Chapter 5: You Will Always Have My Heart
Eugene Roe x Violet Elwood
Summary: Eugene didn’t know that love could hurt so much, until he met Violet and then all he could think about was her. As Violet’s condition worsens, Eugene grows to realise just how fragile love is. Warnings: mentions of hospitals, critically ill oc, heart break, grief, death
Tumblr media
November 20th 1941
Eugene tapped his foot against the cool, tiled floor of the hospital waiting room, knocking along to Artie Shaw on the radio on the nurses station. Violet was in for a check up with the Cardiologist but she’d been gone a little while now and the longer she was away the more anxious Eugene became.
A few minutes later, Violet pushed open the large double doors and made her way down the corridor to greet him, pulling him in for a hug.
“What happened? What did the doctor say? What’s the…?”
“Eugene calm down,” Violet laughed, pulling back from his arms and cupping his cheek, “Everything’s fine, well as fine as things can be. I’m fine, Gene.” She reassured him, pressing her lips to his. He melted into the kiss, the thoughts rushing through his mind slowed as her lips moved on his own.
“But what…” kiss “did the…” kiss “Vi…” kiss. Eugene gave up trying to speak and instead kissed Violet back firmly, his hand coming to rest on her lower back.
“You talk too much, Gene,” she grinned, smoothing her fingers through his dark locks, playfully pulling at the strands and causing him to sigh at the contact.
“You’re gonna be the death of me, Vi,” he mumbled, burying his head into her neck and holding her close.
“I’m afraid that I’ll be the one dying first, Gene,” she smiled sadly, holding him close to her.
The hustle and bustle of the hospital faded around them and nothing else mattered in that moment. All Eugene could concentrate on was the woman in his arms, the woman he loved so dearly.
Violet felt a small tear trailing down her cheek as Eugene held her. She hated lying to him but she knew how upset he’d be if she told him the truth. At least this way they could still enjoy their time together without having the time limit the doctor expected hanging over them. Violet tried to push the doctor's words from her mind as Eugene led her from the hospital and towards the bus stop. She hated being so reliant on other people but as simple daily tasks grew ever harder and even breathing was an effort she knew she didn’t have much choice. As they took their seat on the bus, the exertion of the morning caught up with her and she slipped into a dreamless sleep in Eugene’s arms.

December 8th 1941
Violet was sleeping peacefully in her hospital bed, the early morning light creeping through the blinds, illuminating her pale features. She looked tired, with dark, purple circles painted underneath her bright, blue eyes, her cheeks hollowed and her cheekbones protruding more than they used to. But she was still his beautiful girl, Eugene thought to himself as he pushed her blonde locks from her forehead.
The radio was buzzing dramatically in the corner and Eugene stood to move closer, turning up the volume as the president, Franklin D Roosevelt’s voice filled the room.
‘Yesterday, December 7, 1941 a date which will live in infamy the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.’
Eugene froze beside the radio, listening to the president addressing Congress. The speech continued and he took a seat beside the radio, turning up the volume and listening as the president's words resonated with him.
‘The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost.’
His words flowed out of the radio, sickening everyone in the hospital, no one walked past the door.
‘I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire’
Eugene took in a sharp breath, the US had declared war on Japan. They were going to war. What would that mean for him? For Violet? Before he could get too lost in his thoughts, Violet stirred under the covers.
“Gene?” She mumbled sleepily and he was by her side in an instant, smoothing his hand over her cheek.
“I’m here, Sweetheart. I’m here. How are you feeling?” He crouched beside her bed, resting his head on their clasped hands.
“My… chest hurts,” she mumbled, her eyes sliding shut before she opened them again. She had a procedure the other day and it had taken its toll on her, she was weaker now. Every day seemed like a struggle and he heard one of the nurses mention it was unlikely that she’d be going home again.
“I know, Sweetheart,” Eugene moved so he could lay on the bed beside her and she snuggled against his chest. He could feel her heart beating slowly beside him, lub dub, lub dub.
“What was on the radio?” Violet asked, glancing up at Gene.
He smiled sadly at her, unsure of how to break the news to her, “You know Pearl Harbour was attacked?”
She nodded slowly. “Well the US has declared war on Japan.”
Violet pushed herself up carefully so she could face him properly, “Does that… does that mean you’ll have to go? Go to war?”
Eugene shook his head, “I don’t know yet, but I promise I’m not leaving you unless I have to. You hear me?”
Violet smiled, reaching up but Eugene craned his neck so she could reach his lips easily, planting a small kiss before laying back down.
Violet soon slipped back into her slumber but Eugene couldn’t rest, his mind drifting to the President’s words. What would that mean for his future?

December 11th 1941
“Good mornin’, Sweetheart,” Eugene greeted her, a bunch of flowers in his hand as he moved around the bed, pressing a sweet kiss to her lips.
“Good mornin’, Gene, she smiled weakly, reaching out her hand to hold his. He squeezed it gently, pulling up a chair to sit beside her bed. “How are you feelin’ today?”
“She shrugged her shoulders, “Same as yesterday, Gene.”
Eugene nodded slowly, she’d been having a bad week, lots of chest pains, lots of episodes of breathlessness. She was now on oxygen full time and had a nurse coming in every half an hour to monitor her vitals.
Eugene knew that things weren’t going to get better than this, they could only get worse. One of the nurses warned him that she may eventually slip into a coma if she became too weak. It broke his heart to see her suffering so much. She barely ate, most of her nutrition was given via liquid food, and she could barely move. Eugene had taken her for a walk around the hospital grounds in a wheelchair the other day and it was nice to see her smile again.
“How’s your family?” Violet asked, raining her head from the pillow to glance at him, her blue eyes shining brighter than ever but the rest of her seemed to be fading faster by the day.
“They’re okay. They said they’ll be poppin’ by later to see you. Wanted to check on you,” Eugene reassured her. He picked up her hairbrush from the bedside cabinet, smoothing it carefully through her blonde locks. She’d always taken such care of her hair, always neatly curled and pinned, but now it lay flat against her head, lifeless.
“Thank you, Gene. For everything.”
“Of course. I love you, of course I’m gonna look after you,” he pressed his lips against her forehead and she sighed sleepily. “Do you want me to go so you can get some rest?”
“No, no please stay,” Violet shuffled cautiously across the bed to make room for Eugene, “Will you hold me for a while.”
Eugene smiled widely at her, “Of course, Sweetheart.” He slid in easily beside her, wrapping his body around her tiny, weak frame.

“I’m afraid it’s not good news, Eugene,” Violet's father explained.
The family were sitting in the waiting room, her mother and sister crying quietly in the corner. Her father had tears in his eyes but he was fighting them, trying to remain strong for his family's sake.
“The doctors don’t think she has long. I’m so sorry, son.” Violet’s father placed a hand on his shoulder, giving it a quick squeeze before moving back to be with his family.
Eugene was frozen to the spot, the noise of the hospital fading around him into a blur of white noise. The flowers he’d been clutching fell limp to the floor, their petals splaying across the tiles. His mouth was dry, air barely reaching his lungs before it escaped in a sharp breath. He felt his knees buckle, hitting the ground hard, but he didn’t notice the pain. He didn’t feel anything, not anymore.

