know exactly how to describe how things taste/smell/feel and it just completely transports me into the story.
iron, glass, bones, blood - monster4monster, love but the kind of love where you want to pin them to a board like a butterfly and find out what their blood looks like under a microscope, kink as a way to reclaim trauma... I literally cannot tell you how many times I've read this fic. it feels like it was pulled from the very depths of my subconscious.
On sexual dimorphism in C. urophasianus - (if you know me irl, no you don't) very lighthearted, non-traditional a/b/o, omegas are very empowered. they've only been together one week and it's still very new between them and now dream has to "court" hob because of his instincts going all crazy. very, very sweet!!
17th Century Knife Restoration - this fic made me cryyyyyy. hob watching a restoration video on YouTube and uh oh its his knife and uh oh now he has many feelings. to be loved is to be known, and also to be changed 💜
also their Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs series' most recent fic, Basic Needs, is currently posting and is making ME have many feelings!! check this one out if you want mutual pining of the most desperate nature, down and out dream and caretaker hob (oh and hob has a gigantic dick and dream is obsessed with it)

Line of Duty Timeline: Can This Help To Solve the Jo Davidson DNA Mystery?
https://ift.tt/3s4cUyW
Warning: contains major spoilers for Line of Duty series 1-6.
You could say we’ve taken this too far. You could be right. You could also say that, for a Line of Duty fan attempting to solve the Jo Davidson family mystery, it’s useful to know that Tommy Hunter was 13 years old when Jo Davidson was born, making him more likely to be her brother than her father. Or that John Corbett was born two months after Jo Davidson, making it impossible for his mother Anne-Marie McGillis to also be her mother.
And then there are the real questions, such as: the day before AC-12 raided Hillside Lane Station in series six, it was Kate Fleming’s 35th birthday. Did she bring in doughnuts? Had Kate come in worse for wear from one too many glasses of white in Frederico’s with Jo? The people demand to know.
Taken from police records glimpsed on screen and episode scripts, below are the key dates mentioned in Line of Duty, in chronological order, right from the start. We’ll update as series six continues. Use it to bolster your theories and beat your friends in arguments. Carry the fire, team.

Happy 64th Birthday Scottish actor Ron Donachie.
Born Ronald Eaglesham Porter in Dundee on April 26th 1956  Ron might not be a household name, but is a weel kent face on our screens during the last 40 years or so.
He was educated at Madras College, St. Andrews and Glasgow University, from where he graduated with an M.A (Hons.) in English Literature and Drama in 1979. After a year working as a navvy, he joined the 7.84 theatre company for the play "One Big Blow", in which the cast mimicked a traditional, colliery band by singing in six part harmony. The success of the play led to the formation of the acapella band "The Flying Pickets", who had a Christmas number one in 1983. Donachie's decision not to stay with the band and thereby missing out on their success has been described by him as "one of my more brilliant career decisions."
Throughout the 1980s, he was a prolific theatre performer all across the British Isles,  now largely vanished repertory system. This afforded him the opportunity to act in many classical plays which are now rarely performed due to budget constraints and closed theatres. During this period, he appeared in over twenty plays at the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre. Like many performers with similar experience, he considers this the happiest, most fruitful and most influential phase of his career.
That's not to say he wasn't on TV in the 80's, firstly I would like to say he probably appeared in more episodes of Taggart than any other person, except the regular cast, clocking up five appearances all as different characters between 1987 and 2006.
The first thing I remember Don in was the brilliant Tutti Fruiti, with Robbie Coltrane, Richard Wilson and Maurice Roëves, he was also in 15 episodes of the old Scottish soap, Take the High Road as  Duncan Strachan.
The 90's saw his TV career really take off, parts in Taking over the Asylum, The Governor, Cracker and Looking after JoJo, as well as playing the Master at Arms in the Oscar winning film Titanic.
Into the new century and I think some of us will recall Don, in what I think is his most well known role as DCI Andrew Ross in the long running cop soap The Bill. Then Silent Witness, The Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, Rebus and Stone of Destiny to name but a few.
In the past few years Game of Thrones fans will have known him as Rodrik Cassel, or if you like last weeks birthday boy James James McAvoy in Filth, Don played the part of Hector. He was in casualty for a number of episodes, The brilliant mini series The Loch, and just this year was in Deadwater Fell with David Tennant. Don also appeared in the Bruce bio-film Outlaw King as Robert Wishart, Bishop of Glasgow.
