So, which period dress are we talking about?
Reading ASoIaF I have troubled figuring out which historical period the fashion is inspired by (ignore the TV series, I hate the costuming in it). Like, from a practical stand-point with winter coming, it should be the beginning of the Little Ice Age (circa 1500s when it should begin to dictate fashion), because the fashion needs to deal with the weather.
That means Late Medieval/Renaissance/Elizabethan era which covers so many different fashions that it isn’t really that helpful (but most of them includes stays and stomachers, neither which I’ve seen in the books). But then we have the War of the Roses (1300s) inspiration, and, just...
We have the nebulous terms of “dress” and “gown” used interchangeably (what do they mean? Kirtle? Houppelande? Cotehardie? Cotte? Surcote? Gown [actually a jacket-like garment]+stomacher+petticoat? Gown [jacket]+stomacher+petticoat+farthingale? Which silhouettes do they wear? The wide-skirted Elizabethan silhouette or the more natural hips depicted of Arthurian legends in pre-Raphaelite art? Do they wear stays? We know they wear shifts, but if they wear stays too, like Elizabethan women, how the eff is Sansa’s barely grown boobs being noticed in clothing that is designed to flatten, contain and cover them?), but nothing very concrete.
Like, what kind of fabrics, patterns, and motifs in embroidering are popular in Westeros? Are the stockings clocked? Et cetera...
Like, I’m supposed to take the whole “Winter Is Coming” and “Iron Throne In Debt” thing seriously when I don’t even know how the characters are clothed? That’s a pretty big part in both those plots and always present whenever there are living, human bodies in the scene, just saying...
Oh, and aside from the ladies, what period of knightly armor are we talking about, because fashion was as important on battlefields as in ballrooms and depending on which period, the armor will be optimized against different kinds of weaponry...
Speaking of which, which period of weaponry are we talking about?
Oh, and is Cersei’s face being eaten alive by the ceruse? Do any ladies have eyebrows? Or do they like giant, pale foreheads and pick them and the hairline?
Do painted lips mean loose morals? Is the Faith of the Seven cracking down on scarlet smackers? Or is it the Old Gods who don’t approve?
What does it mean to wear a black outfit to a wedding? Or a red one? Or white?
What does it mean for a girl-woman to wear pastels vs vibrant vs dark colours?
And what about the jewelry? Those can pack some pretty hefty political statements as well as statements about the wearer’s character? (Imagine Rhaella wearing jewels the Targaryens took from the other kingdoms after the conquest when the lords paramount and wardens come to swear fealty to the newly crowned Aerys... Not such a wilting blossom, then? A true, Targaryen, patriot! Or she wears gold from the Westerlands because Tywin is the real ruler in silent defiance against Aerys...) And what kind of fashion did it follow? Big and chunky to show how much (precious gems and metals) they could afford? Or small and delicate to show off the skilled craftsmen they could afford to hire? Or any combination thereof? What are popular shapes and motifs? And so on and so on...
Erm... You get the idea?

I am very keen and excited to hear what you have to say about “making of the wedding ring” scene in D&D
I’ve been meaning to write about Regency Era weddings since we knew this book was going to be about MC’s wedding. So uh… here we gooooo….
The Regency era itself was a paring back of the super ornate and detailed jewelry and garments of the earlier Georgian era (despite the fact that the former is contained within the latter era). The Regency calls up notions and images of simpler fabrics, less complicated (but no less beautiful) gowns, the (still continued) example of male fashion in the three piece suit, and also less jewelry. The focus was on natural beauty– the eyes, hair, and skin of the individual– as having clear and radiant skin and shining hair could be indicators of health (due to having good wealth, or perhaps just really good genetics).
Elaborate jewelry was a thing of the past and ladies might wear a thin string of pearls or a small gold cross on a chain day-to-day. Earrings were rarely worn and, if they were chosen, they were small, simple, and delicate, like a solitary gemstone or pearl at each ear. Suffice to say, what we know about necklaces and earrings of the time also carried over to rings.
Tumblr media
Does one of these Regency era rings look familiar?
Gold, naturally, was popular. As was (millennial scream) rose gold. Rose gold was a blend of copper and gold, the copper giving the metal a rosy color. 22 karat and 18 karat gold were the most popular metals of the time. But for those without the wallet to pay for it, Pinchbeck (a brass consisting of zinc and copper) was a very passable imitation for gold. In Germany, due to the popularity of donating your gold to strengthen the military, cast iron jewelry became popular and a symbol of patriotism in the country.