December 16th 1941
Violet’s breaths were short and shallow, her eyes closed as she rested peacefully against Eugene’s shoulder. Her family all sat around her, their eyes rimmed red and puffy. They had all cried enough over the last few days that Eugene thought he’d never cry again. How could he ever cry over anything else when the worst possible thing had already happened?
“Gene,” Violet mumbled weakly, causing Eugene to jump slightly.
“Yes, Vi.”
“I don’t want to die here, not in this hospital,” she glanced up at him, her hand cupping his cheek. “I want to go back to the lake, it’s our place. I want to go back to the lake, Gene.”
Eugene looked down at her sadly, “We can’t go the lake, Sweetheart. You’re not well enough.”
“Gene, I’m never going to get any better than this. The worst thing that could happen is that I’d die and I’m dying anyway,” she retorted, she understood his anxiousness but at the same time she needed to do this, it was her last chance.
Eugene glanced up at Violet’s family, trying to gauge their reaction. Eugene’s father stood up, giving Eugene a curt nod.
“I’ll bring the car around.”
Tumblr media
The drive to the lake was a short one. By the time Eugene had carried Violet out to the car and her mother had carried out her oxygen bottle, her father had brought the car around.
They all bundled in, no one moaning about the tight squeeze or the stuffy air. Violet was sitting on his lap, clinging tightly to the front of his shirt.
“Thank you, Gene, she mumbled, pressing her lips gently to his neck. Eugene had to fight back the tears as he looked down at her, trying to steady his breathing so she didn’t realise he was crying.
When the car pulled up as close to the lake as they could, Violet’s family hurried out of the car, helping carry the oxygen as Eugene carried Violet. They picked a quiet spot, the same spot where Eugene and Violet had their second date.
Violet’s mother lay down a blanket from the back of the car, laying it on the grass so they could sit down. Eugene sat down first so that Violet could sit between his legs, leaning against his chest.
Violet’s mother hovered behind them until her father ushered her away. “Give them some time, Love. She wants to be with Eugene.”
Eugene watched as they walked back to the car, he knew he was hurting but how much pain must they be in losing their eldest daughter?
The sun was hanging low in the sky, just like it had been on their second date. It cast a bright orange glow, like the sky was burning, a lit the flames. The lake itself glowed orange, reflecting the setting sun's rays. It felt as though the whole world was alight.
Eugene grasped Violet’s hands, wrapping them in his own and pulling them close to their chests. He could feel her heartbeat, weak but steady beneath his hands. He could feel her breaths, short and sharp.
“It’s so beautiful,” Violet whispered, her eyes shining brightly in the setting sun and it reminded Eugene of the old Violet before she was sick. The time when they had everything to live for.
“You’re beautiful,” he mumbled into her hair, burying his face and taking a long, deep breath. She didn’t smell like she used to, of roses and lavender. She smelled clinical, like the hospital. It was as if that place had drained the life from her instead of trying to save it. “You’re perfect.”
“But my heart’s not, that’s far from perfect. I’m sorry my heart wasn’t good enough” she mumbled, glancing up at Eugene, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be perfect for you, Eugene.
Eugene but back a sob, “No, no don’t you ever say that. You are perfect, Violet. God, you are so perfect. Your heart was all I could have ever asked for. I love you so much.” He pulled her in tighter so that she was sat in his lap, her head resting against the crook of his neck.
“I wish we could have had longer,” Violet cried, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed, her breath becoming short, small gasps escaping her. Eugene placed the oxygen mask over her mouth, rubbing her back comfortingly as she coughed.
“It’s okay, Vi. It’s alright. We had the time that God decided for us and it was the best time of my life. I love you so much, don’t ever forget that.”
Violet nodded slowly, unable to speak as she breathed as best she could through the oxygen mask. He placed his lips on her forehead, kissing her lightly as he closed his eyes and began to hum quietly. Violet's breathing became slower, shallower as he hummed and she relaxed into him.
Eugene smoothed his hand over her hair, watching as her blue eyes slid closed, small breaths leaving her lips. “It’s okay, Violet. It’s okay to let go, I’ve got you now.” He whispered into her ear, rocking her slowly, “I love you.”
Violet’s body relaxed in his arms, her breathing slowed until it became inaudible, and her heartbeat slowed beneath his hand.
“Thank you, Gene. Thank you for loving me,” she whispered, taking one last deep breath before she fell silent, slipping away from the world. Eugene watched as her body relaxed, her ragged breathing stilled and her heartbeat stopped under his hand. She looked so peaceful, her face no longer lined with worry, but her flesh smooth over her gaunt features. She was finally at peace.
Eugene’s tears flowed freely now, he didn’t want her to see him crying, didn’t want her last memory to be of him in a state, but now he could. He didn’t hold anything back, clutching her lifeless body as if she could anchor him to this world as he fell apart.
“Goodbye Violet,” he sobbed, “I love you.”

December 20th 1941
Eugene bundled some belongings into his kit bag, mainly a few spare pairs of clothes, some smart shoes, and a book for the train journey. His parents were going to drop him off at the station to start his journey to basic training. He’d never managed to tell Violet he’d enlisted on December 12th, it seemed so far away at the time.
His parents were waiting outside as he collected up his last few things, shoving the photo of his family into his book so it wouldn’t become damaged.
The scrapbook Violet gave him for his birthday sat on his bedside table, pride of place. He’d looked through the photos every night since she passed, reading over her words of encouragement. She knew him so well. Each phrase or paragraph made him smile, they got him through each day without her.
As he turned over the final page of the book he noticed a white piece of paper sticking out the edge of the book. He pulled it free, unfolding the paper and revealing a letter written in Violet’s hand. Eugene felt the scrapbook fall from his hands and onto his bed. His eyes trained on the letter.
To My Dearest Eugene,
By the time you read this letter, I will be gone. I wish we could have had more time together, but then all of the time in the world would still not have been enough.
To be loved by you was the greatest treasure of my life. You are a special man Eugene Roe. You filled my life with light and I don’t want you to hide that light from the world. I want you to show the world how wonderful you are Eugene and you have to promise me that you will love again. I know that there is someone else out there for you and I want you to find her. She will be so lucky to have you Gene.
Thank you for everything Eugene, thank you for making me feel special and for loving me despite knowing our ending. I wish you all the luck in the world, my love. I love you with all my heart.
Yours always
Violet
Eugene didn’t find the usual tears slipping down his face but instead, a wide smile spread across his lips. He folded the letter, placing it alongside the picture of himself and Violet, before doing up his kit bag and sliming it over his shoulder. He gave one last glance at his childhood bedroom, unsure of when he would next see it. He walked down the familiar stairs and along the corridor. He looked back at the house he had occupied for the last 20 years, filled with so many memories.
“Thank you, Violet.” He closed the door, following his way down the familiar path and towards the car. He’d soon be in another State on a very different path than he’d imagined but at least he knew that no matter what Violet would be watching over him.