Married on St. Patrick's Day 1989 to Fiona Biggar, the couple have two grown up children.

Wow...I’m sorry it seems I’m on here only once every month or so to do anything, but life’s been crazy! Still love coming on here to see how things are!
For those that know me, you probably already had at least an idea as to why I chose the username 13thplaceswiftie on here. For those that don’t know me as well, here’s why I chose this name as I dove into Swiftie Tumblr.
I’ve always seemed to be the one drawn towards music in general from a young age. When I was little, I sang in the local boys choir, participated in church musicals, and then in 5th grade, I discovered the trombone, which began a love affair with band really ever since then. Even to this day, I still love to pick up my trombone and play around with it some 16 years after I first decided to try it out as a kid. That eventually led to an interest in marching band when I was around 13 after seeing the marching band of the high school I would eventually be going to perform at a football game. I then went on to march all 4 years of high school before fulfilling a dream I had ever since I started following it closely as a high school band geek: I got the chance to march in the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps out of Dubuque, IA and participate in the Drum Corps International (DCI) Summer Tour.
Even though I could go on for ages about drum corps, the shortest way I can put it was that it’s a whole bunch of band geeks (up to 150 when I marched) that left home for the whole summer to perfect and perform an 11-12 minute long field show over the course of 2 and a half months while sleeping on buses and gym floors but also having the opportunity to perform in spectacular venues typically reserved for large sporting events (The Alamodome in San Antonio, the old Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis). Oh, and no woodwinds. Just brass, percussion, and colorguard!
I was extremely fortunate to have been able to participate in drum corps for 2 summers, both with the Colts, with my first being in 2011 and my last (my age out year, aka I’m too old after this season) in 2014. The 2014 season is where the origin of the 13thplaceswiftie username starts to take hold. For the past few seasons, the Colts hadn’t been in serious contention for the top 12 corps on tour. Being in the top 12 meant you got to perform in the finals competition of the DCI World Championships in Indianapolis, and the place was always packed that night. We’re talking between 25,000 to 30,000 people in one stadium to watch band basically. Our field show in 2014 was called “Dark Side of the Rainbow,” which took place in a dystopian version of Oz 10 years after the Wizard and Dorothy had left. In that time, the Scarecrow had taken control of Oz for himself, and we turned this story into something similar to a Shakespeare tragedy. The music selections were awesome to perform, including a huge bulk of tunes from Pink Floyd’s iconic “Dark Side of the Moon” album, “Everything In Its Right Place” by Radiohead, and a jazz number by Raymond Scott called “Powerhouse” that had been used prominently in old Looney Tunes cartoons. (I’ll link the show at the end of the post for any interested in watching) It was an incredibly fun show to perform, and we performed it well, surprising a lot of DCI fans with how strong a unit we had become and the fact we had beaten some corps that we hadn’t beaten in some time; we beat and ultimately finished ahead of one corps for the first time since 2010, and had completely erased a 5 point late June deficit (which was still at 4 points in mid July) to beat them on the last weekend of the season at the championships. We were in 13th place going into the semifinals of the world championships, one spot out from qualifying for finals...and we stayed in 13th...and missed qualifying for finals by just ONE TENTH of a point. And just like that, our season was done, so close to making finals, but not quite making it...plus it was my last ever show as a member in DCI. It was a very bittersweet end to say the least.
Fast forward a couple years, and I started talking on Twitter to this girl from Ohio who also liked band and DCI. Not too long after we started talking, I got dumped by my now ex, and despite being in such a low place, I always found myself coming back to her. We started talking more and more about what we liked, what music interests we had, so on and so forth, and we only got closer with time. That eventually led to us meeting in person one weekend in mid April 2016, and it was a great weekend finally being able to see each other and do things together as best friends! Shortly afterwards, she sent me a mix CD that was in essence her first love letter to me. Those musical interests I mentioned we talked about? She loves Taylor Swift. And I mean LOVES Taylor and her music. Nearly half of the tracks she put on there were Taylor’s spanning all the way back from her debut album to 1989. I had heard Taylor’s songs on the radio, in stores, on Wednesdays in cafes, but this was the first time I had been able to really listen to the songs that weren’t released as singles, and I started to fall more and more in love with Taylor and her music...and at the same time fell more and more in love with the girl that introduced me to those sounds I hadn’t heard before...the sounds that ultimately led us to be together and have stayed together for the past 3 years! And in about a week and a half, I’ll be moving in with her as I start grad school at the school she’s completing her degree at!