Gemstones, like flowers, had special meanings that were strictly adhered to during the era. Garnets and topaz were particularly popular due to their meanings. Garnets symbolized faithfulness and dependability. Topaz was valued because it indicated love and affection. Jane Austen wore a topaz cross on a necklace. Sapphires (what is in our MC’s ring) were used but they hardly were given as tokens of love because their meaning was one of strength, power, and faith. Diamonds were highly coveted for their perceived purity. The easiest and most popular way to set a stone in the Regency was mounting them. Unfortunately for all these stunning sparkling gemstones, mounting hides the entire underside of a stone and doesn’t allow for light to pass through. You can compare this to modern day bezel vs prong settings and how the same or similar stones will look quite different in them.
Tumblr media
A stone in a prong setting, with more light passing through it, has more life to it. In the Regency era, mountings were even more extreme than a bezel setting. Jewelers would place aluminum or another pale lustrous metal behind the stone to help it reflect light better. Also, due to the difference and setting but still the desire for brilliant, glittering stones, gemcutters of the era would use other shapes to pull more light into the stone and bounce it around. The most popular cut of the time was the rose, followed by the old mine cut, which was much more complex and very difficult to find now.

So now that we have a bit about the jewelry of the era and what it generally looked like, what was wedding themed jewelry like at the time? Did women wear a ring? Men? Were engagement rings a thing? *deep breath*
Yes and no. To all of those questions.
The use of engagement rings was not yet widely in practice. If a groom could afford it, he may gift a ring to his future wife as a symbol of his love but it wasn’t an indicator of anything. Often, these rings were the very popular and stylish posey ring and for an example of a posey ring you need not look any further than MC’s mother’s ring. Posey rings would feature an engraving on the inside indicating the purpose for which it was given. This “engagement gift” ring was worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, just like today. A man might, like Edward in Sense and Sensibility, wear a ring made from his fiancee’s hair. (More on hair rings below.)
As for a wedding ring however, if they were used by the couple, their designs focused on nature, much like the emphasis on natural beauty during the time. The stone placement and engraving would conjure up images of butterflies, flowers, acorns, and birds. All of this jewelry had to be handcrafted and so each piece created was truly on of a kind. Not much authentic and verified jewelry of the time remains, mostly because when one’s ring or necklace or whatever else fell out of style you would take it to a jeweler and have something more fashionable made.
Rings were compulsory in a Church of England wedding and so a wedding ring would be required for both parties in Desire and Decorum. They could be made of any metal and of any size.
Some of the more interesting jewelry of the era consisted around the preservation of loved ones lost (or just far away). Mourning rings were popular, as were hair, locket, and miniature rings. Mourning/hair/locket rings would have a space to keep a lock of a loved one’s hair, sometimes intricately woven. Miniature rings could have a loved ones entire portrait in them or, slightly creepily, just an eye of theirs. This was called the lover’s eye.
Tumblr media
Mountings for miniature, lover’s eye, and mourning rings.
And there you have it. Everything I know about Regency jewelry. I hope you all enjoyed it.

