Carnivore (Justin Boote) "Detective Inspector Jim Morfield is worried. In the quiet, countryside village of Fritton, human remains have begun appearing. Bodies so viciously mutilated that only their bones are left behind, in some cases less than a few hours after they were reported missing. What creature could possibly devour human remains so quickly? Surely, as with the case of farmer Stanley Walters, it couldn’t be his cows nearby and covered in blood that dismembered and devoured him? Then, when another person is attacked by a horse, his arm nearly torn off, he has no choice but to consider the impossible. The problem is that there is another killer to contend with. One who has Fritton terrified. A serial killer hiding among the woods and fields, unseen, unchallenged. Now Jim has to decide if the bodies accumulating in the area are the works of a human or something as harmless as the local wildlife."
A Planet Named Shayol (Cordwainer Smith) "The protagonist, Mercer, who lives within the Empire, has been convicted of "a crime that has no name". He is condemned by the Empire to the planet Shayol, where he lives in a penal colony whose inhabitants must undergo grotesque physical mutations caused by tiny symbiotes called dromozoans. Most grow extra organs, which the Empire harvests for medical purposes. The bull-man B'dikkat administers the prisoners a drug called super-condamine that alleviates the pain of their punishment and various surgeries.
More than a century passes. Mercer has found a lover, named Lady Da. B'dikkat shows the couple a sight that horrifies him: children have been sent to Shayol -- alive, though with their brains removed. Lady Da knows how to contact the Lords of the Instrumentality so that they can intervene. When the Lords arrive on Shayol, they are shocked by what they find. Moreover, the children there are heirs to the throne. Apparently, the Imperium has become so bureaucratic and corrupt that it condemned them to prevent them from committing treason when they matured.
The Instrumentality voids permission to allow the Empire to exist and to maintain Shayol. They will free the prisoners who are still sentient and provide a cure for their suffering with a substitute for the super-condamine, namely an electronic "cap" which stimulates the brain's pleasure center. The mindless prisoners will be decapitated, their heads "taken away and killed as pleasantly as we can manage, probably by an overdosage of super-condamine", leaving the bodies to be used by the dromozoa."

Long-Necked ‘Entities’
Tumblr media
Even scientists admit it is unlikely that humankind is alone in an infinite universe and that somewhere out there, other intelligent beings are looking up into their night sky from different worlds and asking themselves the same questions we do.
In July 1997, two people were sitting in their car at the woods during the hours of darkness when they saw something very strange.
There, next to a tree were two people. But were they people?
Weird Norfolk: Long-necked ‘entities’ in Fritton Woods

We are Lucky to Live In A Place With So Much Natural Beauty
The Guardian newspaper recently published an article about my hometown, Lowestoft, and how stunning the town centre and our golden beaches are. As a resident of this beautiful town, I completely agree with their sentiment. We are lucky to live in such a stunning location, with no shortage of amazing natural surroundings.
One thing the Guardian missed, however, was the other side of town that is part of The Boards National Park. This area is steeped with marshes and nature reserves, which adds to the overall richness and diversity of Lowestoft's and its surrounding area natural environment. It’s a shame that this aspect wasn't included in the article because it also offers a unique perspective on the town's natural beauty.
The golden sandy, award winning, beach is just a 15-minute walk from my house, and the walk takes us through Gunton Meadow Nature Reserve, and then woods and the warren. It’s a delightful walk that showcases the stunning natural scenery that surrounds us. Alternatively, we can take a five-minute drive and take our kayaks and paddle boards out on The Broads. We also have Fritton Forest, Carlton Marshes and Lound Lake nature reserve all just a five-minute drive away, so we are truly spoilt for choice.
The Boards is a vast network of rivers and lakes that span across Norfolk and Suffolk counties. Full of luxury cruisers, sailing boats and so much more, all cruising up and down the broads looking for a slice of tranquillity. The broads is also perfect for kayaking and paddle boarding. There are many special spots to visit, historic water mills, quaint riverside pubs, or a simple jetty where we stop, have a picnic and the kids play in the water. Day or early evening in the summer months, is just perfect. The kids love it too, it’s an adventure every time we go out.
Living in a place where I feel spoilt for choice in terms of natural surroundings is a real privilege. The abundance of natural beauty allows residents and visitors alike to immerse themselves in the wonders of nature and enjoy a fulfilling and enriching lifestyle. It provides opportunities for exploration, relaxation, and a deeper connection with nature. I truly appreciate and take advantage of these surroundings, especially with my ill health as I use it as medicine to harness the therapeutic benefits that nature offers; nature truly has a way of providing comfort, peace, and rejuvenation.
Lowestoft is a town that is rich in natural beauty and history, and it’s amazing to see it getting the recognition it deserves. The Guardian's article highlights how amazing our town centre and beaches are, but it’s important to remember that there's more to this place than just that. It provides a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of life, giving us a place to relax and unwind in nature's beauty. It's a wonderful reminder that we live in a stunning location, with amazing natural surroundings that add to the overall richness and diversity of our environment.
Finally, Lowestoft is famous for being the most easterly town and the first place to see the sunrise in the UK. We also had the world-famous graffiti artist Banksy visit a couple of years ago and leave some murals. 1 was damaged, 2 were removed and sold, but we have one original Banksy mural left.

