First day on the trail

We saw a few things in Buffalo before hitting the trail.

We were told that the observation deck on the City Hall building would open this morning, but it wasn’t quite ready when we stopped by. (It has been closed for repairs since May.) We did get to see some of the art deco detail and stained glass in the council chamber.

We found the starting point of the canal in Buffalo, took a few shots, and got on our way. There was a section of the lake front that was closed, so we had to double back through town to get to the trail. The bridge was to Canada — just across the Niagara River.

We bounced a bit between trail and road, but it was mainly trail today (shown below). We saw quite a few bikers on the trail today, but only one had packs who looked like he is riding the full trail. We got to Lakeport mid-afternoon. It was a 35 mile day, and the weather was gorgeous!

Thus started a hotel-building boom and a fevered pitch of short-term rental (such as Airbnb and Vrbo) conversions. So far this year, 926 new hotel rooms have opened—on top of 2,304 in 2018 and 1,219 in 2017. (Another 4,567 are under construction with more than 3,300 in the proposal process.)

As housecleaning smoothed fresh sheets downtown, short-term rentals flourished in the neighborhoods, including in East Nashville, known for on-trend restaurants, quirky shops, and an artsy population. Visitors wanted to stay where the locals live—although not all the locals were crazy about it.

Last year Host Compliance, a San Francisco–based company that helps cities enforce their short-term rental regulations, got more anonymous tips about illegal operators in Nashville than it did for any other city. Currently, there are an estimated 1,000 illegal short-term rentals operating in Nashville. (Approximately 2,188 legit permits were issued last year and more than 700 so far in 2019.)

That’s the background that’s led to a shift. “You aren’t seeing a trend, you are seeing an evolution,” says Robert Baum, one of the founders of Bedderman Lodging, owner of the soon-to-open FieldHouse Jones, of this newest crop of accommodations.

“Airbnb has helped people become accustomed to someone not being on staff 24/7,” explains Micah Lacher, president of Anchor Investments, which owns the Russell hotel.

Five new hotels (well, four hotels and one motel) are bucking both the Airbnb trend and the domination of big international chains through local connections, distinctive amenities, and unexpected addresses.

Housed in a former church, The Russell has revamped its original spaces for a new generation of travelers.

Historically, Dickerson Pike was the old Buffalo Trail (bronze buffalo sculptures mark the route), and country music star Hank Williams Jr. is said to have swum in the pool of the Key Motel that is being turned into the retro-vibe Dive.

“Most hoteliers rebrand motels as hotels, and I think that’s a bit disingenuous,” says Lyon Porter, co-owner of the Dive Motel & Swim Club, as well as other properties in East Nashville and Brooklyn. “We are tapping into the romantic nostalgia of a motel and also creating what we want out of a motel experience in the present day.”

The Dive Motel & Swim Club

Scheduled to open this summer, the Dive Motel is a Palm Springs–style swim club on Dickerson Pike, which is northeast of downtown, but not in the hip, tourist-centric area. Historically, Dickerson Pike was the old Buffalo Trail (bronze buffalo sculptures mark the route), and country music star Hank Williams Jr. is said to have swum in the pool of the Key Motel that is being turned into the retro-vibe Dive.

“Most hoteliers rebrand motels as hotels, and I think that’s a bit disingenuous,” says Lyon Porter, co-owner of the Dive Motel & Swim Club, as well as other properties in East Nashville and Brooklyn. “We are tapping into the romantic nostalgia of a motel and also creating what we want out of a motel experience in the present day.”

Standout amenities: The motel will have retro-heavy design (aesthetics are an important element of Porter’s other properties), a swim club locals can join, and disco balls in every room. While many Airbnb listings warn that they are not party properties, the Dive is all about hosting good times.

20 rooms; starting at $189. The first hotel from Strategic Hospitality, a restaurant company owned by two local brothers who helped change the Nashville food scene.

Standout amenities: Located in the heart of the Broadway strip, and once home to one of the brothers’ successful honky-tonk bars, this ambitious four-story destination features ax-throwing, an indoor grassy area with a large screen for movie watching, a rooftop bar, a restaurant, and a coffee shop.

The third floor houses the hotel rooms, which are in the center of all the Broadway action but also tucked away, thanks to a designated elevator, locked floors, and special glass panes in the floor-to-ceiling windows to block out the noise of the all-night revelry while still providing a view (white noise machines and earplugs are provided too). A vending machine is stocked with the kinds of things travelers often forget—such as toiletries, snacks, phone chargers, and hair ties—sold at non-inflated prices.

