But lack of system reliability can frustrate providers, as can a lack of interoperability between specific EHRs and other available systems (Jawhari et al. 2016) Transitioning to new EHRs and other healthcare technology can also prove to be frustrating if a system proves to be inadequate for the organization’s needs and grows obsolete. The massive buy-in needed to implement a system in the first place is why it is essential to carefully screen the system beforehand, to ensure it has appropriate vendor support and the ability to be easily upgraded. According to Schaeffer (2013), all too often physicians and must abandon old EHR systems because they are “too complex to use or too complex to support,” and choose new ones (par. 7). Unfortunately, when the previous experience with an older system is a sour one, people are less apt to embrace a new one, even if it lacks the older system’s inferior features. Finally, “All software has the potential to have issues, but having unresponsive or cumbersome support becomes a problem” and “many practices are finding that their system is inflexible and does not adequately support the functionality or workflow requirements of their particular specialty” because of inappropriate choices of specific systems (Schaeffer, 2013, par.7). All training for a new system is expensive, but transitional costs plus the costs of implementation for a new system further compound the problem.
