One of the most popular cosmetic requests from clients is to have brighter, whiter teeth. When considering your options, it is important to consult your dentist to make sure you have all the facts and understand how they may affect your mouth.
A variety of factors can affect the colour of your teeth including food, drink, tobacco, age, injury,  dental implants and some medications. Understanding what is causing the discolouration is important to properly whiten your teeth.
Teeth whitening products contain a low percentage of bleach, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which help to make the teeth appear whiter and brighter. This method will not work on crowns, veneers, bridges, fillings or if the discolouration is due to medications or injury and may not be suitable for all clients.
Our lovely client D.S. came to Manor Dental Centre, Oadby, Leicester in search of the very best Tooth Whitening Treatment. We think it’s safe to say what a great result! Let us help you get that colour difference you’re searching for.

Caligula’s Garden of Delights, Unearthed and Restored
Tumblr media
The fourth of the 12 Caesars, Caligula — officially, Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus — was a capricious, combustible first-century populist remembered, perhaps unfairly, as the empire’s most tyrannical ruler. As reported by Suetonius, the Michael Wolff of ancient Rome, he never forgot a slight, slept only a few hours a night and married several times, lastly to a woman named Milonia.
During the four years that Caligula occupied the Roman throne, his favorite hideaway was an imperial pleasure garden called Horti Lamiani, the Mar-a-Lago of its day. The vast residential compound spread out on the Esquiline Hill, one of the seven hills on which the city was originally built, in the area around the current Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
There, just on the edge of the city, villas, shrines and banquet halls were set in carefully constructed “natural” landscapes. An early version of a wildlife park, the Horti Lamiani featured orchards, fountains, terraces, a bath house adorned with precious colored marble from all over the Mediterranean, and exotic animals, some of which were used, as in the Colosseum, for private circus games.
When Caligula was assassinated in his palace on the Palatine Hill in 41 A.D., his body was carried to the Horti Lamiani, where he was cremated and hastily buried before being moved to the Mausoleum of Augustus on the Campus Martius, north of the Capitoline Hill. According to Suetonius, the elite garden was haunted by Caligula’s ghost.
Historians have long believed that the remains of the lavish houses and parkland would never be recovered. But this spring, Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Cultural Activities and Tourism will open the Nymphaeum Museum of Piazza Vittorio, a subterranean gallery that will showcase a section of the imperial garden that was unearthed during an excavation from 2006 to 2015. The dig, carried out beneath the rubble of a condemned 19th-century apartment complex, yielded gems, coins, ceramics, jewelry, pottery, cameo glass, a theater mask, seeds of plants such as citron, apricot and acacia that had been imported from Asia, and bones of peacocks, deer, lions, bears and ostriches.
“The ruins tell extraordinary stories, starting with the animals,” said Mirella Serlorenzi, the culture ministry’s director of excavations. “It is not hard to imagine animals, some caged and some running wild, in this enchanted setting.” The science of antiquities department of the Sapienza University of Rome collaborated on the project.
The objects and structural remnants on display in the museum paint a vivid picture of wealth, power and opulence. Among the stunning examples of ancient Roman artistry are elaborate mosaics and frescoes, a marble staircase, capitals of colored marble and limestone, and an imperial guard’s bronze brooch inset with gold and mother-of-pearl. “All the most refined objects and art produced in the Imperial Age turned up,” Dr. Serlorenzi said.
The classicist Daisy Dunn said the finds were even more extravagant than scholars had anticipated. “The frescoes are incredibly ornate and of a very high decorative standard,” noted Dr. Dunn, whose book “In The Shadow of Vesuvius” is a dual biography of Pliny the Elder — a contemporary of Caligula’s — and his nephew Pliny the Younger. “Given the descriptions of Caligula’s licentious lifestyle and appetite for luxury, we might have expected the designs to be quite gauche.”
The Horti Lamiani were commissioned by Lucius Aelius Lamia, a wealthy senator and consul who bequeathed his property to the emperor, most likely during the reign of his friend Tiberius from A.D. 14 to 37. When Caligula succeeded him — it is rumored that Caligula and the Praetorian Guard prefect Macro hastened the death of Tiberius by smothering him with a pillow — he moved into the main house.
In an evocative eyewitness account, the philosopher Philo, who visited the estate in A.D. 40 on behalf of the Jews of Alexandria, and his fellow emissaries had to trail behind Caligula as he inspected the sumptuous residences “examining the men’s rooms and the women’s rooms … and giving orders to make them more costly.” The emperor, wrote Philo, “ordered the windows to be filled up with transparent stones resembling white crystal that do not hinder the light, but which keep out the wind and the heat of the sun.”
