7-Eleven Offers New 21 To Go Chicken at Select Branches
Leading convenience store 7-Eleven has widened our chicken choices as it brings the Taiwanese brand 21 To Go Chicken to the country, offering authentic chicken flavors that come in two variants — roasted and fried. If there’s a foolproof Filipino go-to for a quick, easy, and buck-saver meal, there is no doubt that the top choice is awarded to the OG Chicken and Rice Combo.
Convenience giant 7-Eleven is aware of this craze, and if there is anything that the brand knows like no other, it is to whip up an ordinary meal into a unique tummy filler for their customers. This time, its newest addition is a chicken meal with a tasty Taiwanese twist — 21 To Go Chicken. With the Philippines being a chicken-loving nation, Pinoys continue to witness and taste the transition from regular chicken to foreign-infused flavors such as Korean and Japanese. In partnership with the famous Taiwanese fast-food chain 21 Plus Chicken, Filipinos’ favorite convenience store unveils the authentic, tasty twosome treat of 21 To Go Chicken, either roasted or fried.
Starting at P79 for an ala carte order, the Taiwanese-style fried chicken promises a crispier and more flavorful twist for the taste buds. And if one is craving homey ulam feels, customers can also opt for the savory and seasoned roasted choice starting at only P135. For a bigger burst of flavors, get the best of both worlds at only P214 for the roasted and fried chicken combo. For only P95, 1pc fried chicken can also be paired with rice or rice and drinks starting at P120. Made accessible and affordable, these mouthwatering offers are perfect for those who are always out and about seeking fresh and flavorful grabs, students who miss the freshness and aroma of a homey concoction, or simply those who are on the lookout to spice up their regular plate of chicken.
The 21 To Go Chicken offering is not the ordinary quick-stop experience because 7-Eleven is also launching its first-ever 21 To Go Concept Store, revamping its existing Merville, Parañaque store. Here, diners can grab their orders, sit down, and enjoy a fast-casual restaurant layout. Launched on April 20, 2023, the brand welcomed this new addition along with Taiwanese representatives from 21 To Go Chicken and 7-Eleven Management for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, store blessing, promotions, and more.
Anchored to its brand identity of vitality, delicacy, and value, 21 To Go Chicken is known for serving ever-fresh, mouthwatering chicken meals in Taiwan for over 40 years. Looking for healthy fast food? This brand has been up and on top of its game with a menu that uses high-quality ingredients in its mix. With 7-Eleven being a generator of twists and flavors to Filipinos, together, both brands season up a healthier and savory combo meal available at a price that any craver can afford.
Get first dibs on some cluck time with 21 To Go Chicken today when you visit their physical store in Merville, Parañaque, or grab your chicken variant of choice in Bicutan, Taguig, Parañaque, and other select branches in the Metro. Like them on 7-Eleven Philippines Facebook, follow @711ph on Instagram, and @711philippines on Twitter for more information, the newest treats, and upcoming events.

Comeback era
Twelve days and we’d be back to “normal.”
I kind of miss home — that familiarity and the comforts of our worn out sofa. Jollibee fried chicken and spaghetti. My mother’s cooking.
But I would also miss the quaint beauty of this city. It’s wide streets and relatively clean buses. That 20-minute travel time from Ninang’s house to the city. Ahh, the simplicity that is O-bahn and the cute chug-chugs it makes while trudging past mini forests and suburban homes. Those nice walks where I still smell nice even if I completed half of my target 5000 steps for the day.
Coffee smell everywhere. They take coffee here seriously. Franchise coffee are top-tier but the more artisan ones are strong and requires a bit more time to get accustomed to. I’ve tried a lot and I’m happy to have discovered that their iced mocha has ice cream on top instead of the usual whipped cream we get for our fancy drinks. Another wonderful discovery is chai latte with soya milk. I love the spice and that milky, creamy taste. A perfect way to start your day or wake my sleepy self during siesta time at the uni.
There’s so much activity in the morning until early afternoon, 10AM coffee or tea breaks while lunch time is the busiest. Everything winds down by 3 or 4pm, and by 5, almost everyone’s boarding up. People leave by the dot, going overtime is not a norm. Evenings are spent at the comforts of your home or in selected pubs at the posher side of Rundle or rowdier Hindley. A few more are open at Hutt but usually late-night hang-outs are reserved during Thursdays and Fridays. Saturdays are chill while on Sundays, the CBD looks like a ghost town. Or so in my observation. I’m torn between the 5pm closing— I like it because it doesn’t pressure people to work til late but I also kind of miss it because I’m used to reading books or surfing the net in a random coffee shop, waiting til traffic dies down. But that’s Manila. Here, traffic congestion is not much of an issue. Hehe.