FieldHouse Jones

93 rooms; starting at $209. Building on its model of successful, quirky boutique hotels in Chicago neighborhoods, owner Bedderman Lodging is opening FieldHouse Jones in East Nashville this summer. Twenty-one of the rooms are suites with kitchenettes, and the business model calls for listing up to 20% of rooms on home-sharing websites, but FieldHouse Jones is definitely a hotel with the service to back it up.

Standout amenities: An all-day snack bar, underground parking (unheard of in this neighborhood), and a rooftop deck with views of downtown should appeal to both locals and tourists. The idea is to be a creative hub within a creative neighborhood in a largely creative city, a place where locals can meet and hang out to collaborate on projects.

Eight rooms; starting at $249 per night. No, that’s not a typo, the second B in the B&B is for beverage. Located at the Five Points intersection—literally and figuratively the epicenter of East Nashville—the Vandyke features an open-air bar that physically connects guest rooms to the buzzy neighborhood outside its doors. A guest-only rooftop deck provides a little privacy for those who don’t want to mingle with locals.

Standout amenities: Each of the luxury hotel’s eight rooms is named after a different beverage—Champagne, whiskey, wine, beer, tequila, and rum among them—with decor and specific glassware in keeping with that drink.

How New Nashville Hotels Are Bucking the Airbnb Trend

When Nashville’s current tourism/bachelorette/travel boom kicked into high gear, one thing quickly became obvious: There were not enough places for people to sleep. Thus started a hotel-building boom and a fevered pitch of short-term rental (such as Airbnb and Vrbo) conversions. So far this year, 926 new hotel rooms have opened—on top of 2,304 in 2018 and 1,219 in 2017. (Another 4,567 are under construction with more than 3,300 in the proposal process.)

As housecleaning smoothed fresh sheets downtown, short-term rentals flourished in the neighborhoods, including in East Nashville, known for on-trend restaurants, quirky shops, and an artsy population. Visitors wanted to stay where the locals live—although not all the locals were crazy about it.

Last year Host Compliance, a San Francisco–based company that helps cities enforce their short-term rental regulations, got more anonymous tips about illegal operators in Nashville than it did for any other city. Currently, there are an estimated 1,000 illegal short-term rentals operating in Nashville. (Approximately 2,188 legit permits were issued last year and more than 700 so far in 2019.)

That’s the background that’s led to a shift. “You aren’t seeing a trend, you are seeing an evolution,” says Robert Baum, one of the founders of Bedderman Lodging, owner of the soon-to-open FieldHouse Jones, of this newest crop of accommodations.

“Airbnb has helped people become accustomed to someone not being on staff 24/7,” explains Micah Lacher, president of Anchor Investments, which owns the Russell hotel.

Five new hotels (well, four hotels and one motel) are bucking both the Airbnb trend and the domination of big international chains through local connections, distinctive amenities, and unexpected addresses.

Housed in a former church, The Russell has revamped its original spaces for a new generation of travelers.

23 rooms; starting at $100. A repurposed church with restored stained-glass windows and pews turned into headboards, The Russell is perhaps East Nashville’s most talked-about transformation. While aesthetic elements of the church remain, The Russell is thoroughly modern, with a podcast recording studio available to the general public and free snacks from local purveyors in the guest rooms.

I’m taking my car to mom’s tonight; she’d posted it for sale on her work’s community thing and apparently 6 people are interested, so she’s showing it tomorrow. she’ll likely want to sell it to one of them, provided they’re not assholes.

I wasn’t.. quite ready.

I mean, it’ll be nice to cut down a little on the payments for my aunt’s car. give her the check from this one.

I don’t know, it kind of feels like one more connection to my dad that I just won’t have anymore. I know he wouldn’t care about the car; hell, he kept asking me if I’d sell it and take his car. but still. he found it for me.

I remember the day we got it. 8 years ago. it was maybe 3 days after my accident, and probably my first time back behind the wheel since then. we’d driven to maryland to get it, because it was at the dealership my dad worked at. he’d seen it on the lot and asked about it; apparently it was supposed to go to auction, but the guys had walked around the lot clicking the key and couldn’t find it; they didn’t realize the battery was dead. they told dad I could have it, and the insurance money from my totaled car covered most of it.

