Football in the Sun
I got a message from Richard Burns asking if I was available to cover a couple of games that were happening on Sunday. At that point, I was committed to a preseason game elsewhere, but as things turned out, that game fell through, and I was able to say yes.
I’m glad I did.
Harrogate Railway had arranged a Ladies Day charity event, with the aim to raise money towards Dee Swales’ cancer treatment, which is not available on the NHS.
The event was a double header of football, with Railway’s firsts and reserves in action, helping all the teams taking part with their preseason preparations, and of course raising much needed funds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first game up at midday was Railway Reserves against neighbours Knaresborough Town Women, a repeat of their rivalry last season in the West Riding County Women’s Football League Division Four.
Town got off to a flier, scoring quickly and settling into a rhythm within the first ten minutes of the game.
It has been written elsewhere, that on days like these, the actual score isn’t important…and that is completely correct; but an obvious benefit of taking part is that all of the players get a good runout ahead of the start of the new league campaign.
That’s not to say it wasn’t competitive!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first game came to an end with Knaresborough winning and both teams showcasing a crop of young players who really impressed.
The Railway management team voted Ellis Baxter as Knaresborough Town’s player of the match, and Boro’s coach gave Rail’s stopper, Maria Chatzistamou the player of the match award for an absolutely outstanding performance between the sticks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Railway’s first team were next up playing Farsley Celtic Women and what an amazing game that was! Over the course of the 90 minutes, the impetus pulsated back and forth between the two sides, with some great interplay.
Chances came and went; the frame of the goals were tested several times as both sets of players showed that they wanted to win.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Railway struck first, with Farsley equalising before half time. The second half continued where the first left off, with Dee unlucky not to score as she struck a beautiful shot past a stranded Farsley keeper from the edge of the box, thundering the ball against the bar and rebounding out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the final whistle blew, Railway’s first team had earned a narrow victory with Harrogate’s Paige Swales voted player of the match.
The games were important but there was obviously something more so, and that was the football family coming together to show support and to help one of their own.
At the time of writing, the amount raised is £2,656 but more donations would be welcome. You can find the Justgiving page here…
If there was one footballing thing to take away from Railway’s Ladies Day…with the number of young, very talented footballers on display…the future of local women’s football is very bright!
Well done to everyone who organised and took part to make the day very successful and thank you for inviting me.

Hurst Cross horror story ahead of premier cup final
Non-league previews
IF the stories coming out of Hurst Cross are to be believed, HYDE UNITED can't fail to win the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup final on Monday night and lift the trophy for the first time since 2006.
Opponents ASHTON UNITED — who last won the cup 30 years ago when they were North West Counties League champions — claim they are as badly riven with injuries and illness as they were last weekend when they lost to the Tigers for the second time this season in the league.
Manager Mike Clegg said this morning: "We still have eight players unavailable and as it stands we're going to struggle to find 11 to face Scarborough. It's a shocking end to the season for us as we were flying a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully, we may have a few back for the final."
Ben Hardcastle and Sam Sheridan, both of whom missed the 3-0 Hyde defeat, were back in the side for Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Atherton Collieries.
The Tigers, on the other hand, are at full strength and go into the weekend on the back of three consecutive victories and without conceding a goal in the last four.
Nick Spooner says his biggest problem is also one of selection, but in his case it's which players to choose from a squad that's at full strength except for Liam Tongue.
"We're looking forward to both matches this weekend. Decisions will have to be made about selection with the two games being so close. We want to keep up the good run in the league but we've definitely got an eye on Monday night," the the Tigers boss admitted.
Tomorrow (Saturday) in the Pitching In NPL premier division both clubs are at home. Ashton play Scarborough while Bamber Bridge are at the Project Solar UK Stadium.
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC travel to the North East hoping to take advantage of the nerves that are clearly showing in South Shields' challenge for the NPL title.
The Mariners have won only two of their last seven matches and all the pressure will be on them as Celtic look to bounce back from a bitterly disappointing performance in the home loss to Radcliffe.