Evidence suggests that after Caligula’s violent death — he was hacked to bits by his bodyguards — the house and garden survived at least until the Severan dynasty, which ruled from A.D. 193 to 235. By the fourth century, the gardens had apparently fallen into desuetude, and statuary in the abandoned pavilions was broken into pieces to build the foundations of a series of spas. The statues were not discovered until 1874, three years after Rome was made the capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy. With the Esquiline Hill in the midst of a building boom, the Italian archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani nosed around freshly excavated construction sites and uncovered an immense gallery with an alabaster floor and fluted columns of giallo antico, considered the finest of the yellow marbles.
He later stumbled upon a rich deposit of classical sculptures that, at some point in the horti’s history, had been deliberately hidden to protect them. The treasures included the Lancellotti Discobolus, now housed at the National Museum of Rome; the Esquiline Venus and a bust of Commodus depicted as Hercules, now at the Capitoline Museums. In short time, the sculptures were carted off, the foundation of an apartment building was laid, and the ancient ruins were reburied.
The latest excavation of the horti unfolded under the detritus of the residences, which had been evacuated in the 1970s in the wake of a building collapse. Much like the 2012 exhumation of Richard III in Leicester, England, the unburying involved a modern parking site.
Sixteen years ago, the three-and-a-half-acre property was purchased by Enpam, a private foundation that manages pensions for Italian doctors and dentists. Exploratory core drilling for a new headquarters and a six-level underground garage brought forth a wealth of first-century relics, from the type of window glass described by Philo to lead pipes stamped with the name of Claudius, Caligula’s uncle and successor.
As construction crews erected the five-story office building, archaeologists in a trench 18 feet below street level gingerly screened and scraped away soil. In a study lab across town, paleobotanists and archaeozoologists analyzed fragments, and researchers painstakingly repaired a 10-foot-high wall fresco painted with pigment made from ground cinnabar. The entire $3.5 million conservation and restoration project was underwritten by Enpam.
Ground was broken for the Nymphaeum Museum in 2017. “The new space, in the basement of Enpam, brings to light one of the mythical places of the empire’s capital, one of the garden residences loved by the emperors,” said Daniela Porro, the museum director.
What all of this does for Caligula’s seemingly irredeemable reputation is an open question. He emerges from Suetonius’s “The Twelve Caesars,” written 80 years after the emperor was bumped off, as utterly depraved: having incestuous relationships with his sisters, sleeping with anyone he liked the look of, using criminals as food for his wild beasts when beef became too pricey and insisting that a loyal subject who had vowed to give his own life if the emperor survived an illness should carry through on his promise and die.
Mary Beard, a professor of classics at Cambridge University, posited that while Caligula might have been assassinated because he was a monster, it is equally possible that he was made into a monster because he was assassinated. In “SPQR,” her rich history of ancient Rome, she argues that “it is hard to resist the conclusion that, whatever kernel of truth they might have, the stories told about him are an inextricable mixture of fact, exaggeration, willful misinterpretation and outright invention — largely constructed after his death, and largely for the benefit of the new emperor, Claudius.”
Whether Caligula got a raw deal from history is a subject of hot and unyielding debate. “There is clearly some bias in the sources,” Dr. Dunn allowed. “But even without that, it is difficult to envision him as a good emperor. I doubt these new discoveries will do much to rehabilitate his character. But they should open up new vistas onto his world, and reveal it to be every bit as paradisiacal as he desired it to be.”

A Warning of Women's for lip injections is become terribly wrong
New Post has been published on http://www.breakingnewsexpose.com/weird/a-warning-of-womens-for-lip-injections-is-become-terribly-wrong/
A Warning of Women's for lip injections is become terribly wrong
U.K woman takes steps after the last moment when lip injection almost got into disaster.
In August of this year, Rachael Knappier had a Botox party at a friend’s house in Leicester, England, with the intention of getting just a few injections to help clear wrinkles on his forehead.
After several glasses of prosecco, a 29-year-old woman decided that her lips would have a discount rate.
My friend was happy about this beautician and how great she was, so I decided to go on, “said Knappier The Sun.” Cosmetics – which I assumed as a sister at the time – did not ask me to sign some approval forms to have alarm bells . But be part of a party with my friends, who took all the earnestness of having a fill in my face.