I remember sitting in it for the first time in the lot. it definitely felt like sitting in someone else’s car. the dashboard was all different, it was black leather instead of off-white fabric... I loved it, don’t get me wrong. I was thrilled with an all-black car. I’m going to miss that; the light leather seats and light green exterior on my aunt’s old car don’t quite feel like me.

I drove mom’s car home that day, white-knuckled and nervous. I’d driven home from dad’s plenty of times, but I’d just been in a really nasty accident. to this day I still get adrenaline rushes that reach near-panic-attack levels when cars get too close to me on the road.

that car and I have been through a lot. it’s taken me back and forth, to and from pennsylvania for 7 years. it sat in a lot 2 blocks away when I lived in that shitty house in indiana. I put a huge dent in the rear passenger-side bumper when I moved in to my apartment at UMD and didn’t see the huge concrete support when I was backing up; 6 years later and it’s still dented. it went out to eastern PA a few times within a few months for my friend’s bridal shower, a concert with the same friend, and then again for her wedding. it took me straight to pittsburgh when I drove up for a job interview. I’ve gotten out of that car feeling dizzy and like I needed a good stretch so many times. I sat in that driver’s seat and sobbed in the lot at the vet clinic in maryland before I felt okay enough to drive myself home after putting marty and then jay to sleep. I had so many rat cages in my trunk, with and without rats. there’s stains in the trunk from when A wanted to bring buffalo chicken dip to festivus and it spilled a little during the drive. I balled up my cardigan, screamed into it, and cried sitting in the lot after my first polygraph. I went through so many goddamn tape deck adapters. there was that period of time where it kept rejecting every new adapter I bought, so I just stuck with the one I had, that was only playing music through one speaker. and then a few months later I went back and got a new one and the surround-sound was glorious. I spent so many hours singing along to spotify and drumming on the wheel. city & colour and pearl jam on the drive to indiana; I remember going back after winter break my sophomore year and feeling like I Was holding my breath the entire drive; I left late because I was so anxious I was making myself feel sick, so I drove up in the dark. I remember stopping in the lot at the rest stop outside breezewood and calling mom, letting her know I was just about halfway there. I rarely sat in the back seat; I remember feeling kind of strange sitting back there to change clothes-- thank god for tinted windows. I got an air freshener with edgar allan poe’s face on it (scented like edgar allan potpourri) when we went to seattle in 2016 and it’s been hanging from my rearview mirror since then; elastic’s all stretched out and it doesn’t smell like anything anymore, but I liked the aesthetic. I rarely had to take her to the shop; most of her issues were with the drive belt and the tires. she’s got 218k miles or so on the odometer. 

I’m sure I’ll get used to this new car. the gas pedal is way touchier than I’m used to, and when it kicks it kicks. A used to make fun of my car because I could floor it and she’d accelerate so slowly it was comical. I won’t miss getting 18mpg (17.9 now...), and I won’t miss the turning radius. but 8 years of putting a little extra muscle into driving? gonna be hard to break the habit. 

sometimes I wish time would stop. or at least slow down. I still remember how I felt the first time I sat in that car. I’d want another just like it if I could get one. with better mileage and turning radius, of course, but I love that car. I don’t want to sell it. I know it’s going to happen. I guess I just don’t feel like I’ve said a proper goodbye. I just grabbed what few things I had in there and moved them to my new car after work so I could take pictures for mom. now I’m about to drive it to her house and if she sells it tomorrow... I won’t be seeing it again.

A Brief History of Clogs

The Clogs fit, wear them. The Year of my First pair of clogs was 1978, It was summer and I was really ready for Clogs…My mom had worn clogs with soles constructed from some light grained wood with the upper shoe either made of upholstery fabric or of leather. They were part of what I considered her “Uniform” it was an artist uniform if anything- consisting of any of her twenty-five or thirty hand sewn moo moo esque dresses in a variety of brightly colored flower motif Mari Meko material. Complimented by her white tights and the clogs I thought mom looked the part of the artist. When I wanted to feel tall and important I would slide on her size nines and try to navigate Clonking my way down the steep steel spiral stairs of our A-frame home.

