“Hey, it’s what we do.” Everest turned xyr gaze to the water as xe sighed “Gotta say though, I never expected to end up as a vigilante; especially on another planet.”

“What can I say, life comes at ya in unexpected ways.” Throttle shrugged. 

“That’s certainly one way to put it. One minute I’m on Caynaris, living a normal life, then the next thing I know I’m a galaxy away.” 

“Guess a change like that takes some getting used to.”  

“Yeah.” Xe looked up to the sky. “Do… Do you ever miss Mars?”

Throttle’s tone turned solemn. “Of course I do. Everything I knew was there. Fought a war to defend it.” He tipped his head back, admiring the orangey sky. “But, I’ve found a lot of things to love on Earth. Found Chicago, Charley, people who accept us. And I found you.” He turned to xem. 

Everest blushed. “When you put it like that, guess you’ve got a point.” 

“Even the small things; like this lake for example. We don’t have large bodies of water on Mars, any water that’s not in the ice caps runs in underground veins. To the people of Earth, it's just a lake like any other, but it's kind of a wonder to me.” 

Throttle then stood, starting to walk towards the lake. Everest rose quickly to follow him. 

“I’m no brainiac, but I’ve learned to appreciate what makes ya happy, no matter your situation. Obviously it won’t solve all your problems, but they add up in the end.” 

“I think that’s a very noble mindset to have.” Everest said. “You can’t control everything in your life, but you can choose to focus on what you love.”

Now standing at the edge of the lake, the two found themselves contemplating as they stared across the water. 

“Though, if I’m honest, I’m most grateful that I met you.”

“That’s right. We both ended up on earth from less than favorable circumstances, but we made the best of it. You never let anything stop you, Ev. You’re one of the fiercest fighters I’ve ever seen, and can always find your way out of a tough spot. Even outside of battle, you don’t take shit and know what you want. You protect those you care about, and create a sense of stability. You’re just incredible overall, and I wouldn’t change a thing about you.”

In a rare moment, Everest smiled sheepishly at his words. “Thank you, I’m flattered you think so highly of me.” 

“‘Course. I would go on, but I do have a point to this.”

He drew a small box from his pocket, and upon opening it, revealed a silver earring. 

“Will you marry me?”

Everest stood in shock, mouth agape. Then, a smile spread across xyr face, tears welling as xe laughed. 

“Yes.” 

Throttle’s face lit up as he stood, wrapping his arms around xem and kissing xem deeply.

“You have no idea how happy I am to hear that.”

“That makes two of us.” Xe giggled. 

Throttle took the earring from the box. “On Mars, it's a tradition to propose with a silver earring. Figured I’d implement a part of my own culture, heh.”

Everest studied the earring, admiring it. “It’s beautiful, I love it.”

With a nod, Throttle gently clasped the earring onto xyr ear. After making sure it was secure, he stared in awe as it glinted in the sunlight.  

“It looks perfect on you.” 

Everest grinned widely as xe looked up at him. “I love you, Theno.” 

“Love you too, Everest.”

The two kissed once again, fully engulfed in their happiness and the presence of each other. They remained in the embrace for what seemed like hours, time slowing as they basked in the moment. While neither wanted it to end, they both were excited to see what their future would hold,

Weekend in Orange County, CA

After living in Orange County for several years, I know firsthand that there are endless ways to spend your time. Below, you will find a weekend itinerary I put together to give you the experience of truly living like one of the locals. Especially now during the coronavirus pandemic, I know how important it is to remain safe. That is why all the places I’ve suggested offer outside eating and dining and involve several outdoor activities, all of which follow the CDC guidelines. A weekend guide to enjoying OC

Friday - Laguna Beach, CA

First, head down the scenic Pacific Coast Highway to beautiful Laguna Beach. I would suggest checking out the hiking trails at Top of the World, but make sure you have a water bottle and comfortable shoes. If you’re not much into hiking, you can keep driving along the 133 and find your way to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, where you'll be able to see and learn about some recovering seals. While both attractions are free, the Pacific Marine Mammal Center is ran by volunteers and donations are greatly appreciated.

Afterwards, you can enjoy a beautiful view and dinner at the Crystal Cove "Beachcomber" restaurant at sunset. While this experience may be a little pricey, the panoramic views of Laguna at sunset will be worth it.

If you're driving in from out of town, I'd suggest finding an Airbnb or hotel somewhere in the Anaheim or City of Orange area. With many options for every budget, you'll be right in the center of O.C., having an easy drive to any and all of your destinations.

Saturday - Huntington Beach, CA

For Saturday morning's breakfast or brunch, I'd recommend Mama’s on 39 in Huntington Beach. Mama's is laid back and delicious, what a great way to start your Saturday in OC. Their newspaper menus and homestyle cooking give it such a chill vibe. I'm not going to tell you how to live your life, but ordering one of their “Thrifty” brand ice cream milk shakes is an absolute must!

An entertaining way to enjoy your day in Huntington Beach is a nice bike ride. Right up the street from Mama's on 39 is EV Rideables, a bike shop that offers rentals by the hour and by the day. They have many bike rental options to choose from depending on your comfort level. Their offers range from the classic, one gear beach cruiser, an electric pedal bike, all the way to a super sweet, electric tricycle. No matter which you decide on, you'll be getting around in style and sight-seeing like one of the locals.

