Parental Control for Multiple Platforms

When the lock down started, my kids' screen time spiked drastically. Started to use a parental control software such as Qustodio to limit the screen time on computer. But then there are other devices which you cannot installed with this software such as Android TV and Google Nest. Not to mentioned that my boy easily found a hack to bypass the screen time limit set in that parental software.

So, I explored several ways to control the screen times across various devices in multiple platforms. After multiple trial-and-error, I figured out the most efficient ways to manage this by using 1 hardware and 4 softwares!

That one hardware is a wireless router ASUS ROG RAPTURE GT-AX11000, which meant to manage screen times on TV and Google Nest. You can easily block the Internet access on those devices so that your kids can not browse YouTube on TV nor playing with Google Assistant of Google Nest. Or it can block YouTube permanently via its URL filter function. But then this blocking will be applicable for all devices includes parents’ mobiles and computers, which is not what we wanted.

Hence, we need the next tools, which are the other 4 softwares. The first two are Google Family Links (which mainly for Android phone / tablet and Chrome OS / Chromebook) and Microsoft Family Safety (which mainly for Windows based computer). Both supplies comprehensive parental control tools ranging from screen time management, website filtering, safe searching, application, and apps store control. For those to work effectively, please ensure that you only allow one web browser such as Google Chrome and blocked all other browsers (e.g. Microsoft Edge / Mozilla Firefox / Apple Safari / Opera)

While I don’t mind using two software to manage parental control of multiple devices, managing list of allows and blocked websites in web filtering become pain in the ass since I have to enter same list of websites for each devices which are pretty cumbersome. So when there are new website that need to be allowed / blocked, I need to enter this website to each devices and I have 5 different devices across multiple platforms.

With this issue, suddenly the QuStodio becoming a useful tool as QuStodio has a comprehensive web filtering features and support multiple platforms as well. So, you just need to keep one list of allowed / blocked websites and it will automatically apply to multiple devices. Do note that you should disable all the web filtering features provided by Google Family Links and Microsoft Family Safety so that QuStodio becomes your centralized web filtering control. Similarly, you should disable all other features of QuStodio except for the web filtering feature.

The final app in the list is TVUsage for Android TV. It allows you to manage the screen time as well as locking the selected apps with pin and controlling the apps installation. Basically, it’s a Google Family Links for Android TV.

Type “/” to go to search bar, you can find “More search tools” at the bottom. You can specify file type, owner, location, date modified, etc.

Search Syntax

Common search syntax: OR, AND, -, “phrase”

title: - search only the documents that include that specific keyword in their title

is:trashed - find files in trash folder

Search by Owner

find files owned by this user: type user’s email first(Google Drive can auto autocomplete the gmail name), then add “owner:” prefix.

Open settings(shortcut: t), click the View items taking up storage to find out what files are using most spaces.

Delete Files from Trash Folder

When we delete a file in Google Drive, it will be put into trash folder and thus still take your space.

When you are out of space, you can try to delete files from trash or empty trash folder. Be sure to know what you you are doing, as if we delete them from trash folder, they would be gone forever.

Check Whether a File Use Storage or Not

Google Drive may or may not use storage limit for files like videos: if we backup them with high quality option, it will not use storage.

To check whether a file uses storage or not, open the details vide by shortcut: ‘d’ or click More Actions at the top menu bar and choose View Details,

Backup Files using Backup and Sync App with High Quality

If you don’t mind the reduced quality, when backup, choose “High Quality” for Free unlimited storage for videos and photos.

This “High Quality” option only works for backup, NOT sync: it means videos, photos you synced using the App would still use original quality and thus use storage.

Files you upload to drive would still use original format, thus use storage limit. Don’t upload big video or images files directly using the web to drive, use the Backup and Sync App

To keep files with original quality, we can zip these files and store them into another Google drive account.

We can add the files in backup to other folders: go to Computers side bar in Drive, choose the file then click Add to My Drive in the context menu.

Transfer Files to Others

Files that shared with you would not count as against your quota. You can transfer these big files into another account.

We can only transfer ownership of Google files like Google Docs/Sheets/Slides etc.

To transfer videos to another account

Share the file with another account

Collaborator makes a copy of the file and share it with the original account

In the original account, delete the original file permanently and move the shared file into appropriate folder.

Sync folders using Backup and Sync App

We can specify what Folders in Google Drive would be synced to local laptop.

Organize Files/Folders

Raw Files in Root Folder

Be aware that files(like pdf, videos) including those created in future in the root(/) folder would be also synced into local laptop.

Google should improve this

Google should improve this: as usually we save files into root folder, then we move it to right folder. But Google Drive already synced files to local laptop then delete it locally. Kind of waste computation resource.