That girl I’m talking about is the cutie in the picture with me, @holycoffeegrounds13. And that picture was from our first ever concert together as a couple (and to be perfectly honest, my first EVER huge concert that wasn’t a DCI show)! Having introduced me to Taylor and her music and who she is as a person, she taught me a lot about Taylor in general from her love of cats and coffee...to 13 being her lucky number! And thinking back on everything, I can’t help but feel that this was absolutely meant to be. I first met Nikki through the activity I’d fallen in love with, and then we ultimately grew closer and then ended up together thanks to Taylor and her music. Maybe that 13th place finish back in 2014 was a sign...maybe the stars were aligned just right from that score announcement that at first crushed me...it eventually evolved into this wonderful thing. I’m a band geek. I’m a Swiftie. My corps finished in 13th...Taylor’s favorite number is 13...Taylor and her music ultimately brought Nikki and me together...what beautiful poetry. I’m a 13thplaceswiftie.
-Nathanael
P.S. @taylorswift if you somehow happen to come across this, I can’t thank you enough again for not only all the great music and great acts of kindness you’ve done for so many, but also for bringing me and Nikki together. I hope the day can come where we each can thank you in person. Either way, thank you, thank you, thank you, 13 times over!

Os cinco depois do 5!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Clio I: 1990-1998

Clio II: 1998-2004
Tumblr media
A surpresa Clio V6
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Clio V-2019

Bayonne 1980
Everyone knows that part of my artistic lineage is 1980’s drum corps. But I don’t believe I’ve really mentioned my first encounter with top-12 DCI Drum Corps.
The story I usually tell is about how, in 1981, my band director, Gary Iida, took four of us to an early tour local competition in Riverside. I usually tell a couple of stories from that show as my corps origin story. It mostly is and it did shape my life.
But my very first pairing was actually the summer before, in 1980, the summer after freshman year. I happened across the live PBS broadcast of the 1980 World Championships. It was Saturday, August 16. Live from Birmingham, must have been around 10:pm
The house where some of the older band members had gathered to watch was the last stop on an addled tour of Claremont. I was pretty drunk and likely quite high. That night is the reason I don’t drink rum. My southern comfort moment came in 1986.
I don’t remember whose house it was where we watched or how I got there or how I got home. I don’t remember with whom I was rolling (It was probably Tom and Andy but I have no clue who drove). All I remember is Blue Devils, the Spirt of Atlanta, and the Bayonne Bridgemen.
As a freshman varsity member of the band, I got it immediately. I understood why this was appointment TeeVee And why it mattered. This was the next level shit and it was–after Riverside ’81–what I was going to become.
I stumbled across this video today. This is from the 1980 Bridgemen tour, clearly late tour. It is a 100% accurate glimpse into 1980 and that era drum corps. I aged out seven years later and everything had evolved to be quite civilized (at least in the corps I joined). The food was great, the buses were relatively luxurious. Tour was comfy. But that clut-like magic you see in their eyes was real; absolutely accurate. I have experienced that. And it feels so smugly superior. I guess I never let that go. The early ‘80s corps were my inspiration to do what I did.
From that night nearly 40 years ago, I remember small patches of the broadcast and nothing else. But I remember most of that Bridgeman show. Maybe the years of subsequent study of every note enhances the memories, but what does it matter?
The Bridgemen were ahead-of-their-time performative when everyone else was still military precise (except SCV but they were too far ahead of the activity and got hosed in 1989 with a 7th finals). I pretty much preferred the precision to the performative for much of my association with the activity but Bridgemen were authentic and emotive and fresh. They were the only serious contender with shenanigans. They finished third, their highest placing. They could never ever have won.

SMOKING & DIVING!
Do the Two Make A Risk Factor For Decompression Illness?