Simon Haworth has a full squad to choose from but could well ring the changes after admitting he felt let down by his team last Saturday. Justin Johnson and Callum Harris may return to the starting line-up as the manager looks to restore the spark that lifted Bridge to safety.
Which CURZON ASHTON will turn up at the Tameside Stadium to face Boston United in National League North? It's a question many fans will be asking.
In recent weeks the Nash have lost to Gloucester, Farsley and Telford, who are all towards the foot of the table. Yet on Tuesday they held leaders Brackley to a goalless draw.
Alex Curran returns to the team but Adam Thomas is injured and Connor Dimaio is unavailable. Connor Teale's loan from Fleetwood Town has been further extended until the end of the season.
In the NPL first division west, striker Eric Watson is set to make his debut for GLOSSOP NORTH END who are home to City of Liverpool.
However, Lee Wilshaw has a calf injury, Jordan Scott has covid, and Jamie Rainford has to undergo a pre-match fitness test on a damaged calf.
Alex Maloney has been recalled from Barnoldswick Town.
Manager Dave Fish is demanding a much improved performance from his MOSSLEY team after last week's 1-0 defeat at City of Liverpool in a game he described as making a compelling case for bottomless brunches and shopping on Saturday afternoons.
Reflecting on the visit to fourth-placed Leek, the Lilywhites boss said: "I'm expecting a tough day. We're going to have to be a lot better than last weekend."
Levi Phillips and Bailey Marsden are available after missing the match at the vanEupen Arena and Louis Potts is in the squad after rejoining training.
On the debit side, Devon Matthews is suspended after last Saturday's red card. Steve Mason has returned from Avro but is unavailable.
Southport have recalled Dec Evans on account of his injury, which means he ends his Seel Park career on 149 appearances.
Freddie Sass, Dale Latham, David Kuba-Kuba and Will Hartshorne have all been ruled out until next season.

A Season in Preview
Tumblr media
Knaresborough Town Women have had a good ‘summer of 2024’ preseason, maybe not in results, but in looking to play some fantastic teams from higher in the FA pyramid. The actual final scores in some of those games were not as important as getting minutes in the legs [yes that is a cliché] and an understanding of how the new faces in the team gel with the returning squad of players.
The real action started just over a week ago – with Town’s first game in Division One being an away fixture against Golcar United, that ended in a hard-fought victory. That has been followed this last Sunday with a home win against Brayton Belles.
The 100% start means that Boro sit second in the table, just behind Thackley on goal difference, and two points above third placed Leeds Hyde Park Firsts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who Will Town Be Playing This Season?
Looking at the teams in Division One, it is important to realise that this league is probably the most ‘settled’ league that Knaresborough have played in to date. The teams that find themselves in the division are ones that are there on merit, rather than having been newly formed and placed by the regional FA.
Taking each team in order that they are currently placed in Division One…
Thackley were relegated from the Premier Division in 2023/24, playing 18 games with a record of four wins and 14 losses. They had a goal difference of -45 and ended up with 12 points.
Leeds Hyde Park ended the last season third in Divison One, missing out on a promotion spot by a single point. Their goal difference was slightly superior to Farsley Celtic’s who gained promotion having finished second. Leeds’ record for last season was played 18, won 14, drew one, and lost three. They had a goal difference of +57 and ended the season on 43 points.
Ackworth Girls, like Leeds, were in Division One last season, putting in a solid set of results to end in fourth place on 31 points. They won ten games, drew one and lost seven with a goal difference of +7.
Golcar United (fifth at the end of the season) had an almost identical record to Ackworth, except their goal difference ended up being -15.
Huddersfield Amateurs ended last season in sixth place, winning six, drawing one, and losing 11 games, with a goal difference of -22 and a points tally of 19.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brayton Belles ended in seventh place with a points tally of 16 having won four, drawn four and lost 10. They had a goal difference of -34, three goals better than Hepworth United who ended the season in eighth place.
Hepworth won five games, drew one and lost 12, ending the season on 16 points; with Republica Internationale taking ninth place in the league having won two, drawn four and lost 12 with a goal difference of -23 and a points tally of 10.
