aghh i've been watching sousou no frieren and just AGH there's so many things it does so well. overall the premise of the story being "what happens AFTER the big Hero's Journey™️?" is something so interesting to explore and also it treats its characters so gently. like yes some aspects of their personalities are used for a bit of comic relief but it's never overwhelming, and it never feels overdone, or reducing a character down to their "funny" traits.

personally i love how stark is written. upon his introduction i was like "eughhhh great we're going to have one of those 'comic relief' scaredy-cat characters who's always whining and crying and useless" but that's so not what he's turned out to be!! like yes he's scared of fighting but it's not treated as a weakness. and he never becomes "whiny" or "annoying". a lot of the times his concerns feel very realistic and justified! his fears aren't belittled or feel "overdone" at all! it's so refreshing to so a character who IS scared who DOES have fears but it's not to make him "weak" or "comic relief" or anything. augh i just love stark so much. and for eisen, his master, to admit that he was always scared too, and not treat it as a weakness, AUGH i love that "fierce legendary warrior" eisen EMBRACED being scared and it was never treated as "unmanly" or what have you. I LOVE EISEN SO MUCH TOO.

and frieren. frieren!!! she's so. she used to be so apathetic but just 10 years of her >1000 yr lifespan was enough to change her, even if she doesn't really realise it yet. she wants to know people better. she wants to keep collecting spells. she thinks she never got to really know himmel before he died but she's always thinking of the things he said to her and the advice he gave. she literally carries his memory with her wherever she goes. she's so. i feel like she has this air of being uncaring that even she herself is convinced of but she cares so deeply. i love her. i love her so much.

and fern! she so perfectly balances frieren's and stark's personalities and she's such a sweetheart while being sarcastic and practical. it's also very refreshing to see a character who's a mix of cold and warm. i love fern.

AUGH i just. souosou no frieren treats its characters SO gently and conscientously its SO refreshing to see. augh.