Food I would miss would probably be the breads, especially those fresh, soft croissants. Other than that, our Pinoy food still wins. But most probably, I would stay away from pancit bihon, spring rolls, and scrambled eggs for the time being. Ninang often cooks pancit and spring rolls, her go-to menu for handaan and church fellowships. Scrambled eggs because we’re served the lot everyday during breakfast at quarantine. I’ve had my fair share of eggs for now.
Yes, wonderful bookstores and public parks. The best thing combination I could ever hope to exist back home. The city has been planned with open spaces in mind. The CBD and the residential area are strategically placed beside the river while the whole district’s ensconced in traditional parklands. British colonisers took care of not altering the natural landscape, to be fair; and designed large swathes of green parks to allow this vibrant city to breathe. No wonder, it’s one of the topmost liveable cities in the world. Bikers would also be happy here. There are bike lanes everywhere plus alternative scooters for rent if you want to zip downtown. Everything’s walkable, the paved sidewalks and large canopies of trees for shade make the 15-20-minute walks a nice exercise.
Uni’s also a nice place to study and hang out. The study rooms are spacious and quiet. I hope we have those back at school for our students. We’re near Central Market so it’s easy to get food or just walk to get some headspace. In front of the uni’s a large park where people congregate during lunch time. Our professors and school officials are also wonderful. The library is wanting but I could always visit the State Library and that Hogwarts-esque Mortlock Wing if I want to see larger collections.
Before I leave, I’m listing down the remaining things to do to maximise our stay here. I already held a koala, fed kangaroos and wallabies, and came face to face with one of the world’s largest birds: the emu. So I think I’ve had enough of my animal encounter. Hahaha!
Yes to Fringe. Scheduled talks I would want to listen to during the Writers’ Week at the Memorial Garden. One Adelaide Festival play. Good chance to watch Kai Sotto in action, check. Can we still squeeze in a Popeye cruise across the Torrens? Hopefully. A brunch at one of the posh cafes here, Petter Rabbit most likely, for the ‘gram. Hahaha! A photowalk; head down to South Terrace because that’s the only side of the CBD we haven’t visited.
Twelve days na lang. Twelve days more. Let’s go!

Pancit, borrowed from the Chinese, then innovated and adopted into our cuisine, connects us to our Asian roots. But more importantly, it is a veritable Pinoy comfort food — easier to cook than rice, and more versatile and food combination-friendly. It is the faster fast food. In fact, “pancit” is derived from the Hokkien “pian i sit,” which means “something conveniently cooked fast.”
(Source: Aeron Lancero)
This is a dish that has large significance as it’s a dish that represents long life, long relationships, and long prosperity. This dish is PANCIT!!! And we have many versions of it.
Tumblr media
Pancit Batil Patung is a popular noodle dish in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. It is composed of two parts: the noodles with toppings, and the sauce which looks like an egg drop soup. Poached egg along with sautéed meats and vegetables are topped over the fresh miki noodles, while a piece of egg is cracked and stirred-in simmering beef stock and poured in a bowl. Both components should be present when eating this dish to experience optimal flavor. The sauce is gradually poured over the noodles and meat and it is further enhanced by adding a tablespoonful or two of the chopped onion and vinegar dip. The beef stock that makes the batil is traditionally prepared using carabeef.
Luckily, there's another new Panciteria in #Tuguegarao which opened this year on March that offers a different Pancit Batil Patung which is very trending in the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adding slices of lechon carajay on top will definitely seal the deal but today's top featured Panciteria has it all: overloaded toppings indeed.
Tumblr media
Add ons:
Chicken skin 20
Kalamares 20
Shanghai 8/pc
Saroni( crispy laman loob ng baboy) 20
Garlic Longganisa 20/pc
Fried siomai 5/pc
Chong's Panciteria is located along the street of RGT Bulaluhan, near the Barangay Hall of the place. The store is open from Monday to Sunday (9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). They offer the following:
70 "Golpe"
80 "Nagolpe"
100 "Naggogolpe Ngana" with Carahay Chicharon Bulaklak
*all are served with ground liver and vegetables*
Tumblr media
Here's a unique pro TIP: you have the option to order unique toppings: "Brain of Carabao"
It sounds so strange but it is a perfect match of their pancit, I swear. It is really a must-try.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The name of their Pancit is based on the word GOLPE which means over or murder. Basically, the root word has been used in different levels of comparison to indicate the variations of pancit to be ordered (regular, special, extra special). Truly, a food porn for pancit version because it is picture perfect.