Bradford City U23s were promoted alongside Knaresborough Town last season, and I’ve written about how good a team and set up they have had in the past two years since being formed. They are a fantastic team and have got this season’s campaign started this past Sunday with a 1-1 draw away against Leeds Hyde Park.
Thoughts
The summary of what the teams have done in the past is one thing – what do I predict for this season?
I think that Thackley and Leeds Hyde Park will push for those top two spots in the league – as they did last season. I also believe that Ackworth and Golcar will challenge at the top of the league. All four teams have a great pedigree in Division One and know a lot about each other.
I believe that both Bradford City and Knaresborough Town will also be in the mix for those top two positions but will be a relative unknown for the other teams, which may be a plus for them.
I think Thackley will be the overriding favourites to regain their Premier League status, with the other teams fighting for the remaining promotion spot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Knaresborough Town Women
Town have had, by anyone’s standards, an extraordinary two years of success. The club has an ethos of maintaining a small squad of players, ensuring that they have the right mix of skills, rather than having a larger pool of players to pick from.
Mike Bligh has recruited superbly over the past few months, keeping the core of the team that has been so successful together, but has managed to add a few players that take the positions they play in, to the next level.
There are a number of players that haven’t featured for Town in the first two games of the season, waiting impatiently on the sidelines for clearance to play – they will also add to the depth of talent available on match days.
Competition within the team for individual places is strong, no one can take their place in the starting line-up for granted, and this is how it should be. The club needs the increased internal competition for places to be reflected on the pitch against what will be, some of the best teams they have played against in their short history.
What I do know, is that Knaresborough Town will be near the top of the league this season. They can be more than a match for any of the Division One opponents that they will face during the 2024/25 campaign, but will have to understand that several of the teams in the league may well be as good as them – with the smallest of margins determining who takes the points on any given day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Prediction
As I write, Thackley and Boro’ occupy the top two spots in the league after just two games. I believe that come April when the final whistle goes, these two will still be occupying the top two spots.
Knaresborough Town would love to be league champions [who wouldn’t?], but the focus will be on winning as many games as they can and when the fixtures are complete, they will simply want one of those top two places and promotion to the Premier Division.
I believe that Leeds Hyde Park and Bradford City will only be a few points adrift at most, with Ackworth and Golcar United having a big say in the overall order of the top six.
Tumblr media
The Past, The Present, The Future
As many of you already know, I have been working alongside the amazing team at Knaresborough Town Women for the initial two years that they have been in existence. My involvement has been related to helping set up their media presence, including website content, photos, video, match reports, interviews, working with local radio and news outlets, marketing, and social media.
The initial aims were simple – make people aware that the team existed and grow a following of people that are interested in the players, the team, and the club. By any measure, this has been a success – massively helped by the tremendous achievements (back-to-back league title winning promotions) on the pitch.
However, it is time for me to move on and over the course of the past couple of months, I have handed over the reins to Amelia Eggleston, a young and talented student who I know will take the club to the next level.
I would also like to thank Connor and Avie for their help over the past two years – with them being involved in taking photos, interviewing the manager and players, and writing match reports.
The role I have undertaken has been a voluntary one, which has given back some great rewards – getting to know a fantastic group of players and being accepted within the team; working with a brilliant management team…Mike, Austen, Scott, James, Ged, Nick, and Nigel…to name just a few; and being able to work with a blank canvas to create – something that can be daunting, and is actually a rarity.
What’s next? Well, that is still to be decided and something that I will be working on over the next couple of months. I will be continuing to be involved in grassroots sport in the local area – as I am passionate about supporting those teams and clubs that deserve to be shown off to a wider audience.
I would also welcome chats with any agencies that would like to work with me on new and existing projects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note: These thoughts are my own, independent of the club, and not reflected by Knaresborough Town AFC Women.

Pressure mounts on Bridge boss Haworth
Non-league previews
SIMON HAWORTH must have strong shoulders as he's under phenomenal pressure as the season enters its final month.
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC have slipped to 20th place in the Pitching In NPL premier division after picking up only one point from the last 18 available. They have not scored in their last four games, with their barren spell extending to more than seven hours of football.
