Today those who defend the environment are slaughtered every day. At a time like the one that the planet lives in which the protection of those who defend it is required, the opposite happens. Those who have resisted this destruction by the powerful have not stopped saying NO, they have always done so, although the current administration does not want to have memory.

The murder in the community of Amilcingo, Morelos of Samir Flores, a member of the resistance against the Comprehensive Plan Morelos, its gas pipeline and thermoelectric plants that put the life and territory of Nahua communities in Puebla and Morelos at risk; the massacre of 15 Ikoot indigenous people in San Mateo del Mar, Oaxaca, one of the regions that has opposed the Trans-isthmian Corridor projects; the growing paramilitary violence in Chiapas, with 56 attacks in the municipality of Aldama alone, and the kidnapping in February of members of the National Indigenous Council (CNI) of the municipality of Chenalhó are proof that the war continues.

Now the violence is becoming more and more explicit against the Zapatista communities. The growth of the activity of paramilitary groups such as “Los Chinchulines” or the Regional Organization of Coffee Growers of Ocosingo (ORCAO), as well as the appearance of new groups, is exacerbating tension in the region. The theft and burning of warehouses and houses of the Moisés Ghandi community, of the Autonomous Rebel Zapatista Municipality “Lucio Cabañas”, (in the official municipality of Ocosingo), show the increase in the intensity of the aggressions and provocations against the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. The EZLN has respected the ceasefire for years and has focused on strengthening its autonomous organizational processes with schools, clinics, and justice systems. It is serious that one of the ethical references of resistance and construction of concrete and viable alternatives for the planet continues to be under siege, and it is even more serious that the response of those who seek to “transform Mexico” is complicity or oblivion in the face of these extermination attempts. .

It is extremely worrying that this occurs in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, that there are those who seek to take advantage of the vulnerability in which everyone finds themselves to fuel their ambitions for money and power. It is more worrisome when those who are supposedly in charge of preventing such abuses allow and therefore favor them.

Beyond the erroneous or successful changes of the executive power, which shows this escalation of violence in indigenous areas, and the worsening of paramilitary attacks in the Zapatista territory in Chiapas, is the continuity of the racist, colonial and paternalistic vision of the governments. liberals and conservatives, left and right. Projects such as the Mayan Train show the idea of ​​bringing "development" to indigenous peoples by turning them into cheap labor and contributing only the folkloric image of the Mexican indigenous.

The violence and dispossession of indigenous territories that megaprojects such as the Trans-isthmian Corridor or the Mayan Train imply and require are the ethical breaking point of the current Mexican government, it is where the moral stature that President López Obrador has awarded in front of its predecessors begins to collapse.

Mit einer deutlich gestiegenen Internationalität bei Ausstellern und Besuchern sowie einem nachhaltigen Schub bei der Digitalisierung ist am Freitag die LIGNA zu Ende gegangen. Nach fünf Messetagen ziehen die Veranstalter eine eindrucksvolle Bilanz. Die weltweit wichtigste Messe für Maschinen, Anlagen und Werkzeuge für die Holzbe- und -verarbeitung boomt. \“Die LIGNA 2017 hat einen Meilenstein in der Digitalisierung der Holzwirtschaft gesetzt\“, sagte Dr. Andreas Gruchow, Mitglied des Vorstandes der Deutschen Messe AG, zum Abschluss der Veranstaltung am Freitag in Hannover. \“Industrie-4.0-Konzepte für die Holzwirtschaft waren das beherrschende Thema der diesjährigen LIGNA: Digitalisierung, Vernetzung und Automatisierung standen dabei im Mittelpunkt. Die Aussteller demonstrierten Lösungen in jeder Größenordnung und in allen Facetten, von komplexen vernetzten Anlagen für die Industrie bis hin zu Einstiegssystemen für handwerklich strukturierte Betriebe.\“

Die LIGNA 2017 ist mit einem neuen Flächenkonzept an den Start gegangen, um das Zusammenwachsen von Handwerk und Industrie bei der Anwendung von Technologien zu spiegeln. \“Das Konzept ist voll aufgegangen. Unsere Kunden finden sich bestens zurecht\“, sagte Wolfgang Pöschl, Vorsitzender des VDMA Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen, Frankfurt am Main, und Vorstandsvorsitzender der Michael Weinig AG, Tauberbischofsheim. \“Digitalisierung und vernetzte Fertigung sind neue Erfolgsfaktoren bei unseren Kunden. Insgesamt ist die Nachfrage enorm und sorgt für eine starke Auftragslage. Wir tun alles, um die Lieferzeiten nicht zu lang werden zu lassen.\“