Tumblr media
By Dr. David Buch
Most scuba divers know that consuming alcoholic beverages prior to diving could cause dehydration. This in turn can increase the risk for decompression illness (DCI), also known as "the bends" or "caisson disease." During basic open-water training, divers are commonly taught to avoid alcohol until after the day's diving is complete, and even to consider avoiding alcohol until the entire dive vacation is over.
Even when diving in economically developing countries, many dive operations will not serve alcohol to divers until after the dive. But what about tobacco?
Smoking seems to be much less taboo among divers. I have observed divemasters and other experienced divers smoke cigarettes just before diving, during the surface interval, and after completing the dive series.
Most smokers are likely aware of the health implications of consuming tobacco but choose to smoke despite the risks. However, divers who smoke are likely not aware of its possible effect on DCI. Does Smoking Increase the Risk of DCI?
A review of the medical literature as it pertains to scuba diving and tobacco use provides very little information on whether smoking increases the risk of DCI. There is reason to believe that medical conditions caused by cigarettes (e.g., emphysema or atherosclerosis, a narrowing of the blood vessels by hard plaque and cholesterol deposits) could predispose a diver to a serious dive injury such as arterial gas embolism or decompression sickness, the two forms of DCI. Some of these smoking-related diseases can be present without the diver's knowledge. It is conceivable, then, that seemingly healthy smokers might be at greater risk for DCI.
An internet search using two popular search engines (Google and Yahoo) returns some information, but consists largely of opinion articles that typically recommend against smoking and diving for the reasons cited above. Until recently, there have been no studies specifically addressing the possible relationship between cigarette smoking and DCI.
 The Smoking & Diving Study
Data collected by Divers Alert Network (DAN) on divers with DCI include information on the severity of divers' symptoms and their smoking history. Between the years 1989 and 1999, more than 4,000 records of DCI were obtained. These records were carefully reviewed and analyzed by researchers at Duke University and DAN. The conclusions, which have been recently published in the December 2003 edition of Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine (volume 74, page 1271), suggest that smoking cigarettes, independent of other risk factors, may cause divers with DCI to manifest more severe symptoms than non-smokers.
DCI encompasses a range of symptom severity, from mild itching and / or joint pain to convulsions, unconsciousness and death. The above-mentioned study, entitled "Cigarette Smoking and Decompression Illness Severity: A Retrospective Study in Recreational Divers," revealed that heavy smokers (more than 15 pack-years) tended to develop more severe symptoms of DCI than lighter smokers, who in turn had more severe symptoms that nonsmokers. A pack-year is defined as smoking a pack of cigarettes per day for a year.
Heavy Smokers See A Difference
When heavy smokers (i.e., divers who smoked a lot, not overweight smokers) were compared to nonsmokers, the heavy smokers who manifested DCI were almost twice as likely to have more severe symptoms than mild symptoms. Approximately 37 percent of injured heavy smokers showed severe symptoms, whereas only about 24 percent of nonsmokers manifested severe symptoms. About 20 percent of the injured nonsmokers showed only mild symptoms of DCI, while 14 percent of heavy smokers presented with mild symptoms.
This study did not prove that smoking predisposed divers to DCI. It did show, however, that if a diver develops DCI, the severity tends to be greater in smokers. Smoking could be a direct cause of this, perhaps by way of changes in blood vessels or the lungs.
 Smoking Associated With Other Risks?
While statistical methods were used to adjust for almost all conceivable risk factors for DCI, an alternative explanation is that smoking may be linked to some other risk factor. Further research and data are needed to confirm the theory that divers who smoke cigarettes have an increased risk of DCI. To obtain this information, one would need to know the percentage of both smokers and nonsmokers who develop DCI, information that is not yet available.
Divers may be willing to accept the long-term risks of smoking on their overall health. Perhaps the risks of cancer, lung disease or heart disease seem so remote that smokers assume that they will quit eventually before developing these diseases. With regard to diving, the notion that smoking cigarettes may be associated with more severe DCI symptoms could provide yet another reason not to smoke

The Pembrokeshire Murders and the Comfort of Formulaic True Crime Drama
https://ift.tt/39ztP4h
True crime dramas have become a staple of British television and streaming services. Their popularity seems endless and ever growing. Episodes are devoured at incredible rates as the true stories behind the dramatizations are the start of many an internet k-hole.