They also serve the following street foods:
Tokneneng 12/pc kwek kwek 4/pc okoy 5/pc Kalamares 4/pc Shanghai 5/pc Lumpiang Gulay 4/pc siomai 5/pc.
Final Verdict/Rating:
5/5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 : Taste
5/5🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟🌟 : Appearance
4/5🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 :Location
Overall, I am really satisfied with my dining experience here @Chong's Panciteria. They've got the best Pancit #WhenInTuguegarao for me (as of now).
Again, this is a must-try panciteria in Tuguegarao Cagayan. You may locate them on Google Maps thru this link:

KRD UTRUN: GMA Affordabox
October 29, 1961, DZBB Channel 7 went on the airwaves for the first time, 11 years after DZBB-AM's establishment. Only two cameras and an impromptu studio were the beginnings of GMA Network's TV broadcasts (Channel 7 turns 60 next year).
In the 1970's, the Jimenez-Gozon-Duavit triumvirate led the turnover of its leadership due to restrictions during the Martial Law and relaunched RBS into GMA Radio-Television Arts with top-caliber programming and technical upgrades. By 1980's, GMA has phased out its 30-kw surplus antenna transmitter in its studio facility in EDSA and upgraded its transmitting capacity through the inauguration of the 100-Kilowatt "Tower of Power" facility in Tandang Sora avenue. And in the 1990's, GMA has able to reach the entire Southeast Asian region through the Rainbow satellite, marking the beginning of its international reach; and venturing on to other platforms by formally relaunching its corporate identity as GMA Network.
At the turn of the millenium, GMA has inaugurated its 17-storey GMA Network Center and brought in international audiences through the launch of GMA Pinoy TV.
As NTC shifts its analog to digital broadcasts three years from now, broadcasters like GMA are gearing up for the next level of its TV viewing. The NTC adopts Japan's ISDB-T standard including the EWBS alerts for emergencies like earthquakes and typhoons.
At present, UHF broadcasters have already migrated their transmission to DTV such as:
-Zoe Broadcasting Network (2017)
-Eagle Broadcasting Corp., Gateway UHF Broadcasting, and Rajah Broadcasting Network (2018)
-Southern Broadcasting Network (2019)
These were ahead of the 2023 moratorium on abandoning analog broadcasts and moving to the digital bandwidth.
GMA launched its DTV broadcasts in December of 2017 (prior to its test broadcast phase in 2013 which originally used the DVB-T system until the Philippines has adopted the ISDB-T standard years later) through Channel 27 and broadcasts GMA and GMA News TV (then under a blocktime agreement with ZBN for its Ch. 11 broadcast). In June 2019, GMA's digital broadcast moved from Ch. 27 to Ch. 15 (to comply with the SFN memo by the NTC for mandatory-airing of digital channels allocated by all O&O VHF Channels nationwide to operate from Channels 14-20 as common carriers for SFN frequency or 475-513Mhz) as the former reactivated its analog broadcast for GNTV.
GMA has invested millions of pesos to set-up its digital television broadcast services nationwide since it renewed its broadcast franchise 3 years ago.
A year later, GMA's digital signal updated its configuration and started test broadcasts for its digital channel Heart of Asia which began regular programming on June 29th.
By May 2020, GMA Network stood the test of time since the archrival ABS-CBN shutted down free-tv and terrestrial radio broadcast, losing 40+ TV stations and more than 20 radio stations and it even denied its broadcast franchise renewal application. Leaving GMA in the competition with 83 TV stations both on VHF & UHF and more than 20 radio stations on AM & FM, while in the succeeding months, TV5 is making great again and targeting the rival GMA to end the broadcast network's monopoly in terms of ratings game and advertisers. TV5 broadcasts on 7 originating and 7 affiliates across the nation, while NBC operates on Free-TV and on FM with 7 originating and two affiliated stations on UHF under Channel 41 Manila and 6 relay FM stations under the Radyo5 92.3 News FM brand.
