In May 2006, Naspers acquired a 30% interest in Editora Abril. It also owns the Brazilian MTV and cable company Abril Grafica. Abril's first magazine lead Civita to claim "It all started with a duck", parodying Walt Disney's declaration that "I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by Mickey Mouse." Under its name it publishes titles like AnaMaria, Tititi, Minha Novela, Sou+Eu!, Quatro Rodas, Veja, Veja Rio, Veja São Paulo, Nova, Placar, Claudia,, , and Exame, as well as the Brazilian editions of Disney comics, Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Women's Health, Runner's World, and Playboy. The following year, Civita changed its name to Abril - referencing the month in which spring begins on the northern hemisphere - and published its first title, Donald Duck, in Brazil called Pato Donald, which continues to run to this date. Civita had initially founded his publisher as Editora Primavera, publishing an unsuccessful comic magazine named in Brazil Raio Vermelho. The company was founded in 1950 by Victor Civita in São Paulo and is now part of Grupo Abril. Editora Abril is a major Brazilian publisher and printing company and one of the biggest media holdings in Latin America. Some other characters that were important in this era (without having their own comic) were Maggy, Franklin, Blu, Angel and Thunder.Ībril is considered by many of the fans (mainly the oldest ones) as the publisher that had the best era of Monica's Gang at all, mainly because the stories published in Abril tend to be considered the most classic and memorable of the franchise. This publisher, different from the later ones, had rare introductions of new characters, usually focusing more on the original characters previously created by Mauricio de Sousa in the newspaper strips, like Monica, Jimmy Five, Smudge and Chuck Billy (these last two gaining more prominence in the 80s). In addition to Monica's Gang, Abril also became known for publishing in Brazil several popular American comics like Disney (being the publisher's flagship), Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Little Lulu (considered Monica's Gang's main rival in the sales). Abril was responsible for the title debuts: Mônica (1970), Cebolinha (1973), Pelezinho (1977), Cascão (1982) and Chico Bento (1982), all of these titles (with the exception of Pelezinho which was canceled in 1982) remained in publication until the end of the partnership with Mauricio de Sousa with Abril in 1986 and were continued by Editora Globo the following year. The publisher is known for being the first publisher to publish the Monica's Gang comics, having started in May 1970 until December 1986, totaling 16 years of publication.
