The Talent Pool HA! TV Comedy Network 1990

"Performance Artist" was the term of art in the late 80s. As producer Christine Ecklund remembers co-creator Albie Hecht's definition, "...longer form material, no joke tellers. A downtown feel."

Monologist Spalding Gray had a hipster success with his performance piece (and eventual film) "Swimming to Cambodia." His recitation of his travel, writing and acting experiences, mixed pathos and humor to engaged audiences for several years in New York theater.  

When MTV Networks launched HA! in 1990 we pitched channel head Debby Beece that among Gray's contemporaries were humorists with the goods that would hone the network's reputation with up and coming talent.

"The Talent Pool", an anthology of performance artists, set up shop in midtown Manhattan's Lamb's Theatre, site of a beautiful gospel brunch, and started casting. Between Chauncey Street and the network we settled on a pretty stellar bunch (pictured above from the top):  

• John Leguizamo is a writer and actor who went on to win four Tony Awards, appear in over 100 films, and whose Columbian/Latino roots and community are always up front.

• Lewis Black, who's angry rants about history, politics, religion, and cultural trends eventually gave him a regular perch on "The Daily Show."

• Jim Turner became a star when MTV presented him as his creation ‘Randee of the Redwoods’, and later acted in movies and TV. 

• Frank Maya was one of the first openly gay performers to gain a foothold in mainstream stand-up comedy, who sadly passed away from AIDS in 1995.

• Danitra Vance was a comedian and actress who came to great attention in the 1985 season of "Saturday Night Live." She was on The Talent Pool during her diagnosis and eventual death from breast cancer. She was awarded with an Obie and NAACP Image Award. 

• Chucklehead was a troupe whose comedy addressed fears of the Cold War, entropy, mortality, and the likelihood not enough tickets would be sold at their shows.

• Julie Hayden was a delightful writer and actress who was later in Ben Stiller's "The Cable Guy" with Jim Carrey, She was finding her way in the TV pilot season when she died of cancer in 1997. 

• Jeffrey Essman (not pictured) is often referred to as avant-garde, but he’s a hilarious writer, an often costumed performer and, a Benedictine monk.

• Barry Yourgrau (not pictured), a South African born writer and performer, has published several books and whose fictions have appeared in the New Yorker, Paris Review, VICE, Bomb, Poetry, Film Comment.

The show wasn't particularly highly rated, but we were completely taken by each of our fantastic cast and heartened when so many of them went on to highly visible and acclaimed careers. ..... Occupation: Librarian

Like Sugar (RH MC), she has a low alcohol tolerance, who also text her ex when drunk (it runs in the family) but not like Sugar who pretend that nothing happen, Angel remember all of it and will regret it for 5mins, would probably send out of context memes.

Likes: Macaroons, Romance Books, Autumn, HARUKOOOOOOOO!

Dislikes: Her apartment, her landlord, her younger siblings (Honey) failing grades

She has a secret life as an otaku that only Sweetheart (STNAF MC) and Ren knows. Weeb Cousin and Boyfriend unite!!! Tried to cosplay Hange once.

A Swiftie 4 life! Everytime Mother Taylor release a new album/song, she create fake scenarios that Ren dont love her just to fully grasp the emotion of the song. (And Ren trying to memorize the lyrics of all Taylor Swift song)

Her motto in life: So it turns out that being an adult is mostly just googling how to do stuff. Send help!

Occupation: Part time Vet assistant, currently studying Veterinarian Medicine

Mi Vida (Cannibal Sweetheart MC) and Dove are currently in the same university. Camping buddies with "YOU" (You and Him MC)

Likes: Animals, Macha Green Tea, Nature, Krow's sketches

Dislikes: Dirty Surroundings, Summer, Horror Movies

She met Krow in Mcdonalds when Angel (with his boyfriend Ren) make them order a chicken nuggets to avail student discount (and a happy meal). While River recording it for "memories" :D

Love to pats Krows head just to annoy him. Also hates chicken nuggets and fries. So, match made in heaven as they say.

Her motto in life: I stress about stress before that's even stress to stress about.

Name: Honey ▶ Age: 21 years old ▶ She/They ▶ Voice HC: Daki (@ringringringbananafone MC)

Occupation: works as a part time cashier in a convenience store, currently studying Computer Engineering

Honey likes to do weekly 'therapy' shopping with her cousins: the twins, Cara Mia (CWP MC) and Sweetheart. Would cry later bc they all bought stupid things thay they didnt need after all.

Likes: Sherlock Holmes, spicy ramen, Mallows, Manhwa

Dislikes: Her older sister expectations, studying (sometimes), making decisions, responsibilities

Bestfriend with Ames and Seon. Prank buddies with Vain and Elliot.

Loves to flirt with Fone just to make him blush. (Note: Krow accidentally spill about Fone having a big crush on Honey in a truth and dare game with Angel, Ren and Dove.) Still dont know if they want a relationship with him or they just want to become Mallows Mom. Had major commitment issues.

Her motto in life: Will I end the semester or will the semester end me??? Stay tuned.

I promise...I'd divorce him if he asked..we just need to be married for more than 90 seconds.

It's really funny I get this ask after playing some Stardew Valley with Nick where we play as Krow and Fone (respectively) and they're married.

Anyway.

Krow would only REALLY get jealous if you like... openly simp and gush for them. Like go on of how handsome/sweet/lovely/other positive things Elliot is.

Like, the logical part of his brain knows it's just a game and games are fun. Many games allow you to romance characters in them. Yet there's this part of him... that STILL gets jealous like he would if you were gushing over someone IRL. It is something that... bothers him about himself.

But if you just play the game and don't super gush over your game spouse, Krow should be okay. Should be.

In fact if Krow were to play himself (and single player), he'd probably marry Leah, cause she's an artist as well and likes the outdoors.

Hangin’ at 870.

The first Fred/Alan office was pretty funky. At the top of a mid-priced Manhattan, New York hotel at 870 7th Avenue, was a hastily assembled tower, only accessible by going to the top floor of the hotel and then squeezing into an elevator the size of a large phone booth.

When you got off on our floor –not for nothing, the original Jackie Gleason production company– you saw stucco stalactites above and pop art rug fragments from every floor in the hotel.

But, like any workplace it was the people who gathered that made the difference. Over the years we had three office locations and about 100 co-workers. On a lot of posts in this archive they get mentioned or credited, but it’s about time we showed some of them from 870 in photos taken around 1987.