Tumblr media
And so, the rest is history. June 26, 2020 (the date of EIC's 29th birthday), GMA, in time for its 70th founding anniversary, launched its newest digital blackbox product: GMA Affordabox. It gave a sneak preview on social media and it even made a test run through DTV Pilipinas. GMA Affordabox is a digital receiver which can receive local free-to-air digital channels in your area. Another features included are the nationwide EWBS and its auto-on alert feature for any unexpected calamities through its alarm sound that will activate promptly on your Affordabox in any GMA channels.
At present, all GMA channels are unencrypted and can be viewed on all digiboxes. UNBOXING AND TEST RUN
GMA Affordabox is now a best-seller in online stores so i don't want to miss this chance to buy this one. Shipping may be dependent on location and timeframe due to Community Quarantine and it may done earlier than expected. Thanks to J&T for providing a wide network of branches and distribution centers in order to deliver these items in a safe and secured manner. And so, the unit arrived on August 19, 2 weeks after i ordered on Shopee on August 4.
The package has an invoice! Wow, they did it on time and no more questions asked! This box has all items inside. Prior to Affordabox, i already purchased the HDMI Cable from Daiso worth P188 (you can own your HDMI Cable available in electronic supply and hardware stores depending on the class and quality). Now, on the test run of the unit, i plugged in the BRL Antenna, and HDMI source to the unit before cranking it up. On the first use of Affordabox, an installation guide appears on-screen prompting you to select your area before scanning channels (this is in order to receive EWBS alerts in your area in the event of an unexpected calamity).
The signal in Affordabox is very high because of its High Definition video quality (1080p) than the usual SD quality in the RCA cable (analog video signal or 480p). You may check the test run results of the scanned channels below:
GMA (479.143) 94/100 POSITIVE
CNN Philippines (503.143) 100/75 POSITIVE
ZBNI (509.143) 60/100 POSITIVE
LIGHT TV (587.143) 60/100 POSITIVE
MEDIASCAPE/TV5 (695.143) 88/100 POSITIVE
(The rest are NEGATIVE due to unstable signal reach in our neighborhood)
This PVR feature can record shows or segments like Eat Bulaga's Bawal Judgmental which is pre-taped after the live show (Thursdays-Saturdays) and recorded in advance during EB's timeslot for later viewing. The USB Media Player can play certain movies in a corrective frame rate since some movie files have an incorrect frame rate that can cause visuals and audio parts out of sync. It can also become an audio companion too since it plugs on an audio system (for music and recording purposes) that is sourced from the audio cables (RCA).
GMA Affordabox has its contact center for your concerns and technical support about the product. You may contact through:

You can never absolutely assumption what will appear at the Grammy Awards, but back Kacey Musgraves won for best country anthology Sunday night, that seemed adequately unsurprising. Although she was additionally nominated for anthology of the year, the best celebrated trophy, it was analytic that voters would accolade her in the genre-specific class — and again the big award-winning could go to a superstar such as Drake, or the alarmingly acclaimed Brandi Carlile, or alike the soundtrack to the billion-dollar-grossing “Black Panther” film.
And then, in the closing moments of the about four-hour ceremony, host Alicia Keys appear anthology of the year: “‘Golden Hour,’ Kacey Musgraves!” Musgraves — who won over Drake, Carlile, the Kendrick Lamar-curated “Black Panther” soundtrack, Post Malone, Cardi B, H.E.R. and Janelle Monáe — could not accept looked added shocked.
“Oh my God. Oh my God! I don’t alike apperceive what to say,” Musgraves said, and anon got afraid up. “It was astonishing to be alike in a class with such gigantic albums, absolutely ablaze works of art. It’s absolutely crazy. But I’m actual thankful. And I apperceive that acceptable this doesn’t accomplish my anthology any bigger than anybody else’s in that category, they’re all so good.”
Musgraves, 30, absolved abroad with four trophies overall, angry with Childish Gambino for the best of any artisan that night. She additionally won best country song (“Space Cowboy”) and country abandoned achievement (“Butterflies”). It’s the aboriginal time a country artisan has won anthology of the year back Taylor Swift did with “Fearless” in 2010. So how did Musgraves breach out of the country music balloon to abduction abundant boilerplate absorption for the Grammys’ better award?

