Andrew WK has a new album coming out.   Two responses to this:

-this article, which explains in exhaustive detail the ongoing performance art piece which is the Andrew WK “character”

-this twitter thread, which heavily implies that Andrew WK is a white nationalist, mostly through his association with Gavin McInness

It strikes me that the article, which is ostensibly there to celebrate WK’s genius as a performance artist, makes just as good a case for his being at least a tad proto-fascist as the twitter thread.  The article talks about how one of the many things WK has claimed his initials stand for is White Killer - how he represents his alter ego/secret self Steev Mike with the number 55, which is awfully reminiscent of the way certain other groups use the number 88 - and points out the thread of violence that runs through all of WK’s lyrics, how he persists in conflating violence with joy, violence with freedom, violence with celebration, in a way which might be read as downright Neitzschean.  The writer of the article believes that this is all part of WK’s “art”, as he is one of those Nolanesque people who thinks that hidden darkness is the magic ingredient that makes entertainment into something more substantial.   The twitter thread suggests otherwise.

The thing that strikes me about WK’s origin story is that he chose his uniform - the white t-shirt and jeans - because to him it represented blankness. His aim with all the nonsense about his being a manufactured pop product with multiple people playing the same character was to create himself as an empty figure, without identity, without history.  No context, only impulse; no back, only forward. The game of non-identity that WK has been playing for the past decade is only fun if you’re already at the top of the heap and it’s better for you if nobody remembers how you got there.  The downside of dissolving your identity to such a degree, of course, is that accusations like the above stick real easy when there’s no you to defend yourself with.

Interestingly it’s the twitter thread itself that offers him an out here by mentioning WK’s association with David Tibet’s band Current 93, which is what I would describe as Christian apocalypse music and is only fascist insofar as all apocalyptic/millennial movements are inherently anti-life; if you read WK’s project as being similar to Tibet’s you could see him as being a dude who is just very into ego death, the annihilation of the self, and ritual for ritual’s sake, which explains the numerology and the PCP references and the death disco but not unfortunately the fact that the club he co-owned booked a white supremacist punk festival and had to shut down as a result.

Anyway you asked for an implication and here’s one - you know who else tried to convince us that white meant blank
