Fax from Sarajevo: A Story of Survival is a nonfiction graphic novel by veteran American comic book artist Joe Kubert, published in 1996 by Dark Horse Comics.

The book originated as a series of faxes from European comics agent Ervin Rustemagić during the Serbian siege of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Rustemagić and his family, whose home and possessions in the suburb of Dobrinja were destroyed, spent one-and-a-half years trapped in Sarajevo, communicating with the outside world via fax when they could.

Friend and client Kubert, the highly regarded artist of DC Comics' Sgt. Rock, Hawkman, and many other titles, was one recipient. Collaborating long-distance, they collected Rustemagić's account of life during wartime, with Kubert turning the raw faxes into a somber comics tale that won both of the comics industry's two major accolades, the Eisner Award and the Harvey Award.

Treći nastavak.

Povratak u rodni kraj nakon studija u inostranstvu donosio je samo novu etiketu na vaše ime. Sad sam, pored umisljenog papka i neiživljenog umjetnika bio i dijaspora. Mada, ni sam ne znam zašto se ne bih svrstao u tu kategoriju. Proveo sam u Danskoj pet godina studirajuci i ostao tu, nakon što mi je ponuđen posao. Obezbjedio sebi stan, naknadu vizu, moram tu zasluge ipak ostaviti Mensuru. On mi je kroz ove godine bio jak oslonac kako mi je otac bio kilometrima daleko. A eto, nije me ni znao kako treba. On zaslužuje da ga se zove čovjekom, dobrim i nesebičnim.

Odakle ja sad iz Danske da dođem u Sarajevo? Studije završio, lijepo živim, oženio se, dakako, nisam. Navratio sam ovdje, gdje nema pedalja zemlje da me na nju ne podsjeti, da prisustvujem rođakovoj svadbi, a griješiti se ne mogu, poželio sam se i mamine hrane i očevih riječi. Telefoni i laptopi mu glas izoblice i čuti ga uživo bio je podstrek i osvježenje koje mi je trebalo.

U tih pet dana koliko sam bio, obišao sam više rodbine nego za 20 godina koliko sam živio ovdje. Idi kod ovog, idi kod onog, nemoj da se ko naljuti boga ti, nama na dušu ide. Došlo mi je bilo da kažem nek ide, dosta mi je ljudi koji te vole i kojima si drag samo kada od tebe imaju kakve koristi. A takva je, na našu žalost, bila većina. Kako sam još koji put prohodao Vilsom vraćale su se uspomene, jedna pogotovo. Nedavno se i ona priključila mojim košmarima, a ja je, kako sam se više navikao, raširenih ruku, takoreći, primio.

Sjećam se, kosa joj je bila pokupljena u neki niski rep, padala preko teksasne jakne, otkopcane naravno. Na leđima je imala svoj crni ruksak, nosila par svojih najudobnijih pantalona i Nike patike, na dan kada mi je saopstila da više ne želi nastavljati našu vezu. Opet su mi vjetrovi bili neprijatelji i igrajući joj se s pramenovima tamne kose, cinili su me ljubomornim. Nisam joj rekao ništa do da se čuva, da ne voli jako i da zna kome se uvijek može vratiti i ko je nikada neće prestati voljeti. I nisam, još je moja duša kraj nje, kao kakav anđeo čuvar. Riječi o Danskoj nisam progovorio i možda je bolje što nisam, ko zna kako bi se ona onda osjećala. Ovako je bilo lakše, nije morala da zna da mi je bila jedini prioritet. Ona i njena sreća. Neke ljude voliš, a neki vole tebe. Rijetko kad ista osoba čini oboje.

I na toj svadbi, opet da ne griješim dušu, i rođak i njegova sada već žena, bili su prelijepi, eto kao dva najljepša cvijeta u proljeće, a ja sam na njihovom mjestu zamišljao nas. Tebe u dugoj bijeloj haljini, kose pognute da ti ne smeta i jednog zlatnog lancica koji bi ti doticao ključnu kost.

Sanjao sam tu noć možda i nešto lijepo, prvi put u ovoliko godina. Sanjao sam da si me se sjetila, da sam ti umom prošao, makar i samo kad prolaznik, putnik kom treba odmor.

I vratio sam se u Dansku, uhodao u svakodnevnu rutinu, a sliku tebe u bijelom dok sam živ zaboraviti neću. Ja te u njoj zamišljam, a pred njim ćeš takva da stojiš. Kakva sreća mila, pusta k'o i srce napuklo, ali neka. Živjeti se mora. Ovako ili onako.

Cara Mimmy, sto cercando di concentrarmi sui compiti, ma proprio non ci riesco. In città sta succedendo qualcosa. Dalle colline si sentono degli spari, e da Dobrinja* stanno uscendo colonne di gente. Stanno cercando di fermare qualcosa, ma neanche loro sanno cosa. C'è solo la sensazione che stia per succedere qualcosa, qualcosa di molto brutto. Alla TV si vede la gente radunata davanti al Parlamento della Bosnia-Erzegovina. La radio continua a trasmettere la stessa canzone: Sarajevo, amore mio. È tutto molto bello, ma continuo ad avere i crampi allo stomaco e non riesco più a concentrarmi. Mimmy, ho paura della GUERRA!!!