[Ranking the Grammy Awards performances, from best to worst]
Since the Texas-born Musgraves appear her aboriginal distinct in 2012, she has stood out in Nashville. Back so abounding singers were all-embracing the pop and rock-leaning, party-centric songs that bartering radio programmers craved, Musgraves’s aboriginal accomplishment was authentic country: “Merry Go Round,” a breathtaking, acutely accounting track, was a austere attending at activity suffocated in a baby town. It’s still her highest-selling song to date and becoming abundant acclamation that bodies alfresco the brand took notice; she was nominated for best new artisan at the Grammys. In aboriginal 2013, Musgraves told USA Today that one affair she heard all the time was, “I don’t like country music, but I adulation you.”
A adaptation of that label, the “country accompanist for bodies who don’t like country music,” has ashore with Musgraves for years. Her admission album, the Grammy-winning “Same Trailer Altered Park,” was additionally a hit, and her third single, “Follow Your Arrow,” became an burning archetypal amid her steadily growing fan base. The references to marijuana use and same-sex kissing were awful abnormal for a country artist; Musgraves was additionally a articulate adherent of LGBT rights, which alone brought her added absorption alfresco Nashville.
However, “Follow Your Arrow” accepted too arguable for country radio — and although Musgraves seemed a bit balked by the snub, she appeared aloof in arena the archetypal industry games. All of Musgraves’s singles back “Merry Go Round” accept accustomed little attention, including from her additional Grammy-nominated album, “Pageant Material.” Yet it didn’t absolutely matter. She awash bags of albums and concert tickets and took her career to addition akin aftermost March with the absolution of “Golden Hour.” The abstracted anthology was a risk, sonically, as Musgraves formed with new producers and alloyed aggregate from pop to disco into country. As it angry out, critics admired it, and Nashville industry types additionally accepted her altered sound.
“I aloof started apperception this land, musically, area it was accessible to accumulate these elements of country music that are absolutely built-in to my music, like pedal steel, banjo,” she told reporters aftermost abatement at the Country Music Association, area she additionally won anthology of the year. “But I capital to analyze this new borderland for myself with affectionate of cyberbanking elements. And it’s a big admixture of a agglomeration of altered things.”
In addition analytical boilerplate boost, Musgraves’s music bent the absorption of Harry Styles, aforetime of One Direction. She opened for him in arenas beyond the United States aftermost year and apparent a new set of fans. It all led to this Sunday night, back she won the music industry’s better award-winning and put a spotlight on Nashville.

The Philippines is often overlooked by foreign travellers in favour of other Asian destinations, but there’s no better time to get to know this tropical archipelago.
With 7461* islands (at low tide!) and a feast of screensaver-perfect backdrops – from dreamy tropical beaches and smouldering volcanoes to mesmerising rice terraces and crumbling Spanish relics – the Philippines is one of south-east Asia’s most exotic getaways.
(*Yes, according to the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), following a report from the Philippine Islands Measurement Project, the number of islands recognized as Philippine property is actually larger than the 7,107 islands people were taught in school for decades. Some had just been missed due to a lack of technology, and others are relatively new islands that are the result of changing landforms.)
Yet to many travellers, this lush archipelago – anchored between the South China Sea and Pacific Ocean – remains an under-appreciated mystery; usually ignored in favour of its near-neighbours Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia (Bali), despite the efforts of Filipino tourism chiefs, whose slogan, “It’s More Fun in the Philippines”, and the new ad with world-famous travel blogger, Jack Ellis, “When you’re with Filipinos, you’re with family” graces billboards everywhere.
Palawan
So why take a punt on the Philippines? Aside from the fact that low-cost Filipino carrier Cebu Airlines has launched flights between the Philippines and other international destinations, taking on the national carrier Philippine Airlines, and the fact that you’re dealing with bargain, Bali-esque prices, what is there that appeals here?
How about gorgeous landscapes, a spellbinding cast of wildlife (both on land and under water), exuberant festivals, romantic hideaways and thrilling adventures, sumptuous seafood and rum-fuelled parties and the chance to mingle with some of the cheeriest people on earth.
And you’ll have no worries communicating with them. Alongside Tagalog (Filipino), English is the Philippines’ unofficial language (a legacy of the country’s strong American influence).
Compiling a maiden Filipino travel itinerary can be tricky (did I mention there were 7461 islands?).
So here are some ideas to get you started.