Lip injection
Knappier said that the beautician had noticed that he had suffered a teenage injury on his lips and offered to give him a syringe.
“To be fair, she told me, go and think about it in the kitchen, but she found my weakness,” she said. “My lips are the only thing that really worries me about my appearance.”
Cosmetics applied some numbing cream and started the injections that Knappier called “very painful.” A few hours later her lips began to swell, and Knappier called the cosmetician in panic.
She was visibly shocked, she put her hands on her mouth, told me I had an allergic reaction, and needed an antihistamine and got into the hospital, “she remembered, the doctors concluding that Knappier had no allergic reaction and advised her to rinse her filler .
Once at home, the injection pressure caused her upper lips to split. Knappier’s mother suggested that she turn to the Consultation Clinic in London, not a surgical clinic for aesthetic enhancement she watched in the social media.
The owner told me that I had to get to London immediately and that an emergency physician was waiting for her, “said Knappier.” She said that by viewing my pictures, her medical team suspected a blood vessel occlusion, meaning that the fill was injected into the artery and could lead to necrosis – the death of soft tissue. I honestly thought I was going to die.

We have been innudated with requests for our lovely Rachel, who was botched and mismanaged by a local beautician, (who is unrepentant and is still practising). We've attached this video taken shortly after the injections themselves, and we'll post a series of videos if you wish? Who would like to see the video, of her now, and the difference now she has had a little time to recover and of course been treated several times by our Dr James? We're happy to post with Rachel's permission. Her capillary reflow at this stage was 6 seconds (normal is under 2), which means that the blood supply to her lips is being compromised and starving the tissue of vital oxygen. Rachel has asked we used her words with her permission to let you all know how she is doing. "Thank you all for all your messages, kind thoughts, and concern for me. It was without a doubt one of the most distressing things I've been through. My lips have started to reduce in size but I am left wondering what damage has been done, and am completely traumatised. I would never ever advise going to a beautician, for what is essentially a medical treatment. I will be taking legal action, and therefore will not be able to discuss the particulars of this at this time, but I will keep you posted. It's a long recovery with further treatment ahead. lesson learned. Time will tell how well I recover. I don't want to think about what would have happened if this post hadn't been picked up by the Consultant Clinic, so please learn from this and be safe. No to beauticians. See next post for next stage of treatment. As soon as I have a rubber stamped negligent judgment (and I am moving speedily), I will name the beautician and the beauty salon who made profit from me, in the interests of safety. I won't stop until she no longer practices, and I want to create awareness, no matter what".She's heartened by your well wishes, so thank you and NEVER EVER consider a beautician. Ever. 🆘🆘⚠️🚨DO NOT REPRODUCE ANYWHERE WITHOUT EXPRESS WRITTEN CONSENT BY THE CONSULTANT CLINIC🆘🆘⚠️🚨
A post shared by The Consultant Clinic (@consultant_clinic) on Oct 4, 2018 at 11:55pm PDT
Knappier took several doses of dissolving agent into her lips, which began to reduce swelling almost 72 hours later. Now, three months later, she says her lips are almost normal.
After her complicated process, Knappier learned that her cosmetics had previously been released from prison several months ago and said she plans to take legal action against a woman who says she is not competent to perform these procedures.
“I would never approach a botox party, I’m a hybrid that I did not do my research, and I just assumed that anyone who injects botox and fillers is at a medical school,” Knappier admitted. “I could have had the same reaction with a doctor, but the difference is that they knew what to do to treat him.”
Knappier turned to founder of the Safety of Beauty campaign, Antonio Maricond, to discuss UK implementation regulations that would prohibit unlicensed healthcare professionals from making cosmetic enhancements. She also created an Internet petition that called on the British Government to enact regulations to prevent another person from receiving injections from a person other than a licensed nurse, doctor or dentist.

Increased Salary with a Mеdiсаl Degree: Consider your Options
Medical Physicians are probably one of the highest paid professions in the world. These professionals make a lot of money and have the ability to set their own schedules to some extent, but it’s certainly not an easy job. Doctors provide diagnosis, treatment, medicines and counselling to people suffering from a variety of illnesses and diseases.
To be part of the medical profession it takes years and years of study and sometimes life just doesn’t allow you to take time off for your studies. This is where distance learning online courses in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and the rest of the Middle East come in handy.
Even with a promise of higher salaries, the medical world may not be something that is for you. However, these are various routes such as Psychology of Work (a course dedicated to people interested in the HR profession) or aMasters in Diabetes (a course designed to help practitioners understand how to combat diabetes through clinical research)
Nevertheless, this article discusses the requirements of someone interested in the medical field
Eight Years at the least!
