Our favorite NYC skyscraper, the Woolworth Building has two younger siblings, the Broadway Chambers Building (1900), and 90 West Street (1907). Both buildings were designed by Woolworth Building architect Cass Gilbert, but Woolworth's gothic influence is truly seen in 90 West, which is clad head to toe in ornamental terra cotta. The New York Times described the building when it was first proposed, “It is to be twenty-three stories high and finished on the uppermost stories in beautiful colored terra cotta, harmonizing with the copper sheathed mansard roof. Its unobstructed frontage on the river will make it one of the landmarks to those who use the North River ferries.” Blocks away from the office buildings on Broadway, the West Street building was located on the banks of the Hudson directly across the street from the docks to serve the adjacent shipping and railway industries. Gilbert and structural engineer Gunvald Aus designed the building to be completely fireproof using state of the art methods including double layer terra cotta on the facade making it more than a foot thick. Steel columns and stairwells were encased in thick tiles and each floor was separated by foot-thick arched tiles to prevent the spread of fire with granite at the base as wide as six feet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the 1970s the building was saved from demolition, with the World Trade Center urban renewal border stopping across the street from the terra-cotta tower. In the shadow of the 110-story Twin Towers, the West Street Building was no longer on the banks of the Hudson; the newly created Battery Park City would add 92 acres of landfill to the west of the ornamental skyscraper. On 9/11 the building suffered severe damaged and burned for three days. Yet, the building's fireproofing saved it from complete devastation leaving much of the structure intact. Following 9/11 the skyscraper was restored, with the Boston Terra Cotta Company fabricating 7,853 new pieces of terra-cotta and over 100 replacement gargoyles and grotesques including seven contemporary faces – the building's owners, contractors, and project manager. 75 percent of the north facade's granite would be replaced. Location Aesthetics
⇢  Home (Queens, New York)
Tumblr media
Johnny lives in the Hunter’s Point neighborhood of Queens, NY. Hunter’s Point is the location most people mean when speaking about Long Island City. HP is one subway stop from Manhattan, which is where Johnny works as the District Attorney. Decades ago, HP was a working-class industrial neighborhood but has since transformed into a premier residential enclave. The neighborhood is defined by its view of the Manhattan skyline and is surrounded by the East River waterfront, which inspired the formation of the Shipyard Artists community in the '80s. When Johnny and Gabriel bought their home in 2010, they designed all the upgrades together. They gave it a sleek modern style, but maintained its industrial feel with the exposed brick and stone, Edison lighting, and bronzed pipes that they left untouched (remnants from the poor group of inner-city artists who used to live there). Hunter’s Point is host to a decent amount of New York history, industry, architecture, and especially art. It boasts the diversity of its residents and culture, as well as its ability to be both well-established and burgeoning.
⇢  Work (District Attorney's Office)
Tumblr media
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office is located at One Hogan Place, New York, NY. It has a long tradition of excellence and non-partisanship, and is considered one of the nation's preeminent prosecutor's offices. Until 1801, Manhattan did not have a D.A.; instead, criminal cases were prosecuted personally by the New York State Attorney General. The first elected Manhattan District Attorney was John McKeon (elected in 1847) and the first building constructed specifically for the office of the D.A. was built in 1929. It has seen several revamps since then, the latest one creating more private, personalized offices for many of the attorneys. However, one element that has never changed is the front of the building; it is etched with the English translation of the Latin motto of suum cuique (codified in the Justinian Corpus of Civil Law): "Justice is the firm and continuous desire to render to every man his due." Johnny became the incumbent District Attorney in 2014, replacing Cyrus Vance, Jr. as the Democratic nominee. He is now in his second term after winning the position again in 2018, and (for now) plans to run again in the year 2022.
⇢  La Belle Âme (Rockaway Beach)
Tumblr media
La Belle Âme is Johnny's boat, which is housed in the Ebb-Tide Marina at Rockaway Beach. While Johnny would rather have his boat closer to his home in Hunters Point (so he could enjoy it more often), he prefers Rockaway out of most other beaches in the area, so it just made the most sense to park her there. The boat was named La Belle Âme (English translation: The Beautiful Soul) mainly because of Johnny's proficiency with the French language, but also due to the fact that she was named The Beautiful Soul in English by her first owner. La Belle Âme is a 50-foot Bluride 995 yacht that was built in 2013. After a lifetime of loving the water and spending much of his free time either on it or in it, Johnny finally pulled the trigger and bought the vessel in 2016. Since then, he's taken trips along the northeast Atlantic, but typically only uses it for recreation during the late spring and summer. While the purchase might have initially caused a bit of additional strain in his already-troubled marriage, Johnny doesn't regret it and believes Gabriel has come to love the boat, too.
⇢  NY County Courthouse (Manhattan)
Tumblr media
As the District Attorney of Manhattan, Johnny spends much of his time in the New York County Courthouse trying cases. The building is also known as the New York State Supreme Court Building because it houses the Civil and Appellate terms of the NY Supreme Court. As such, its construction was held in higher regard than many county courthouses and the selection of the architect was done by a design competition. The granite-faced hexagonal building ("a temple of justice") was created by Guy Lowell in a classical Roman style between 1913 and 1927, completion having been delayed by World War I. Both the interior and exterior are considered New York City Landmarks. The building's mass and scale give it the appearance of a temple, especially with the colossal statues of Law, Truth, Equity, Justice, and Authority (Martiny, 1906). A frieze bears the inscription, "The true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good government" (George Washington). Inside, the large rotunda contains ten stained-glass windows with the circular Law Through the Ages mural (Pusterla, 1934-1936; sponsored by the Federal Art Project). There are also illustrious murals of law in several of the courthouse's rooms (Pusterla, 1936). The building was restored in the 1990s using privately-funded money from NYC judges and attorneys, done to preserve the courthouse's historic art.

