Filet Crochet Patterns and the Back Pages from the July 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla Magazine
This entry is part 6 of 6 in the series The Modern Priscilla - WWI - July 1917
Here are some housekeeping tips from the July 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla, as well as filet crochet patterns…. and lots of old Edwardian advertisements!
There are also even more recipes, an article on the nutritional value of eggs, and “Tested Household Devices” (featuring a vacuum insulated beverage container, and antiseptic nut cracker).
I really like the full color ad of a painted ballerina for Blue Jay corn relief.

Maternity Corset Ads and Cooking Ideas
This entry is part 1 of 14 in the series The Modern Priscilla - July 1913
Honestly, the best thing about these pages are the advertisements. I think I lost brain cells even skimming the cooking advice. It’s probably why I’m such a bad cook- this kind of writing bores me to tears. The advertisements are cool though! These pages contained a small ad for maternity corsets, which I found particularly interesting.
Also advertised were canned sardines, The Alaska Freezer, Jello, Coffee Jelly, Maternity Apparel, Karo Syrup, Hair Dye, and a variety of “Make Money from Home” ads.

How one woman made a success at dress making and Summer Recipes
This entry is part 9 of 14 in the series The Modern Priscilla - July 1913
This article is just very pithy, but uplifting. It’s a true story of how a woman, left widowed with two small children at the age of 30, became a seamstress and then started her own dress making shop.
The next page is summer recipes and hot weather cooking advice: “Recipes which may be prepared several hours before serving, and which help to solve the problem of what to have for supper when the thermometer hovers close to 90 in the shade”. Suggested meats included tongue. Yuck.

Early 1900s advertisements and housekeeping advice
This entry is part 8 of 14 in the series The Modern Priscilla - July 1913
These next few pages are a miscellany of advertisements and pithy articles. Another adjustable dress form advertisement, perfume advertisement, Blue-jay corn plasters ad, an advertisement for The AlbeMarle-Hoffman Hotel overlooking Madison Square in NYC (“a good room at $1.50 per day, and a good room with a bath for $2 per day “- imagine paying that in NYC nowadays!).

Home Making a Business, and other pages from the July 1917 issue of The Modern Priscilla
This entry is part 1 of 6 in the series The Modern Priscilla - WWI - July 1917
I think that the turn of the century business advice for women was just fascinating. It’s “The story of a woman’s success in adapting the materials at hand and developing from them a pleasant and profitable occupation….” . The middle section is about how to stop food waste, which in 1917 was estimated at $700,000 annually.
Paired with that article on how to make a profitable business as a lady, was a full page sugar advertisement for Domino sugar refinery.
The latest in interior design, including sample wallpaper patterns and the importance of selecting a good wall covering.
Finally, a story about how a resourceful young woman solved the issue of midsummer cooking and home decor, all while keeping cool and stress free.
