It was refreshing to hear out Avni Bansal thoughts on the Current times : The Covid-19 Pandemic.

The whole idea of social distancing has provided my thoughts a shelter to live in. Solitude is a place where the creative mind wants to eagerly express itself because you are able to disengage from the demands of other people and the world around you. I am scared, I am scared of the loneliness and isolation which will haunt me eventually. The idea of a virtual world, can never fill up the gap of in-person conversations and physical bond. I am scared of the falls in the economy, reading stories about how it is difficult for the daily wage workers, migrants to make their ends meet,and supporting their families is disappointing. The health care systems are collapsing as the no. of cases are rising day by day worldwide.

Little smrky yet important observations on my end for the time being - I have lost a few kilos and my skin has improved,it is radiating as I am able to give time to all aspects of my way of living. - I have come to know that my brother actually cooks well and he is great at swiping the floor too. - In the span of 28 years of me staying with my family, I have seen my father for the first time sitting and operating his clinic from home and both my parents have developed a habit of watching one hindi movie each day. - The sky looks blue and I am able to see stars now from my rooftop. - Various freelance artists and design firms are engaging with the public via going live on instagram, explaining the processes, teaching the methods of creation. - I have been talking to friends who are staying alone in their residence and are able to cope up with the limitations and bounding by themselves. - People have been sending me photographs of the dishes they are preparing in their home kitchens, enjoying the home cooked food. - I see my neighbors standing in the balconies with music in the background talking to others. We humans tend to fill up our minds with new voids for regular distractions- Voids that harass you, Voids that leave you deviated, Deviated from those sceptical realities. Voids,that make you think insane. Insane to the extent that, your mind is crppled, Voids, that leave you unbothered, Unbothered even of your own existence. Voids, that provide you an empty space, A space,to be refilled again. Refilled again with those anonymous thoughts, Anonymous enough to be left unattended, Slowly disappearing to become a new void.

Avni Bansal as a print-maker and sculptor, probes the lines of separation between 'high-art' and craft- forms through the visual tool of design. She tries to understand this crucial relationship by re-looking at the Art and Crafts Movement in London initiated by William Morris and John Ruskin. Using wit and humour, she weaves her quest for abstraction through critical theoretical frameworks of mass/ popular culture and the phenomena of folk and tribal by appropriation and re-contextualization of motifs and forms. She has done her bacholers from College of Art,Delhi and master's from M.S.U, Faculty of Fine Arts,in 2016 securing a gold medal. She has been shown both in India and abroad, International Biennale of Small Graphics,Inter-Art Foundation, Romania,2016; Stree Drishti- Contemporary Women Printmakers of India at Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Art and Design,Poland and Regional Museum Gudalajara, Mexico, 2019; 8th Sofia Print Triennale, Bulgaria 2020. She has also bagged the National Award, 56th National Exhibition of Art, Lalit Kala Akademi in 2015.

Is Career In Underwater Photography Lucrative?

Underwater photography is one of the most fascinating career options. If you have a passion for both photography and ocean then this is a field that is not only lucrative but also satisfying. Let’s know more about a career as an underwater photographer.

What is photography?

Photography is defined as the art of capturing light in the form of images with the help of a camera. The subjects of these images can be anything from everyday objects to nature or even stars and galaxies, depending on the equipment used and the purpose of the photograph. There are several branches of photography such as wildlife photography, food photography, fashion photography, photojournalism, etc. In this article, we will be discussing a very specific branch of photography which is underwater photography, what it is, the job and career options available in it and the kind of salary one can expect.

What is underwater photography?

Underwater photography is a branch of photography that involves the capturing of pictures underwater as the name suggests. The subjects of these pictures may include marine creatures, marine plants, and animals, coral reefs underwater scenarios like sunken ships, the effect of sunlight underwater, etc.

Underwater photography may also include shooting videos underwater.

What are the requirements and skills?

The first and the most important requirement to become an underwater photographer is to be a qualified SCUBA diver. It is a prerequisite for entering this field as all of the work is done underwater and photographers may need to spend long periods of time underwater at a stretch. A good place to train as a diver may be the Professional Association of Diving Instructors or PADI. A course in diving and snorkeling could last for 3 to 4 days. However, the course must be done through an accredited organization. In such courses, the candidates are taught the basics and proper scuba technique safety procedures.

Another obvious requirement is the skill of photography. Hence, it is better to pursue a degree in photography. Now a day, many colleges and universities offer diploma and degree courses in photography. This is necessary, not only for the skills in photography but also for the knowledge of knowing how to use different cameras and equipment. Having a degree with a marine background is also appreciated but not compulsory.

Other than all this, the aspirant must be physically fit and willing to travel a lot and spend long hours underwater for his or her projects. There are many pressure changes underwater and hence the divers must be in good health in order to withstand them.

The photographer should have a good sense of lighting and color contrasts, especially in such unusual situations and that too, naturally.