Belvedere Castle Central Park NYC New York City USA
#BelvedereCastle #CentralParkNYC #USA
Belvedere Castle is a folly in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City. It contains exhibit rooms and an observation deck, and since 1919, has housed Central Park’s official weather station.
Belvedere Castle was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1867–1869. An architectural hybrid of Gothic and Romanesque styles, Vaux's design called for a Manhattan schist and granite structure with a corner tower with conical cap, with the existing lookout over parapet walls between them. Its name comes from belvedere, which means "beautiful view" in Italian.
Belvedere Castle was built as a shell with doors and windows open to the weather.  Originally, the main tower had a more medieval design, with a weather antenna on top, but during the castle's 1983 renovation, the tower was restored in a German style with a flag, a weather vane, and an anemometer on top. The two fanciful half-timbered wooden pavilions deteriorated without painting and upkeep and were removed before 1900, but restored in the 1980s.
Starting in 1919, Belvedere Castle housed the New York Meteorological Observatory, which had been taken over by the United States Weather Bureau. The current weather station in Central Park, an Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), is located immediately south of the castle, though wind equipment is still located on the main tower.
A castle is a type of fortified structure built during the Middle Ages predominantly by the nobility or royalty and by military orders. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble.

Arch House, Brooklyn

Arch House in Brooklyn, New York
Oct 20, 2020
Arch House in Brooklyn
Design Architects: Barker Associates Architecture Office
Location: Brooklyn, New York, United States, USA
The Arch House project is a triplex for a young couple who travel extensively for business and wanted the feeling of a quiet sanctuary for their new home.
They partnered with BDDW to provide furnishings throughout the house. The existing building is a relatively compact Anglo-Italianate townhouse circa 1860, and a three-story extension was added to expand the living space.
The house’s signature arched doorway and front window were the inspiration for much of the detailing for the renovated spaces. Arched openings connect the dining space to the foyer as well as to the kitchen through a butler’s pantry.
The generous kitchen spans the entire width of the house and is designed for socializing while cooking, with a large central marble island and extensive countertop space. The ceilings were raised on the parlor floor to visually and spatially open out the space toward the rear yard, which is framed by a full wall of steel doors and accessed from a rear deck. The centerpiece of the living room is a plaster fluted fireplace surround.
The existing wood stair and handrail were restored and the skylight above was replaced in the shape of an oval to match the geometry of the stairwell. The master suite occupies the second floor. A library and office with original moldings and fireplace overlook the street. The bedroom, a plaster, and marble master bath are sequestered through more arched openings via a raised passageway toward the rear. The bedroom opens onto a balcony through more steel doors. The third floor is configured as a level for children, guests, and caregivers.