Eugene Roe x Violet Elwood
Summary: Violet was living a quiet life during the summer of 1941 in Morgan City, Louisiana when she meets Eugene Roe when he stumbles into her families shop. But Violet has a devastating secret that she’s keeping and it’s sure to break Eugene’s heart. They can only hope their love endures and it doesn’t die as a summer romance. Masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8th June 1943, Morgan City, Louisiana
Eugene’s shoes tapped rhythmically at the pavement as he hurried after his older sisters, their curls bouncing as they shouted over their shoulders for him to ‘hurry up’. He wasn’t entirely sure what the rush was, a new convenience store opening in town wasn’t necessarily the exciting point of the summer, or it wasn’t to a 19-year-old boy. Eugene often wondered what his life would be like if he’d had older brothers. They would be out, exploring and playing but instead, he’d been taught to sow with his sisters and cook. ‘You never know when you’ll need to fix a hole in your trousers’, his mother had always told him, and in hindsight, it was a useful skill for him to have. His two younger brothers often got out of the simple household chores. ‘You’re the man of the house’ his father often told him when he went off to work and Eugene believed him, but really his older sisters were in charge.
The hot Louisiana summer had only just begun, and yet for June, it was exceptionally warm. His shirt stuck to his back, as sweat travelled down the valley of his spine. His troubles were not helped by the bundle of bags and the basket he carried, while his sisters skipped along the street in front of him. How he’d been volunteered for this he wasn’t sure.
He could see his sister had stopped beside the shop ahead of him, glaring at him as he quickened his pace to catch up.
“I swear Eugene, if you walked any slower you’d be going backwards,” his oldest sister, Minnie, grumbled and Eugene stuck his tongue out at her once she had turned around. Siblings, who would have them?
The bell above the door chimed, announcing their arrival and the girls quickly scattered, leaving Eugene and all the bags in the doorway. Deciding that no one was likely to steal the bags, he stacked them in the corner before making his way down one of the aisles. He had to admit this shop sure did have everything and he picked himself up an apple on the way past the fruit stand, rummaging to find a nice red one.
Knowing his sisters were likely to spend the next hour investigating the new shop, Eugene headed towards the empty counter to pay. There was no one in sight since he’d entered the shop so he chimed the bell on the countertop, waiting for the owner to reveal themselves. A flash of blonde hair shot past him and dashed behind the counter with a gleaming smile. Her lips were moving in slow motion and Eugene blinked expressionlessly.
He’d never seen someone so beautiful, her blonde locks in perfect curls, framing her pale face, her blue eyes sparkling in the dim shop lightening.
“Excuse me? Can I help you?” She asked again and Eugene stuttered, stumbling over his words as he apologised, asked the girl her name and all but threw his money at her.
Her eyes widened a little as she began to collect the money, picking up several of the coins and passing them back to him.
“Are you okay?” Her eyebrows creased as she questioned him and if Eugene hadn’t been frozen to the spot he might have run out of the store there and then.
“Y-yes…” he wheezed, seemingly unable to breathe at that precise moment. His cheeks grew redder by the minute as he continued to stare at her.
“Okay then,” the girl turned, putting the money into the cashier, “Well, as you asked so nicely,” she laughed and Eugene felt his throat tighten as the jovial tune left her mouth. “My name is Violet, and you are?”
“Eugene, Eugene Roe ma’am and I think you're so beautiful, would you like to go out… sometime… with me… Eugene Roe.” If he could have one wish, he’d have wished for the ground to swallow him up. It’s not that he’d ever been terribly confident with women anyway, but this was just embarrassing.
“Well, Eugene, Eugene Roe,” she grinned, copying how he’d stumbled over his words. “It’s nothing personal but I don’t go out with strangers and I don’t know you.”
Eugene’s forehead creased, “Well how ‘bout ya go out with me and we getta know each other, then we won’t be strangers,” Eugene tried to reason.
Violet tilted her head, “Well, you’ve got me there Eugene, Eugene Roe.”
Before she could say anything else, Eugene’s sisters came around the corner, with bundles of supplies in their arms. He wasn’t sure if they needed all this stuff, they were exactly the richest family but his sisters seemed to be stocking up for hibernation.
“Stop harassing the poor girl, Eugene,” Winnie groaned and Minnie just rolled her eyes. “Go grab the bags, Gene.”
Eugene did as he was told, giving Violet a brief wave before disappearing from view. Violet smiled, watching him go. He was an odd character but he seemed nice enough.
The two girls began bickering as they bundled their goods into two very small bags and Violet took this as her opportunity to escape from behind the counter.
She found Eugene standing outside the shop, his eyes closed and his face turned towards the sky, taking in the late afternoon rays.
“Well, Eugene, Eugene Roe. You don’t seem like a bad guy and I don’t think you’re gonna murder me, so why don’t you pick me up on Saturday at 7?”
Violet was suddenly worried that Eugene was having some kind of heart attack from the way his face paled and she stepped forward before he began nodding animatedly.
“Yes, yes that will do nicely. Yes. Thank you.” Why couldn’t he learn to shut up? Eugene cursed himself mentally. “And Gene is fine.” He corrected Violet and she laughed lightly.
“Sure thing, Gene. I’ll see you Saturday.” She waved him goodbye before disappearing back inside, the clang of the bell tolling and announcing his sister's departure from the shop.
“What was all that ‘bout?” Minnie quizzed him as they began their walk towards home.
“Oh… nothing. Just gave me the wrong change is all.” His sisters didn’t press the subject and Eugene wouldn’t have told them anyway, but he couldn’t help the excited butterflies building in his stomach. He was going on his first date on Saturday.
Tumblr media
Eugene Roe had to admit that he was a nervous man, he worried about the slightest little thing and often found his stomach in knots, his anxiety eating away at him when he had something important coming up.
Since his first encounter with Violet, he’d been buzzing with nervous energy. His heart pounding any time someone mentioned her family's shop or Saturday. In fact, his mind was constantly awash with images of her, despite having only seen her once.
He’d sit for hours, tracing her face on his knee as he sat watching his sisters squabble over something irrelevant. He’d even managed to change his route to work, just so he could walk past the shop. Unfortunately, he’d managed to bump into every other member of Violet’s family, except Violet herself.
Saturday came around all too quickly but too slowly at the same time, and by quarter past six on Saturday evening Eugene felt as though he was either going to combust and melt. He wasn’t sure which option was worse but the fear of rejection was worse. What would happen if she changed her mind? What was he supposed to do then?
His mother had tried to reassure him the best she could, having heard all about Eugene’s first crush from his rather annoying older sisters. His younger brothers on the other hand decided to tell him how much they disliked girls, which also didn’t help the argument.
“Would you lot just leave him alone!” His mother's voice had bellowed over the cacophony of rambunctious chattering. The kitchen fell into silence, and even Eugene’s father, who sat in his armchair with his pipe hanging from the corner of his mouth, chose to stay silent.
“Eugene, Darling, you look perfect. No, your hair is fine,” his mother ushered his hand away as he tried to smooth his hair down once more. “Now go. Have a lovely time and be sure to have her home by a sensible time.”
Eugene scurried out of the house as fast as he could, ignoring the shouts of his siblings and his father’s ’go get her son’.
The walk to the store wasn’t more than ten minutes from his house but Eugene found himself dragging his feet. ‘She’d said seven not six forty’, he cursed, annoyed that he’d rushed to get ready but his nervous energy carried him forward.
Once outside the store Eugene could feel his gut tightening, if it was squeezed any tighter he thought he was going to vomit, the stomach acid already building in his throat. Before he could chicken out, his knuckles wrapped against the front door. There was some shuffling around inside before a short, bearded man appeared on the other side. He unlocked the door and glared at Eugene.
“We’re closed! Can’t you read the damn sign,” he spoke gruffly, lighting a cigarette as his eyes bore into Eugene’s soul.
Eugene shuffled nervously from foot to foot as he stumbled over his words, “W-well Sir, I- I’m here to… to see Violet.”
The man continued glaring at him, his eyes travelling up and down Eugene’s frame, squinting when their eyes met. Eugene felt as though he was vibrating and his hand shook as he smoothed it over his dark locks nervously, while he tried not to squeeze the bunch of flowers in his other hand.
“Well, I guess you’d betta come in. Vi is upstairs getting ready,” her father all but dragged him through the door, slamming it closed aggressively.
“This way,” he pushed Eugene through the shop and out the door behind the counter which led into a long hallway. It was rather dark but a light room lay at the end which Eugene assumed was the sitting room. “Take a seat.”
Eugene did as he was told, sitting quickly on one of the wooden chairs. Her father sat opposite him, nursing his glass of whiskey with an unnerving smirk. Eugene dug his fingers into the collar of his shirt, trying to reduce the claustrophobic feeling.
They sat in silence until two faces appeared at the top of the stairs, the girls were giggling and despite his best efforts, Eugene blushed furiously under their gaze. They looked a lot like Violet but a little younger, Eugene noted. The girls were whispering to each other and it was more than clear that they were talking about him before they scurried out of view.
The next person to appear at the top of the stairs was Violet, and Eugene’s legs forced his legs to stand. Violet was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her blonde locks were curled, framing her face while her rouged lips spread into a wide smile. The blue dress adorning her figure, hugging her curves flowed around her legs as she descended the stairs.
“Wow,” Eugene whispered, as Violet stepped in front of him. “You’re da most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”
It was Violet's turn to blush, biting her lip nervously as she smiled shyly. “Thank you, Eugene. You don’t scrub up too badly yourself.”
“These are for you,” Eugene pushed the bunch of Violets towards her and she grinned, accepting the flowers and passing them to one of the younger blonde girls.
“Thank you. I see you’ve already met my daddy. This is my mumma,” she pointed to an older blonde lady behind her who greeted Eugene with a small wave. “And these are my sisters, Rose and Lilly.”
Eugene greeted the other girls and the older of the two, Eugene guessed she was Rose, and leant forward. “Vi here hasn’t spoken of anything else since she met you. It’s nice to finally put a face to the name.”
Violet smacked her sister playfully and Eugene found himself blushing once more.
“You two should be headin’ off before it gets too late,” her father said, “It’s gooda meet ya, Eugene. You have her back by ten, okay?”
“Sure thing, Sir,” he took her father's hand and shook it before Violet linked her arm through Eugene’s and pulled him away.
“Sorry ‘bout that,” Violet apologised once they were out of the shop. “They can be a little much sometimes.”
Eugene grinned, “Not at all. They seem real nice folks.”
Violet laughed, “Well, they promised to be on their best behaviour so I’m glad ya think so.”
It was only a short walk through town to the local picture house and they reached the old building by quarter past six. The picture house was built many years before and its red wooden panels were flaking and haggard but inside it was reasonably furnished.
“I thought you could pick which film we watched. I wasn’t sure if you’ve seen any of them yet,” Eugene mumbled shyly as they approached the ticket boot.
Violet smiled, approaching the booth, “Can we have two tickets to see…” she pondered for a moment looking at the film posters above their heads. “They met in Bombay.”
The ticket masters passed over two tickets and Eugene passed him the money. Violet grasped Eugene’s hand, pulling him through the crowd, “Come on, let’s get some good seats.”
Eugene followed Violet up the winding staircase to the studio. Violet paused at the top of the stairs, breathing a little heavily now. “Those are some steep steps,” she laughed and Eugene nodded in agreement, despite having taken the steps two at a time with ease.
They found some seats down the middle aisle and made themselves comfortable.
“What made you choose this film,” Eugene asked curiously as he studied her face in the dim lights. Her rosy cheeks reflected pale in the light and Eugene realised that this is what an angel must look like.
“I don’t know,” she admitted, turning to face him with a smirk on her lips, “I’ve only been to the cinema once so I just picked one at random.” She laughed lightly at Eugene’s amused expression.
The lights soon dimmed further as the screen came to life with black and white images. Eugene’s heart sank as the images of soldiers appeared on the silver screen and news of the war in Europe was projected to the audience. It was inevitable that he’d end up fighting, every able-bodied man of fighting age would. As if she could sense something was wrong, Violet grasped Eugene’s hand and gave it a small squeeze before placing their joined hands on the armrest. Eugene was glad of the dark room because if he blushed any more tonight he’d be in a permeated state of red.
The film rolled by quickly and before Eugene knew it the lights came back up and Violet was grinning at him. He blushed, realising he’d been looking at her again, in fact, he wasn’t sure how much he’d actually seen of the film, too busy studying her features.
“If you take a picture, it will last longer,” Violet jested and Eugene looked down at his shoes, “I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s okay,” Violet assured him, squeezing his hand gently, “I like it when you look at me.”
All too soon they were back outside, strolling arm in arm along the now quiet, cool streets of Morgan City. Eugene’s heart thumped against his ribcage with every step as he tried to keep his thoughts from running wild. Violet could sense his eyes on her and she looked up at him, her blue eyes setting his heart alight.
“I had a wonderful time tonight, Eugene. I can’t thank you enough. I’ve never had an evening like this,” Violet smiled, stopping in her tracks and causing Eugene to stop beside her. She leant forward, pressing her lips softly to his cheek. Eugene couldn’t help but blush again. It was the kind of blushing that shows a person's soul, and complimented his eyes and the delicate sweetness they held within. “Thank you.”
“I think I shou’ be the one thanking you, Violet,” Eugene reached out, brushing a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. “I had an amazing time tonight. Could’a see you again sometime?”
“You certainly can,” Violet agreed, clutching Eugene’s hand once more. “Come on, my Daddy will be expecting me home.” As the pair continued their walk down the street, Eugene felt a sense of great relief filling his soul, his first date had been a success and maybe, just maybe this was the start of something beautiful.