Fortunately, Bridge have a nine-point cushion between them and Witton Albion but even so will still be nervously comparing their record to clubs at the foot of the Isthmian and Southern premier divisions as the third-bottom outfit with the worst record from the three leagues will also go down.
Haworth accepted the possibly of relegation two weeks ago after the 3-1 home defeat by Warrington, although he said he felt he had enough in his team and the changing room to avoid it.
He added: "I think the season we've had has given us enough of a buffer but not enough to take our foot off the pedal. We need a few wins, most definitely. I don't want to be going into the last five games needing to win every week."
Haworth must be hoping for three points at Atherton Collieries tomorrow (Saturday) as those last five matches are Whitby H, Radcliffe H, South Shields A, Lancaster H, Hyde United A, and Buxton H.
Celtic have a fully fit though depleted squad to choose from including some deadline day additions.
At the other end of the scale, ASHTON UNITED travel to Morpeth looking to extend their unbeaten run to eight games. It's a sequence that has taken them to twelfth place and if it continues could even see them finish close to the play-off places.
Manager Mike Clegg reports a fully-fit squad apart from long-term absentees.
Buoyed by their fantastic comeback against Witton, HYDE UNITED welcome Gainsborough Trinity to the Project Solar UK Stadium looking to further cement their safety prospects. Last week's victory has given the Tigers an advantage which Witton can't close even if they win their two games in hand.
Manager Nick Spooner has signed burly striker Harry Pratt from neighbours Mossley to add some height and power to the front line. The only injury is Liam Tongue who dislocated a kneecap in the Witton match.
Midfielder Dale Whitham returns for CURZON ASHTON who are away to Kidderminster Harriers in National League North.
The game comes after yet another inconsistent period in which a goalless draw at York was followed by a home defeat against bottom club Farsley — a result which deeply disappointed manager Adam Lakeland. Losing at leaders Gateshead was perhaps more understandable.
Connor Teale is ill and Jamie Teale remains injured. Centre-back Harry Flowers, described as a long-term target, has joined Telford United for an undisclosed fee.
In the NPL first division west, GLOSSOP NORTH END visit Newcastle Town with new signing Eric Watson in the squad. However, striker Reuben Dass misses out with an Achilles injury picked up in training.
Khius Metz goes for knee surgery next month. Rory Fallon needs a knee scan.
Tyler Williams goes straight into the MOSSLEY squad for the home encounter with third-placed Marine. Mason Fawns faces a late fitness test after taking a knock in training.
Brad Kelly returns after recovering from a muscle strain.
New signing Louis Potts is unavailable until his season has finished with Avro. Jamie Hill restarts training this week and could appear in the last two or three matches.
Manager Dave Fish said: "Training has been positive this week and there are several players really pushing for a start including Sam Kilner and Connor Morris."
DEADLINE SIGNINGS Jack Donlan from Springhead to Ashton United Osebi Abadaki from Ashton United to Matlock Town
Eric Watson from Duluth (USA) to Glossop North End
Harry Pratt from Mossley to Hyde United
Jamie Hill from Prestwich Heys to Mossley Jackson Maguire from Stalybridge Celtic to Mossley Louis Potts from Avro to Mossley Tyler Williams from Lancaster City to Mossley
Jake Burton from Tranmere Rovers to Stalybridge Celtic (youth loan) Adam Gulzar from Harrogate Town to Stalybridge Celtic Amadin Omonor from Bolton Borough to Stalybridge Celtic Ethan Padden from Kidsgrove Athletic to Stalybridge Celtic

Tigers facing crunch clash
Non-league previews
NICK SPOONER has bolstered his HYDE UNITED squad by bringing a new full-back ahead of tomorrow (Saturday's) Pitching In NPL premier division relegation six-pointer with Witton Albion at the Project Solar UK Stadium.
The man in question is the manager's own son, Callum, who moves from Bamber Bridge where Spooner was a scout before taking the Hyde job last month.
He has also extended Lewis Earl's loan so that the Stockport County midfielder stays with the Tigers until the end of the season.