Have you read our post on the Art Deco skyscraper 20 Exchange, one of the most amazing skyscrapers in NYC? Check it out now on our website (link in bio) In 1929, the City Bank Farmers Trust Company chose renowned architects Cross & Cross to design a new skyscraper that would solidify the banking institution's presence on Wall Street. The new building became one of NYC's most iconic skyscrapers, known for its ornate design and towering height. That year Cross & Cross unveiled a proposal for the tallest building in the world: a 71-story, 846-foot tower topped with an illuminated globe supported by four massive eagles. However, following the New York Stock Market, the bank was forced to reduce the height to 741'. Once construction began the skyscraper rose at a record pace and was completed in February 1931, less than a year later. One unique aspect of the design was the architect's insistence on high-end materials. The facade is clad in fine stones including granite and limestone. Inside, they used forty-five varieties of marble to adorn the spaces. The exorbitant base features an array of sculptures, reliefs, seals, plaques, and medallions both inside and out. Eleven granite coins surrounding the arched entrance depict cities where the bank had branches. On the nineteenth floor at the first major setback, 14 massive heads known as "The Giants of Finance" look down on the street below. When it opened in 1931, the skyscraper housed the largest pneumatic tube system in the world, the largest telephone exchange, and reservoirs in the basement that pumped hand soap to all the bathrooms. The building has two separate grand banking halls, both of which are vacant today, largely used for movie shoots including Inside Man and the original Wall Street. In 1955 the bank relocated its headquarters to Midtown and in 1976 the First National City Bank of New York was officially renamed Citibank. In the late nineties, the building was landmarked, completely restored and converted into residential units. Today, the building houses 767 units with amazing views of the city and amenities including an outdoor terrace overlooking the Giants of Finance. @twenty.exchange (at 20 Exchange Place) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByODUzUHP0B/?igshid=ekj17i8ovwbn

Give Thanks for Our Most Popular Home—This Former Indiana Church Is Glorious!
realtor.com
Hallelujah! A church-turned-luxury residence is the most popular home on realtor.com® this week. Built in 1914, this Indiana building was known as St. John Lutheran Church in its previous life. The current owners saw the light and bought the place from church elders in 2010, then turned it into their dream home.
The couple kept the building’s best features, including the actual cathedral-height ceilings, stained-glass windows, and the tower with bell that still rings. This heavenly abode is passing the plate in search of a buyer with $865,000.
This week’s runner-up is a familiar face. Back on the market in Beverly Hills, CA, is Opus, the spec home built in 2017 that originally landed on the market for a whopping $100 million. We covered it last fall when the price was trimmed to $85 million. It was relisted this week for an almost modest $77.5 million—and it became a click magnet! With deluxe amenities and entertainment features, including two pools, a fitness center, and a 170-bottle Cristal vault, the property might find the third time to be the charm.
Other popular places this week include an adorable abode outside of Boston dating to 1816, an amazing 94th-floor penthouse in NYC, and a sweet shotgun cottage in New Orleans.

The altar has been altered to fit a flat-screen TV with pew seating. There’s an art studio in the former choir loft and a bell that still rings in the tower.
“It’s a very beautiful property. People are drawn to it because it’s unique,” says listing agent Hilary Pender. Amen to that.