Chapter 4: It’s my Heart
Eugene Roe x Violet Elwood
Summary: Eugene learns the truth of the secret Violet has been keeping, but can he handle what it means. Warnings: medical conditions, talks of death, grief Masterlist
Tumblr media
August 31st 1941
Eugene sat in the room he shared with his younger brothers, glaring out of the window as he watched his family heading to church. His mother had tried to persuade him to go but he just couldn’t stomach being around anyone. Since last Wednesday when he found out about Violet’s condition, it felt as though his heart had stopped and it had yet to start again. He felt cold, like a corpse that wouldn’t die but wasn’t alive either. The days passed by in a blur and dragging at the same time.
Violet’s mother had popped by yesterday to tell him that Violet was now at home but he couldn’t even leave his room. Instead, he watched her speaking to his mother on the front porch before forlornly walking away. He was sure she had noticed him in the bedroom window but he didn’t care, he just wanted to be alone.
His mother brought his dinner up to his room but Eugene left it untouched most nights so his brothers would eat his leftovers, thankful for the extra food. His father had come up a few times and he expected him to talk harshly to him, reprimand him for his lack of respect for the effort his mother had put into making the meal or his antisocial behaviour. His father merely patted him on the back, before leaving him once again with his thoughts.
He wanted to see Violet, of course, he did but he couldn’t bring himself to. It would make everything too real. At least this way if he kept away he could pretend everything was still perfect.

September 6th 1941
The guilt was eating away at Eugene as he walked down the familiar corridor of the Elwood residence. He hadn’t been here for nearly two weeks now, which was the longest he’d stayed away since he first met Violet.
Violet’s mother had let him in, smiling sadly when she saw him standing outside. “Violet is sat out in the garden.”
Eugene wanted to hate her family for keeping the secret from him, they had known all along and they let him fall in love with her. In truth, he couldn’t hate them, he couldn’t hate any of them. He did, however, hate himself for trying to hate them in the first place. How could he hate a family who were just obliging their daughter's wishes? ‘She wanted a normal summer’.
Eugene followed her through to the garden where he could see the three sisters sitting in garden chairs. Violet sat in the middle, her head resting on Rose’s shoulder while she read to her. Lily sat on the opposite side of Violet, her head leaning on her oldest sister's shoulder. Eugene hated to disturb the peaceful moment between the siblings but also felt as though it should be him sitting out there with her. He’d been selfish and hurt and he’d wasted two precious weeks he could have been spending with her.
Violet’s mother appeared behind him, laying a hand on his shoulder. “She missed you terribly, Eugene. She blamed herself for driving you away.”
Eugene shook his head, “It’s my fault, not Violet’s. I’ve been so stupid and I can’t even make it up to her. There’s not enough time.” The tears that he’d been holding back ever since arriving on Elwood's doorstep slipped free down his cheeks now and Violet’s mother pulled him in for a hug.
“Now, now, don’t cry. The main thing is you’re here now. You’re a good man, Eugene and my daughter loves you very much which is why she didn’t tell you she was sick. She didn’t want to hurt you,” Violet’s mother sighed, “We’ve tried to keep her safe for so long but we knew this would come eventually. I’m just glad she met you. She got to experience true love, and I believe what you both have is true love. Thank you for loving my daughter”.
The pair stood in the kitchen for a while, trying to compose themselves, “Now go out there and be with her. She’ll be so pleased to see you.”
Eugene walked slowly down the porch and out across the grass to where the girls were sitting. Rose noticed him first, putting down the book and giving Violet a small nudge. The scene broke his heart. In just those few weeks since he’d last seen her, she’d grown paler, cheeks less round, lips less plump but her blue eyes sparkled brighter than ever.
“Eugene,” she whispered, trying to stand but Rose stopped her, shuffling out from the seat and moving so Eugene could take her place. Lily got up too, following her sister inside and allowing the pair some time alone.
“Vi…”
“Gene…”
They both stopped trying to encourage the other to go first. Eugene decided to speak up.
“Violet, I’m so sorry, for everything. I shoulda been here for you and instead, I was a coward. I was scared to lose you but being away from you killed me. I’m here now and I promise with all my heart I’m not going anywhere.”
“Oh Gene,” Violet pulled her arms up around him, kissing his lips firmly. “I’ve missed you so much.”
Having Violet back in his arms was the best feeling in the world, it was a feeling Eugene wanted to treasure forever.
“How long?” Eugene mumbled, broaching the question that he feared he didn’t want to know the answer to.
“The doctors aren’t too sure. Could be three months, could be longer. I’m a ticking clock Gene, I’m on borrowed time.” Eugene nodded sadly, pulling Violet close to his side and kissing her forehead.
“Well then we’d better make the best of the time we have,” he mumbled into her hairline, kissing her head once more.
Violet nodded, glancing up at Eugene, “Will you read to me? Rose was reading to me but I’d much rather it was you.”
Eugene chuckled, picking up the book on the bench, opening it to the creased page and beginning to read where Rose had left off. Violet snuggled into his side, her head resting against his shoulder and her hand wrapped around his while he read.
Eugene wasn’t sure how many perfect moments like this he had left with Violet, but he promised himself that he would treasure each one.