Mit dem neuen Konzept hat die LIGNA der Branche entscheidende Impulse für ein fortlaufendes gesundes Wachstum gegeben. Mehr als 1 500 Aussteller, davon 900 aus dem Ausland, präsentierten seit Montag auf 129 000 Quadratmetern Nettoausstellungsfläche zukunftsweisende Lösungen und Technologien sowie innovative Fertigungsanlagen. Gruchow: \“Die Aussteller haben sich in diesem Jahr mit besonders repräsentativen Ständen und einem teilweise völlig neuen Standbau in Szene gesetzt und der LIGNA ein neues Gesicht gegeben. Das kam gut an. Die LIGNA konnte an Internationalität deutlich zulegen und hat damit ihre Position als weltweite Nummer eins weiter ausgebaut.\“

Zur LIGNA 2017 kamen insgesamt 93 000 Besucher, davon 42 000 internationale Besucher aus mehr als 100 Ländern. Zuwächse gab es aus allen Regionen der Welt, insbesondere aus Asien, Nordamerika und Europa. Gruchow: \“Diese beeindruckenden Zahlen belegen, dass die internationalen Entscheider erkannt haben, dass sie nur auf der LIGNA einen umfassenden Blick auf die Entwicklungen im Bereich der Holzbe- und -verarbeitung erhalten.\“ Neben Deutschland waren die Top-Ten-Besucherländer Frankreich, Österreich, USA, Schweden, Belgien, Spanien, China, Polen, Italien und Russland.

Mehr als 80 Prozent der Besucher bewerteten die neue thematische Aufteilung der LIGNA mit \“gut\“ oder \“sehr gut\“. Auch der neu ausgeflaggte Bereich Oberflächentechnik kam hervorragend an. Jeder dritte Besucher interessierte sich dafür.

Stimmen der Aussteller

Pekka Paasivaara, Vorsitzender des Vorstandes der HOMAG Group AG, Schopfloch: \“Es war eine hervorragende LIGNA für uns. Der HOMAG Stand war sehr gut besucht. Die 100 Meter lange Losgröße-1-Anlage, unser Innovations-Center und ganz besonders tapio – die neue digitale Plattform für die Holzbearbeitung – haben die Besucher begeistert. Vor allem unser Handwerksbereich war sehr stark frequentiert. Die Internationalität ist gestiegen und die LIGNA hat sich wieder als die Weltleitmesse präsentiert.\“

Jürgen Philipps, Sprecher der Geschäftsführung, Siempelkamp Maschinen und Anlagenbau GmbH in Krefeld: \“Für uns ist die LIGNA die Neuheitenmesse – wir haben Innovationen auf dieser Messe in die Realität umgesetzt und leben den Service für unsere Kunden. Für uns war die LIGNA 2017 ein voller Erfolg.\“

Luigi De Vito, Division Director Machinery der SCM GROUP SPA, Rimini, Italien: \“Wir sind überwältigt von der Internationalität dieser LIGNA. Wir haben Kunden aus 60 Ländern an unserem Stand gehabt. Für SCM haben sich damit deutliche Chancen in neuen sowie auch konsolidierten Märkten ergeben.\“

Marcel Pfost, Leiter Trainings & Fairs der Festool GmbH aus Wendlingen: \“Das neue Konzept der LIGNA hat hervorragend funktioniert, denn die Mischung aus Groß- und Kleinmaschinen hat dazu geführt, dass wir neue Besuchergruppen auf unserem Stand begrüßen durften. Für Festool hat das Zusammenspiel aus Freigelände und Messestand hervorragend geklappt, denn wir konnten so auch die Zielgruppe der Zimmerer und Schreiner perfekt erreichen. Besonders an den ersten beiden Messetagen war ein reges Interesse seitens der internationalen Messebesucher an unseren Produkten zu verzeichnen.\“

Klaus Longmuss, Geschäftsführer der Wood-Mizer Sägewerke Vertriebs GmbH aus Schletau: \“Noch nie hatten wir so viele ausländische Besucher auf dem Stand. Das Konzept, unsere großen Sägewerke im Freigelände dem internationalen Publikum zu zeigen, ist voll aufgegangen.\“

Die Marktführer nutzten die Weltleitmesse, um neue Softwarekonzepte einzuführen, die übergreifend alle Komponenten einer Anlage integrieren. Im Sog des Megathemas Industrie 4.0 erwies sich die Visualisierung von Prozess- und Arbeitsschritten als viel beachteter Trend. Von der Service-App für das Maschinenmonitoring über den digitalen Sägewegweiser mit Piktogrammsteuerung bis hin zum Schaufelkamerasystem für Radlader stellte die Holzwirtschaft ihre Innovationsstärke unter Beweis. Mit Cloud basierten digitalen Zwillingen von Maschinen und Werkzeugen wurden effiziente Verfahren für eine schnellere Inbetriebnahme sowie die Lebenszyklus-Dokumentation vorgestellt.