Underwater photography is one of the most unique career options in the world. To be successful in this career, it is important to have more following and exposure. Here, social media platforms like Instagram or blogs can come in handy. And aspirant must also have an impressive, online portfolio in order to attract potential clients. Some companies do higher underwater photographers. However, most people in this field choose to be freelancers and work for magazines or channels like National Geographic or Discovery Channel.

It is always advised to take photography courses and learn how to use a camera and click photographs before taking a scuba diving course. This would make the journey of an underwater photographer smoother as one of the two main requirements is easily fulfilled beforehand.

It is after getting a scuba diving certification that an underwater photographer can start looking for projects.

The equipment for underwater photography is different from normal photography as the camera is needed to be taken underwater. It is most advisable to practice photography with a normal DSLR from Canon or Nikon and learn about the different aspects of photography, white balance, exposure and generally how to operate a camera.

Cameras that are used for underwater photography may be sealed in watertight plastic containers. Sometimes special flashes may also be used when taking photographs. The equipment must be properly checked before diving so that it doesn’t get damaged by leaking.

Underwater photographers may also choose their specialties like clicking pictures of animals like fish or dolphins, underwater vegetation, pictures of underwater scenarios such as sunken ships or even fashion photography underwater which is an upcoming field.

In the beginning, one may be paid much less than expected or maybe not even be paid at all. in such situations, it is always better to invest in the future by selling your photos at low cost to smaller publications in hopes of being discovered by major ones. It is also always better to get more and more experience in order to become successful and be recognized in this business. Some corporations may also employ underwater photographers.

However, there is another option available than freelancing or joining a company. One can always start their own underwater photography business by taking up projects based on an individualistic commission basis.

Underwater photography is a rough field and it is not very easy to find jobs here. You have to be brilliant in your profession in order to make a mark in the industry. Thus, perfection is the only key and perfection can only be achieved with a great amount of practice.

What is the pay like for an underwater photographer?

Underwater photography is not the most fruitful career when it comes to salaries. On average, the salary of an ordinary underwater photographer is about 32,000 dollars per year. Ryanair strikes: Thousands face travel chaos as pilots set for summer holiday walkouts

Thousands face travel chaos as Ryanair pilots plan to stage walkouts during the summer holidays.

There will be a two-day strike from just after midnight on 22 August until just before midnight on 23 August, according to the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA).

A second walkout will then be held from the early hours of 2 September until just before midnight on 4 September.

“There are four runways at San Francisco’s International Airport (SFO). This is a rare look at the approach end of runways 28 left and right. I had dreams of documenting the motion at SFO and arranged permission to fly directly overhead. What a windy day it was. Winds at SFO were 35-45 miles per hour, which meant a bumpy flight, and it was much harder to control the plane while photographing. The flight was challenging, but it was also so thrilling that I couldn’t sleep for several days afterward.”

“A herd of ibex in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland cross a ridge above Lake Brienz. Their powerful and impressive horns show who the king of the Alps are. Ibex are ideally adapted to live at dizzying heights. The continuing ridge path and the rising fog show the natural habitat of these animals. After a few hours of observing the animals, I spotted the ibex herd on one side of the ridge. Several ibex stopped at the transition to view the world around them.”

In the province of Avila, horses and horsemen jump over bonfires in the ritual that has been maintained since the 18th century. To make the photo, I moved from Seville to San Bartolomé de Pinares because I am very interested in photographing ancestral rites.”

I felt divinity when I saw an old man doing tai chi in the sun.”

“Dusky dolphins often travel together in great numbers in the deep canyons of the Kaikoura, New Zealand in search of food. They glide through the ocean effortlessly, coming up only to breathe. Dusky dolphins are fast and will often keep pace with a speeding boat. I waited on the bow of the boat as the Dusky dolphin almost broke through the surface. Their elegance and streamlined bodies are built for speed and maneuverability—accentuated by the smooth, clear water of the New Zealand coastline.”

“What happens before a wave breaks? That question has been my assignment this past year. On this particular day, I decided to shoot the sunset on the east side of Oahu, Hawaii. About 100 photographers were out in the morning, but I had the evening to myself. The textures from the trade winds created subtle colors from the west and blended well using my 100mm lens. I had to look into my viewfinder while this wave was breaking. Not an easy task when a wave is about to crush you.”

I’m a freelance photographer, and the series “Cave Life” is a long-term project of mine. In China’s Loess Plateau, local residents dig holes in the loess layer to create cave living spaces, known as yaodongs, and use the heat preservation properties to survive cold winters. This series mainly records the life, entertainment, belief, labor, and other daily scenes of the people living in the caves.”

Bishwa Ijtema is one of the major Islamic religious gatherings which is observed annually in Dhaka and millions of Muslims visit during this time. Dedicated prayer grounds are not large enough to handle this huge number of people, so large numbers of people come to Tongi, the main street of Dhaka. All the ground transportation and pedestrian crossings are suspended during that time.”

Brian Strutton, Balpa’s general secretary, added: “We have had no formal offer from Ryanair and it is imperative that we resolve this dispute urgently to avoid strike action.

“No pilot wants to spoil the public’s travel plans but at the moment it seems we have no choice.”
