The prototype of the KF-21 Boramae fighter (which means hawk in Korean) was shown live to the public for the first time at the Sacheon Air Show 2022 that began on Thursday.
The air show was held to date at Sacheon air base, South Gyeongsang province, Korea, Yonhap news agency said.

The KF-21 generation 4.5 fighter, developed by Korea Aerspace Industries (KAI) with Indonesian partners, is designed to have capabilities above the F-16 and below the F-35.

KAI made six prototypes of the KF-21, of which two are tandem versions. It is one of the most important national projects to replace the current fighters of the Air Force of the Republic of Korea and introduce the next generation of fighters that can satisfy the future concept of operation of the force battlefield.

The KF-21 is equipped with an AESA (active electronic scanning matrix) radar and can carry advanced air-to-air missiles, such as the MBDA Meteor, Raytheon AIM-120 AMRAAM, Diehl IRIS-T and Raytheon AIM-9X Sidewinder.

KAI plans to start mass production of KF-21 in 2026.

Indonesia promised to finance 20% of the total development cost, or US$ 1.55 billion, in exchange for 50 planes that will be manufactured there for the Indonesian Air Force, in addition to technology transfers.