what-does-the-cross-bar-necklace-mean
A gold bar necklace, also known as a cross bar necklace– these necklaces are perfect because you can attach whatever meaning you want to them. The meaning behind my gold bar necklace is simple – I can carry my son close to my heart, whenever and wherever I want. There are not too many popular fashion or jewelry items that are all unique, while still having the same in vogue look. These necklaces achieve that perfectly.I’ve been wanting one of these necklaces for quite some time. Not only is this necklace absolutely beautiful, but it means so much to me since it has my baby’s name on it. No matter where I am, I always have him close to my heart.PERSONALIZE YOUR GOLD BAR NECKLACE TO MAKE IT SPECIAL TO YOU Put your kids’ name on it, or the name of a loved one. You can even have an inspiration word engraved on yours to help keep you motivated and to remind you of what’s important to you. That’s the beauty of these necklaces- everyone’s has a special meaning to them. The meaning behind a gold bar necklace is in the eye of the person wearing it.What Does Cross Necklace Mean?(Does it Protect You?) Cross jewelry is a little controversial, and though it would easily be one of the trendiest jewelry designs, not everyone is for the idea of wearing cross jewelry.Of course, everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and you may support cross jewelry or not, but not before you actually understand what cross jewelry means. So, in this article, let’s look at cross necklaces and what they mean.Cross necklace meaning For Christians, the cross symbolizes Jesus Christ’s Suffering and his Resurrect. Historically, however, people would wear the cross because it was believed that the cross offered protection against evil spirits – this belief stands to date, and the cross is still worn to symbolize security and one’s faith. That said, it’s important to note that the appearance of the cross differs depending on the wearer’s denomination. There should be qualms, however, regarding mix and match options for the cross or even the design preferences.📷 What Does Cross Necklace MeanIt, therefore, means that there is more than one type of cross, and these crosses carry different meanings. These include:The Papal Cross – as the name suggests, this is the cross that is designed just for the Pope. This cross features 3 horizontal bars placed towards the top of the vertical bar, with the bottom horizontal bar being the longest while the top bar is the shortest. Pectoral Cross – This cross is designed uniquely for the Bishops. It measures about 6 inches wide, and it’s meant to sit right in the middle of the chest and not near or on the collarbone. Roman Catholic or Latin Cross – This is the other religious cross. It is a simple cross, but its vertical bar tends to be longer than the horizontal bar. This cross design is rather common, and you may have seen this ring design in the world of jewelry. What Does Cross Necklace MeanCeltic Cross – The Celtic cross has horizontal and vertical bars, but in addition to these bars, there’s also a ring at the intersection of the bars. Interestingly, the origins of the Celtic cross remain unclear, with one of the older accounts noting that this cross was associated with specific regions that were evangelized by the Irish Missionaries between the 9th and the 12th Centuries. It is also believed to date back to the 19th Century Celtic Revival. Russian Orthodox Cross – This cross features 2 extra horizontal beams, with the shortest of these bars (the first) said to represent the sign of the cross; the middle represents where the hands of Jesus were nailed on the cross, while the lower bar at the bottom of the vertical bar is said to symbolize the footrest. Crucifix – this is the kind of cross that depicts Jesus’ image on the cross, and it’s a standard depiction across most of the Christian denominations. Other crosses include the Greek Cross, the Armenian Cross, Canterbury Cross(associated with the Anglican church), Gnostic Crosses, the Jerusalem Cross, Inverted Cross (St. Peter’s Cross), Cross of Constantine, Scientology
Cross, Forked Cross, Tau Cross, and finally, the Greek Orthodox cross. It’s interesting to note that regardless of the type of cross necklace an individual chooses to wear, the cross necklaces symbolize the wearer’s faith. It is a physical representation of their beliefs; it enhances their awareness, and in most cases, offers a great sense of comfort to the wearer. That said, the cross necklaces are not a new thing or rather, they are not just associated with the Christian religions since the cross symbols on jewelry is a tradition that dates as far back as the oldest civilizations like the Ancient Egyptians – they also wore them as part of their belief system or as worship and celebration of a god. It wasn’t until the Romans popularize the cross as the Christian symbol when they were converted into an entirely Christian empire, something that ended the persecution of Christians and the religion. Today, Christians wear cross necklaces as a celebration and declaration of their faith. And in most cases, the cross necklace is gifted during religious celebrations like first communions, baptisms, Easter, and Christmas. They also represent re-dedication to the faith for individuals who are already seasoned in their faith or perhaps persons going through a hard time trying to keep their faith. 