Defence Science and Technology Laboratory Collaborates with Google Cloud to Boost AI Adoption in UK Defence Sector

In a significant move to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK defence sector, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and Google Cloud have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) today. The announcement was made by Paul Lincoln, the 2nd Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Defence (MOD), during the AI Summit held as part of London's Tech week. This collaboration between Dstl, a leading defence research and development organization, and Google Cloud, a prominent player in cloud computing and AI technologies, aims to focus on five key areas. Firstly, it will accelerate the adoption of technology by enabling Dstl to leverage Google Cloud's AI technologies, processes, and expertise. By gaining insights into how Google Cloud delivers AI solutions to its end-users, Dstl aims to enhance its own capabilities. The agreement also seeks to broaden the supply chain by facilitating access and engagement between Dstl and the Google Cloud Marketplace, as well as Google Cloud's wider partner ecosystem. This step aims to foster collaboration and support the growth of the defence sector through innovative solutions. In line with their commitment to creating an 'AI ready' organization, Dstl will receive support for training and upskilling from Google, benefiting from tailored learning and development opportunities specifically designed for the defence domain. This will help Dstl to keep pace with the evolving landscape of AI technologies. Another crucial aspect of the collaboration is cross-sector technology transfer. Dstl will have the opportunity to explore Google Cloud's technologies in civilian applications and other industries to identify potential applications that can address UK defence challenges effectively. By leveraging Google Cloud's expertise developed for other purposes, Dstl aims to enhance its ability to tackle complex defence issues. The collaboration also encompasses the exchange of working methodologies and approaches to create a world-class AI research environment. Dstl will gain insights into tools, infrastructure, technology watch, horizon scanning, and talent attraction and retention strategies employed by Google Cloud. These practices will help Dstl establish an environment conducive to cutting-edge AI research and development.