Spooner should have a full squad to choose from. To protect his players, and enable them to train last night, he fielded a side packed with youngsters for Wednesday's Cheshire Senior Cup tie at Crewe which Hyde lost 2-1. The game also provided Ciaran Summers with his first start for a month.
Recent results have enabled the Tigers to creep up into 19th place but although they hold a seven-point advantage over Witton, tomorrow's visitors have three games in hand. Mickleover, who are on the same points total as Hyde, 37, have played two matches fewer.
Spooner summed up his feelings in one sentence: "Yes it's an important match, but they all are at the moment."
Witton have also made signings. Yesterday they brought in goalkeeper Dermot Mee on loan from Manchester United and 20-year-old midfielder Oliver Puttnam on a dual registration with NWCL Congleton Town. They replace Greg Hall and the suspended Cesaire Lingouba respectively.
ASHTON UNITED visit Warrington on the back of a six-game unbeaten run that has taken them to eleventh place in the table. Sam Sheridan and Nathan Ntula are both back in the reckoning as the Robins look for a top-half finish.
However, Warrington, who won 1-0 at Hurst Cross in October, are a difficult proposition. They are masters of the art of breaking up the flow of play as they expertly proved at Bower Fold last week.
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC'S much depleted squad travel to Grantham for a game that could have massive implications for both clubs.
Bridge are looking to snap a losing streak of five games, while bottom club Grantham know that defeat and a Hyde win over Witton would almost certainly consign them to relegation.
Simon Haworth will be without defender Connor O'Grady (knee) and Matty Liptrott who has been recalled from his loan by Blackpool,  but he welcomes back Stephen Brogan after his three-game suspension.
There could also be a return to the side for striker Raul Correia after he was concussed early in the Runcorn Linnets Cheshire Senior Cup tie. But that will be a game-time decision.
CURZON ASHTON, who appear to have steadied the ship with a win and a draw after suffering two consecutive defeats, are home to bottom club Farsley Celtic in National League North.
At first sight, it looks a straightforward encounter for the Nash and could allow them to overtake Boston United who face leaders Gateshead. However, recent form has shown them to be less than confident against clubs they ought to beat. The two games they recently lost were against Gloucester and Telford, both well below them in the table.
The good news for manager Adam Lakeland is that his team came through Tuesday's goalless draw at York unscathed. Connor Teale and Marcus Poscha are back from injury.
Will Hartshorne misses MOSSLEY'S NPL first division west encounter with Newcastle Town at Seel Park after sustaining a hamstring strain at Kendal in midweek. Fortunately, the other players who picked up knocks at Parkside Road came through training unscathed last night.
Connor Morris returns but Brad Kelly has been called up by Rochdale's first team squad which means Jordan Hadlow takes over in goal.
Manager Dave Fish added: "Dec Evans looks likely to be out for the season but Freddie Sass is showing signs that he'll be fit to play some part.
"I'm looking to sign some more players before the deadline including a couple of the under-17s who have trained with us for the past couple of weeks."
Lewis Cunningham and Hugh Rodriguez both face fitness tests ahead of GLOSSOP NORTH END'S home clash with second placed Marine.
J'Nai Butterfield Steele has been allowed to join Wythenshawe Amateurs for a month to gain some match fitness.

Farsley Celtic 2-1 Curzon Ashton
Conference North
This game made me realise I am more attached to Boston United than I had previously thought. I was astounded at how poor the quality was during the opening half hour and I never think that at York Street.
Farsley came back from 1-0 down in this one. They should have been dead and buried but, despite a nice opening goal, lowly Curzon couldn't finish them off.

Bafana legend Radebe's son signs for English side Farsley Celtic
Bafana legend Radebe’s son signs for English side Farsley Celtic
[ad_1]
Tumblr media
Cape Town – The son of former Bafana Bafana and Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe has put pen-to-paper on a contract with English club Farsley Celtic.
Pending on his international clearance, Radebe Jnr, will join the Under-23 side in hopes of becoming a regular.
