#Fallout: New California

Have you played/heard about Fallout: New California? I ask because, Iirc, the raider faction in that mod came from a Vault that subjected it dwellers to constant rock and metal music (which the raiders then used for their own radio station) because in the mod's wider lore, rock and metal was banned from airplay pre-war (You can't have a revival 50s suburbia without puritanism, y'know) and the Vault was an experiment on what Vault-Tec saw as "moral corruption". I've kinda taken it into my own personal headcanon, so I'd be curious to see if you like that as an explanation as to where all the rock music is?

OOooohh I love this as an explanation for why rock music is lesser known/underground in the Fallout world. It makes so much sense too!

Rock/Metal music has always been seen as a "corrupting" form of music that was seen as satanic, problematic, etc. I can totally see how the Fallout world would be no different about rock, if not worse. No, they were totally worse about it I can see it now. This gives me so many thoughts!! I have only ever heard briefly about Fallout: New California, but I have never heard of this vault!! So thank you so much for sharing this fun bit of information!

My thoughts:

Banning it from the radio and other forms of media would make the genre less popular and harder to get access to. But when the government bans things, especially enjoyable things like music and alcohol, people will find a way to get it/make it. So this means that when the oh so corrupt pre-nuked US government banned rock and anything similar, they created an underground world of music. I can see the underground community being a bit on the smaller side(or maybe the other way around?? Maybe it was huge!), but it was there for sure. I can also see it being more on the punk side of things, doing what punks do best. Hating the government and creating incredible music.

I also love the idea of how rock lives on after the world is destroyed is by generations of raiders from a rock music filled vault. I also like the idea of metal/rock being carried on through some pre-war ghouls who never lost their heavy metal side. It seems especially fitting for metal/rock to be primarily in raider communities, at least at first.

Replayed Honest Hearts. Actually somehow more racist than I remembered. How the fuck did this come out in 2011? The Dead Horses are literally from a Native American reservation, the Sorrows are from a place called "The School" (perhaps a residential school?). Daniel treats the Sorrows like children, none of the tribes have their leaders present able to voice their feelings on Joshua's and Daniel's ideas. Even the representatives we do get don't have strong feelings either way and just praise their two white male leaders. The Sorrows' Shaman is literally played as a joke and nothing more. At no point are you allowed to question the ethics of two Mormons "teaching the good word" (see trading aid for conversions) to these Tribes.

It's fucking infuriating.