📷 What does a sideways cross mean? This cross design dates back to the Ancient Egyptians thanks to their looped cross called the Ankh. For them, the cross represented fertility and life. There has been widespread use of this cross that looks like a lowercase letter “t,” and this cross shape is said to be an emblem that symbolizes the wooden post that Christ was crucified on, hence an important symbol of sacrifice, love, and faith. The meaning of this cross has been reimagined in the modern world, though. Some people consider it a trendy fashionable cross design, but this ‘fresh’ update is not just a style representation; it’s also a symbol of honor and patriotism in countries like Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, and other Nordic counties where the cross is seen in tombs, to signify the souls’ resurrection or as was rumored in 1219, a sign that the gods were in favor of the Danish forces – so, wearing the sideways cross represents honor and patriotism.📷 Is it OK to wear a cross necklace? Yes, depending on your intentions and faith, the cross necklace could have one of two meanings – a religious symbol or a non-religious symbol. For religious individuals, the cross necklace is a wearable reminder of their faith, the Lord’s loving sacrifice, and an important way for these individuals to connect to their faith. It’s also regarded as a physical proclamation of faith and, in other cases, a grounding reminder serving as encouragement when faced with challenges. The cross necklace would also inspire wearers to live by faith and grace. For non-religious individuals, the cross necklace is an accessory that people connect to in different ways. And thanks to the diverse cross necklace styles, individuals are attracted to different designs of necklaces. Generally, the cross inspires dedication and strength in people’s daily lives – even for the people who don’t practice or observe the Christian faith, the cross is very inspiring and empowering to them.Others wear the cross as an important symbol that reminds them to have faith and hope, where this symbol serves as an important motivator encouraging them to be their best selves. The cross is also deemed as a declaration of a life guided by love and caring for other people. So, whatever the reason behind your preference for the cross necklace, this piece is personal, especially for people who wear it with appreciation and understanding. This is not, however, to say that the same meaning is what makes everyone wear the cross necklace. It is worth noting that wearing the cross necklace does not, in any way, mean that you are mocking Jesus. What Does Cross Necklace MeanDoes a cross necklace protect you?Well, no symbol can protect you. However, most people wear crosses and ankhs because they
believe that the cross offers them some great sense of protection against all evil, jealousy, harm, spells & curse, bad luck, hoodoo, and all forms of danger.Tips for wearing a cross necklace if you are not religious Generally, the cross is considered an accessory that allows the wearer a great sense of self-expression, hence the high demand for the necklace even among non-religious individuals.Personalize the cross. You could have a birthstone or any other preferred gemstone added to your cross necklace. If you wear the sideways cross, it’s recommended that you wear it with a casual outfit for a more stylish feel. But you could still dress it up, for example, with diamonds. You could wear it around the center of the chest or necklace or even to the side for that stylish asymmetrical look. Choose a cross necklace whose design and materials best express who you are. You could wear it as a pendant necklace, perhaps one with an additional charm. Get a gemstone encrusted cross necklace. Only wear the cross necklace if you are comfortable wearing it; make sure that it looks and feels good on your body. Opt for thicker chains for a more stylish look. Go for a layered look, say, one with a cross pendant and the other chain with a different kind of pendant.BAR NECKLACE MEANING, POPULAR STYLES & HOW TO WEAR IT RIGHT You’ve probably noticed the many elegant and classy women sporting bar necklaces to a variety of occasions – from a casual coffee to red carpet affairs. Anara Batima Aliyev
Tumblr media
BIRTHDAY: the 20th of the Lone Moon (March 20) AGE: 16 years old (before the war), 22 years old (during the war) GENDER: Female (she/her) OCCUPATION: Heir of House Aliyev and Leader of the Aliyev Horde CLASS: Noble --- > Sniper --- > Bow Knight AFFILIATIONS: The Kingdom of Almyra, House Aliyev PREFERENCE: Bisexual (with a leaning for girls)  KNOWN LANGUAGES: Almyran, Common tongue, language of the Leicester Alliance (has an understanding but not fluent)
APPEARANCE: A young woman of a small and slender built with dark hair, dark eyes, and a tan complexion (though not as tan as those from the capital of Almyra). She often seen sporting the traditional warrior uniform of an Aliyev Horde leader complete with her golden badges of honor and status.
CHARACTERISTICS: (+) courageous, steadfast, ambitious ; (-) stubborn, outspoken, prideful
Keep in mind that Anara’s house has been placed in charge of defending the border between Fodlan and Almyra ever since the Alymran invasion of 961 and since House Goneril kept them in check with a fortress. She doesn’t take too kindly from folks from Fodlan at the beginning as she has certain presumptions instilled in her from when she was a young girl. She is patriotic and sometimes to a fault. Furthermore, the proud warrior spirit of Almyra lives in her and so she occasionally thinks more with her fists than head.
STRENGTHS: Bow, Riding, Sword WEAKNESSES: Heavy Armor, Faith, Flying  BUDDING TALENT: Authority LOST ITEMS: Scarf of Almyran design, Book of poetry, Golden Jewelry  RECRUITMENT REQUIREMENTS: Anara can only be recruited in the Golden Deer Route. When Nader comes to aid Claude with Almyran forces, Anara is there in support.