The 20-year-old’s father earned legend status after his dominant defensive displays for Leeds in the later 1990s and early 2000s.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve been thrilled to be able to chat to some amazing community groups who have benefited from additional funding thanks to the Aviva Community Fund. Last year I visited Twinkleboost, who deliver speech & language training to parents in deprived communities and the year before I spoke to some of the girls at Farsley Celtic Girls FC about how they benefited from being part of the team. Last month, I visited A4 Studios in Altrincham who secured funding the 2018 Aviva Community Fund. The Aviva Community Funds invites applicants to apply under one of three categories – Environment, Health & Well-being or Skills for Life to secure up to £25,000 in funding. You can then have your say, voting for groups close to your heart who would really benefit from the funding! The Aviva Community Fund also offers ‘more than money’ support through a…

Looks like Steve Kittrick has brought in another player to the fold, Ex Farsley Celtic Midfielder Ross Daley. He comes with bags of experience and as been another Ex Bradford Park Avenue player, he will be familiar some of the other new signings that have already committed for next season.

Ashton and Celtic set for derby clash
Non-league previews
THE roll of the fixtures dice has given ASHTON UNITED an unexpected say in the Pitching In NPL championship race.
Last Tuesday they scored a memorable 1-0 victory over South Shields courtesy of a late header by former Glossop man Ekow Coker, and next Tuesday they visit Matlock. In the meantime, tomorrow (Saturday) just to add a little spice, they are home to Tameside rivals Stalybridge Celtic.
Manager Mike Clegg said: "Sam Baird and Tom Warren are out for the rest of the season but other than that we are good to go. We're in the middle of an interesting sequence of games that has started well. But I'm sure it won't be that straightforward."
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC, who lost 2-0 at Stafford last weekend, go into the game without talismanic defender Steve Brogan who is suspended after being sent off against Nantwich Town.
Otherwise, Simon Haworth has a fully fit squad to choose from as Bridge face their sixth away trip in seven matches. They return to Bower Fold on Tuesday when they face Runcorn Linnets in the Cheshire Senior Cup.
Scott Bakkor has left Celtic and loan player Ntumba Massanka, who was recalled by parent club South Shields, is now with Boston United.
Last Saturday's defeat by Basford, and Nantwich's midweek victory over Witton, have left HYDE UNITED in a very precarious position with their premier division status hanging by a thread.
They are now third-bottom and only three points clear of Witton, having played three games more. They desperately need a win at Atherton Collieries.
Brad Roscoe and Krisel Prifti could be set for a return while manager Nick Spooner added: "We'll maybe have a new face in the squad if everything can be sorted."
In National League North, CURZON ASHTON are hoping to play their first Saturday match for a month. Last week's visit to Alfreton fell foul of a waterlogged pitch which led manager Adam Lakeland to tweet: "Frustrating not to play again today. No game for three Saturdays in a row is disappointing. Only game off today in at least the top three divisions."
League positions suggest the Nash should take all three points from Gloucester at the Tameside Stadium but in midweek they lost at Telford who are in a very similar position.
Striker Dom Knowles is in contention while Marcus Poscha and Matt Rain remain injured and Scott Wilson is still suspended. Jack Dunn has gone to Marine on loan.
Although unbeaten in the last four outings, Gloucester are described as having an injury-plagued defence, and have signed centre-half Pablo Martinez on loan from Bristol Rovers.
Manager Lee Mansell, who watched Curzon on Tuesday, said: "You could tell they looked a little bit rusty and hadn’t played for a little while. But I think those lads who played on Tuesday will have got the rustiness out, so we’ll probably see the very best of Curzon on Saturday and we’ll be expecting that."
In the NPL first division west, MOSSLEY visit Trafford, the club immediately below them in the table and with a very similar record.
Right-back Ollie Broe goes into the squad having been signed on a dual registration from Farsley, and manager Dave Fish is hoping to add another player in time for kick-off.
"We have a few unavailable this weekend, some through injury and some because they made plans with this originally being a free weekend," Fish explained.
Andreas Bianga's loan has been extended to the end of the season and talks are ongoing with Rochdale for Brad Kelley's loan to be extended.
GLOSSOP NORTH END have no match. Khius Metz is due to undergo his ACL operation in the coming week. Rory Fallon is still injured.
