DeMatteis Student Spends Summer Building Pedestrian Bridge in Africa
Annastasia Moore, a Hofstra Civil Engineering student from Morris, Alabama, spent eight weeks of her summer break with Engineers in Action (EIA), constructing a vital pedestrian bridge for the Dvokolwako and Kazandondo communities in Eswatini, a small country east of South Africa. This bridge will provide community members with safe access to clean water and food.
Moore’s trip was part of the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science’s OverSEAS program, which aims to prepare engineering students for careers with a global perspective.

DeMatteis School Receives National Grant for Operating System Development
Jianchen Shan, Hofstra assistant professor of computer science, received a National Science Foundation grant to develop a high-performance cloud operating system (OS) that can adapt to the dynamic cloud environment. Called Octopus OS, this new system will run in a virtual machine – completely in the cloud – as opposed to a physical computer.

Community Connections: Engineering Students Help Local Soup Kitchen Improve Operations
Hofstra University and the Mary Brennan INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) have been more than just neighbors for decades, with the campus community volunteering in a variety of ways to help the organization combat hunger and homelessness on Long Island.
This year, the partnership also became an academic assignment – literally, as industrial engineering students focused their senior design projects on helping the INN improve its operations, from the flow of its warehouse to space inventory and food management and organization.
