however, for renegade points, you have the option to walk away from the interview, which will - if picked enough whenever you’re interviewed by her - lead you to be able to, and i wish i was kidding about this, knock her out. on tv being broadcast live, although that in itself doesn’t really mean too much in the grand scheme of things.

yes, Al-Jilani has an agenda, and she’s appealing to what’s considered a popularist human opinion - she’s trying to find dirt on the alien races, to prove that the first human spectre (or just the alliance) is nothing more than a front and that humans are being used, but... this is something that can be done in each game you encounter her. if you hit her consistently, she ends up calling you a violent thug in me3... and rightfully so.

sure, shepard has to be violent when he’s working. it’s a sci-fi rpg shooter, i understand that. but there’s so much wrong here that makes me viscerally uncomfortable, and not just as an afab person. shepard’s customisable, so one could make the argument that violence against women when it comes from a woman is lesser in some way - false, by the by - but like. you’re military, and you’re hitting a civilian. hell, the ICRC - International Committee of the Red Cross - states that civilians are protected from attack (by military personnel), losing that protection when they take direct part in hostilities. Attacking a civilian and using excessive force against civilian objects is a fucking war crime. sure, this is a game series set in space, but for the love of christ we have precedents to follow here. why not let shepard attack any and all civilians? no, has to be the pushy female reporter. war crimes can be brought before the International Criminal Court (ICC) and punishable by long-term imprisonment or death, if not dealt with directly via a standard court martial. considering shepard’s status at this point, i can’t imagine anything less than a big show and dance... inter-galactically. put the humans on the big stage and point your fingers at them.

sure, it’s not a huge thing, especially not in a era where video game violence is popularised and glamourised across all sorts of genres, but al-jilani is specifically singled out as a target across the franchise and it’s always laughed off as a joke within the fandom proper. between this and the way the asari are handled, it’s just... tiring, overall, that in this sci-fi setting - and from a company that even back in 2007 was quote-unquote known for at least being a little braver than others and including same-sex relationships where others weren’t - bioware isn’t perfect and hasn’t exactly improved on their formula over the years so in hindsight i can almost say “they were better than than they are now” but the feminine is still treated the same as it is in every other fucking piece of media i’ve ever consumed and not being able to close my eyes against seeing it now is exhausting. it’s a lot of little things all adding up to be a much larger problem - as is the case with most everything.
