DPVKOM ruft zu weiterem Warnstreik bei DHL Hub Leipzig GmbH auf Die Fachgewerkschaft DPVKOM hat die Mitarbeiter der DHL Hub Leipzig GmbH am Donnerstag zu einem erneuten Warnstreik aufgerufen. Der Ausstand sollte mit Beginn der Nachtschicht beginnen und voraussichtlich von etwa 300 Streikenden, möglicherweise sogar mehr, unterstützt werden. Die Beschäftigten wurden aufgerufen, bis Samstagvormittag…

Fortschritt ist, wenn man weniger laut schreien muss

Für die Führung durch den DHL Hub Leipzig bekommen wir Funk-Headsets ausgeteilt. Dadurch müssen wir uns nicht wie Entenküken um den Leiter der Führung scharen, sondern können auch mal ein paar Meter in die eine oder andere Richtung das Gelände erforschen. Wer Fragen stellen will, muss nahe beim Führungsleiter stehen, der die Frage dann routiniert für alle wiederholt: “Frage war ...”, was bei Konferenzen leider fast immer vergessen wird, auch von mir. 

Die Headsets schonen die Stimme des Erklärers, denn in den Sortierhallen ist es zwar leiser als früher, aber nicht leise. Früher war es lauter, weil die Sendungen in Kippschalen lagen (hier erklärt mit Video) und an der richtigen Stelle der Sortieranlage ausgekippt wurden. Die Kippschale fällt dann in ihre Ausgangsposition zurück, und das macht Lärm. Die Anlage, die wir besichtigen, ist leiser, weil hier ein anderes System zum Einsatz kommen, ein Querbandsortierer laut dieser Erklärung ohne Video: Das Förderband besteht aus einzelnen Segmenten, auf denen sich ein zweites Band quer zur Fahrtrichtung nach rechts oder links bewegt, wenn die Ausstiegshaltestelle der Sendung gekommen ist.

Vom Headset habe ich kein Foto, weil ich erst am Abend des nächsten Tages merke, dass hier etwas Aufschreibenswertes vorgefallen ist. Ich kannte Funk-Headsets bisher nur von Konferenzen, auf der re:publica gibt es sie manchmal und besonders gut finanzierte Veranstaltungen nutzen sie für Simultanübersetzungen.

DHL Express is a division of the German logistics company Deutsche Post, providing international express mail services. Deutsche Post is the world’s largest logistics company, operating worldwide; DHL is a world market leader in sea and air mail. Originally founded in 1969 to deliver documents between San Francisco and Honolulu, the company expanded its service worldwide in the 70s. The company was primarily interested in offshore and inter-continental deliveries, but the success of FedEx prompted their own intra-US expansion in the 80s. They aggressively expanded to countries that could not be served by any other delivery service, such as the Soviet Union, Eastern Bloc, Iraq, Iran, China, Vietnam, and North Korea. In 1998, Deutsche Post began acquiring shares, finally reaching majority ownership in 2001, and completed the purchase in 2002. Deutsche Post then effectively absorbed DHL into its Express division. DHL headquarters are part of the Deutsche Post HQ in Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Northwestern Germany. The European hub is in Leipzig, Sachsen, Eastern Germany. Their competitors include FedEx, UPS, TNT, the US Postal Service and UK’s Royal Mail. DHL offers worldwide services, including deliveries to countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Myanmar. As it is German-owned, it is not affected by US trade embargoes or sanctions and will ship to places like Cuba and North Korea.

Logistics companies fear the return of hard borders

DURING the day, Leipzig’s airport is quiet. It is at night that the airfield comes to life. Next to the runway a yellow warehouse serves as the global sorting hub for DHL, a delivery firm owned by Deutsche Post of Germany. A huge extension, which opened in October, means it can sort 150,000 parcels each hour, says Ken Allen, DHL’s CEO. It was built as business soared. But the express-delivery industry faces a new challenge: the return of trade barriers due to the protectionist bent of Donald Trump and because of Brexit.

The slower-moving shipping and air-cargo business has long been in the doldrums as a result of slow overall growth in trade in recent years. Yet the rise of cross-border e-commerce has still meant booming business for express-delivery firms. On January 31st UPS revealed record revenues for the fourth quarter of 2016; FedEx and DHL are expected to report similarly buoyant results next month. Since 2008 half of the increase in express-delivery volumes has come from shoppers buying items online from another country.

Falling trade barriers have greatly helped them. When DHL and FedEx were getting going, in the 1970s, there was little demand for international express deliveries. Packages often got stuck in customs for weeks and were heavily taxed. The expansion of free-trade areas, lower tariffs and the internet brought years of growth. But after Mr Trump’s threats to raise tariffs on goods from China and Mexico, together with the indication last month from Theresa May, Britain’s prime minister, that the country will leave the EU’s customs union, there are widespread fears that the favourable tailwinds enjoyed by the industry for decades are gone. “It’s all a real nightmare,” groans David Jinks of ParcelHero, a British parcel broker which works with DHL, FedEx and UPS.

Start with Brexit. More physical border checks between Britain and Europe would do little direct damage. Most packages arriving in Britain have already been checked for drugs and dangerous items. Goods from outside the EU go through customs 95% of the time without any inspection or delay.

