If you are someone who struggles with dental hygiene due to mental health issues or neurodiversity and you just can't seem to change your routine or motivate yourself, I highly recommend investing in the right tools for you. Often advice starts with "Just form a habit! Just set a reminder!" but these things are not always enough to help when there are external stressors that cause avoidance.
An electric toothbrush and small portable waterpik have been amazing for me. I hate flossing, I find it tedious, and painful, and I avoid it. A waterpik on the other hand is fast, easy, and extremely effective. I also didn't realize how tedious I found brushing until I got an affordable electric brush. It helps do the majority of the work for me, feels nice, and has a timer to help me brush for the right amount of time. I hated mouthwash because it always burns my tongue, so I switched to alcohol-free mouthwash that doesn't.
These small changes have vastly changed my relationship to dental hygiene. If you can't get yourself to the bathroom, keep your brush by the bed. If you hate mint toothpaste use kids toothpaste with a more gentle flavor. If you need to have a brush on the go carry Colgate Wisps. Stop trying to force yourself to fit into an uncomfortable system, instead try to build one that fits your needs.

Your occasional executive dysfunction reminder that my dental hygienist told me it was okay to brush without paste if it meant getting my teeth brushed at all. The next dental appointment I had after putting it into practice, she told me my teeth looked way better than last time

Hey! You! With the teeth!
This is your daily reminder to care about your dental health!
You need to brush them at least once a day with a clinically certified toothpaste for at least two minutes, twice daily preferably! Your teeth and your gums! Because plaque mostly builds up around the base, and that’s the stuff you need to clean away! Electric toothbrushes are recommended due to a more thorough cleaning, though manual ones are good too! Just use them and clean all the way to your back molars! And remember to replace your toothbrush at least every three months!
You need to clean between your teeth at least once a day too! With floss, or as many dentists recommend, toothpicks! These are recommended because many people don’t know how to properly floss, but toothpicks are a lot more intuitive! They come in many varieties, wood, rubber, or little brushes! If you use wooden ones, remember to soften them first with a bit of water! You don’t need to do this with rubber or brush ones, and unlike the wooden ones, those are often reusable! Insert whichever one you choose between your teeth until you feel friction between the toothpick and teeth! You need that friction to remove any plaque buildup! It may hurt a little and even bleed a tiny bit during the first few times! That’s completely normal and expected, it’ll get better with time if you keep it up and do it daily! Usually after two weeks people notice improvement! If you don’t, talk to your dentist! There are times when a toothpick can be too big though! Don’t force a too-large toothpick through a place it doesn’t fit! You want a little friction, not a need to force it! If you use reusable toothpicks, remember to rinse them thoroughly after use, just like toothbrushes!
You should also go for a checkup with your dentist at least once a year! Preferably twice! Don’t be ashamed if you got a cavity or otherwise damaged or hurt your teeth, the dentist won’t judge you! They are there to help you and keep your teeth healthy! They understand that life happens and sometimes shit gets fucked! They’re tooth doctors, they don’t judge you for getting sick, they just want to help you get better and keep healthy afterwards! If any part of this post is difficult for you to keep up, ask them for help! They will probably know some way to make this all achievable for you!
Teeth are important! They’re not just bones in your head, they have shit connected to them and inside of them that’s important! Teeth have nerves inside of them! They keep your jaw in proper shape so that your inner ear stays stabilized! If you lose your teeth, your bones shift and your hearing gets worse! Teeth are directly connected to the blood supply of the rest of the head! If you get an infection in them that goes untreated, it can transmit through the blood to the rest of your body and then shit’s really fucked!
Dental health is important! If anyone says otherwise, punch their teeth in and see how quickly they change their tune! This has been a shouted dental health message!

oral health
it's something we often overlook, but taking care of our teeth and gums is super important for our overall well-being. here are some simple tips to keep your smile bright and healthy:
brush twice a day: make sure to brush your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. use a fluoride toothpaste and brush for at least two minutes each time to remove plaque and bacteria.
floss daily: don't forget to floss! flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gumline, where your toothbrush can't reach.
rinse with mouthwash: using an antibacterial mouthwash can help kill germs and freshen your breath. swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds after brushing and flossing.
eat a balanced diet: what you eat can impact your oral health. try to limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, which can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. instead, opt for healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.
drink plenty of water: staying hydrated is important for your oral health too. water helps wash away food particles and bacteria, and it also helps stimulate saliva production, which neutralizes acids and protects your teeth.
visit your dentist regularly: don't skip your dental check-ups! seeing your dentist for regular cleanings and exams can help catch any issues early and prevent more serious problems down the road.
avoid tobacco: smoking and using other tobacco products can wreak havoc on your oral health, increasing your risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer. if you smoke, consider quitting for the sake of your smile and your overall health.
remember, taking care of your teeth and gums is an investment in your long-term health and happiness. so make oral health a priority and keep smiling bright!