Coveting Clogs

In the nineteen seventies, men and women wore clogs; When we had company our houseguests would slip off their clogs before they made their way down the black spiral that led to our main living area. None of them were brave enough to clog down the unfinished steps. So I was fairly proud when I could safely navigate in clogs four times to big for me. I admired the collection of Scandinavian slip-ons as I arranged them into neat-partnered rows like a shoe parking lot. I longed for some clogs of my own; they added height and a loud foreboding sound to your step, Clogs announced you were coming before you arrived. I loved the sound of clogs- the distinct clicking on a cement footpath, clacking on stone, clomping on wood and the clanging on steel steps. I was through with the silence of sneakers they were for athletes and babies. People with the patience and stamina to enjoy the process of tying shoelaces. There could be no sneaking in Scandinavia. The feet of the Swedish band Abba proved this I imagined Benny, Bjorn, Frida, and Agnetha leaping from their “arrival” helicopter in their bell-bottom jumpsuits and clogs. They knew how to make an entrance.

One of the most appealing benefits of clogs was the ease with which you could just slip them on your feet. There were no utilitarian buckles or cumbersome laces to struggle with. Like sandals, you could slide your clogs on and clickity clomp off into the sunset.

I expressed my extreme desire for clogs to my Mom and my Grandmother. My Grandma tried to appease my craving for clogs with some Dr. Schols orthopedic exercise flip-flops. These shoes were also very appealing with their buckle that worked like a lock on a diary. but there really could be no substitute for clogs. I needed them and desired them.

My grandma was suspicious of clogs saying that high heels were for ladies she suspected that clogs would make me appear more grown up than I was. I wasn’t hoping to look grown up I just wanted to feel taller. I never considered clogs as “High Heels”. I knew that Prostitutes and disco divas wore High Heels but I didn’t imagine that they clomped the streets and clogged their way silly to the bee gees and Donna Summer. From my personal experiments wearing mom’s clogs, I had found dancing to be clumsy although pleasingly clip- cloppity. The clogs worked like a cumbersome tap shoe. I danced in the living room and on our deck listening to Andy Gibb and his big Bee Gee Brothers, taping to disco was complex but my brother and I worked out some decent routines to “The Copa — Cabaña” and the Saturday Night Fever rendition of “ Night on Bald Mountain” and The Cantina Band Song from Star Wars.

The Quest For Clogs.

We Drove to Cloquet for my clogs. It was a surprise. My mom decided to take me to Berquist’s Scandinavian gift outlet that smelled of cedar wood and bayberry scented Candles. It was a store filled with sheep made out of grain Gnomes and Troll figurines, and magic rose-malled Bright orange carved ponies. Every summery mom would take me on a buying trip for her Boutique. This time I was allowed to select a pair of clogs. I chose a beige pair of clogs decorated with a strap and buckle. The leather was raw inside and the wood of the sole felt cool on my feet as I slid them on. After that day, I wore my clogs or nothing. Even though I discovered that when I tried to run often one of the clogs would kick off of my foot and go flying ahead of me leaving me to chase it down in an uneven Frankenstein Gait. I considered my self-fortunate when the clog didn’t inadvertently whack someone or something while it flew forward. When I got home each day flinging them off my feet became the norm.

My clogs stayed with me for years, I wore them riding horses and walking to the lake. I wore them to visit my Grandparents country club in Milwaukee and to church with my disapproving Moose Lake Grandmother. Wherever I was I would flex toes on the inner wooden sole clinging to my precious shoes slipping them on and off when I was restless. The clogs were a constant source of joy.

The Demise of the Clog

The era of the clog came to an abrupt end on a crisp autumn day in the suburb of Edina. We had come to visit and stay with our friends the Halverson’s, my brother and I played with Seth, J.D. and the cute friend Jeremy in the basement domain of these boys. We watched Cable TV and played Dungeons and Dragons in a basement that smelled of Pizza, smelly socks, and a combination of musty shag carpet and boy sweat. I had removed my clogs before I descended into the basement to exist in the realm of preteen pre-men. It was 1980

My heals had grown to the edge of the clogs they sat at the top of the steps waiting patiently for the return of my foot. To go hit the road together again. But it was not to be. Upon my assent from the land of boys I came to discover one of the Clogs had gone missing I was distressed and blamed the boys. Surely someone was messing with me. I looked everywhere only to find to my great horror beneath the kitchen table Chinook the blue-eyed Malamute husky looked up at me innocently, licking and chewing what was now a small flap of leather with a buckle attached to a clump of foot stained wood. I wailed and mourned for my shoe as the boys laughed themselves silly.

Barb offered to replace my clogs when she found out what had happened but it was the eighties now and clogs had made their way back into the archives of fashion.
