Smash hit Bad Jews returns for holiday season
Oliver Booth, Lara Lipschitz, Glen Biderman-Pam and Donna Cormack-Thomson will perform in BAD JEWS.
The Fugard Theatre’s South African production of Joshua Harmon’s West End smash hit, the “blisteringly funny” Bad Jews returns for a limited season. After a sold-out season in Cape Town and Johannesburg, Bad Jews will return from December 13 until December 31.
The play is once more presented by Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre and will be performed in the Fugard Studio Theatre Tuesday to Fridays at 8pm and on Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm.
After the death of their grandfather, Poppy, a family heirloom propels cousins Daphna and Liam into a domestic battle of honour, faith and heritage. The devoutly Jewish Daphna is at odds with her secular cousin Liam, an entitled young man detached from his cultural traditions. Caught in the middle are Jonah, Liam’s younger brother, and Liam’s non-Jewish girlfriend Melody, who just wants everyone to get along. When the group is forced to spend the night in close quarters, hilarity and mayhem ensues.
The production garnered a five-star review from the Jewish Chronicle (UK). “There is something particularly remarkable about the way Harmon explores how post-Holocaust Jewish generations live with the legacy of the Shoah (Holocaust). Remarkable, because whereas most dramatists would address that territory with sombre respect, Harmon does it with irreverent wit.” John Nathan – The Jewish Chronicle (UK), January 2015.
This Fugard Theatre production once again features Lara Lipschitz (Cabaret, Jersey Boys) who returns to the Fugard Theatre in Bad Jews as Daphna, a devout Jew, who is unbending and religiously opinionated. Opposite Lara is Glen Biderman-Pam (Somewhere on the Border, The Epicene Butcher) who will reprise his role of Liam, Daphna’s secular cousin. Oliver Booth (Skews Me, Life with Oli Booth, CHAMP) too will reprise his role of Jonah, Liam’s younger brother. The Fugard Theatre welcomes Donna Cormack-Thomson who will play the role of Melody, Liam’s new non-Jewish girlfriend.
Greg Karvellas (CHAMP, The Frontiersmen, Clybourne Park, The Father) directs with set and costume designs by Saul Radomsky (The Shadow of the Hummingbird, Orpheus in Africa).
