“Why do you always do two sets of notes? I know I need to borrow them sometimes, but I mean…” Miguel watches as Demetri slips one of two identical equation-laden papers into his binder.

“I’ll show you.”

Outside the classroom, Demetri slides the spare notes into a familiar locker. Miguel frowns.

“I thought you two weren’t friends anymore.”

Demetri sighs. “I don’t want him to fail his chemistry finals. He’s too busy committing misdemeanors and breaking arms to pay attention in class.”

“But why help?”

“Because eventually he’ll see sense, amigo. I only hope it’s in time for college applications.”
