Happy Birthday greetings are due David Jackson was born 14th April 1947 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, photographed here circa 1972. He is a saxophonist, flautist, and composer who is best known for his work with the progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator throughout the 70’s and for their 2005 reunion tour. His speciality was electric saxophones that used octave devices, or are put through a wah-wah pedal, and other powerful amplification. Jackson is also known for his work with physically and mentally disabled people, enabling them to make music through the use of a technology known as Soundbeam (of which he is also a trainer, system designer and builder.) A documentary about his work with autistic children was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1998.

Honestly, Saddler Berenson is such a fun thing for us to forget about. I love David, we all know this. But I don't gloss over his foibles. And those that dislike David always bring up his apparent murder of Tobias, the murder attempt of Jake, him betraying the Animorphs...
Saddler was a dying kid who was in an elevator one moment and was missing the next. David replaced him. No matter what happened there, Saddler's dead. He's not found later, his body isn't even recovered. He's just gone. Whether David killed him or left him somewhere to die slowly, Saddler didn't make it.
Rachel and Jake don't really think about it ever again. He was an annoying, unpleasant cousin IIRC. Probably their trauma over David, what he did to them and what they did to him (especially our girl Rachel) eclipses it.
But. as the reader, we forget about Saddler too. Arguably, the biggest sin David committed, and he's left by the wayside. It's a little fascinating.

Some quietly influential musicians end up being like that thanks to the company they keep and which gives them the legitimacy that results in many people checking you. For instance, J.D. Souther might be one of those with a lot of famous friends, including The Eagles, who actually made a comeback by covering one of his songs and some of them also worked with him on his own LPs. Why shouldn't they, he's a solid songwriter and I'm sure the scene that surrounded him give him many benefits, including a variety of chances to hone his tunes. However, I get your questions – where's his quiet influence? Well, I would say he was not the main characters of his environment, he was a supporting one, yet the places would be less without them.