Dentists need training to work with ADHD and/or autistic patients, especially around sensory issues. I've never had a dental appointment where the dentist or hygienist didn't assume that I was too stupid to know how to take care of my teeth or too lazy to care.
Listen, I know that I should be brushing my teeth twice a day. I know that I should be flossing. I know that I shouldn't rinse my mouth after brushing. The reason I don't do it the "right" way is not because I don't know better or that I'm too lazy. It's sensory issues (and a bit of executive dysfunction)!
For me, the taste of the toothpaste just hanging out in my mouth, the dryness is causes, hell, just the feeling of the brush on my gums. At best it's unpleasant. Often it's physically painful.
I would argue that other people with sensory issues also know what they should be doing when it comes to taking care of their teeth. It isn't a knowledge gap on our end, and treating us like we just don't know any better does nothing to help the issue.
I've never had a dentist or hygienist try to understand why this is such a barrier. They've never worked with me to find new ways that get me a little closer to 'good' oral hygiene. They've never educated about how to brush or floss, especially if you can't the way I'm supposed to. They've only ever told me the rules that I already know:
That I shouldn't drink as much pop as I do.
That I should brush twice without rinsing.
That I should floss.
That I should come in every 6 months.
They've never stopped to consider that I physically can't do that.
Today, I had to stop the hygienist in the middle of the cleaning because I just couldn't take the squealing of the water pick. Even before stopping them, I was gripping the arm of the chair so hard my hands lost all color. The hygienist was shocked that it was so painful. In meeting with the dentist, I mentioned that the sound of the drill is INCREDIBLY painful to me. She suggested music.
It was immediately clear that we were talking about different things.
Best I can tell, she seems to think that it's just an annoyance. Like I'm hearing a fly buzzing around the room and it's frustrating me. That is not my experience. My experience with the drill is intense, unavoidable, piercing pain. Music doesn't distract from that.
In my view, dentists are the experts when it comes to oral health, but that expertise is useless if you can't communicate it to a patient to meet their needs. When I bring up my sensory issues and the dentist has less than nothing to offer, that expertise is useless.
Dentists not being trained to work with sensory issues throws the burden of fixing the problem back on us, often with a GIANT helping of guilt. That makes us less likely to attend to our oral health not more.
This is exactly why it's been 7 years since I've been to the dentist, and honestly, it might well be 7 more at this rate

What would kakuzu react when hidan is wearing braces on his teeth?
*Sasori doing dental exams* Sasori: Hmm ... Konan, I've never seen teeth so white and straight before. Whatever you're doing, keep it up. Konan: Thank, I will! Sasori: Alright, Hidan, come here. Hidan, grumbling: Alright, but no gay shit, puppet-dick. Blondie may like you stickin' things into his mouth, but I don't. Sasori: *quiet as he peers intently into Hidan's mouth* Sasori: It appears that many of your back teeth have grown in crookedly, and you have several where it looks like the spacing is severely off. Quite a few cavities, too. Well, no matter; Deidara and Itachi have the same issues. I'm going to be making them braces. After I fill in your cavities, I'll make you some as well. Come back to me later tonight, and -- Hidan: BRACES?! Are you kidding me, asshole?? I'm fucking twenty-two years old! I ain't letting you put braces in my mouth! *Kakuzu walks into the room* Kakuzu: Hidan. Stop squabbling. Sasori can do this for you, for free. Do you have any idea how much this would cost at a regular dentist's office? Hidan: But ... Kakuzu: And be grateful. I wish I could have been seen by somebody when I was a younger man. If I HAD, I likely wouldn't have as many dental issues as I do today. Hidan: The fuck are you talking about?! Your teeth are absolutely perfect! You -- Kakuzu: *slowly pulls out his top and bottom rows of teeth, revealing that he has dentures* Kakuzu: Well? What do you say now? Hidan: Hidan, quietly, to Sasori: I'll come by later tonight, Sasori-san.