Eine deutlich gesteigerte Produktionseffizienz bei minimalen Anforderungen an die Bedienung war ein weiteres Kennzeichen der vielen Neuheiten auf der LIGNA. Erstmals wurde beispielsweise die Komplettbearbeitung eines Möbels mit \“drei Klicks\“ präsentiert. Im Bereich der Maschinenkomponenten und Automatisierung sind Roboter stark auf dem Vormarsch.

Im Pavillon an Halle 11 fanden gemeinsam mit der Sprint-Akademie aus Köln erstmalig die LIGNA-Trainings für Tischler, Schreiner, Zimmerer und mobile Monteure statt. Festool, Jowat, Mafell sowie Dr. Koch vom Thünen-Institut engagierten sich dort als Trainingspartner mit einem anwendungsbezogenen Programm. In neun Schulungen von jeweils eineinhalb bis zwei Stunden vermittelten die Referenten Wissen zu technikorientierten, handwerksbezogenen Themen. Beispielsweise erläuterten sie die Unterscheidungsmerkmale neuer Handelshölzer oder veranschaulichten die Funktionsweise von modernen Klebstoffen. Unter Anleitung der Anwendungstechniken konnten interessierte Teilnehmer die handgeführten Maschinen zur Holzbearbeitung direkt vor Ort intensiv erproben. Sie profitierten von wertvollen Tipps und sprachen von einem echten Gewinn für die LIGNA.

Ein weiteres Angebot der LIGNA waren die Kurzvorträge zum Thema Processing of Plastics and Composites in der Robotation Academy. Hier tauschten sich Experten zu den aktuellen Themen und Trends aus. Zahlreiche Aussteller zeigten darüber hinaus auf ihren Ständen, dass Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen nicht nur den Werkstoff Holz bearbeiten können, sondern auch für die Bearbeitung von Kunststoffen, plattenförmigen Verbundmaterialien und Composites, Dämm- und Baustoffen eingesetzt werden. Diese Anwendungen sind vor allem für den Caravan- und Bootsbau, den Innenausbau von Fahrzeugen, Schiffen und Flugzeugen, aber auch für die Konfektionierung von Kunststoffen interessant.

Das neue Konzept der LIGNA ist auch bei den Besuchern der Primärindustrie mit den vier Themenbereichen Forsttechnik, Sägewerksindustrie, Holzwerkstoffherstellung und Energie aus Holz auf breite Zustimmung gestoßen. Dort ging es um die Bereitstellung des Rohstoffs für die stoffliche und energetische Nutzung von Holz, von der Planung über den Einschlag bis zur Bringung. Der aktuelle Stand der Technik für den forstlichen Einsatz unbemannter, ferngesteuerter Fluggeräte (UAV = Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) war hier ein Besuchermagnet ebenso wie aktuelle Verfahren der Waldvermessung.

Unter dem Hermesturm wurde erstmals ein Vorführgelände eingerichtet, das in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kuratorium für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik e. V. (KWF) auf einem etwa 1 500 Quadratmeter großen Parcours täglich mehrere moderierte Technikpräsentationen zeigte. Von der Wertholzastung, der Entnahme stehenden Holzes mittels Harvester, über den Transport aus dem Bestand per Forwarder und Rückewagen an die Waldstraße bis hin zum Transport ins Werk, war hier alles zu sehen.

Auf großes Interesse stieß vor allem beim internationalen Publikum der Primärindustrie der 2. Wood Industry Summit. 15 Delegationen aus 13 Ländern (zum Beispiel aus Kanada, Kolumbien, Chile, Bulgarien oder Rumänien) haben diese Gelegenheit für den fachlichen Austausch genutzt. Unter dem Motto \“Access to Resources and Technology\“ wurden die aktuellen Entwicklungen bei den Themen \“Forst- und Holzwirtschaft 4.0\“, \“Erschließung der Wälder\“, \“Waldbrandbekämpfung\“ und \“Flottenmanagement\“ intensiv diskutiert.

Die nächste LIGNA findet vom 27. bis 31. Mai 2019 statt.

It’s that time again, time for a look at some of the good people who are out there doing good things for our world.  I think you will enjoy today’s selections … and here … you’re going to need these

Trenton Lewis is only 21-years-old, but this young man has one of the strongest work ethics I have ever seen.  Trenton is the father of an adorable 14-month-old daughter, Karmen, who serves as a powerful motivator.