The British true crime drama has fallen into a somewhat formulaic way of being made. The narratives are almost classical; a clear, yet flawed hero, triumphing over an unquestionably evil villain. The focus is either on the lead police officer investigating the case, or the perpetrator of the crimes. Both or one of them is usually white, they are almost always men. If the focus is on the villain, it’s to show that he is irredeemably cruel, and a master manipulator with those closest to him suffering the most. If the focus is on the hero, he is usually approachably attractive, stern and focused when it comes to work yet soft centred, and he has a personal life that has fallen or is falling apart. All played out in front of a backdrop of grim, overcast skies that are all too familiar.
The Pembrokeshire Murders fits all of these tropes. The hero is DCI Steve Wilkins (Luke Evans), who has just moved back to Wales after working at Scotland Yard in London. He is recently divorced and his relationship with his children, especially his son, is strained, but he’s trying.
The villain is John Cooper (Keith Allen), murderer and rapist who controls his long-suffering wife Pat (Caroline Berry) and is needlessly cruel to his estranged son Andrew/Adrian (Oliver Ryan).
The show centres around the reopening of the 1985 murder case of siblings Helen and Richard Thomas, and the 1989 murder of Peter and Gwenda Dixon. Also, in 2011 a sixteen-year-old girl was raped, and a 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted at gunpoint. With the help of advances in the processing of DNA evidence, DCI Wilkins not only reopens the cases, but quite quickly has an idea of who is responsible.

White House Farm episode 1 review: a powerful opener and a notorious case
By Rosie Fletcher
This isn’t a whodunnit. If you look up the real Pembrokeshire murders, you’ll immediately see a picture of the tried, convicted and imprisoned John Cooper. Likewise, the show doesn’t try to obscure him from you. There are no twists or surprises, nothing about this drama is sexed up. No glossy, airbrushed shots, no actors perfectly made up, all the performances are understated, and all the costume design is aggressively normal. The rooms they work in aren’t flashy, their resources are not high tech. There are scenes that are, possibly, intentionally dull, where officers reel off information; addresses, numbers, names etc. The point being, that mostly what happens in the investigation of these cases, even the big ones, is basic, boring, police work. Fact checking and file skimming and looking for details you’re not even sure are there.
As with most of these dramas, it does read as mild copaganda. The police are presented as humble, unsung heroes who have to be constantly at the ready and willing to work ungodly hours, all the while asking for nothing but justice on behalf of the victims they serve. It’s a nice image. The idea that rigorous and thorough work will, without fail, lead to results, and in this case, convictions.
While there’s no doubt that hard work is involved, what often gets skipped over, or heaped under the umbrella of police work, is the enormous amount of luck involved in these cases, like the eventual apprehension of The Yorkshire Ripper or the arrest of Dennis Nilsen. Luck in these shows feels inevitable or divine almost. For their transgressions, these men were destined to be caught, and by their virtue and the purity of their desire to do good, the police were destined to catch.
For DCI Wilkins, the lucky break came after looking for a picture of Cooper during the time of the 1989 murders, and coming up empty handed, only to learn by chance that he appeared as a contestant on the darts gameshow Bullseye that exact same year. It is with luck also that they find the shorts they suspect he was wearing at the time of the murder, and luck that there was still a small flake of one of the victim’s blood on it.
In the real life case, it’s likely there was a lot more detail to grapple with, but when you’re condensing an investigation that took 5 years into three episodes of TV, of course only the most pertinent details make the cut, and tropes that are familiar, exactly true to life or not, make the telling of this story easier still.
With the knowledge that there are details missing, some facts have been altered for the show (all covered in a disclaimer at the start), and that the ending is already known, what makes these dramas so compelling?
The fact that most of these shows focus on serial killers, murderers and/or rapists is no coincidence. The most heinous of crimes, the ones people find hard to wrap their heads around, are the stories that sell the best. The human condition has not yet evolved past rubbernecking at disaster. But there is more to it…
In the case of The Pembrokeshire Murders, the performances are very much contributing factors. DCI Wilkins as a character on paper, probably wouldn’t read as incredibly interesting, but Evans gives him nuance and depth with the simplest of looks and gestures. He is someone to be relied upon, someone to get a pint with, an elevated everyman. On the flip side, Allen plays the bitter and unfeeling John Cooper with such ease it’s easy to forget that he’s acting at all. There are some looks Allen throws at other cast members that are truly shudder inducing and although his fits of rage are deeply unpleasant, he is at his most terrifying when saying very little or nothing at all.