September 19th 1941
Eugene watched nervously as Violet climbed onto the seat of the Ferris wheel, the whole time his hand remaining firmly on her back. There was a fair in the next town over from them and Violet had mentioned it as soon as she saw it in posters along the main street. Eugene had been reluctant at first, all those people pushing and shoving but Violet had pleaded and he’d easily relented. How could he deny her the chance to ride the Ferris wheel when it might be her only chance?
The fair wasn’t too crowded when they arrived and the couple made a beeline for the Ferris wheel. Violet gripped Eugene’s hand tightly as the attendant placed the bar over their laps and the ride began to move.
“We’ll be able to see the whole town from up here,” Violet chatted excitedly, grinning over at Eugene. He placed his arm around her shoulders, bringing her closer to his side and she snuggled in.
As the ride reached the top it stopped for each person to see the view. Violet began pointing out landmarks, chatting excitedly when they could see their hometown in the distance. Eugene barely glanced at the view, his eyes trained on the beautiful woman beside him. Violet's blonde curls were tucked neatly into a bun at the back of her head but soft curls fell out around her face. ‘A picture of beauty’ he always called her affectionately and she’d always giggle, thanking him for his compliment.
The wheel continued its descent and Violet laughed cheerfully, watching as the ground grew closer to them. Eugene helped Violet climb down from the ride, scooping her into his arms causing her to screech loudly. He laughed when he put her down and she spun around in his arms.
“Where do you want to go next, Love?” He asked, smoothing the hair away from her face.
Violet thought for a moment, her nose wrinkling as she scrunched her face, “Hmm. How about we find some food?”
Eugene nodded, “I think that’s an excellent idea.”
The stand selling cotton candy wasn’t too far from them so they headed straight there, purchasing two large candies and taking a break on the bench close to the stand.
Violet bit into the candy, grinning happily as the sweet taste filled her mouth, “Gene, is so good. You’ve gotta try it.” She motioned for him to take a bit of his own which he obliged, biting into the pink fluff, nodding in agreement. It was good, even if it was a little sweet.
Violet took great amusement when Eugene got some of the candy stuck on his nose, laughing hysterically as he looked at her confused.
“What? Have I got somethin’ on my face?” He wiped his hand over his face multiple times, continuing to miss the candy.
“Here, here, let me get it,” Violet knocked his hands out of the way, reaching over with her handkerchief and wiping it from the tip of his nose. “There, all better. What would you do without me, Eugene Roe?”
That was a question Eugene couldn’t answer because he didn’t know what he’d do without her.

October 17th 1941
“Happy birthday, Gene,” Violet shouted as soon as he opened the door, throwing herself into his arms. Eugene stumbled back at the sudden contact, catching her mid-air and spinning her around.
“Hello Love,” he kissed her sweetly on the lips, enjoying their loving moment before he noticed the lack of people behind her. “Aren’t your family coming with you?”
“They are,” Violet assured him, “But they’re coming later, I wanted you to myself for a while.” She laughed, noticing Eugene’s blush. “Nothing like that Gene, get your head out of the gutter.” She jested, elbowing him in the ribs lightly.
“No, I wanted to give you your present before the others get here.” She passed a large square parcel towards him, it was neatly wrapped in brown paper and tied with string at the top.
“What is it?” He asked, shaking the package curiously.
Violet sighed, “I’m not going to tell you. What’s the point in having a surprise if I tell you before you open it?”
Eugene looked a little confused and Violet sighed again, “Come on,” she grabbed his hand, leading him upstairs to the bedroom he shared with his brothers. She jumped straight onto his bed, making herself at home like she always did.
Eugene fell onto the bed beside her, chuckling as she snuggled into his side.
“Come on, Gene. The suspense is killing me.” He sent her a small glare for joking about death and began to unwrap the parcel, fumbling with the string. As he unwrapped it a large leather scrapbook fell out onto his lap. The initials V and E were embossed onto the front and Eugene felt his heart clench at the picture on the front. It was one of the few pictures they had together. They were sitting by the lake, Violet’s hair blowing softly around her in the wind. Both of their faces were bright, with wide smiles and gleaming eyes. It was from happier times before their lives had changed forever.
Eugene felt a single tear slipping down his cheek but Violet quickly brushed it away, “Look inside,” she whispered, pressing her lips to his neck.
He opened the first page, marvelling at the detail of each one within. Each page had a photo, some of them together, a few of Violet alone and lots of the different places they had been together. Underneath each one Violet had written something. Sometimes a small paragraph, sometimes just a sentence. Eugene smiled, reading a few of them before Violet stopped him.
“I made you this book so that when I’m gone you have something to remind you of me. If you’re ever feeling down you can just read these and I’ll be here with you.”
Eugene shook his head, “Don’t speak like that, Sugar. I don’t want to think about being here without you.” He looked up at her, a small sigh escaping his lips when their eyes met. “I love you, Violet, I love you so much that a…” a silent sob escaped his lips and Violet pulled him straight into her chest, cradling him like a small child as he cried.
Eugene wasn’t sure how long he’d been bottling these emotions but something in him broke and he couldn’t hold back the floodgates. Eugene cried his heart out and Violet held him. She never once told him to stop crying or trying to calm him, she let him feel everything and she embraced him. Violet knew that he needed to grieve just like her family had, except her family had already had a year to grieve her condition.
When Eugene’s sobs finally subsided, Violet pulled him to sit up, cupping his cheeks in her hands. “I love you, Eugene Roe, and I’ll always love you no matter where I am.”

Chapter 3: You’re Breaking My Heart
Eugene Roe x Violet Elwood
Summary: Everything was going so well, until it wasn’t. Things with Violet had been going swimmingly but how much can a person heart really take?
Warnings: implied sex scene, mentions of hospitals

August 12th 1941
Eugene watched as the drinks wobbled precariously on the tray as he moved through the crowd of people and towards the table where Violet and Henry were waiting. They were deep in conversation when Eugene arrived and he managed to catch the end of it before they noticed him.
“Violet, you have to tell Eugene. You can’t keep something like this from him,” Henry asserted, raising an eyebrow when Violet sighed.
“I can’t tell him, and you can’t either. It’s not yours to tell,” Violet snapped, her face quickly morphing into a smile when she noticed him. “Eugene, you’re back.”
“What were you two whispering about?” Eugene asked, placing the drinks on the table and sliding into the booth beside her.
Violet stayed silent for a moment, glancing at Henry before replying, “I was just telling Henry about what surprise I have planned for your birthday.” She leaned over and pecked Eugene’s cheek but he caught her before she pulled away and brought her in for a proper kiss. Eugene had never believed in feeling butterflies from a kiss until he kissed Violet, now every kiss felt as special as their first.
“A surprise? My birthday isn’t until October, you're planning early,” Eugene laughed, but Violet simply nodded.
“It’s good to be prepared,” she nuzzled her head against Eugene’s neck, sighing contently as his arm came around her, pulling her close.