For example when we save to Google drive at the print dialog, we can’t set the destination folder. Though we can change the file name at the advanced settings.

Google Drive can fix this by simply create a default “GoogleDriveDownload” folders, all files are stored in this folders by default.

Put files into right folders

Be sure to rename the file to a better name and put it into right folder.

We may not be able to put files in the right folder when we are saving it to Google Drive for example during print. But be sure to go to Drive to rename and move it: the newly added files will be shown at Quick Access section or check the recent tab at right side.

Let’s make browser testing fun again

Introduction

Tonight at the monthly Oslo.pm meetup, I gave a talk about how to test your web application in a real browser. This blog entry is a collection of the steps I went through while running live demos showcasing my module Test::Mojo::Role::Selenium.

My module uses Selenium::Remote::Driver which is a library that communicates with desktop browsers, such as Google Chrome, Firefox or even Internet Explorer. It comes bundled with test modules, but I wanted an interface that looks and feels like Mojolicious's test module Test::Mojo, since that module really makes testing fun.

Even if the module is a Test::Mojo role, it is not restricted to the Mojolicious web framework. The module can test any web site, as long as you have a web server running.

Why do you want to use this module?

Testing the HTTP messages for headers and body is great, but as soon as you make something other than an API or very simple web page, you should also test the user experience of the web app. Testing the JavaScript for dynamic web pages is the first that comes to mind, but responsive web pages also need testing, to see how elements are laid out on different screen sizes.

Test::Mojo::Role::Selenium allows you to write and run user experience tests in the browser of your selection. The syntax is very simple and it has sane defaults to avoid boilerplate in each test.

Prerequisites

To get started, you need to install the module and some executables that act as a glue between your test script and the browser of your selection.

There are probably similar packages for your favorite operating system. The brew commands above are simply a cheat sheet for the presentation.

While preparing this article I wanted to get the demos running with Firefox, but I was not able to get the Selenium::Firefox module to work together with the geckodriver executable. Seems like the integration between firefox and geckodriver are under heavy development. Please let me know if I'm wrong. I did however manage to get Firefox running using the selenium-server. (I had to install Java though...)

You can change between the different backends using the MOJO_SELENIUM_DRIVER. environment variable. Note that Selenium::Chrome and Selenium::Firefox will start and stop the browser together with the test script, while Selenium::Remote::Driver (which uses selenium-server) require an external Selenium service to run.

Testing against a live web server

The first demo was to show that you can use the module to test any web site. The test mojolicious.t connects to mojolicious.org, checks for certain elements and fills in the search form, runs some JavaScript commands and then checks if the search result page was loaded.

Here are the commands I went through to run the demo:

The commands above should run the test script in various browser and result in a successful test run. Note that the environment variable TEST_SELENIUM need to be set, or the tests will be skipped. The reason for this is that I think in most cases the Selenium tests should not be run when installing a cpan module, nor being run on services such as Travis CI.

Testing against a local Mojolicious application

The next demo, internal.t, run tests agains a Mojolicious application. Using a Mojo app gives you some more features: In addition to test what is shown inside the browser, you can test headers and other "hidden" information that is exchanged over the HTTP protocol.

Since the test script does not set MOJO_SELENIUM_DRIVER, it will use the default browser which is the headless browser PhantomJS. This browser is quite fast to start up, but might miss some features that is only available in Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer.

The headless version also takes screenshots which are saved to the operating system's temp directory. This can be changed by specifying screenshot_directory.

A more complex real life example

The last demo was to look at some tests for the Convos chat web application. The web app is a Mojolicious server that allows you to be persistently conected to IRC servers and communicate with other IRC users through your web browser. The frontend is powered by Vuejs, which is a reactive JavaScript library that can only be tested through the web browser.

The test suite feature many browser tests, (Look for the tests starting with selenium-) but the two tests that was demoed was selenium-url.t and selenium-register.t.

selenium-url.t

selenium-url.t simply tests the URL library url.js which is a URL parser and generator.

It does that by calling $t->driver->execute_script(...) which is a Selenium::Remote::Driver method for running JavaScript code inside the browser. The result from the method is then tested with normal Test::More functions.

selenium-register.t

selenium-register.t is a bit more complicated test that uses more features from Test::Mojo::Role::Selenium.

It uses wait_for to wait for elements that are injected dynamically to the document. wait_for() is a simple version of the more complex wait_until method that runs a function until the function returns a true value or a timeout runs out.

I hope this introduction gave you an idea of what Test::Mojo::Role::Selenium can do, and makes testing fun again.