“My pride is strong. Whatever she needs, I’m the person who is supposed to provide it for her.”

Seven months ago, Trenton was offered a job at the local UPS center, 11 miles from his home.  Only one small problem … Trenton did not own a car, nor have access to one.  But do you think that stopped this young man?  Nope … he took that job, and has never missed a shift nor been late a single time for his 4:00 a.m. shift.  How?  He leaves at midnight to walk the 11 miles, that’s how!  For seven months, braving rain, wind and traffic, he has walked to work and never said a word to anyone, never once complained.

In my book, Trenton himself is a ‘good people’, but there’s more!  One of his co-workers, Patricia “Mama Pat” Bryant, found out that Trenton was walking to work every day.  She and her husband have both worked at the UPS center for nearly 40 years, and they are good people.

“For a young person to decide in their mind ‘if I don’t have a ride, if I can’t get a ride then I’ll walk.’ If a guy can do that, we can pitch in to help.”

The Bryants quietly spread the word, and every single employee they asked chipped in until soon they had collected enough money, $2,000, to buy Trenton a car!  Not a new car, mind you, but a 2006 Saturn Ion in good condition that will get him to work and back home to his baby girl. Kenneth Bryant said when he told the car’s seller what he was doing, he even dropped the price of the car.

They surprised Trenton a few days ago when they asked him to come to a union meeting out in the parking lot, and then after a few brief words by Bryant, they handed the keys to Trenton … his first car!  Trenton, needless to say, was overwhelmed and profoundly grateful!

“I wanted to be with my daughter, to be able to support her. I wanted to be a father. I’m never going to forget this ever.”

A whole lot of good people came together to help another good person … how much better can it get?

John Lee Cronin has Down’s Syndrome.  John Lee Cronin loves socks. John Lee Cronin is 21 years old and owns his own business … selling socks!

When John graduated from high school, he had already decided he wanted to start a business with his dad, and he loved socks, so what better venture than selling socks?  Not just socks, mind you … not plain ol’ white crew socks or black dress socks, but fun socks, funky socks!  In December 2016, John and his dad, launched an on line store named John’s Crazy Socks.

Now, typically on Wednesday’s ‘good people’ post, I shine a light on people who are feeding the homeless, helping people rebuild after a disaster, adopting or helping children survive and thrive, and it is true that John is doing none of these things.  But I happen to think that he still earned a spot in this post, for what he is doing is motivating and inspiring.  He is showing other disabled people that they can do anything they set their minds to.  And he is, I think, an inspiration to the rest of us as well, for I found myself in awe of this young man’s stamina and determination.

In under two years, John’s Crazy Socks has topped $2 million in sales revenue.  It’s easy to see why … they have some awesome socks.  My girls love funky and fuzzy socks, and I know where I will be shopping come birthday and holiday season!

Larry “Smiley” Kleiman served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a younger man. Today he spends his time doing all manners of good things, from being a volunteer firefighter and EMT, to helping out at the local K-9 unit.  Larry Kleiman is one of the good people in this story, but there is also another.  You see, Larry, nicknamed ‘Smiley’, hasn’t smiled in years, for he has no teeth.  A calcium deficiency that started while he was in Vietnam cost him his teeth over the course of the years.  Recently, though, Larry decided to go to Dr. Michael Tischler, founder of Teeth Tomorrow, for a consultation, just to see if perhaps he could get his smile back, but he left discouraged.

“I wasn’t really going to do it because it was a lot of money and on a fixed income, a retirement, there was no way feasible of me doing it.”

But he was surprised a few days later when he received a call from Dr. Tischler asking him to come back in to the office.  Dr. Tischler had been so moved by Larry’s story and what he had given – was still giving – to the world, that he decided to give Larry a full set of dental implants, valued at $60,000, for free!

“He smiled, he had no teeth. His name was Smiley, he was a fireman. He worked with dogs in Vietnam. And everything about him was just the kind of person that you want to help. They’re giving up their lives for our freedom. And to have a gentleman like this that had two tours in Vietnam, which was a horrible war… We felt good helping him.”

And there, folks, is the second ‘good person’ in this piece.  Larry has his new implants and is smiling once again, and Dr. Tischler is, in my book, a hero.

And that is a wrap for this week’s Good People Doing Good Things!  Isn’t it wonderful to realize that these people are only a small sampling of all the good people out there … people going quietly about the business of trying to help each other in whatever way they can, whether it be financial,  practical, or just giving a bit of time to someone who is lonely.  I am inspired and motivated to find a way to do something for somebody this week … how about you?
