It 19s estimated that about 400 million people are infected by hepatitis, worldwide. You can contract hepatitis through blood contact or sexual intercourse. A mother can pass it to her child. That 19s why hepatitis can affect people in places where there's little information about the impact on unsafe sexual practices or drug abuse. Left untreated, hepatitis can lead to dangerous and sometimes, fatal liver diseases.

We 19ve made huge strides

Here 19s the good news: over the last 100 years, there 19s been considerable progress in preventing and treating hepatitis. There are vaccines for both hepatitis A and B. At an early age, people in developing countries automatically get these vaccines from their doctors. Hepatitis C is easily treated and hepatitis D and E are rare.

But we still have a long way to go

Almost 90% of the people who have contracted hepatitis don 19t realize they 19re infected. The World Hepatitis Alliance has set a challenging goal to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. With your help, it 19s an achievable goal.

World Hepatitis Day is a public health holiday held each year to raise awareness about hepatitis, a group of infectious diseases that attack the liver and affect people all over the globe. The day also promotes testing and prevention for all five types of the disease: A, B, C, D and E. The World Hepatitis Alliance established this day in 2008 but did you know it was originally held on May 19? The date moved to July 28 in 2010 after the World Health Assembly decided to commemorate the birthday of Baruch Samuel Blumberg, an American physician who discovered hepatitis B in the Sixties, eventually winning a Nobel Prize for his work on the virus and its vaccine.

Not sure what to do for World Oceans Day? The Ocean Project's website will give you a bunch of ideas for celebrations. But if you'd rather someone else take the reigns, it will point you to some festivities in your vicinity. Also, you'll have the chance to pledge to the planet.

Clean up the beach

One of the best ways to celebrate our beautiful ocean is, of course, to go visit. However, keep sustainability top of mind. Getting your barbecue on? Go to the store to get supplies with a reusable tote bag instead of a plastic one. Throwing a party? Bring your own plates instead of throwing away plastic ones. After putting so much thought into conservation, it'd be a shame to throw it all away 14 by throwing it all away the beach. So clean up after your party and hopefully others will follow your example.

Take the 1CWe are blue, tell two 1D challenge

This might come as a shocker, but the color to wear on World Oceans Day is blue. Finding the right attire shouldn't be hard. However, you'll have to learn two facts about the ocean to tell others. It could be something you've learned here, or some knowledge from your fellow 1CWe are blue, tell two 1D challengers. Probably not the best idea to tell the same facts to the person who taught you, but repetition does drive the point home. Whatever you choose to, have fun and stay blue!

Why World Oceans Day is Important

Perspective

For many people, the beach spells fun in the sun. While taking a dip feels great, we sometimes don't think about what that water really means to us. It's essential to the biosphere and we want to make sure that future generations get to enjoy it. Chances are, the creatures that live there will also appreciate it (there are over 1 million of them!). And when you look out into the distance and see ships going to who knows where, it's a strong reminder that we're all connected.

Motivation

So much of our waste isn't biodegradable, and the ocean is left cleaning up our mess. Dumping recyclables into the proper bin is a good first step, but we have to carry that habit back home. Even if you don't live near the coast, let your friends and family know how recycling puts a big smile on the ocean's face.

Majesty

We never need an excuse to go to the beach, but we'll gladly take one. At times, we just have to pinch ourselves at how gorgeous the place can be; a sunset reflected on the water is like something out of a painting. Most importantly, the ocean gives us the perfect opportunity to empty our heads and relax. Some moments speak for themselves so we don't have to. It's not like the squawking seagulls would let us get a word in anyway.

The Ocean Project has coordinated the June 8 World Oceans Day for the past 17 years. It 19s a crucial environmental issue. We get both foods and medicines from the deep blue, and it helps to keep the climate in check. Oh, and there 19s this thing about water being the 1Clungs of the earth 1D 14 as it turns out, the majority of oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean. We always felt that the waves breathed some life into us. (Alright, once or twice it was the lifeguard, but that doesn 19t diminish the worth of one our most valuable resources.) However, if we don 19t take the steps to conserve it, we 19ll lose a lot more than a spot for a weekend getaway. So dive in and do your part to keep big blue going strong.

