Body Modification on Visual Social Media

Just as every workplace has significant and distinct aesthetic templates, sometimes more specific and professional than others, social media is also said to have such popular aesthetic templates. Ever since the introduction of the concept ‘microcelebrity’ on social media, those aesthetic templates have been looking absolutely recognizable so far. Microcelebrity is defined as a new form of identity that is linked almost exclusively to online spaces (Senft, 2012). These ‘celebrities’ rely heavily on their visibility on social media to build a specific brand of products or even themselves, thus adhering to using aesthetic templates to highlight one or both of them. In social media posts by several well-known microcelebrities, such as Kylie Jenner, or Kim Kardashian, it is not hard to point out certain poses, movements that emphasize the curves and body parts of them, which not only normalize pornification but also promote unhealthy body images. Not just one or two, but many influencers and so-called microcelebrities are openly sharing images of themselves photoshopped and posed in a way that makes them look more ‘slim’, ‘tall’, have brighter skin, etc. Many women look up to this type of body image wanting to have similar body types, or body parts, such as lashes, brows, lips, cheekbones. Therefore, image or video-based social media platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok are the destinations for many young women to find ‘inspiring’ images for body modification, without consulting a real doctor or even considering if that body is achievable in real life. Evidence suggests that before their consultation, more plastic surgery patients are looking for health-related information online and on social media. A lot of teenage girls and young female adults are said to have body dysmorphic disorder by constantly comparing themselves to aspiring body image (and actually fake) on the internet, as well as lots of them might even be underrepresented in commercials and branding that it’s hurtful and create hatred towards themselves.

Celebrities already have a job, being famous. However, as their fame and reputation continues to grow, the more they have to upkeep themselves. For example, Kim Kardashian. She is notoriously well-known for loving herself, taking selfies, glorifying her booty and body in general, and starting fashion trends. It is reported by Forbes that Kim Kardashian’s net worth is 51 million dollars. However, she still promotes offers discount codes (for her benefit as well) for brands like Atkins and Lumee. Atkins is a nutritional approach to dieting and Lumee is a phone case that lights up to help take better selfies. Kim Kardashian has mentioned the Atkins diet in interviews and constantly has the $60 Lumee case on her phone in her TV show, not including postings on social media. Duffy explains aspirational labor, “the activities these young women engage in can be conceptualized as aspirational labour, which I define as a forward-looking, carefully orchestrated, and entrepreneurial form of creative cultural production. Like individuals performing social roles through aspirational consumption—for instance, purchasing luxury products to present oneself as a member of an elite status.”

Kim Kardashian and her family are also known for living very luxurious lifestyles and are the least bit humble about it. They have created a reputation for themselves that millennials strive to be like them. Millennials want to travel on private jets, have a closet of designer bags, and drive a luxury car, but don’t take the time to actually work for it. The DWYL (Do What You Love) concept by Miya Tokumitsu ties really well into how the Kardashians set unrealistic goals for their audience. “Do what you love” disguises the fact that being able to choose a career primarily for personal reward is a privilege, a sign of socioeconomic class, according to Tokumitsu. Active social media users and followers of the Kardashian clan fail to understand that it’s taken decades for the family to build their fortune and reputation, but nobody ever talks about that. Nobody talks about how Kim Kardashian used to clean out closets or work in retail before becoming a reality TV star. NOW, she is doing what she loves. NOW, she is living the luxury life. The millennial generation fails to grasp the concept of time and hard work. Working the shitty jobs, long hours, and wearing the awkward uniforms from big corporate companies. 

Our society has unrealistic expectations due to huge influencers like Kim Kardashian and her sisters, because of how they promote themselves on social media. They do no show the blood, sweat, and tears that it took to get to where they are. We are left to believe that due to a sex tape, some plastic surgery, and a good selfie is all it takes to become famous and make easy money. There are many people in the world who will spend thousands on a designer product to make it look like he or she is wealthy, but really still sleep on an air mattress and work the night shift at some night club. All in hopes that they will have more respect and that having nice things validate their worth. 

Whether the Atkins diet has actually worked for Kim, I don’t personally believe it. I am guilty of purchasing the Lumee case that she promotes, and I can vouch that it does actually make your selfies look like professional photos. However, the rise of wanting instant gratification, wealth, and improvement is something our society is currently struggling with. We are heavily influenced by celebrities who seem to have it all by doing so little. Hence, why everyone wants to be a makeup artist or fitness guru. It doesn’t take a decade to get famous that way.