MANIC MANILA
Most travellers fly into Metro Manila, which, with its Bangkok-style traffic jams and its glaring chasms between the ostentatiously rich and the heart-wrenchingly poor, provides an in-your-face introduction to the Philippines. However, the Filipino capital is an absorbing and enthralling place to explore.
To familiarise yourself, join a walking tour with Carlos Celdran, an acclaimed guide who uses street theatre to trace Manila’s topsy-turvy history. His signature tour covers Intramuros – the photogenic, and fairly placid, old walled quarter founded by the Spanish colonialists in the early 16th century. (celdrantours.blogspot.com)
It was partially rebuilt after being flattened during World War II when the US and Japan fought for control of the city, then known as the pearl of the Orient. Another Celdran tour (Livin’ La Vida Imelda) explores the controversial life of Imelda Marcos, the shoe-loving wife of former President, Ferdinand Marcos. She was said to have owned 3000 pairs of shoes when she was the first lady.
Manila skyline at dusk
You can shop for nifty footwear, and other goodies, in the sleek airconditioned malls beloved by Manileños across the social spectrum (the fanciest are in Makati, a modern American-tinged enclave strewn with cosmopolitan hotels and restaurants). Don’t miss the sunset over Manila Bay; it’s the city’s traffic pollution that contributes to the startling orangey-red spectacle.
After dark, kick back with drinks on a trendy rooftop bar such as Skye (skye.ph) or try your luck at Manila’s new $1.3 billion Solaire casino (solaireresort.com). You could also partake in the national obsession: singing. Karaoke bars are everywhere; some are family-friendly, others not so, dripping in neon and sleaze, rife with sex tourists and ladies, and lady-boys, of the night.
THE BIG ISLAND – LUZON
Tumblr media
Classic Filipino Jeepney
Manila sprawls at the centre of the Philippines’ largest island.
A touch smaller than Cuba, Luzon could easily eat up the visa-free allowance that many passport holders are given upon entering the country.
After the smog, heat and bustle of Manila, it’s bliss to ascend into the cooler Cordillera, a pine-forested chain of mountains sheltering laid-back towns like Sagada, a faintly mystical, hippy hideaway, and Baguio, a hill station established by the American military, who forced Spain out of the Philippines in 1898.
Tumblr media
Baguio Botanical Gardens
The Cordillera hides waterfalls, sacred caves with entombed mummies and museums that depict the customs of ancient headhunters.
But the main pull is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed rice terraces skirting the small towns of Banaue and Batad.
Tumblr media
Banaue Rice Terraces
Dating back to the days before Christ, these magnificent amphitheatres — hewn with hand, mud and stone by the Ifugao people (one of several tribes still living in the region) — are edged by invigorating hiking trails. Travellers can do bamboo and nipa hut home-stays in Batad, where the worst of the noise pollution comes from crowing roosters and playful children.
A little sister gets a lift
Further north, the Philippines’ best-preserved Spanish town, Vigan, has cobblestone streets, Mediterranean mansions, sturdy Catholic churches that were built to withstand earthquakes; one form of disastrous natural phenomena that the Philippines is vulnerable to and vibrant festivals like January’s Vigan Town Fiesta – it’s a blaze of colour, music and processions.
Tumblr media
Horse-drawn carriage in Vigan
You can tour Vigan in a calesa, a two-wheeled horse carriage that is just one of the country’s eye-catching (and often hair-raising) modes of transport. Most prevalent is the jeepney. A Philippines classic, the ex-US Army jeeps-cum-minibuses daubed in technicolour graffiti spawning messages of love, politics and religion. Similar designs cover tricycles, the Filipino rickshaws that are basically motorbikes with bolted-on sidecars.
Tumblr media
Swimming with the Butanding
In South Luzon, you can swim with giant butanding (whale sharks) off the coast of Donsol, and see smoking Mount Mayon (a perfect cone volcano blooming from rice fields). Volcanoes loom either side of Manila. Day-trippers scale Mount Pinatubo, which last erupted in 1991, and Taal, which emerges, rather magically, out of a lake.
Left: Taal, Right: Mt. Pinatubo(top) Mt. Mayon(bottom)
BORACAY BLISS
Choosing the Philippines’ most beautiful beach is nigh-on impossible; there are so many. The most hyped is Boracay Island’s White Beach, a luscious, four-kilometre lick of powdery sand, edged by giant, lurching coconut palms and stroked by gentle azure waters crawling with paraws (traditional sailing boats).