Turkey

A Little about Turkey

The Republic of Turkey is located mainly in Anatolia in Western Asian with a small portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. The size of the country is 783,562 sq km and ranked 44th in landmass. Population was reported to be 79.6 million in 2016. Approximately 80% of the population are Turks with 3 main groups including Anatolian Turks (most prominent), Rumelian Turks, and Central Asian Turks. The rest of the population consists of Kurds. There are significant populations of Greek and Roma located in Istanbul. There are numerous minority populations of Caucasian, Europeans, and Arabs.

Climate

Climate in Turkey is divided into three different climate zones. The Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea have warm, temperated mediterranean climate. Summers are dry and warm while winters are moderate and wet. Average temperature is over 22°C. Mountainous regions of Anatolia have snow climate and dry summers. The warmest month has a temperature over 22°C and the coldest month below -3°C. Central Anatolian plateau have cold, dry climate and dry summers and average temperature under 18°C.

Agriculture

Turkey is the major exporter of agricultural products to both the Middle East and other markets in the world. They are the world’s largest exporter of refined sunflower oil, raisins, and flour and third largest exporter of pasta. Turkey dominates world hazelnut trade and accounts for approximately 80% of global hazelnut exports.

Food in Turkey

Food preferences and preparations vary by region and ethnicity. For example, the Black Sea is noted for fish, especially anchovy, dishes, while the eastern region is noted for spicy foods. Circassians are famous for preparing chicken in a walnut sauce, while Georgian cuisine is typified by thick corn bread and corn soup. Lahmacun ,or Armenian pizza, originated in the southeastern provinces once occupied by Armenians.

Turkish cuisine includes different stews, vegetables, and meat (mostly lamb and beef). Borek is a pastry made of thin layers of dough that includes cheese, spinach, and/or ground meat. Kebab is commonly known as meat roasted or grilled in pieces or slices on a skewer. Dolma is generic name for dishes made of vegetables, mostly tomatoes and peppers, and leaves (grape, cabbage, or eggplant) that are stuffed with or wrapped around rice or pilaf. Turks are especially fond of eggplant.

Because Turkey is a mainly Muslim country, the major food taboo is pork. Although the Koran also forbids alcholic beverages, many Turks drink beer, wine, and liquors. Some segments of the Muslim population regard other foods as taboo event though their religion does not prohibit it. For example, Yürüks, a formerly nomadic Turkish people, avoid all seafood with the exception of fish. Members of the Alevi sect of Islam do not eat rabbit because it menstruates. Turks in the northwestern province of Balikesir avoid snails, claiming incorrectly that the Koran forbids their consumption.

Health Issues

Prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases

This causes 86% of all deaths in the country as well as pre-mature death (death before the age of 70). 1 in 5 adults die pre-maturely. Turkey’s action plan is based on recommendations and resolution from the WHO and United Nations.

Smoking and tobacco use

Notorious for heavy use of tobacco products which causes many deaths. Efforts have been made to reduce tobacco smoking in the country and there have been dramatic reductions in the past few years.

Regular vaccination of the migrant population to help eliminate measles

Campaign started in 2011 and continues today due to the immigrant population from Syria. All childhood vaccinations such as MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) and oral polio were provided.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do

Always use titles when addressing people in Turkey. For example Mr. or Mrs. followed by their first name or last name.

Turkish people are often not punctual. If there is an arranged time to meet, do be aware people may arrive late.

A large percentage of the Turkish population is Muslim. Because of this, most people observe Ramadan. Ramadan is a period of fasting that lasts about a month. During this time, Muslims do not eat or drink from dawn to dusk.

Don’t

Making the ‘okay’ sign by putting your thumb and pointer finger together is considered a rude gesture in Turkish culture.

Talking negatively about the Turkish Republic’s Found Father, Kemal Atatürk, is considered offensive and should not be done.

Cameras are considered an “evil eye” and taking pictures of people without permission can cause trouble. Many younger Turkish do not believe in superstitions like this, however, it is still a good idea to ask before taking.