August 27th 1941
Rose greeted Eugene when he appeared at the front door, “Mornin’ Eugene, Violet will be down in a minute. You wanna come in?”
“Sure,” Eugene thanked her, following her down the familiar corridor and into the family kitchen. Violet’s mother was tidying the kitchen and quickly pulled off her apron, hurrying over to him.
“Eugene, hello,” she pulled him into a hug which he quickly returned. He always felt so welcome in the Elwood household, even Violet’s father seemed to like him.
Violet came slowly down the stairs, smiling sweetly at him. “Hello Gene,” she embraced him, kissing his cheek delicately.
“What are you two up to today then?” Her mother asked, packing some sandwiches into a bag and handing them to Violet.
“We're going out to Henry’s family’s boat for the day,” Violet spoke cheerfully, clearly very excited about the prospect of their boat trip.
“Sounds fun,” Violet’s mum gave her a quick kiss. “Well, be safe and have fun.” Eugene followed Violet along the hall when her mother hurried after them. “Violet, don’t forget these.” She handed her something which Violet quickly buried in her pocket, sending Eugene a small smile.
He began to ask what her mother had given her but Violet quickly linked her hand through his, pulling him through the front door. “Come on or we’ll miss the bus.”
Tumblr media
It was a short bus ride to the edge of the city where the Johnsons moored their boat, and the pair arrived shortly before noon. The sun was hanging high in the sky, beating down on the pair as Eugene helped Violet climb onto the small boat. It was merely a rowing boat, nothing grand or special, and yet Violet was so excited to go in it. He couldn’t help but grin back at her and he took up the ores and began to row, her smile was infectious.
As they pushed away from the dock and Eugene began to row further out Violet pointed out things on the land, or the way the water rippled, or how bright the sun was. It was as if she was experiencing all these things for the first time and it reminded him of the day at the lake with Henry. She seemed to intrigued by everything, as if she had yet to experience much of what life had to offer.
When they were out far enough from land, Eugene balanced the ores so they were no longer in the water and they were left to float around in the clear water. Occasionally fish passed underneath the boat, their silver bellies glistening in the afternoon sunshine.
Violet opened up the package of sandwiches, offering Eugene one, which he accepted gratefully, enjoying the taste, if not the rough texture of the bread. She opened a small pot and took a round tablet from it, placing it on her tongue and washing it down with water from the canteen.
“You okay?” Gene asked, watching as her eyes grew wide and she mumbled something, shoving the pot back in her bag.
“I think I have a migraine coming on,” she smiled weakly at him, taking a bite from her sandwich and began chewing quickly.
Eugene nibbled at the edge of his sandwich thoughtfully, sometimes it seemed like he knew Violet better than anyone, other times it felt like he didn’t know her at all.
Violet soon changed the subject, pointing out a colourful fish that splashed at the edge of the boat, weaving between the reeds and disappearing behind a rock. Violet had a childlike manner when it came to pointing out animals that always made Eugene smile, whether it was pointing out a dog walking down the street or a cat sitting on a fence, she always noticed them.
After finishing his sandwich Eugene rowed them further across the lake, before turning the boat and started the paddle back to the shore. The sun grew low in the sky, and a cool breeze began to blow across the lake. Violet began to hum a soft tune and with the setting sun glowing on her Eugene couldn’t help but see the resemblance to an angel, an ethereal being. Eugene often wondered if she was closer to God in some way, through things she said. She was very perceptive and had a way of looking at life like no one he’d ever met before.
Back on the shore, Eugene helped Violet climb from the boat, ensuring it didn’t too as she stepped out and passed her the bag and tied the boat back to its moor. Violet sat on the bank watching him with a smile on her lips.
“What are you looking at?” He chuckled, moving closer to her and pressing his lips firmly to hers. She smiled into the kiss and Eugene knew that he could happily spend the rest of his life kissing her lips.
“Just looking at you,” she replied, a light brush spreading across her cheeks as Eugene began to kiss her once more.
“Oh really,” he mumbled against her lips, cupping her cheek gently and raising her chin so he had better access to her lips.
“I like it when you kiss me, Gene,” Violet mumbled, gripping the front of his shirt, and looking up at him with her large blue eyes. “I really like it when you kiss me.” She looked down in her lap before meeting his gaze once more, “I think I love you, Gene.”
“Well I really like kissin’ you too,” Eugene assured her, pushing her hair away from her face but she just shook her head, causing the blonde strands to fall back. “And I think I love you too.” He couldn’t believe the words left his mouth but he was glad they did. To finally admit how he truly felt for Violet felt like a huge weight lifted but Violet’s face said otherwise.
“No Eugene, I really like kissing you and I’d like to kiss you a whole lot more, and maybe even…” she trailed off and Eugene cocked his head, thinking over her words until he swallowed hard, realising just what she was implying.
“Are you sure?” He whispered, unable to raise his voice any louder. His throat felt tight like someone was crushing his trachea.
“I’m sure, I’m very sure,” she assured him, gripping his collar and pulling him down for another kiss, this one more passionate than any of the kisses they had shared before. Eugene gasped and Violet took the opportunity to push her tongue into his mouth, fighting against his own for dominance which she quickly won. Eugene moved to kneel and Violet pulled him down with her as she lay on the grass.
Before things could go too far Eugene pulled away. “We can’t… not here,” he took her hand in his own, pulling them both to their feet. “There’s an old lake house on the far side of the lake. No one uses it but it’s pretty nice over there. Henry and I spent lots of time there last summer.” He wasn’t sure why he was suggesting the old lake house, he didn’t like to think what his mother would think of him but Violet nodding adamantly at him encouraged him to make the decision.
“Okay.”
Tumblr media
The moonlight streamed through the crack in the wooden boards, casting an eerie, white glow across Eugene’s face as he stirred under the thin covers. His arm felt numb but he was unable to move it due to a heavy weight on it. Turning his head, he was met with the sleeping face of Violet, looking so peaceful under the moonlight. He reached across, smoothing his index finger over her cheek.
He’d never imagined his first time with a girl to be in a boathouse, especially not Violet. He’d imagined a romantic evening but thinking back on their day together he couldn’t think of anything more perfect. Everything was perfect with Violet by his side.
Checking his watch, the time read 09:00 pm. Shit. Despite not wanting to disturb Violet they had to get home soon, her parents liked him up until this point and he didn’t want to do anything to jeopardise that.
“Violet? Vi Sweetheart, we have to get going. Your parents will want you home,” he pushed her gently but she didn’t stir. “Violet?”
Eugene sat up straight, leaning over Violet and shaking her harshly, “Violet!” His voice grew more urgent as his heart began hammering in his chest. When he continued to shake her to no avail he knew his only option was to get help. He pulled his clothes on quickly, scooping Violet up into his arms and hurrying out of the lake house. He was thankful for the road that ran alongside the lake and hurried up onto the tarmac, flagging down a passing car.
“It’s going to be okay, Violet. I’m going to get you help.”
Tumblr media
Eugene had never spent much time in hospitals but from just sitting in the waiting room, he had grown to hate the place. One of the nurses had contacted Violet’s parents who luckily had a phone due to their shop, and they had passed on the message to his parents. The two families sat in utter silence and it was crushing Eugene with more guilt than he already felt.
Violet’s mother had begun crying when she saw him and pulled him straight into a bone-crushing hug to which he broke into a heartbreaking sob. All the emotions of the day finally caught up with him and now it was all too much. She loved him and he loved her. They had consummated their love and now… well now he wasn’t sure what was happening and he didn’t seem to be getting any answers.
As the hours dragged on, different family members got up and walked around, his sisters choosing to get some fresh air outside with Violet's sisters. Eugene couldn’t move from his seat, paralysed by the confusion and growing pain he felt in his chest.
“Mr and Mrs Elwood?” An older doctor in a long white coat appeared, a clipboard tucked under one arm.
“Yes,” Violet’s parents stood quickly, hurrying towards the doctor. He ushered them forward and Eugene stood too.
“What’s wrong with her?” He demanded, tears slipping down his cheeks. Violet’s mother turned to him, nodding to Violet’s father. The couple moved closer to Eugene, beckoning him to take a seat again but he refused.
Violet’s mother took a deep breath, “Eugene there’s something that you need to know… about Violet. It’s going to be hard to understand. She didn’t want to hurt you, that’s why she didn’t tell you.”
Eugene gulped, ignoring the tears that continued to slip down his cheeks, “Tell me what?”