Tumblr media
Boracay's white sand beaches
Though Boracay is paradise to many Filipinos (and Americans, South Koreans, Taiwanese and Chinese, who comprise the bulk of the international tourists), some complain that it’s become too developed.
Compared to Thailand’s Patong and Bali’s Kuta, however, Boracay is still pretty laidback. And as you enjoy a seafood platter — grilled squid, octopus, shrimps and snapper – with a chilled San Miguel beer, while watching the sun melt into the sea, sending the sky into a frenzy of pinks and oranges, White Beach doesn’t seem such a bad place to linger.
SEE CEBU
Less frenetic than Manila, Cebu is the Philippines’ second major gateway. Its international airport is on Mactan Island, where Iberian explorer Ferdinand Magellan met his end at the hands of tribal leader Lapu-Lapu in 1521.
Tumblr media
Magellan Shrine (back), Lapu-Lapu Shrine (front)
A 20-minute taxi ride away, Cebu City boasts the country’s oldest street and church, a ruined Spanish fort, and renowned eateries, like Zubuchon, where globetrotting celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain feasted on lechon (spit-roasted suckling pig). His verdict? “Best pig ever!”
Tumblr media
Pinoy lechon, roasting over hot coals
While not as famous as Thai or Vietnamese food, Filipino cuisine is extremely varied and flavoursome.
Touted as the national dish, adobo is a vinegary, garlicky dish that comes in beef, pork and chicken variations, with rice. It’s served everywhere, from upscale bistros to boisterous street markets where families and friends munch and socialise around plastic tables and chairs.
Tumblr media
Adobong Manok chaka kanin
Balut (half-developed duck embryo) is among the more offbeat culinary options. A favourite Filipino dessert is halo-halo, a revitalising concoction of milky crushed ice, fresh fruit (like mango, banana and papaya) and ice-cream.
Balut (left),  Halo-Halo (right)
I could go on and on about the delights of Filipino cuisine, but I think I’ll leave that for another time…
The hub of the Visayan archipelago, Cebu is the launchpad for ferries and catamarans to myriad tempting islands, best explored on a motorbike or bicycle. Gems include Siquijor which is famed for its witches and shamans and the bucolic Bohol, which is on the road to recovery after suffering back-to-back jolts in late 2013. A devastating 7.2 earthquake was followed three weeks later by Typhoon Haiyan (or Yolanda, as it was known in the Philippines).
Although some of Bohol’s centuries-old churches were reduced to rubble, its iconic, tubby Chocolate Hills are still largely intact.
Tumblr media
Chocolate Hills, Bohol
These 100-metre high mounds turn brown in the dry season between March and May (but are a luxuriant green for most of the year).
Another Bohol highlight is the tarsier. You can glimpse these cute, wide-eyed creatures — some of the planet’s tiniest primates — in the trees of Bohol’s Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary.

BEST OF THE REST
Like Borneo, Palawan conjures up a sense of the far-flung and unexplored. Its languid provincial capital, Puerto Princesa, is just an hour’s flight from Manila, but oozes Eden-esque qualities.
One of the few pockets of civilisation, El Nido is a traveller-friendly town surrounded by hulking limestone cliffs, pristine beaches and sparkling emerald lagoons. Hop in a bangka (an outrigger vessel) or kayak and imbibe scenery that resembles Phi Phi in Thailand, only with a fraction of the tourists. North of Palawan, the Calamian Islands are believed to have inspired Alex Garland to write The Beach.
Strolling along the beach in El Nido, Palawan
Calamian includes the hallowed wreck-dive spot of Coron, where more than a dozen Japanese ships were sunk during World War II. Coral-rich reefs teeming with tropical fish, turtles, sharks and dugongs, pepper Filipino waters, with world-class dive sites off Panglao Island, south of Bohol, Apo Island, off Negros, and Puerto Galera, Mindoro.
In the Philippines’ deep south, hardcore surfers tackle the “Cloud Nine” break off Siargao Island, while adventure-seekers are drawn to Camiguin, a pear-shaped island with seven volcanoes. Both are near Mindanao, the country’s second largest island.
Currently, Mindanao is out-of-bounds to tourists due to a proclamation of Martial Law by Philippine President Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte, initiated to counter the pro-ISIS Maute terrorist group, who recently took a hold in Marawi City. Troops are currently active in the region, although the rest of the country is as safe as ever.
