I've been following you for years, but I still don't have any idea what Fallen Hero is about. I think it's a superhero game??

Despite that, I'm pretty sure I had a dream about what I THINK FH may be about. Sidestep was the literal sidekick of the protagonist.

It's ok. It's an Interactive Fiction style game (like a choose your own adventure, it's at least 90% "just a book") and I played the first one back in 2019 after I saw sbeep make some neat fanart for it and I was going through a bad insomnia patch, but I didn't really become fixated on it until the second one came out in February this year and I escaped my Dragon Age fixation. So I honestly don't think I ever talked about it this much before, but I feel like I want to share a lot of the fanart just because that's what got me into it.

It is superhero genre, the player character is a supervillain who used to be a hero but switched sides after a traumatic event. Your character has their own name and villain name, but because their previous hero name was always 'Sidestep' the fandom calls them that instead of 'mc'.

It's funny you had that dream just because Sidestep very much was the sidekick to the other Most Important Character (Charge/Ortega) as a superhero so your brain is just making you dream canon events. 😁

Okey, here's the fh*r rant from hrs ago. I let it marinate for better taste ;)c

FH*R was really cool concept really, take one of the genre with more power fantasies and then taking it away, was really GOOD.

Having the heroes being minorities and disabled? Chef kiss, really.

But I'm mostly going to scream about Ortega, I'm gonna use he/him pronouns for him since I played with Ricardo:

The thing is Ortega was amazing. He was changing on both with puppet and sidestep and good god, I felt like he had more dept to give in the later books but everything came apart. (I think there's people more articulated than me, to explain the full extent)

Look, as a Hispanic man, the fandom rubbed me in a lot of wrong ways, mostly the way Ricardo was treated, he became the clearly depressed old friend trying to help the protagonist to the broad tanned (depending on the artist 🙄) chest for some OCS to cry on (best case scenario). But after a lot of things coming the last months about the author associations, everything kind of clicked: Ortega was never for me, nor you, hispanic. It was for the pleasure of white fetishists, that wanted the Hispanic dream partner.

Other thing, at first I was excited to have an exploration of family machismo's on Ortega's family because, well, that's a real thing but I no longer wanna see. What's is a person in Sweden going to talk to me about hispanic family machismo's? 🙄 I wouldnt had a problem before, because we could always try to correct a thing of two, but know the type of people they run with? Nu-uh.

hey, uh... i have no idea how else to say this, so just be a bit careful within the FH fandom b/c there have been some Very Unfortunate Moments. (not trying to warn you away or anything though! i just rly recommend to take care which content creators you follow)

oh i’m very much aware of what went down with FH a few months back and how fucking gross and creepy and racist some of the fans are. but thank you for the warning, and i’ll publish this in case anyone was unaware: some people who were (are?) very popular and influential in FH outed themselves as racist shitheads when the BLM protests started in early june (and once they were under scrutiny, were also outed as incest/pedophilia shippers and creepy fujoshi-types)

i love fallen hero, it’s one of the most complex and well-written IFs i’ve ever played and i will always simp for ricardo ortega but yeah, be extremely fastidious with vetting who you interact with.

Did you end up playing the game?

If you haven’t, I gotta be honest, the first book (FH: Rebirth) was a bit so-so for me. I was super confused at first and couldn’t really “click” with my protagonist/MC’s motivation for becoming a villain. And even at the end, I felt like there were a lot of gaps and unanswered questions.

But it was worth it after playing the alpha for FH: Retribution (which is online albeit incomplete). Now, I really got sucked into the whole story. I can understand why the first book was Like That since it’s supposed to be a set up for a trilogy. But if you’re a bit impatient, you might not feel the same.

The relationships in Book 1 is mostly just focused on the two (gender customizeable) ROs - Ortega and Dr. Mortum. Then Book 2 adds more options - Herald, Lady Argent, and Marshal Steel/Chen (for M!MC).

They’re all great though you’ll find that Ortega is the fandom darling. My personal fave is Herald.

I stayed off tumblr for a month, I come back, and the fandom exponentiated wut...Also, that Ortega test scene was hella amazing and what a great way to be welcomed back into tumblr. (Side note, if there was a pronoun error / coding error at a certain section of the scene or any scene in FH alpha for that matter, should we send you it through the ask box with a quote or message you the picture?)

Either works fine for error reporting! Though don’t bother with spelling and grammar yet, the alpha’s gonna be smoothed up to a beta and before that happens there’s no use fixing the language.

And I have NO idea what’s been happening lately, I think people have been making too much cool art and dragging more people in so... yeah. I am very happy. The discord alone is nuts.