Chapter two: When the heart calls
Eugene Roe x Violet Elwood
Summary: After a successful first date, Eugene is over the moon for their second day and as the months roll by he doesn’t think things could get any more perfect. Masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
June 20th 1941
Eugene groaned, stretching his legs out under the table as he watched the commotion unfold. His sisters had managed to use the family’s ‘points’ up again and so the family were left to wait until next month for some more. Eugene felt partly responsible, he should have been more cautious of what his sisters were using their stamps for but he’d been too preoccupied by Violet's presence to realise.
“You’re lucky the garden is doing well otherwise we’d be living on scraps,” his mother sighed, exasperated and waved his older sister away, who sulked up the stairs.
Turning to Eugene she smiled, “Gene, would you be able to catch a lift with the Johnsons and take those tyres along to be repaired this afternoon?”
“Course Ma,” Eugene smiled, squeezing his mother's hand reassuringly to which she gave him a light smile in return. Eugene admired his mother, she was a strong woman who had to keep the whole family in line.
Making his way outside, Eugene gathered up the two spare tyres that were led on the porch and rolled them around to the front of the house. With everything on rations from gasoline and rubber to sugar and meat the community was turning into a repair and make-do environment. Everyone was pulling together, sharing lifts and establishing ways to make sustainable meals.
Eugene looked down at his watch, he’d have enough time to drop in and see Violet on his way to work if he hurried, although looking down at his ripped work trousers he decided against it. Maybe he could see her in the afternoon.
It had been a week since their first date and Eugene could barely contain his excitement at the prospect of their next date on Saturday. Violet seemed to consume his every waking thought and as he began his long walk home after work he couldn’t help the images of her building in his mind.
“Earth to Gene? Hey Buddy, what’s got you so preoccupied? Did you hear anything I just said?” Eugene’s best friend Henry spoke up, prodding him in the ribs playfully. “You aren’t thinking of your girl again, are ya?”
Eugene blushed furiously, shielding his face with his hand, “No… no I-I’m just…”
“It’s okay, Gene. I know you’ve got it bad for her. Hey, when do I get to meet your future wife?” It was Henry’s turn to shy away now as Eugene jabbed his finger into the other man’s ribs.
“Will ya give it a rest? We’ve only had one date.”
Henry just grinned, “One date and you’re already besotted with her, whatever next.”
The pair continued their walk towards the Roe residence, Henry was going to catch a ride home with his family when they came to give Gene a lift to drop off the tyres later that afternoon.
The sun was hanging low in the sky, throwing its golden rays over Morgan City as the two boys followed their way to Eugene’s house. Eugene felt his heartbeat quicken when a familiar blonde figure appeared outside the front of her parent's store, her yellow dress flowing around her legs as she moved.
Violet must have noticed Eugene too because she raised her hand, waving at him.
“Who’s that?” Henry asked, glancing at Eugene to see if he had any recollection of who this person was.
“That’s Violet,” Eugene couldn’t contain the smile that spread across his lips, his footsteps quickening against the tarmac.
“Well, I wasn’t expectin’ to see ya today but it’s certainly a pleasant surprise,” she grinned, giving Eugene a sweet hug that had him blushing furiously. She smiled kindly at Henry who introduced himself. Eugene could barely concentrate on what his friend was saying, too consumed as he watched the wide grin spread across Violet’s lips, her blonde curls bouncing around her as she moved.
“Hey Gene, ya gonna stop staring at the poor girl. I know you’re besotted but…” Eugene snapped out of his daze, blushing as he ducked his head low, avoiding Violet’s eye and mentally cursing Henry for his big mouth.
Violet stepped from foot to foot before leaning forward, pressing a little kiss to Eugene’s cheek before whispering, “I don’t mind you staring.”
Eugene didn’t think he could blush anymore but his face burned like the hot summer sun under her gaze.
“We should be headin’ back. Was nice meetin’ ya Violet,” Henry chimed in, pushing a rather red Eugene away, and waving at Violet who just giggled, shaking her head fondly at Eugene’s awkwardness.
“When can I see you again?” Violet called out, causing Eugene to turn around, thinking quickly.
“Umm… well… I-I’m free tomorrow… all day,” stumbling over his words, his mind racing at the endless possibilities of what they could do.
“Well, I’ll see ya tomorrow then. I’ll bring some lunch,” Violet waved them goodbye and Henry threw his arm around his shoulder, chuckling as Eugene's cheeks flushed even more.
“Oh ya poor boy Gene, you are done for,” he chuckled. “So, what do ya have planned for ya second date?”
“I have no idea,” Eugen moaned, burying his head in his hands. He felt even more nervous than he did for their first date.
“Ya better get thinkin’ then, Gene.” Yes, he’d better.

Wrapping his knuckles against Elwood’s front door, Eugene took a deep breath, calming the nerves that had been building in his stomach since he bumped into Violet the previous afternoon. Violet threw open the door, her bright smile greeting him as she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
“Good morning Eugene. Here, could you take this for me?” She thrust the picnic hamper into his hand, before she turned, shouting goodbye to her family before closing the door behind her. She quickly linked her arm with his, pulling him away from the house.
“Shouldn’t I say good mornin’ to ya family?” Eugene asked awkwardly, glancing back at the house but Violet just laughed.
“Do ya really wanna be interrogated again?” She grinned at him, “Come on, let’s go. Where’d ya wanna go?”
“Well, I did have one place in mind.”

The lake had always been a special place to Gene. It was secluded away from the town, surrounded by trees and lay in a sun trap where the warm summer sun shone down, warming the water to a comfortable temperature. Violet laid out the picnic blanket by the edge of the lake, sitting neatly in the blanket while Eugene began laying out the few sandwiches, some fruit and lemonade, pouring them both a glass.
“It’s homemade, I hope ya like it,” Violet commented, watching as Eugene took a long swig, smiling as the sweet drink filled his mouth.
“It’s delicious,” Eugene reassured her, grinning at her pleased expression. The way her cheeks creased when she smiled always made Gene’s heart flutter.
“So Eugene, what’s your family like?” Violet asked, biting into her sandwich and giggling awkwardly as the filling smudged at the corner of her mouth.
“Hey, you’ve gotta little somethin’,” Eugene reached over, wiping his napkin over the corner of her mouth. “There we go.”
Violet blushed, “Thank you.” Eugene smiled fondly at her, taking a bite from his sandwich as he pondered his answer.
“Well, I’ve got my Ma, she’s a good lady, she’s gotta look after my Pa and me and my siblings. She’s a kind woman and my Pa is a good man. I got my two sisters who ya met the other day. They can be a little much sometimes but they’re my family all the same. Then there’s my two little brothers, I gotta try and keep them outta trouble.”
Violet nodded, “Don’t get me started on siblings, my sisters drive me crazy sometimes but jeez you gotta love ‘em.”
Eugene nodded, “I couldn’t agree more.”
The afternoon rolled by quickly and the conversation flowed effortlessly. All too soon the sun began setting over the lake, golden rays dancing across the landscape. The orange hues caused Violet’s blonde locks to turn a golden colour and with the evening light glowing over her pale features, in Eugene’s eyes she resembled an angel.
Violet glanced over at him, catching his gaze and grinning when she noticed the blush forming on his handsome features. Eugene moved his eyes over the lake, ignoring the shuffling beside him until Violet’s head fell into his lap, her hair spilling across his lap as she gazed up at him, her blue orbs sparkling as she spoke.
“I had a nice day today, Gene,” she admitted, reaching up and brushing her fingers softly over his cheek. Eugene smiled softly, repeating her action and carding his fingers through her hair.
“I had a real good day too,” Eugene replied, looking back out across the lake, mesmerised by the ripples dancing over the surface as he stroked Violet’s hair. She hummed contently, snuggling further into Eugene so she too could look out over the beautiful landscape.
Eugene didn’t think he could feel any happier than he did at this very moment. Somehow he’d only met her a few times and he already never wanted to spend a day apart from her.
“Eugene?” Violet asked, looking up at him with a soft smile on her lips. Eugene nodded, waiting patiently for her response.
“You can kiss me… if you’d like to,” Violet bit her lip anxiously, cautiously sitting up from Eugene’s lap.
Eugene froze, swallowing hard as he tried to control the rush of emotions that flooded him and she watched him worriedly.
“You don’t have to…” Violet was cut off as Eugene pressed his lips against hers, moulding easily together as they moved in sync. Violet’s fingers wove into his hair, while his own hands came to rest upon her hips. The kiss was beautiful, passionate and romantic and caused Eugene’s heart to pound in his chest.
When they pulled away both of them were breathless and Violet placed her hand on her chest, feeling her heart beating frantically, as she tried to calm herself, taking deep breaths.
Eugene reached over, brushing her curls away from her face with a small smile, “You’re so beautiful.”
“Thank you,” Violet blushed, reaching over to place a small kiss on Eugene’s cheek. “I should probably get home. It’s gettin’ late and my Pa will start to worry.”
“Course,” Eugene jumped up, helping Violet stand beside him as they gathered up the picnic blanket and he tucked the hamper under his arm, while Violet held his other arm. Violet began humming a sweet tune as they walked back to town and Eugene found himself wondering how many perfect days like this they could have over the whole summer.