During (or after) your bike ride, what could be more "so-cal" than enjoying Huntington State Beach and pier for the afternoon? Swim in the ocean, or watch the surfers as you take in the sun and ocean breeze. Make sure to stop at Northside Market down the street on your way in. There you can buy firewood and supplies to make s'mores once the sun sets. Make sure you're early getting to the bon fires, as many others enjoy the night-time memories made at Huntington Beach.

Since Huntington Beach is not one of the California beaches where you're legally allowed to consume alcohol, you'll have to cross the street to one of the many bars when you're looking for a night-cap. If you’re over 21 and your throat is feeling dry, stop into Treehouse at Tanner’s and enjoy the night-time ambiance with an intimate patio, filled with string lights and fire pits to keep you warm.

Sunday - Santa Ana / Orange, CA

For your last breakfast for the weekend in O.C., I'd suggest checking out Santa Ana’s Black Market Bakery where you can enjoy their fresh brewed coffees and espressos along with an in-house and made from scratch pastry or breakfast “Eggywiches” – the Farmhouse is my go-to!

Then, make your way over to Irvine Regional Park (which is actually in the city of Orange). There, you can drive around the scenic, paved roads and check out the Irvine Park Railroad. You can choose from horseback riding, paddleboat rentals, train rides, or go to the Orange County Zoo. If you’re looking for a more relaxing wrap up to the weekend, you can find your way to the snack bar and concessions they have there. You can then head over to a picnic table to play some cards or a game of dominos. With the miles of walking and hiking trails, you can exercise a bit to ease the guilt of all the indulging you’ve enjoyed this weekend. 1 of 900: An Original Triumph TT Special – $10,000 to $12,000 USD (Estimated)

In the 1960s both Steve McQueen and Evel Knievel owned Triumph TT Specials, McQueen often raced his Triumphs with notable success, and Knievel used his in the life and death world of stunt jumping.

The most famous Triumph TT Special was undoubtably the example used by Evel Knievel for the Caesar’s Palace fountain jump on New Year’s Eve 1967. It didn’t go well. But it did forever stamp the TT Special into the minds of all who watched.

Despite the British badge on the fuel tank, the TT Special was a sub-model invented by the Americans, specifically the team at Johnson Motors on the West Coast.

TT Steeplechase and the Triumph TT Special

TT steeplechase racing has its roots in flat track racing, but instead of racing in an oval the course includes both right and left hand turns, with at least one jump. The bikes used in modern TT steeplechase are typically similar to flat track motorcycles however they have a front brake fitted.

Back in the ’60s TT steeplechase motorcycles had more in common with desert sleds, the key difference being the exhaust pipes slung under the engine rather than up high along the side. Steeplechase tracks didn’t need the ground clearance that off road motorcycles need, save for the jump of course, but even this wasn’t enough to bring the pipes into contact with the dirt.

The AMA Class C racing rules governing flat track racing limited overhead valve engines to 500cc whilst allowing side valves engines of up to 750cc. This was done to directly block British bikes and favour the somewhat simpler side valve V-twins used in the racing Harley-Davidsons of the era.

TT steeplechase had no such limitation, neither did most forms of desert racing, and this is where the British parallel twins dominated – particularly those built by Triumph.

In the 1960s Triumph had two major importers in the USA, Johnson Motors on the West Coast and Triumph Corporation on the East Coast. These importers had a far better idea of what the local American audience wanted than the suits in a boardroom in England.

When Bill Johnson of Johnson Motors put together a list of special modifications they felt would make the Bonneville unbeatable in TT competition the suits in England listened.

Triumph TT Special Engine and Specifications

Each Triumph TT Special was built on the same production line as the regular Bonneville, however they were fitted with 12:1 ratio high-compression pistons, a pair of open underslung pipes, larger twin 1-3/16″ carburetors, a performance cam with higher lift and duration, a higher-output ignition system, and lower gearing for better acceleration.

In order to lower weight the headlight/taillight was deleted, the speedometer was deleted, aluminum fenders replaced the original steel fenders, and the fork lock was removed. All in all this saved approximately 30 lbs over the standard Bonneville. These modifications meant the bikes weren’t road legal of course, but they were never intended to be boulevard cruisers.

It was powered by an uprated version of the same 649cc OHV parallel twin cylinder engine producing 54 bhp, mostly thanks to the largely carburettors, more aggressive cam profile, and open exhausts.

The TT Special had the same front and rear drum brakes as the stock Bonneville as well as the stock suspension, fuel tank, and seat. A set of wide handlebars were fitted, made all the more prominent by the deleted headlight, mirrors, and the sole gauge.

High octane fuel (by the standards of the time) had to be used due to the aforementioned 12:1 compression ratio, and acceleration off the line, even on dirt, was described as loud, fast, and brutal.

This series of modifications gave the TT Special a different and far more aggressive engine note than the stock Bonneville largely due to the new cam and open pipes

The Triumph TT Special was first released in 1964 and was only available from Johnston Motors, it began winning as soon as its wheels touched the dirt, and in 1965 the TT Special won more events in its class than all other makes combined.

The model would be discontinued in 1967 with approximately 900 made, many haven’t survived to the modern day due to their tough lives on the steeplechase courses of the 1960s, so examples that have survived are highly sought after by collectors.

The 1967 TT Special you see here is from the final year of production, importantly it has a matching numbers engine and frame, and is presented in excellent original condition throughout.
