“Freight Car Hangs On River Brink,” Border Cities Star. November 21, 1931. Page 3. ---- COLLAPSE of the ‘apron’ at the transfer slip of the old Canadian Pacific Railway dock this morning provided the wreckers with on all-day job. After the wreck, as shown above, two cars loaded with copper were left in the intricate position as revealed by a Star photographer. Several months ago four cars were plunged into the river in a similar manner.

This fuzzy dreary image - with yellow sky - is perhaps the earliest colour film of a Canadian railway yard that I have seen.  Apparently this is Winnipeg.  I think it is immediate post war, but need to go back and verify the details.  Somewhere on you tube.  I need to take better notes!

I think it paints the picture I want to model - but what do you make of the yellow sky?  Obviously, the colour balance is out . . .   So it seems risky to lean too heavily on this for colour information.  

But ignoring the colours themselves, two facts are clearly illustrated: the paint is very desaturated.  And the grey grunge is significant.

And that - I think - is the reality of paint in that era.   So what I want to model.

This rather poor image at a loco servicing facility is not here because one can see details clearly.  It’s all about the colour of that gondola filled with cinder and ash.   Did I say “pink” in a recent post?  Besides gray, pink is the next colour name that comes to mind when I look at this car.  I find it inspiring.

Of note, this is a less extreme side-ways light photo.  The railheads and brake stand/step cast their shadows down, and to the left.   And the black of the locomotive is not reflecting light.  As a result, I think this is a more useful colour reference.