There is not a misstep from any cast member in fact, and despite the faint hint of a cheesy line every now and again, (that seems bound to occur with any tale where good triumphs over evil), the world that has been created feels complete, defined and honest.

The Jane Doe Murders Review: Compassionate True Crime Doc Provides Closure
By Tony Sokol
It’s no surprise that well-made and well-cast shows are popular, of course, but when it comes to true crime, there seems to be something else that gives it the edge. Another reason we devour them over and over again with grim satisfaction: They are oddly comforting. Despite the stacked odds and hiccups along the way, the bad guy will get his comeuppance. Doing the right thing will ultimately lead to victory. Those that were suffering will suffer less after justice is served.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Watching a show like The Pembrokeshire Murders means not having to experience the years of waiting and unsureness, instead we are handed the story as a complete thing, with a beginning and an end, the end being where the comfort lies. Rather than instilling us with fear, knowing that these things happened to real people, it gives us hope that should anything as awful happen to us or our loved ones, that this would be the outcome, that we’d have the luck of the divine, that we’d get the virtuous DCI determined to find the truth. It is comforting to know that there is one more bad man safely locked away, despite it having no impact on our immediate reality or safety. There is solace in the idea that there are good policemen out there, somewhere. When there are so many true stories of injustice and cases falling apart and people doing wrong and getting away with it, it’s no wonder that viewers flock to shows that prove, every now and again, things go right. The Pembrokeshire Murders encompasses all of this in a succinct, and accomplished example of British true crime done well.
The Pembrokeshire Murders is available to watch now on ITV Hub

India continues to be on the ‘Priority Watch List’ of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) for lack of adequate intellectual property (IP) rights protection and enforcement, the USTR said in its Annual Special 301 Report
Tumblr media
Key highlights of the report: India remained one of the most challenging economies for IP enforcement and protection. While India made “meaningful progress” to enhance IP protection and enforcement in some areas over the past year, it did not resolve recent and long-standing challenges, and created new ones. These long-standing concerns were aboutinnovators being able to receive, maintain and enforce patents particularly in the pharmaceutical sector; concerns over copyright laws not incentivising the creation and commercialisation of content; and an outdated trade secrets framework. The report also mentioned high customs duties on medical devices and Information and Communications Technology.  Important Info : Special 301 Report? The Special 301 Report is prepared annually by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) that identifies trade barriers to United States companies and products due to the intellectual property laws, such as copyright, patents and trademarks, in other countries. The Special 301 Report is published pursuant to Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 as amended by Section 1303 of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988.The Special 301 Report was first published in 1989.  Source : The Hindu ( International ) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy The Supreme Court held that the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is mandatory for admission to medical colleges run by religious and linguistic minority communities.
Tumblr media
Key highlights of the judgement: Admissions solely through NEET for graduate and postgraduate medical/dental courses does not violate any fundamental and religious rights of minorities. NEET would apply for both aided and unaided medical colleges run by minorities. The rights available under Article 30 are not violated by provisions carved out in Section 10D of the MCI Act and the Dentists Act and Regulations framed by MCI/DCI. The rights of trade, business and occupation or religious rights “do not come in the way of securing transparency and recognition of merits in admissions”. The right to freedom of trade or business is not absolute. It is subject to “reasonable restriction in the interest of the students’ community to promote merit, recognition of excellence, and to curb the malpractices. Regulating academics and imposing reasonable restrictions to ensure educational standards are in national and public interest. NEET is intended to check several maladies which crept into medical education, to prevent capitation fee by admitting students which are lower in merit and to prevent exploitation, profiteering, and commercialisation of education. A uniform entrance test qualifies the test of proportionality and is reasonable.  Important Info : Background: The judgment was based on a challenge by the colleges to several notifications issued by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Dental Council of India (DCI) under Sections 10D of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, and the Dentists Act, 1948, for uniform entrance examinations.  Source : The Hindu ( Education) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy The Task Force on National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) submitted its Final Report on NIP for FY 2019-25 to the Union Minister for Finance