Also the cast of St. Trinian’s is really good. Colin Firth plays Geoffrey Thwaites the former love interest of the dean of St. Trinian’s Camilla Fritton who is played by Rupert Everett, who also plays Camilla’s brother who is the main character’s father, Stephen Fry is in there as a game show presenter, and Russell Brand plays a criminal that helps the girls out on their heist. During the first movie Colin and Rupert play that Geoffrey and Camilla still have feelings for each other and actually get back together.
Warning for dog, obviously fake, death cause Camilla’s dog has a running gag of humping the legs of Geoffrey who kicks it off and a plush dog goes flying and lands in a wood chipper.
Thank you for the trigger warning for anyone who cannot see dog deaths on screen.
Okay, will be watching the films soon! Thanks for the recommendation.

Grime's Graves - Wikipedia
flint mine
Grime's Graves is a large Neolithic flint mining complex in Norfolk, England. It lies 8 km (5.0 mi) north east from Brandon, Suffolk in the East of England. It was worked between c. 2600 and c. 2300 BC, although production may have continued well into the Bronze and Iron Ages (and later) owing to the low cost of flint compared with metals. Flint was much in demand for making polished stone axes in the Neolithic period. Much later, when flint had been replaced by metal tools, flint nodules were in demand for other uses, such as for building and as strikers for muskets.
The scheduled monument[1] extends over an area of some 37 ha (91 acres) and consists of at least 433 shafts dug into the natural chalk to reach seams of flint. The largest shafts are more than 14 m (46 ft) deep and 12 m (39 ft) in diameter at the surface. It has been calculated that more than 2,000 tonnes of chalk had to be removed from the larger shafts, taking 20 men around five months, before stone of sufficient quality was reached. An upper 'topstone' and middle 'wallstone' seam of flint was dug through on the way to the deeper third 'floorstone' seam which most interested the miners. The site is managed by English Heritage and can be visited.
The site is also a biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest[2] and a Geological Conservation Review site.[3] It is part of the Breckland Special Area of Conservation[4] and Special Protection Area.[5]
Mining method
Tumblr media
Plan of old shaft and galleries
In order to remove the chalk efficiently, the ancient miners built wooden platforms and ladders as they dug downwards and piled the spoil around the shaft opening using turf revetments to hold it in place for the season, when the shaft and all its galleries were thoroughly and fastidiously backfilled to promote stability. The landscape around Grime's Graves has a characteristic pockmarked appearance caused by the infilled shafts. This is probably what inspired the later Anglo-Saxon inhabitants of the area to name it after their god Grim (literally the masked, or hooded one, a euphemism for Woden). Although the pagan Anglo-Saxons seem to have had some idea of what the site was, as the name of the site means literally "the masked one's quarries" (or Grim's Graben), it was not until Canon William Greenwell excavated one of the shafts in 1868–1870 that their purpose was discovered in modern times. Other similar sites have been found in Europe like Cissbury in West Sussex, Krzemionki in Poland, and Spiennes in Belgium.
The miners used picks fashioned from the antler of red deer. They probably used wooden shovels, although this is only inferred by analogy with other flint mines with better conditions for the preservation of artefacts. Analysis of the antlers (Clutton-Brock 1984: 25) has shown that the miners were mainly right-handed and favoured the left antlers out of those that were naturally shed seasonally by the deer. The 28 pits excavated up to 2008 yielded an average of 142.5 antler picks each, of which an average of 14.8 have been found to be left-handed.
Once they had reached the floorstone flint, the miners dug lateral galleries outwards from the bottom, following the flint seam. The medium-depth shafts yielded as much as 60 tons of flint nodules, which were brought to the surface and roughly worked into shape on site. The blank tools were then possibly traded elsewhere for final polishing. It is estimated that 60 tons of flint could have produced as many as 10,000 of the polished stone axes, which were the mines' main product. Extrapolation across the site suggests that Grime's Graves may have produced around 16–18,000 tonnes of flint across the 433 shafts recorded to date. However, there are large areas of the site covered by later activity which are believed to conceal many more mineshafts.
There were other hard stones used for axe manufacture, those of the Langdale axe industry and Penmaenmawr in North Wales being traded across Europe, as well as other less well-known igneous and metamorphic rocks. The axes were much in demand for forest clearance and settlement, development of farmland for arable crops and raising animals, which characterises the Neolithic period.
Customs and beliefs
Tumblr media
Neolithic flint axe, about 31 cm (12 in) long
One unproductive shaft (pit 15) appears to have been turned into a shrine. An altar of flint lumps had been built with a chalk bowl at its base and antler picks piled around. In front of the altar had been placed a Venus figurine of chalk, a chalk phallus and some balls, also of chalk. It may have been an attempt to ensure that the mine remained productive or 'fertile' after this particular shaft turned out to have little flint in it. However, it is possible that the Venus figurine and the phallus are modern fakes – there is a lack of primary evidence surrounding their recovery in 1939, and rumours circulated at the time of the excavation that they were planted in order to deceive Leslie Armstrong, the archaeologist overseeing the dig.(Piggot 1986: 190, Longworth et al. 1991: 103–105).
Neolithic infrastructure
Tumblr media
The remains of mineshafts, pits, and spoil heaps pockmark the surface of Grime's Graves
Such a large industry may have required supporting infrastructure. Assuming no more than two shafts were open at any one time, around 120 red deer may have needed to be bred and managed nearby, in order to provide a steady supply of antler as well as skin, food and other products that the miners would require. Alternatively, the mines may have been worked intermittently by local farmers, as happened in many early metal mines during the Bronze Age and the later Iron Age.
Earlier flint mines in Britain such as Cissbury in Sussex were just as important as Grime's Graves, and there were many very local sources of flint which were exploited on the downlands. However, it is probably relevant that Grime's Graves were close to the very rich soils of the Fens, and forest clearance here would rely on local products.
There was also extensive farming settlement during the Bronze Age, known from middens that infill the mouths of many Neolithic mineshafts. Animal bones from these middens show that the Bronze Age people kept cattle, which they milked, sheep and a few pigs. They also grew barley, wheat and peas.
The site today
Grime's Graves is in the care of English Heritage. It is open to the public and it is possible to descend a 9 m (30 ft) ladder and explore one of the shafts. There is a small exhibition area.[6] This is the only shaft of its kind open to the public in Britain.