In her Student at Garreg Mach AU, Anara is a Golden Deer Student who can be recruited to Black Eagles and Blue Lions, but leaves if you choose the Church of Seiros. She requires Riding and Authority in order to join your house.
 HER HISTORY
House Aliyev is an old and proud family of the Kingdom of Almyra. Based on the mountain range that separates Almyra from Fodlan, the House of Aliyev has long been tasked with protecting the border from its neighbors since their initial invasion of 961. The house trains recruits Almyra’s first line of defense – the Aliyev Horde – who are tasked with guarding the kingdom as tensions with Fodlan are always fraught and uncertain.
Born ANARA BATIMA ALIYEV, Anara is the eldest of seven daughters and the only biological heir of Lady Sezim. She was practically trained in combat since day one;; there are even rumors of the young heir learning to ride a horse before she knew how to walk. Her other mother, however, disputes such silly notions. Anara trains in hopes of joining the Horde and leading it in her mother’s stead when the time is right. Suffice to say, the warrior spirit of Almyra and the sense of duty and honor of Aliyev are strong in the house’s eldest daughter.
Due to her noble birth and family’s high standing, Anara was arranged to marry the King of Almyra’s son by a Fodlan foreigner, Claude, at a young age. While Anara wasn’t keen on marriage ( much less to a half-son of Fodlan ), her interest was peaked at the prospect of being queen. She grew side by side the young prince, and the two were often found playing games on each other rather than with each other. Through their growing friendship, Anara found that perhaps those of Fodlan weren’t too terrible after all.
However, the betrothal of Claude and Anara was never fulfilled as at the age of 14, Anara left to begin her official apprenticeship under her mother to take over the Horde. When she returned, Claude was gone. No details were given to her;; all she received was the ring the prince was instructed to give her on their wedding day. Anara didn’t bother to ask questions and simply left all of this in the past.
When war in Fodlan broke, the defense by the Goneril-Aliyev border doubled as Almyra didn’t want the battle of their neighbors to spill towards their lands. They Aliyev Horde was then split into two – the Right and the Left division – to better defend the border. Lady Sezim led the Left while Anara was appointed to lead the Right. Almyra was determined not to get caught in Fodlan’s conflict, but that changed when their lost heir prince requested aid from his people. Anara followed Nader to to support Claude – partially curious to see what happened to the boy she once called friend and fiance.
While the heir of Aliyev’s loyalty lies with the true Prince of Alymra, Anara cannot help but feel anger – betrayal even – at the fact he would hide his heritage with such seeming shame. But then again…Claude has always been better at schemes than she ever will be…

Please grace us a valentine fic revival time? I hope 2017 Mulder and Scully are still in love in this day :)
I couldn’t resist a little Vistor/Resident follow-up :)
He brings her lunch at work - a double order of sweet potatoes from Teaism and a sandwich for himself - and they eat together in her office, splitting a cupcake at the end of their meal.  She produces it from her desk drawer with a smile.  It’s apple spice cake, and it tastes like his grandmother’s recipe.  He licks his fingers clean and watches her dab crumbs off her face without removing her lipstick.
“You know Valentine was a martyr,” he says.
“I’m Catholic,” she reminds him.  She smiles wryly.
“Not everybody’s versed in the mythology,” he counters.
“Mulder,” she says, “first of all, I’ve spent long enough around you and studying ritualistic killers to have made a moderately exhaustive study of religious icons of any number of faiths.”
“Second of all?”
“Second of all, everybody knows that Valentine was a martyr,” she tells him.
“Who’s your saint?” he asks.
She smiles again.  “Catherine.”
“Of course,” he says.  “Who better than a princess who could out-argue anyone and who devoted herself to a higher cause?”
“Of course,” she says simply.  “My saint’s day always got folded into Thanksgiving.”
“We’ve never celebrated Valentine’s Day in the office,” he says.
“Is this leading up to some convoluted proposal?” she asks.  “Because you don’t usually devote lunch to hagiography.”
He reaches into his pocket.  “You know how to suck all the romance out of a room, Scully,” he says, setting a small box on the desk between them.
She looks at the box and back at him.  “Mulder.”
He nudges it toward her.  “Just open it.”
She reaches out and takes it, opening it gingerly, her eyes locked on his.  Gold gleams gently against the dark velvet inside the box.