Sectors such as energy (24%), roads (18%), urban (17%) and railways (12%) amount to around 71% of the projected infrastructure investments in India. The Centre (39%) and States (40%) are expected to have almost equal share in implementing the NIP in India, followed by the private sector (21%). The Task Force has recommended that three Committees be setup:a Committee to monitor NIP progress and eliminate delays; a Steering Committee in each Infrastructure ministry level for following up implementation; and a Steering Committee in DEA for raising financial resources for the NIP. The NIP project database would be hosted on India Investment Grid (IIG) shortly to provide visibility to the NIP and help in its financing with prospective investors; domestic and foreign, able to access updated project level information.  Important Info : Background: Union Finance Minister in her Budget speech 2019-20 announced that Rs. 100 lakh crore would be invested on infrastructure over the next five years.  Source : PIB ( Health) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy Men have appeared likelier than women to die of COVID-19. Trials by researchers in US will seek to find out whether the answer lies in two sex hormones in women — estrogen and progesterone
Tumblr media
About: Estrogen and progesterone are the two main sex hormones that characterise a woman. Estrogen helps her develop female physical features and also maintains her reproductive system. Progesterone is secreted by a temporary endocrine gland that the body produces during the second half of the menstrual cycle, and helps prepare the body for possible pregnancy after ovulation. The male body too has estrogen and produces progesterone, both in smaller amounts. Now, two teams in the US are testing the theory that these hormones help women fight COVID-19 better.  Source : Indian Express ( Science & Technology ) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy OZONE HOLE The European Union’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) announced that a hole in the Arctic ozone layer, believed to be the biggest reported, has closed. The ozone hole’s closing was because of a phenomenon called the polar vortex, and not because of reduced pollution levels due to Covid-19 lockdowns around the world, reports said.
Tumblr media
About: Ozone (chemically, a molecule of three oxygen atoms) is found mainly in the upper atmosphere, an area called the stratosphere, between 10 and 50 km from the earth’s surface. Though it is talked of as a layer, ozone is present in the atmosphere in rather low concentrations. Even at places where this layer is thickest, there are not more than a few molecules of ozone for every million air molecules. But they perform a very important function. By absorbing the harmful ultraviolet radiations from the sun, the ozone molecules eliminate a big threat to life forms on earth. UV rays can cause skin cancer and other diseases and deformities in plants and animals.  Important Info : Ozone holes The ‘ozone hole’ is not really a hole — it refers to a region in the stratosphere where the concentration of ozone becomes extremely low in certain months. The ‘ozone holes’ most commonly talked about are the depletions over Antarctica, forming each year in the months of September, October and November, due to a set of special meteorological and chemical conditions that arise at the South Pole, and can reach sizes of around 20 to 25 million sq km.Such holes are also spotted over the North Pole, but owing to warmer temperatures than the South Pole, the depletions here are much smaller in size. Before this year, the last sizable Arctic ozone hole was reported in 2011. Tumblr media
About: HCARD could be effective for frontline health care officials dealing with COVID-19 patients in delivering services while maintaining mandatory physical distancing. This robot can be controlled and monitored by a nursing booth with a Control Station having such features as navigation, drawer activation for providing medicines and food to patients, sample collection and audio-visual communication. The cost of this device is less than five lakh rupees and the weight is less than 80 kilograms.  Source : All India Radio ( Health ) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy MULTI-SYSTEM INFLAMMATORY STATE UK's Paediatric Intensive Care Society (PICS) said it had observed an "apparent rise" in the number of children, of all ages, with a "multi-system inflammatory state requiring intensive care", and doctors believe it could be coronavirus-related.
Tumblr media
About: Multi-system inflammatory state is a rare illness that causes inflammation of the blood vessels, which leads to low blood pressure. It affects the entire body as it causes a build-up of fluid in the lungs and other organs. This condition is similar to Kawasaki disease. Patients suffering from it require intensive care to support the lungs, heart and other organs.  Important Info : According to PICS, there were also overlapping symptoms of toxic shock syndrome and atypical Kawasaki disease. Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare life-threatening condition caused when certain bacteria enter the body and release harmful toxins. If not treated in time, the condition could be fatal.Kawasaki disease is an acute inflammatory disease of the blood vessels and usually occurs in children below the age of five. The inflammation caused by the disease affects many parts of the body but has a more serious effect on the heart.  Source : Indian Express ( Health) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy IRRFAN KHAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on the demise of actor Irrfan Khan.
