Al contrario, non si sa quasi niente del fondatore di Shein, il miliardario cinese Yangtian Xu, che è una figura estremamente schiva e tutto sommato misteriosa perfino per gli addetti ai lavori. È conosciuto perlopiù con il suo nome inglese, Chris Xu, anche se sembra che da qualche tempo si faccia chiamare Sky Xu. Non fa mai dichiarazioni che vadano oltre alcune frasi nei comunicati stampa dell’azienda, e nonostante Xu sia tra gli uomini più ricchi della Cina è molto meno conosciuto di personaggi come il fondatore di Alibaba Jack Ma o Pony Ma dell’azienda tecnologica Tencent. È una persona estremamente riservata e i dipendenti di Shein scherzano proprio su questo dicendo che talvolta rischiano di non riconoscerlo in ufficio. Con la quotazione in borsa questo potrebbe cambiare, perché l’attenzione mediatica aumenterà notevolmente. Xu non ha mai dato interviste, quindi la storia del fondatore e dell’azienda è principalmente frutto di ricostruzioni giornalistiche. Non si è certi neanche di dove sia nato esattamente: secondo alcuni ha origini statunitensi, mentre i media cinesi dicono che sia nato in Cina, a Zibo, una città manifatturiera nella provincia cinese dello Shandong. Secondo questa seconda versione i suoi genitori lavoravano nelle fabbriche di proprietà statale. Proverrebbe da un ambiente povero, e secondo alcuni le sue origini potrebbero averlo aiutato negli affari: sua madre era un’operaia tessile, il che lo avrebbe facilitato nel reperire contatti mentre costruiva la rete di fornitori di Shein. Nei primi anni 2000 studiò commercio internazionale all’Università della Scienza e della Tecnologia di Qingdao. In quegli anni la Cina era da poco diventata membro dell’Organizzazione Mondiale del Commercio, status che le garantì l’accesso ai mercati di tutto il mondo e che aprì grandi potenzialità per chi voleva vendere in Occidente, soprattutto grazie a internet: proprio in quegli anni fu creata la piattaforma di ecommerce Alibaba. Dopo la laurea, Xu si trasferì a Nanchino e in quel periodo creò vari siti web che vendevano di tutto, dagli occhiali alle teiere, dalle candele alle guarnizioni, sfruttando le produzioni locali a basso costo. Sviluppò e approfondì così anche la sua conoscenza del SEO, ossia di quelle tecniche per rendere facilmente raggiungibili i contenuti online attraverso i motori di ricerca. Fondò un’azienda di e-commerce, la Nanjing Dianwei Information Technology, insieme a due soci: Wang Xiaohu, che aveva una quota uguale alla sua, e Li Peng, con una quota di minoranza. Cominciarono ad affinare il modello per quello che sarebbe poi diventato Shein: piccoli ordini al dettaglio che venivano evasi rapidamente grazie alla velocità dei fornitori cinesi. Attraverso le competenze SEO di Xu l’azienda era in grado di individuare e promuovere velocemente le varie tendenze. Nel 2008 Xu creò SheInside, un rivenditore online di abiti da sposa con sede a Nanchino e predecessore di Shein. Secondo varie indiscrezioni e interviste, Xu avrebbe escluso i suoi due soci dagli affari in modo poco trasparente, prendendo il controllo dei conti correnti e sparendo. Non c’è mai stata una conferma da parte di Xu. Dopo qualche anno però SheInside cambiò nome in Shein, che portò avanti il modello sviluppato da Xu e dagli ex soci: l’idea era di puntare sul digitale e sulla velocità della manifattura cinese per conquistare direttamente il mercato europeo e americano (senza passare dalla Cina) e competere con i più grandi marchi di fast fashion, come Zara o H&M. Ancora oggi Shein prende le merci prodotte dalle sue fabbriche in Cina e le rivende direttamente al pubblico. L’azienda si basa su un flusso di produzione velocissimo e non ha una propria identità o una propria estetica, come per esempio gli altri marchi di fast fashion Zara o H&M, ma usa algoritmi e analisi dei dati per intercettare le mode dei vari paesi e riproporle il più velocemente possibile nelle sue nuove collezioni, spesso copiando esplicitamente le creazioni di stilisti più o meno famosi, replicandole con una qualità molto più bassa. Con questo sistema, Shein riesce a produrre nuove collezioni nel giro di pochi giorni, mentre i suoi principali rivali ci impiegherebbero in media tre settimane; inoltre, riesce a mettere online migliaia di nuovi capi ogni giorno, come magliette a 6 euro e vestiti estivi da 11 euro, incentivando l’acquisto anche attraverso sconti e promozioni. L’e-commerce di Shein è apprezzato in particolare da un pubblico di donne giovani per la scelta molto ampia di articoli e per i prezzi estremamente bassi; negli ultimi due anni è diventato inoltre molto popolare soprattutto grazie al ruolo dei social network. Al tempo stesso, ha cominciato ad attirare numerose critiche per un approccio che secondo vari punti di vista incentiva lo shopping sfrenato e la moda “a breve termine”, con un significativo impatto ambientale.