Instead, post-Brexit costs will probably come from long wrangles over which of 19,000 customs codes should be applied to a consignment. As an example of what could happen, Halloween costumes from China often get stuck at Britain’s border while customs officials work out whether they are toys or children’s clothes, which attract different duties. Such complexity would force delivery firms to put up their prices to customers, Mr Jinks says. Sending an item from Britain to Switzerland (outside the EU) costs 150% more than it does to Italy (inside the EU).

The most severe impact on business would come from higher tariffs, which would hurt demand for cross-border imports and deliveries in favour of local goods. This is where Mr Trump’s threats come into focus. A trade war would hit the massive volume of consignments that DHL’s, FedEx’s and UPS’s planes carry every day in and out of America.

For the moment, a customs exemption exists for packages worth under $800. This means that higher tariffs on a Chinese watch imported in bulk into the United States, for instance, could be avoided by an American ordering direct from Alibaba, a Chinese retailer, for delivery direct to their home. But if Mr Trump is serious about cutting imports, he could get rid of this exemption. It was only last March that Barack Obama increased it to $800 from the previous $200. If it were lowered or eliminated by executive order, logistics-industry people would really panic.

They are putting a brave face on things. DHL’s Mr Allen has emphasised that “globalisation is here to stay”, whatever Mr Trump does. UPS’s boss, David Abney, hopes the president is not really against trade agreements. Even more telling are the actions of Fred Smith, FedEx’s founder and CEO. Unscharfe Eindrücke aus der Logistikbranche

Ich vertrete das Techniktagebuch bei einer Führung durch den DHL Hub Leipzig. Sonst darf man hier bei Besucherführungen nicht fotografieren, aber es handelt sich um eine spezielle Social-Media-Angelegenheit und wir dürfen. Die Führung findet nachts statt, weil das Frachtgeschäft nachts abgewickelt wird. Das weiß auch Google Maps:

Zwischen elf und ein Uhr nachts landen hier über sechzig Frachtflugzeuge, und morgens sind alle wieder weg.

Die Berichterstattung über die kilometerlangen Sortieranlagen bereitet mir jetzt allerdings Probleme. Erstens hat so ein Frachtflughafen außer für die dort Beschäftigten wenig mit Alltagstechnik zu tun. Aber gut, hier wurde auch schon über die Lineale der NASA berichtet, über slowenische CP/M-Computer, Pegelansagegeräte und chilenische Riesenteleskope, da kommt es auf ein paar Kilometer Sortieranlagen nicht an. Zweitens braucht Technikbetrachtung Zeit und davon hat man zu wenig, wenn man in drei Stunden ein Flughafengelände von der Größe eines Flughafengeländes besichtigt.

Drittens sind – bedingt durch Dunkelheit, Eile, Inkompetenz und Handygeiz – alle meine Fotos unscharf, unansehnlich und unverständlich. Es ist nicht mehr wie früher, als Social-Media-Influencer noch ein ordentlicher Handwerksberuf war. Heute darf das jeder Narr:

Da ist es auch nicht mehr so schlimm, dass man bestimmte Dinge nicht mal bei einer Fotografierführung fotografieren darf – vermutlich hätte man auf meinen Bildern ohnehin nur eine Eule am Horizont oder das Innere meiner Jackentasche erkannt.

Unfotografierter Gegenstand 1: Ein Handvenenscanner an der Sicherheitskontrolle, die alle Mitarbeiter und Besucher beim Betreten des Gebäudes durchlaufen müssen. In der Wikipedia gibt es ein Bild davon. Mitarbeiter müssen sich mit einer RFID-Karte und dem zusätzlichen Handscan identifizieren. Für Gäste reicht das übliche Flughafenprozedere: man legt alles ab, die Sachen werden geröntgt, und obwohl man das Kleingeld wirklich nicht in den Hosentaschen vergessen hat, piepst es trotzdem und man muss zur Nachkontrolle.

Unfotografierter Gegenstand 2 ist in Wirklichkeit ein fotografierter Gegenstand, aber im gleichen Moment erfuhr ich, dass man ihn nicht fotografieren darf. Deshalb sage ich nur, dass die Röntgenkontrolle der Pakete ganz oder teilweise automatisch passiert und durch eine Anlage erledigt wird, die ihren Ursprung wohl in einem anderen Zweig des Flughafengeschäfts hat, denn auf ihrem Display ist viel von Bags die Rede.

Den Unfotografierten Gegenstand 3 hätte ich zwar fotografieren dürfen, nur war er an der Hand von Mitarbeitern befestigt, die man wiederum nicht fotografieren sollte: Beim Einsortieren der Pakete in die Frachtcontainer scannen die Mitarbeiter den Barcode der Sendungen mit einem Scanner, den sie am Fingerrücken tragen. So sieht das bei UPS aus, bei DHL war es ähnlich.

Aber es ist nicht so, als gäbe es gar keine Bilder von der fortschrittlichen Frachtflughafentechnik! Hier ist ein Milchautomat an der Shuttlebus-Haltestelle (der helle Fleck im Hintergrund):

Hungry bellyholds help Brussels pass the 500,000 ton flown cargo milestone

Full bellyholds helped Brussels Airport terminal cross the 500,000 lot milestone of flown cargo on Dec 7, doing this for the very first time since DHL Exhibit moved its Western hub from the Belgian international airport to Leipzig in Germany.

"Although no all-time high, this is a symbolic milestone for all of us and our cargo community", said Steven Polmans, mind of cargo and logistics at Brussels International airport.