Upon completing your undergraduate degree, you would have at the least another 8 yeas of full-time schooling before you can become a medical doctor. If you want to specialize you may be looking at close to 10-12 years of additional study time. The time commitment and financial commitment is enormous and this makes them the number one reasons why most people opt out of the medical world professions. So if you like working with people and want to become a ‘healer’ just be sure you are truly interested in the medicine world to dedicate the first few years of your young life. Your friends may already have started their careers in sales or marketing or finance, but your dedication will be your success!
Shadow a Doctor
This is an interesting suggestion, before you start with medical school, get in touch with your local physician and request to shadow/follow them around for a week! This could be clubbed with internship activities for your high school or IB diploma in the last couple of years and then you would get a true sense of what it means to help people. You could also go to the extent of shadowing several doctors in different departments and you would then be in an informed position before taking the plunge!
If shadowing is not possible, consider volunteering at a local hospital, a nursing home or any other health care related establishment. This way you will gain valuable exposure that will not only support your medical degree application but give you first hand experience of what is the scope and range of the industry.
How big are the Salaries?
Doctors can make anywhere between $80,000 a year to well over $200,000 a year depending on the specialties and their experience, the reputation of the facility and the doctor itself. We have heard numerous stories of doctors traveling from all over the world to consult on special surgical cases as well as month long waiting lists to meet a renowned specialist such as cardiac surgeons, brain surgeons and so on.
The salary points are influenced by all the above points but with all the years of hard work and dedication the difference in earnings from someone in a sales position is significant! Dentists tend to own their own practice and consult in larger hospitals, the potential earnings is huge if you provide proper facilities and services. We all know we check with family and friends (even on Facebook groups) prior to consulting with a doctor, dentist or paediatrist as we want the best for ourselves and our families.
The Downsides
Just as there are significant advantages to being in the medical world there are also a number of downsides to being a doctor.
·         If you are a surgeon or an obstetric or an anesthesiologist, you would be on call for at least half the month – day and night.
·         Sometimes you are not even allowed to take a break during holiday season, such as Christmas, Eid, Diwali and so on.
·         Your family life will be structured around your work schedules and may not always be fair to your spouse and children.
·         Malpractice Insurance for doctors is extremely expensive
But we all need doctors and surgeons and dentists and so on… don’t we? These are also major reasons who medical professionals are so highly paid, replacing them is not as easy as replacing an admin staff member.
Other options/possibilities:
So, as I mentioned at the start of this article, after reading through all the ups and down of the medical world and gaining some hands-on experience through internships, you decide this is not for you but you still want to ‘help’ people…then you may want to consider becoming a nurse or a physician’s assistant.
Nursing like doctors are as knowledgeable and as informed but unable to give out prescriptions. It is the nurses who actually take care of in-patients and make sure recovery is going as planned/expected. Doctors visit their patients once a day on their rounds and that’s it!
A physician’s assistants position also allows you to work with patients, pays fairly well and is less demanding in terms of time commitment, financial commitment and stress!
What other options are available via distance education in UAE? How about an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to start with? It does not take long to complete this course (varies from country to country) and plays an extremely important role intervening in medical emergencies!
I would recommend you investigate the local/regional possibilities such as the University of Leicester distance learning masters’ programs in health & psychology.
Checklist Before signing up
Here is a simple checklist to review prior to investing in your medical degree:
Can you commit to eight (8)years or more of studying after your undergraduate degree?
        Are you good at calculus?
Are you capable of absorbing large volumes of information?
        Have you shadowed a doctor?
Have you considered volunteer work while in school?
Do you have an education and career roadmap?
Can you handle the stress of the job?
Have you addressed all the cons?
Are you able to accept constructive criticism?
Is research of more interest to you or is helping people?
How much does it cost to start my own medical practice in the future?
When you have honestly answered, all the above questions, then I believe you will be in a position to decide whether or not the medical world is a right fit for you. Do not be daunted by this article or the scope of toil mentioned above, we need and want doctors, but doctors need to be sympathetic and genuinely concerned individuals…
Resource Box/Media:
The author of this article recommends Stafford Global, which is engaged in offering distance learning courses and online education in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Qatar, Riyadh, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Middle East. Stafford works in collaboration with prestigious UK based Universities such as the University of Leicester that is QAA certified and internationally recognized.