“It doesn’t have to be a wedding ring,” he says, as she reaches in and takes it out, rolling it between her fingertips.  “I had my mother’s jewelry melted down.  I wanted to make something new.”
“We already made something new,” she says, her eyes luminous as she looks at him.
“This is it, Scully,” he says, taking her hand.  “For me.  This is it.  You’re it.  I just wanted to mark the occasion.”
She hands him the ring and he slips it onto her finger.  It doesn’t look like an engagement ring or a wedding band, exactly, but it looks right on her hand.  He cradles her fingers with his and it’s a perfect moment, as magical as he might have expected from a wedding.  They gaze at each other and he knows that this time, they’ll manage to make a life together that doesn’t draw the darkness to them.
“Don’t forget we have dinner reservations after therapy,” she says, and it sounds like a lifelong vow.
“I’ll be there,” he promises.
He goes back to work, feeling the absence of the box in his pocket after carrying it for weeks back and forth between his desk and hers.  It’s a Tuesday, like and unlike any other, and he will never be the same.  He passes a window and realizes that his reflection is smiling.
Back at his desk, he takes out another box and opens it to look at his father’s wedding ring.  He weighs it in his palm for a moment.  His father, misguided, a man with poor instincts and worse friends.  His father, who wasn’t there when he needed him.  But his father was a patriot too, and loved his children.
He hesitates a second more and then slips on the ring.  It fits him, and he thinks of genetics, the link between his father’s hands and his own.  He opens his desk drawer again, takes out the photograph of William, and tucks the corner into the frame of the photograph of himself and Scully.  He’ll get another frame for it tomorrow, but no member of his family will stay in the darkness.  They are all made whole on this day of martyrs.  They are done with sacrifice.

What Does the Cross Bar Necklace Mean
Dreams from an early age of the fairytale wedding ceremony regularly centre upon getting the ideally suited dress. Potentially then it was no surprise to anyone when some years later, I was again thrilled by the testimonies of adventure and ideals of patriotism a further man in uniform brought into my life. Nevertheless despite my personal initial fascination with the military, when a relationship license and a Budget Pick up truck found me personally halfway across the nation as a fresh bride of Uncle Sam, I used to be less than charmed. Also, my husband nonetheless looked just like handsome in his high and small and Gown Blues, and I was still feeling blissful regarding being a newlywed, however it did not take very long until Choice the Maritime Corps and I were just not going to go along.

For instance, when a typical Nigerian couple is certainly going through relationship crises, they would frequently hardly ever throw in the towel like it is generally done in the western countries. Remember, marriage in Nigeria can be described as union of two families- the mans and the women’s family, and therefore the households would step in in cases where things are getting out of hand they usually would perform whatever they can to settle the matter amicably within the family level. Nigerians typically, have undeniable respect for his or her parents and would hear and pay attention to them at any point in time.

And right now there husbands helped bring them back to England, not like most Nigeria men which will marry a Nigerian females and keep them back home like a second option just in case the bright white wives disappoints them. Thank you JESUS that any of us still have black men that wont have at this time there own girls as a second option.

How President Trump has already hurt American democracy — in just 50 days
washingtonpost.com 1996-2017 The Washington Post
How President Trump has already hurt American democracy — in just 50 days By Brian Klaas March 10 Brian Klaas (@brianklaas) is a fellow in comparative politics at the London School of Economics and author of “The Despot’s Accomplice: How the West is Aiding and Abetting the Decline of Democracy.”
Today, March 10, is President Trump’s 50th day in office. Since his inauguration on Jan. 20, Trump has governed in a way that poses a unique threat to the integrity of American democracy.
Democracy is bigger than partisanship. Therefore, this is not a critique of Trump’s policy proposals. Rather, it’s a sober assessment of American democracy at a pivotal moment — and a call for Americans of all political stripes to press all politicians to agree, at minimum, on preserving the bedrock principles that make the United States a democracy.
The call is urgent. In just 50 days, Trump’s presidency has already threatened American democracy in six fundamental ways:
1. Trump has attacked the integrity of voting, the foundation of all democratic systems. Without any evidence, Trump has repeatedly claimed that millions of people voted illegally in 2016. This claim is not true. Every serious study that has assessed voter fraud, including studies conducted by Republican presidents, has concluded that the scale of the problem is negligible.