On quiet evenings like this one, Eugene would normally be sitting on the porch with his family, either reading, playing cards, or listening to his sisters gossiping about something they had heard. Eugene never expected to be sitting watching his girlfriend sewing with his mother while laughing at his father's jokes. Yet here she was. They had been stepping out for a month now and Eugene couldn’t remember a time when his life felt as perfect as it did when he was with Violet. He saw her nearly every day, and even if it was for only the briefest moment, she brought a smile to his face.
Eugene spent most of his free time on weekends when he wasn’t working or helping his family with Violet. He’d been to dinner at Violet's house and she could often be found at the Roe residence even when Gene wasn’t home. His mother had grown very fond of her. Even now Eugene watched his mother laughing joyfully at something Violet had said. His heart swelled with pride when he saw her with his family, she was like the missing piece that hadn’t realised they needed.
As the evening drew to a close Eugene offered to walk Violet home, enjoying the peaceful evening and some time alone. Arm in arm, Eugene couldn’t help the way his heart skipped a beat every time she spoke, pointing out the colour the setting sun had caused the sky to turn, or the way she smiled at him.
“You’re so beautiful,” he mumbled under his breath, just loud enough for Violet to hear him. She grinned, leaning up to press her lips to his cheek.
“Thank you,” she whispered back, leaning her head against his neck as they continued their walk towards Violet’s house. The hill was steep and while Eugene was taking it in long strides, Violet began to lag behind.
“Hey, G-Gene, wait up,” she panted, catching up with Eugene slowly.
“Are you alright?” He asked worriedly, his hand clasping hers quickly and he pulled her in to lean on him.
“Y-yeah, just a steep hill,” she defended but Eugene couldn’t help the niggling feeling that it was more than that. He lay the back of his palm against her forehead but she shrugged him away, placing her hand against her chest with a wince.
“Violet, are you sure you’re okay?” Eugene’s worry-stricken face watched her as she recovered, her breathing returning to normal until she could smile at him.
“Eugene, I’m fine. I promise the hill is just steep,” she still looked a little pale, her skin clammy but she was smiling now. Maybe it was just a steep hill.
Linking her hand with his, Violet began to lead the way up the remainder of the hill, dragging Eugene along after her, while he continued to overthink the situation.
The remainder of the walk went by in awkward silence, Eugene’s mind preoccupied with worry, while he chewed his lip thoughtfully.
“Eugene, please don’t worry. I’m fine, okay. I promise,” Violet stopped him in his tracks, pulling him around to face her.
Eugene smiled weakly at her, brushing her blonde curls behind her ear, “M’kay, as long as you’re sure.”
“I’m very sure,” she grinned at him, “Come along.” Eugene obediently followed, jogging behind her until he was close enough to wrap his arm around her shoulder.
“I really like your family,” Violet looked up at him, “I think your Ma likes me too.” Eugene chuckled, nodding in agreement, before planting a kiss on her hairline.
“She sure does.”

“Come on Gene, Violet. Hurry up!” Henry called out, already stripped down to his boxers and dancing around on the edge of the bank, hollering loudly.
Eugene laughed, watching as Violet hurried up the small hill to join him.
They had been to church in the morning, before having a joint dinner with Eugene and Violet’s family, and of course, Henry was invited to. His mother and Violet’s mother clicked instantly, falling into conversation like old friends, while Gene’s sisters quickly began gossiping with Violet’s sisters. Their fathers had sat out on the porch after lunch, a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other, reminiscing on the old days. Eugene’s brothers had been causing havoc and Henry was playing with them in the garden until it was time for Violet’s family to go home.
They had been planning a trip to the lake for a while and so after lunch, the three friends packed up some towels and made their way over there. While Eugene and Violet had already visited the lake for a picnic on the southern side of the lake, the north side of the lake had a rope swing that Eugene and Henry had erected last summer.
When Eugene got to the top of the small hill that lay next to the lake, he dropped the towels down in a pile, laying one out so they could sit down should they wish to. He pulled his shirt over his head, folding it neatly and leaving it in a pile beside his shoes, socks and trousers.
Eugene turned to catch Violet folding her dress neatly at the other end of the towel and blushed furiously when he noticed she was just dressed in her swimsuit. Eugene wasn’t sure what he expected considering they planned to go swimming, and the suit was very modest, all in one with short-style bottoms. It was a baby blue colour and it matched Violet’s eyes. Lowering his eyes to avoid her gaze he blushed furiously, seemingly unable to even look her in the eye.
Luckily Henry got the message and with a great cry threw himself onto the rope swing and out across the lake where he landed with an almighty splash.
“Come on you too, the waters real warm.”
Violet giggled, making her way over to the swing. “Here, let me help you.” Eugene held it steady so that she could sit on the wooden plank used as a seat. “Are you ready?”
Violet pulled her bottom lip between her teeth, looking at him thoughtfully before leaning forward and placing a quick kiss on his cheek.
“I’m ready.”
Eugene felt hot as his face and neck flushed and he released the swing, watching nervously as Violet flew through the air, jumping off into the water with an excited scream. When she came to the surface she was shouting joyfully for him to join them. Well, that was all it took and soon all three of them were splashing around in the clear blue pool, swimming, throwing water at each other and floating around until the sun began to set behind the trees, casting an amber glow across the lake.
Henry left shortly after the sun began setting, wanting to get home before it was dark, but Violet and Eugene stayed a little longer. They climbed up the bank, Eugene helping her as she struggled a little with the steep incline. He’d noticed that she’d struggled a little with the swimming too, quickly becoming out of breath but not letting it stop her having fun.
“You alright?” He asked, draping one of the towels around her shoulders and pulling her flush to him, rubbing the fabric up and down her arms to help dry her off.
“Yes I’m fine, thank you,” she smiled sweetly at him, “I had a great time. We should definitely do this again soon.” Eugene nodded happily, pleased that she’d had as much fun as he had.
Eugene held another towel up to shield her from view, averting his gaze across the lake while Violet dried off and changed out of her wet swimsuit and back into her dress. Violet seemed oblivious to him even being there, stripping off quickly and Eugene couldn’t help the way his eyes moved to catch a glimpse of her, berating himself as soon as he did. ‘She trusted him, don’t do something stupid to break that trust.’
Despite only a glance the image of her stayed in his mind as he quickly undressed himself, changing back into his clothes before falling on the dry towel beside Violet. The way her blonde curls had fallen down her bare back, or the way her round breasts peaked out when she raised her arms to put her dress on. He blushed deeply just at the thought. What Eugene didn’t know was that Violet too had caught a glimpse of him changing and she too couldn’t get the image of him from her mind.
Violet moved to lean against him, her head flat in his lap so he could smooth his fingers through her hair. She clutched his other hand, grasping it between hers and bringing it to her lips before moving the clasped hands to her chest, holding them just above her heart. Eugene could feel the rhythmic beating beneath his fingers, her heart rate galloping before slowing and then galloping again. He wasn’t sure if that was normal but had never noticed that pattern of his own, but Violet seemed settled, lying quietly in his lap and so he chose to ignore it. Life couldn’t get any better than this.