Agilenano - News: An Epic Brownstone Remodel Hits the Reset Button
A couples own pied--terre in their townhouse is finally complete
Over a couple of years, Janet and Jerry, a couple from Long Island who bought a historic Crown Heights, Brooklyn brownstone, embarked on a bottom-to-top renovation. After remodeling two of the floors as rentals with Sweeten, (See blog posts for thethird floor and garden level) we get the details on the final apartment,a project high point indeed as it marks the completion of the townhouses top floor and the pairs own NYC pied--terre.
The backstory: The duo knew when they closed on the circa 1910 building, a bring your architect purchase in need of a total gutting, that a big job lay ahead. Janet, president of the New York School of Design, and Jerry, a doctor, posted the project on Sweeten, a renovation platform connecting homeowners to vetted general contractors, and hired a Sweeten architect and a Sweeten contractor. Read how a neglected and cramped one-bedroom gives way to a space with a loft-like feeling.
After photos byPixy Interiors for Sweeten
Blog post by homeowner Jerry as told to Sweeten
This is it. Our apartment. The pied--terre weve long waited to move into. We have a primary residence on Long Island, but we work in NYC and spend about half our time here. We decided to invest in a multi-family townhouse in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, rent the main units and keep the smaller, fourth-floor apartment for ourselves.
From the time we first saw the top-floor space, we knew it would be our nest. Like the other apartments, this one-bedroom unit needed work. It was dark and chopped up, the kitchen was a wreck and the bathroom was in disrepair. We started thinking about how to refresh the under 600-square-foot space and make it feel larger. Our goal was to create an open and airy studio. We planned to maximize natural light and use natural materials for an organic feel.
In our projects earlier phases, wed worked to preserve the buildings architectural features. But in this unit, previous renovations had removed most original detail. Hardwood floors had been replaced with linoleum. Moldings that might have graced the overhead plaster were forgone for a drop ceiling. Only the window moldings and the fireplace remained. Given this situation, we felt free to rethink the space. We decided to use modern elements, bringing in Scandinavian style and Californian mid-century modernism as influences to the new interior.
These subtle architectural elements bring the space together while simultaneously differentiating the sleeping and living rooms.
Our Sweeten architects worked closely with Janet to achieve several architectural changes. First, we moved the entrance from the fourth floor down to the third, making the stairway part of the apartments interior. This increased privacy and usable space, and also allowed us to increase the living rooms natural light with a skylight at the top of the stairs.
Next, we exposed the living-room ceiling. Opening it to the original wooden beams provided for more vertical space and a lofty room.Initially, we were going to paint the wooden ceiling and exposed beams white. Our Sweeten contractor suggested the beams looked really good unpainted and unfinished. The adjacent sleeping area, however, would have a new lowered ceiling, and an archway. Together these subtle architectural elements bring the space together while simultaneously differentiating the sleeping and living rooms.
A key facet of our design concept, the arch plays nicely with horizontal lines throughout the apartment, including the exposed beams and the long kitchen countertop. It also connects with a number of graceful curves, like the rounded mirror over the restored fireplace and the rounded lighting fixtures.
With the ceiling beautified, we moved to the problematic floors, which were covered in vinyl and old carpeting. We wanted natural wood and after much searching, we chose white-oak flooring and planned to lay it in a custom herringbone, or chevron, pattern. Unfortunately, there was a long lead time for the wood to be custom cut (nearly two months, as the supplier told us that it would require shipping the planks to Europe), not to mention a high price. Just before going back to the drawing board, we found a pre-cut herringbone at half the price. It came out fantastic.
Once the floors were down we were ready to build the kitchen. We wanted dark wood cabinets, and while we were planning, Ikea came out with a new style that not only looked great but pleased our budget! We wanted countertops that would compliment the cabinets and wear well, and considered marble, granite, and a few synthetic materials, but ultimately chose soapstone for its durability and appearance. The veined black goes nicely with the apartments other dark features and looks fantastic as a backsplash. To stay minimal, we hid appliances in cabinets; our washer/dryer combo, fridge, and pull-out freezer all fit under the counter.
The pendant lights over the kitchen counter, the chandelier above the old fireplace, and the bedroom fixtures are simultaneously industrial, modern, casual, and polished.
In the bathroom, we managed another stunning redesign thanks to our Sweeten architects. The shower, a vertical space with a skylight, is flooded by day with natural sunlight, making it feel almost like its outside. One disappointment that turned out fine was with the stone floor tiles. We spent a lot of time picking them out, but after accepting our order, the supplier said that only one box of tile was available. Our contractor solved the issue by taking a large slab of the same stone and custom cutting it into a single 3x3 shower base as well as a door saddle, and a stone shelf. We chose an in-wall toilet to maximize space.
Having knocked down walls and invited light in every way imaginable, we felt successful in our visual opening of the space. We went even further by creating an outdoor area. The roof had formerly been inaccessible but we replaced a window with a glass door; it leads to a new roof deck with views of the neighborhood and Manhattan in the distance.
Through it all, we felt lucky to work with Sweeten, which connected us with both our architect and contractor and helped us troubleshoot on many occasions. The process came with so many rewards. While Janet says she most appreciated the design work and creative discussions, Im just enjoying our apartment! Its like staying in a nice hotel with a feeling of being home. The best of both worlds.
Thank you, Jerry and Janet, for sharing your entire home with us!

Belvedere Castle Central Park NYC New York City USA #BelvedereCastle #CentralParkNYC #USA Belvedere Castle is a folly in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City. If you’ve ever wanted to live like an NFL star, now’s your chance!
Former New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath’s Upper West Side apartment is up for sale in New York City. The two-bedroom unit is nestled in a beaux-art pre-war building built in 1910 and is currently on the market for $1,195,000, according to its Compass listing.
Namath originally bought the apartment with his daughter Jessica and her then-husband Brian Kennedy, according to the New York Post. The outlet reported that the trio originally purchased the home for $1.01 million in 2016.
The space’s oversized windows and 9-foot high ceilings promise plenty of light inside and a deck with stairs leading to another area promises plenty of opportunity for time spent outdoors as well.

Other features of the home include a living room area, dining room, two downstairs bonus rooms and a renovated kitchen that boasts “abundant custom cabinetry, large granite counter space, and stainless steel appliances,” according to the listing.
The “cheerful” and fully restored bathroom features a clawfoot bathtub that looks perfect for relaxation, or for ice baths after an intense game of football.

Plus, anyone who has experienced apartment living will appreciate the unit’s full-size stainless steel LG washer and dryer.
As for the neighborhood, residents of the building will be close to public transportation hubs, restaurants and the Lincoln Center, not to mention dozens of nearby schools in the PS 199 district.
