I believe Kswift played Floristree bc she didn't take stranger's enthusiasm for what she did for granted. It's always the second generation in a style--who come to it as an established form with rules and not as something they're making up as they go along--that get vindictive towards the Inauthentic. That second generation is concerned with differentiating themselves in the market, which isn't a concern for the first generation because the style isn't a part of the market until there's a new generation convinced it's a viable path to success. (Certainly sometimes their appearance in turn convinces an originator that it's a path to success, and that's usually the exact point that bmore club producers/grime mcs/ etc start making tracks that could be mistaken for what's on American radio during the day)-- BUT: Inspired work begets fans, the most rabid of whom become emulators, and precisely because it's something they encountered and not something they channeled, the most rabid emulators become possessive.
All this is to say, Authenticity vs Inauthentic is a sales technique, a differentiation that begins to exist only when the art is for sale, and even then only to those concerned that a maximized return gets into the hands of the Right people--if I'm an ambitious emulator, that's obviously myself, but I could also be a customer in search of Authenticity-by-proxy.
I hear there are rumors in the universities that Authenticity as we conceive of it was invented by the real estate and tourism industries, to turn cheap neighborhoods into expensive ones ..

Baltimore’s New, Affordable Creative Hub Offers Questions and Answers
Inside Creative Labs by Thea Harvey-Brown The closures of Bell Foundry and Floristree suggested a grim outlook for Batlimore’s DIY arts scene. However, Creative Labs is a new space working to preserve the for-artists-by-artists tenet that drives collectives. Situated in an 18,000-square-foot warehouse, Creative Labs is an incubator of experimentation, designed to house affordable artist […] from BmoreArt | Baltimore Contemporary Art

If you are a Baltimore lad between the ages of 15 to 22 you are probably know Father Schmidt as the irascible organist & gym teacher (how you gonna kick a ball in those long droopy things? Try on this Speedo!) at the 13th Unitarian Church that operates out of the Floristree. But he is also 1/2 of international sound makers Matmos. And on occasion he goes off into his leather & crime novel filled study to work on solo projects. Here is a fine 1 of those, "Batu Malablab". An electronic excursion into gamelan & neo-exotica as if San Francisco & Baltimore had merged & started to sink overrun with wine nurtured vines & rusty brambles. Near mint, open in shrink, $25.

Matmos - Ultimate Care II Excerpt Nine from Thrill Jockey Records on Vimeo.
"Ultimate Care II Excerpt Nine" is from the Matmos album "Ultimate Care II," out February 19 on Thrill Jockey Records.
CD/LP: thrilljockey.com/products/ulti... Bandcamp: matmos.bandcamp.com/
Director, animator: Ed Apodaca Director, creative director: Lisa Berghout Director of photography: Nnathan Moody Actor, animation assistant: Dario Apodaca Production company: l.inc design (l-inc.com)
Alternately pastoral and high tech, the third video for Matmos’s album “Ultimate Care II” is titled “Ultimate Care II Excerpt 9.” In keeping with the domestic origins of the album, which is built entirely out of the sounds of the washing machine in Matmos’ basement, the newest video for the album is a homegrown, family affair. The video was co-directed by Ed Apodaca and Lisa Berghout, a husband and wife team who run L-inc, a motion graphics and animation firm, but for this video they enlisted an extra pair of collaborators: their teenage son Dario Apodaca, a keen student of graphic design and digital media who appears in the opening shot and assisted with animation duties, and their neighbor Nathan Moody, a colleague and friend who experimented with the placement of Go Pros inside washing machines and provided extreme close up photography of lint and laundry detergent crystals.
The video begins and ends with Dario, the only human actor, loading clothes into and out of a washing machine, which becomes a gateway to a turbulent interior world. Describing their creative process, Ed narrates: “Lisa was thinking about how to conceptualize a washing machine visually. Her focus was around creating pastoral, aerial and clothing scenes inside front and top loaders that will move and or fall apart with the spinning of the machine, generating a surreal take on washers and their uncanny movement. I mapped textures to cubes with an abstract washing machine front and back to further personify the machines.” The result is a tightly rhythmic sequence of images that contrast the clean with the dirty, the macro with the micro. In its most intimate setting, we telescope into a hairy grey jungle of lint seen in extreme close up. In its widest view, skyscrapers are made to throb and twist to the clamorous industrial rhythms, while a huge “agitator” from a washing machine seems to rotate entire freeway systems and suburbs. Working together, the Apodaca/Berghout family and their friendly neighbor have fashioned a detailed, delirious and vibrant audio-visual ode to an everyday household chore. Matmos tour dates: Feb. 20 - Baltimore, MD - Floristree March 15 - Chicago, IL - Thalia Hall March 19 - Brooklyn, NY - National Sawdust April 13 - Philadelphia, PA - International House