Nonetheless, on his sixth day in office, Trump called for a major investigation into voter fraud — now largely forgotten by many Americans. Unfortunately, his assertion has not been forgotten by a large swath of Trump’s base. Tens of millions likely now believe Trump’s claim — which will certainly prove an important “alternative fact” when, in the future, attempts are inevitably made to make it harder for certain Americans to vote.
2. After attacking the integrity of his own election, Trump has also undermined the credibility of his own office. Democracy will not function if Americans cannot be sure that the president’s claims are at least grounded in evidence-based reality. And yet, in just 50 days, Trump has made at least 194 false or misleading claims — an average of about four daily. (March 1 was the only day without one, so far.)
Recently, Trump’s early morning tweet-storm alleging that former president Barack Obama personally ordered a wiretap of Trump Tower has not been backed up by a shred of evidence. Key Republican senators and representatives have expressed their bafflement at the accusation. Yet there have been no consequences for the president baselessly accusing his predecessor of criminal action. Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) went so far as to chide reporters for asking questions about the wiretap claim, saying, “I think a lot of the things he says, I think you guys sometimes take literally.” How can democracy function when people can’t take the president literally?
3. Trump’s administration has repeatedly flouted ethics guidelines without consequence. When Trump failed to discipline Kellyanne Conway for brazenly giving a “commercial” for Ivanka Trump’s jewelry and clothing line, the Office of Government Ethics had to send an extraordinary letter reminding Trump that ethics rules apply to the executive branch. Trump has also failed to meaningfully separate himself from his business interests. Most recently, Trump received 38 lucrative trademarks from China, not just a likely violation of the Constitution’s emoluments clause but also a benefit that will call into question whether Trump’s foreign policy will pursue what is best for the American people or what is best for his profits. That conflict of interest is precisely why democracies set ethics guidelines — and why it threatens democracy to violate them.
4. Trump has attacked the independent judiciary. When U.S. District Judge James Robart defied Trump’s travel ban, Trump called him a “so-called judge” and insinuated that he would lay blame for a terrorist attack squarely at the feet of the judiciary. Presidents routinely object to individual court decisions, but it threatens democracy to go one step further and demonize any judge that dares cross the president. After all, the judiciary is charged with upholding the law and the Constitution — not blindly affirming the president’s worldview.
5. Crucially, Trump has accelerated a long-term trend, prodding tens of millions of Americans to further lose faith in basic institutions of American government. Any experts in federal agencies are now the “deep state.” Trump’s team has begun suggesting that the nonpartisan, independent Congressional Budget Office — a trusted authority for Democrats and Republicans since 1974 — is simply a group of hacks. There is virtually no authority trusted by both Democrats and Republicans anymore. Instead, the opposing sides are all too inclined to view government as captured by evil partisans rather than disagreeing patriots. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) made this view explicit, recently calling for a “purge” of leftists from government in an astonishingly totalitarian tweet. Public trust is part of the lifeblood of democracy, and it is draining faster than ever.
6. Finally, Trump has attacked a cornerstone of every democracy: the free press. He has called legitimate media organizations “fake news” no fewer than 22 times on Twitter in the first 50 days — and many more times in speeches. Worse, Trump called the press the “enemy of the American People,” language that echoes Mao and Stalin rather than Ronald Reagan or John F. Kennedy.
Trump only views the press as a legitimate player in American democracy insofar as it is willing to affirm his narrative. To Trump, negative polls are fake. Unfortunately, his attacks are working. A recent Quinnipiac poll showed that 81 percent of Republicans agree that the media is “the enemy of the American people.” Eighty-six percent of Republicans trust Trump to tell the truth rather than the media (up from 78 percent just two weeks earlier). Throughout history, the blurring of the line between fact and fiction has been a critical precursor to the breakdown of democracy and the creeping advance of authoritarianism.
Whether these six attacks are a deliberate long-term strategy to erode American democracy, or simply a political ploy to poison the electorate’s view against any anyone that is willing to defy the president, remains to be seen. Certainly, Trump is not fully to blame; he is capitalizing on long-term divisions and a long-term erosion of American institutions. But he has accelerated those trends.
The Constitution and checks and balances are not magical guardians. Documents don’t save democracy — people do. American democratic institutions are only as strong as those who fight for them in times of duress. This is one of those times, and this is just the beginning. It will be a long fight. To win it, Democrats and Republicans must set aside policy divides and unite in the defense of democracy.