The full English Heritage reports on the excavations at Grime's Graves in 1971–72[7][8] are now available online through the Archaeology Data Service. Doctor Philip Harding FSA, later to appear in the TV programme Time Team, dug the site each summer from 1972 to 1976.

The Itinerant Printer | Modern. Tramp. Printer.
On the 26th January 2015, Chris Fritton aka ‘The Itinerant Printer’, set out on a coast-to-coast journey to redefine the idea of itinerant or “tramp” printers in modern times. Fascinated by the concept of ‘a union card’ back in 1852 where a member of the International Typographical Union (ITU) could travel anywhere in the states and pick up a printing job, Chris aimed to relive history. With only paper and ink, he hit the road, envisioning it would be a lot more like ‘a mid-level touring band’.
Poet, print practitioner, fine artist, and former Studio Director of the Western New York Book Arts Center Chris Fritton has over a decade of experience writing, printing, publishing his own books, and has collaborated directly with the likes of influential American artist Richard Tuttle, Pulitzer-winning poet Carl Dennis and renowned type designer Richard Kegler to name but a few.
Using his ‘Moveable Type’ caravan as his domicile and his transport to travel 50,000 miles across the rich North American landscape, Chris Fritton created prints at every shop he visited, working exclusively from ‘their idiosyncratic collections of wood type, metal type, border, ornament, cuts, and photopolymer plates’. From a studio cabin nestled amongst the live oaks covered with Spanish moss to a printing lodge situated in the wide expanse of western Texas, Chris has produced a total of 15,000 prints from 120 letterpress shops in the 38 US states and Canada. What’s more, he also visited schools and universities, private boutiques, non-profits, and historical preservationists to capture the culture and spirit of modern printers, educators, and art practitioners who have been working hard to keep letterpress alive through these rapidly changing times.
“That’s what the trip is about: printers. And printers are people. And people make places.” – Chris Fritton.
Chris originally planned that this whole trip would only take a year, but in the end, it had stretched into two long, trying years. Every letterpress shop has a unique tale and still, Chris Fritton is now on his mission to New England to recount the glories of this once obsolete technology. For most people, it must be hard to imagine what it feels like after two years travelling solo, but maybe for Chris, it must feel like coming home.
“It’s a place where I was constantly reminded of my humble size by the vastness of nature, the scope and scale of the human population, and the endless drives. It’s a place where the world affirms its turning, and lives went on and lives ended without me. It’s a place where I discovered how much and how little I need people, and how much and how little I want from them. It’s difficult to explain, but every single day I wanted the trip to end, and every day I wanted it to go on forever.”– Chris Fritton.
