NY Giants: A promising future?
The Giants are done for This Year, but what a difference a Year makes! Brian Daboll & his Coaching Staff have made believers out of The Players, & restored respectability to the franchise. The greatest improvement, has to be the play of QB Daniel Jones. I'll be the 1st to admit that I was less than pleased w/ the choice of Jones; I expected Dwayne Haskins. I was baffled by replacing Eli Manning w/ Jones. I questioned his effectiveness & leadership over a 2 Time Super Bowl Champion. I found Jones to be slow, indecisive, & inconsistent On Field; he looked like a Country Bumpkin. My nickname for him became 'Goober'.
Over his 1st few Seasons, Goober didn't disappoint. His Stats were a joke. Giants Management changed Coaches, but Jones showed little progress. This is what makes Brian Daboll so special. He speaks Daniel Jones' language. This Season was a Career Season for Goober. His Football Aptitude has increased exponentially. He has caught up to The Game. His leadership has always been touted by Giants Players & Staff, but now We can SEE it. He has shown more decisiveness, & his accuracy has noticeably improved. I have to give Credit where it's due, & say for The Record that Daniel Jones IS an NFL Quarterback- way to go Goober!
Giants Universe is expressing mixed feelings over the 38- 7 Loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Some feel The Jints were playing w/ 'House Money', while others lament Big Blue not playing their best game. They needed near perfect play against the #1 Seed, but Philly took advantage of EVERY MISTAKE that The Giants made, & then made them pay. The blown coverages, overthrown balls, & bad eyes from the Receiver Corps will make for great film study during the Off Season. On the plus side, although Big Blue's Defense allowed 28 Points in the 1st Half, They held the Eagles to just 3 Points for nearly all of the 2nd Half. That's a small victory to take into consideration.
Giants Players seemed more disappointed about the End of their Run, than losing to Philly. A few of the Players interviewed Post Game spoke on how the locker room will probably look different next Season. This Team has grown close in their bid for respectability. While it's true that some Players will not return, it's also true that Free Agents are looking @ Daboll's Giants. I expect an upgrade on any Players that eventually leave. Daniel Jones & Saquon Barkley are the elephants in the Giants Living Room. Anyone speculating on either Player leaving, is creating false drama. Daniel Jones has been effective under Daboll, & deserves @ least 3 more Years to show how much more he can improve. He's already on my Top 5 'Scrambling QB' List.
As for Saquon, he has said over & over that he wants to play for Big Blue until he retires. Before This Season, Barkley showed a lot of potential, but seemed as delicate as a Race Horse. This Season, he looked like the RB that everyone anticipated when he was drafted. He always showed moxy, but This Year, Saquon showed durability. Giants Management would be bad businessmen if they let go of a Top Draft Pick, just as he is making a Return on their investment. Personally, I don't see the need for many changes to The Giants Roster. There is a great mix of Rookies & Veterans, chemistry, & camaraderie. I see them getting better w/ experience.
I don't know what Giants Management will do during the Off Season, but I expect Jones & Barkley to return w/ a majority of the Players on the current Roster. There's room for fine tuning on Offense, Defense, & Special Teams, but that doesn't necessitate tossing the Baby w/ the bath water.
